I will second the person who mentioned Jo Walton. She has a wonderful new book out, ‘Among Others,’ which is, among other things, about reading SF and fantasy. Can’t go wrong w/ the reading list in there. I’d also recommend her alternate history trilogy of Farthing/Ha’Penny/Half a Crown.
If you’re enjoying Hunger Games you might also enjoy Scott Westerfeld’s ‘Uglies’ series.
Surprised no one has mentioned Peter Watts, a Canadian SF writer who is barred from entering the US after an altercation at the border. I just finished ‘Blindsight’ which is terrific (and nominated for a Hugo in 2006).
And I will echo anyone who has recommended Iain Banks’s ‘Culture’ novels (he also has a nice nonfiction book, Raw Spirit, about touring distilleries in Scotland), Zelazny, Pratchett’s Discworld, John Scalzi, and Charlie Stross.
