The US military has already stated that this bombing campaign will have little effect on the outcome of this war. It may give the Kurds and Iraqi Army a short-lived morale boost but it just shows that they are helpless without outside support. The Cult Of The Bomber is diseased thinking so I don’t support [...]

It’s strange to watch a Liberal Dove morph into a Crusader Hawk right before our eyes. Our bloody warmaking helped create this problem so now more bloody war will solve it or will it create more and intensified problems? It seems that some people are unable to learn or accept that US interference rarely produces [...]

  • The Peace and Love Pope has shown his true Crusader spirit openly for all the world to see. I wonder who will be his next target for Divine Destructon, the Chinese treat their Xtians poorly.

  • I think there were two messages delivered by this and other executions by cop and the following violent repression of demonstrations. The first is that summary executions are not just tolerated but necessary to instill fear and let everyone know who has the power in Amerika. The second, which is aimed at all subjects of our Regime, is that anyone who confronts this unlimited power will be crushed especially if they are nonviolent.

Much of what the Pigs do these days seems designed to incite a violent reaction so they can fill some body-bags and illustrate clearly to everyonw who is in control and who has the power.

I don’t think you can compare this incident to the Boston lock-down, there was a real threat of bombers with weapons involved there but the larger threat to Boston citizens was from the enraged bloodthirsty local cops.

It gets worse, Wendy the police have been ignoring the looters and attacking journalists and uninvolved citizens, this is telling and now I read that Martial Law is being inforced. Local citizens are stopping the looters while the Storm Troopers prepare for battle. I imagine that the Northern Command will be involved soon if not [...]

This kind of tisk tisking from Middle Amerika, law and order for Them, Liberal reactionaries just highlights the contempt shown by some for the oppressed. Let Them loot and next they will rape just like those Them causing trouble in the ME. A human being was murdered but broken glass and property is the paramount [...]

Most of the ME commenters I read hold no illusions about who makes policy and decides who governs what is left of Iraq, it’s Iran.

What is interesting to me is the contempt that Iran shows Iraq as is evident by their choices of leaders for them. Their first choice, Maliki and champion until last week is known as The Underwear Salesman and this new tool al-Abadi was an elevator engineer. Contrast them with the choice of the Islamic State of a scholar, cleric and poet as their leader.

TB, you make some good points but Iran decides who is PM in Iraq and this elevator maintanence man from London, al Abadi was placed in power by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Day to day decisions in the rump state of Iraq are now directed by Adm Ali Shamkhani an Arab Iranian who’s main focus is protecting Iran’s exposed border.

The Daily Star of Lebanon has some useful information but seems to me to be infected with wishful thinking about the Islamic State and their or anyone’s ability to resist it. The Saudis just dumped a billion dollars on the Lebanese Military to try and slow the coming conquest so a few greedy tribes in Anbar are unlikely to be decisive.

You are neglecting to recall that the US had plans in the works for Ukraine long before the Syrian War began. I’m sure that Putin’s deft defusing of the Syria crisis caused many bruised egos in Washington and that hurt is reflected in the present rhetoric but the timing of the coup in Kiev was [...]

I think you need to go back to when Russia “invaded” Crimea and then quickly annexed it. This was the provocation that could have started a real “War” but the response from the US and Europe was foot shuffling and sternely worded dispatches and no real action. This lack of a real response was a [...]

Another great update, Wendy but the hyperbole about “War” with Russia is dated and a bit overblown just as it was in the Syrian crisis. It makes great eye catching headlines and there is an undeniable economic, political and propaganda conflict underway with a small proxy-war in E Ukraine, there is little reason for a [...]

You have to be civil on the Salon but pointed questions such as the one you list might produce an interesting response.

This is the second time that the Salon has hosted one of these Deep State type operatives and I hope the commenters are better prepared with probing questions this time.

It appears the Technocrats at the State Department are worried that the Rubes might be getting restless again and might actually do something to upset the status quo. Their minions have been dispatched to convince the unwashed masses that real resistance is futile and only properly channeled activism will be allowed. Never mind that this [...]

  • I think or hope BT’s comment was snark but it does highlight how the Ugly Amerikan is returning to the the stage. Some of the editorials and comments about the Palestinians are sick and they are our pet, somewhat tamed Arab victims.

Some of the most outspoken Liberal opponents of Bush’s war in Iraq are ready to rain down Hellfire on the Islamic State so when the Palestinians join the Caliphate all hell will break loose.

No one has shown any actual evidence that they are not independent. The only thing I have seen has been poorly executed Iranian propaganda and unverified rumors. I am also sure that they have taken support from various sources, especially in their early years, and individuals but that doesn’t mean they are controlled by anyone.

I understand the tendency for Westerners to pigeonhole the IS because the reality may be too frightening to face.

The oil fields they control in Syria and Iraq, the hundreds of millions in gold and cash they liberated in Mosul and their developing tax base along with the billions of dollars worth of arms they siezed form the Iraqi Army means they have the means to continue their conquest without any outside help.

If the US wants regime change in Iraq why are we sendng advisors and F16 fighters to Maliki? The Islamic State simplified their name because Westerners were confused by any description longer than two words.

The IS despises and plans to destroy all the governments of the ME so trying to tie them to Saudi Arabia is farcical, there will be no Kings or Princes in the Caliphate.

One thing is obvious, many people in the West are confused, angry and now becoming aggressive about the free agents now known as the Islamic State.

  • The 10k figure you mention is outdated, the most recent guess I’ve seen is 30k and growing rapidly, I don’t think that includes affiliated groups. They are fighting and winning on multiple fronts, they took the Mosul Dam yesterday and have overrun two Syrian Army bases near Aleppo.

I don’t think the IS forces are besieging the Yazidis, they just abandoned their town when it was captured. Arming civilian refugees to fight hardened soldiers is suicide and I doubt they will volunteer.

With the Mosul Dam now under IS control the siege of Baghdad is tightening, they can be flooded or deprived of water and with almost daily bombings and attacks from three sides it may not be long until there are millions of thirsty and hungry Baghdadis.

The Shia Militias may be good at harassing civilians and organizing Death Squads to murder dozens of defenseless women but they have shown little skill at facing armed determined fighters from the IS, an example is Tikrit.

  • This designation for John doesn’t make any sense due to his IIPA conviction but the BOP apparently looked at his whole history which included his time as a CIA agent who was involved in Kidnapping and Rendition in Pakistan whih is listed in the Custody Classification Manual.

Hamas is the only legitimate government, under Western rules, in all of the Occupied Territories because they won a majority in the parliamentary elections in ’06. An interesting factoid from the Battle Of Gaza wiki is that the US and Israel used the Gaza tunnels to smuggle arms to Fatah forces in Gaza for the [...]

What has suprised me about Hamas and their rocketeers is why they have not developed even crude guided misslies to truly target their objectives. If they are unable to develope this technology, which I doubt, why hasn’t Iran supplied the necessary designs and components for building a few more effective guided misslies.
