warp9 commented on the diary post What Can Labor Win if It Backs Obama’s Re-Election? by Amy B. Dean .
By supporting Obama despite all the betrayals, Labor would help make itself irrelevant.
On the other hand, by showing that they can cause a president who betrays them to lose an election, they gain power.
It’s like the quote from the movie Dune: “He who can destroy a thing controls a thing.”

warp9 commented on the diary post The Religious Right’s Assault on Palliative Care by BarbaraCoombsLee.
Clearly the Religious Right demands that doctors do everything they can to keep the patient alive, regardless of what the patient wants. Unless of course, the patient can’t afford to pay the medical bills—it that case, they want the patient to be thrown out on the street.

warp9 commented on the diary post Why vote for Obama? Let me count the whys – 3 by David Seaton.
As an added note, when I first read the title:
Why vote for Obama? Let me count the whys – 3
I read that as a “negative 3″ (as in 3 reasons not to vote for President Zero) that would make a lot more sense in my book. ;-) Although it would probably be more like [...]

warp9 commented on the diary post Why vote for Obama? Let me count the whys – 3 by David Seaton.
Under no circumstance will I be voting for Obama or Romney. I can’t change the GOP. But I expect the democrats to be an acceptable alternative. Unfortunately, under the current democratic leadership, they are NOT acceptable. I don’t demand perfection, but I demand that a candidate be at least somewhat good. Obama is not even [...]

warp9 commented on the blog post Romney and Obama Seen With Different Economic Strengths
Obama has forced the GOP to be ever more conservative by co-opting Reaganism and the end of FDR’s New Deal egalitarianism as Democratic Party virtues.
Agreed 100%
The old version of the republican position has been taken by the democrats, so the current republicans have no place to go, except off into loony land.

warp9 commented on the blog post FDL Book Salon Welcomes Paul Krugman, End This Depression Now!
Obama was very much a conventional, centrist guy.
But, given how far things have shifted to the Right, wouldn’t being a real centrist actually put somebody pretty far to the Left these days?
It seems to me that this point relates to something you’ve said above (in post #55), about people who are taking the “middle position” on the economic debate, even though the austerity side of the argument is being driven by charlatans and cranks. Being a “centrist” when one side has gone off the rails into crazy land, is not a defensible position.

Paul, thanks for being here, this should be an interesting discussion.

warp9 commented on the blog post Weak April Job Numbers Should Concern Obama Campaign
Several factors are involved but one of the key ones is the ever increasing population. In 1950 there were about 2.5 billion people. In 2012 its nearly 7 billion. and will just keep rising. The is no way business will ever keep up.
I agree that increasing population is a BIG problem. Although I’m not sure that one of the issues is that “business will not be able to keep up,” more people means more businessmen, so I do think business will be able to expand along with the number of people.
The real problem is that the environment will not be able to cope with the massive human population. And everything, even business, ultimately depends on the natural environment.

Yep, sounds like the lyrics to the music for the O-bot dance. ;-)

warp9 commented on the blog post Holder Admits Obama Misled Rolling Stone About Marijuana Law
Obama’s lying shows the contempt he has for the entire body politic of America. He’s basically saying “Congress is making me do it”, which is insulting to anyone who knows a little about how government works.
True enough, but that is always a big seller for the O-bots. They use the “Congress made Obama do it” all the time. So maybe it just shows Obama’s contempt for the O-bots.

warp9 commented on the blog post What Inevitability Looks Like
Expect the 2016 field to feature Frothy as its most leftward contender. Stormfront, actual Nazis, anti-Semites, and KKK leadership will make up the field while Frothy pleads for ‘tolerance.’
And that is just looking at the democrats. ;-)
Of course, no matter how far to the Right the major parties go, we’ll no doubt be told to shut up and support the lesser evil.

Also, surprisingly serious and substantial for something posted by somebody called “jest,” on April-Fools-Day. ;-)
I’m going 3rd party too.

Have you considered the effect on the poor?
I feel sympathy for the poor.
However, the needs of the planet (which can be damaged not just for tomorrow, but for vast spans of time into the future) have to come before the needs of today’s poor.

warp9 commented on the diary post Oil and Obama. We are all being played for fools as the robbery at the gas pumps continues. by Alan Maki.
First off, I agree that Obama totally sucks—we need to dump him in November (Vote 3rd Party!). However, I think that the high gas prices are a very good thing. In fact, gas prices should be even higher! I think we all agree that people should limit their use oil as much as possible (start [...]

That is a fair point. And I’m not saying that we shouldn’t pull together, I just don’t want to pretend that the problems are smaller than they are. Also regarding your point from post #65 about Jared Diamond, I have heard other people say critical things about him. Usually people try to claim that he [...]
