Hi! I believe you are technically correct. It raises the age to 68 by 2050, and then by 2075 it will be pushed all the way to 69 (this is the original plan). The point is to keep digging in deeper and deeper gradually over time.

We’ve already done $2.7 trillion in deficit reduction. The numbers in that chart are the additional cuts wanted by those parties. 2.7 + 2.4= $5.1 trillion. This is actually $1.1 trillion more than Simpson-Bowles’ original target of $4 trillion.

Thanks for the support! Just $5 lets us put this ad in front of 1000 people. And you are absolutely right – chained CPI is particularly devious. It is nothing more than an accounting gimmick to cut Social Security benefits. Unfortunately, this looks like the proposal most likely to make its way into a Grand Bargain, and one we will have to fight the hardest to prevent.

If you get the 503 – just try refreshing that page. I’ve noticed the site that houses the registry has been a bit buggy the last couple days. But if you try refreshing it, it should work.

ThumbnailTonight at 8 p.m. eastern, Occupy Supply will be hosting a free online discussion titled “May Day 2012: Activism Across the Country.” Space is limited; click here to register. The historical significance of May Day as a day to organize for workers’ rights makes May 1 an ideal moment for Occupy to enter a new stage of activism [...]

UPDATE: Occupy New Haven voluntarily disassembled most of their camp. But police have moved in at 8:00 a.m. eastern this morning, to make arrests and clear out the remaining tents. Check out the livestream below. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled against Occupy New Haven in their request to remain on the [...]

ThumbnailEveryone knows about the tremendous impact the Occupy movement has had on the national conversation on inequality. But many Occupies have been equally instrumental in bringing about major change in their own communities and making a real difference in local issues. The examples are abundant. Across the country, Occupations have saved homes from foreclosure , challenged corrupt municipal officials , [...]

    2012-03-28 11:34:55View | Delete

ThumbnailWhether planting community gardens or organizing actions like Occupy Monsanto , the Occupy movement has been particularly effective and creative in addressing food issues on the national level, in local communities and even within individual encampments. Food sovereignty – the right of people to define their own food and agriculture –  is intricately tied to issues of economic inequality, [...]

Yes – thank you so much to everyone that called. Obviously this is not over yet and Professor Days and co. may have to hear from us again in a couple weeks – but for now a great victory for one of the longest lasting permanent encampments in the Northeast. Thanks again everyone!

    2012-03-02 14:25:30View | Delete

ThumbnailIt’s hard to believe it’s already been six months since I joined the team here at Firedoglake as an online organizer. In that time we’ve launched the Occupy Supply program, stopped the Super Committee from making savage cuts to the social safety net, helped paved the way for major drug policy reform in 2012, and so [...]

Zach Tomanelli commented on the blog post Obama Has Proven to Be an Adamant Opponent of Marijuana Reform

    2012-01-17 14:41:31View | Delete

I would also add the ACLU to the list of organizations who have characterized Obama’s medical marijuana policy as “disastrous for patients.”

    http://www.aclu.org/blog/criminal-law-reform/obama-doj-leaves-medical-marijuana-patients-sick-and-suffering

So the ACLU, NORML, Drug Policy Alliance and virtually every other drug policy group in the country say Obama’s been horrible on this, but what do they know. Andrew Sullivan says he’s quietly leading from behind, and that’s that. If you don’t “accept his premise,” I don’t know what to tell you.

Zach Tomanelli commented on the blog post GOP Primary Turns into Self Parody: Trump to Moderate a Debate

    2011-12-02 14:08:53View | Delete

“I was thinking of writing a joke about how the next debate should be a Fear Factor style contest to see which candidate can eat the most pig anuses while skydiving and answering questions about immigration but at this point is seems best not to give them any ideas.”

I don’t Jon, Santorum hasn’t had his shot to lead the pack yet – could be his moment to shine.
