Stop the Machine! Create a New World!
By Kevin Zeese, Margaret Flowers, Tarak Kauff, and Elaine Brower
There comes a time when efforts to avoid the truth begin to fail, when one can no longer go about daily life and pretend that all is okay. If you are like most of us, you are experiencing this.
There comes a time when one can no longer shut out the atrocities of U.S. foreign and military policy: trade agreements that destroy farming; mass unemployment; especially among communities of color; illegal detention and torture; increasing drone attacks resulting in mass civilian deaths; and once again a President who lies the United States into another war for oil and bankers.
A time comes when one can no longer close one’s eyes to the atrocities of a U.S. domestic policy that steals from the people to add to the already hideously bursting pockets of the wealthy, that kicks people out of their homes, denies needed medical treatment and drives families into bankruptcy so that CEOs can dine on gold-lined plates in their personal jets as they travel from gated mansions to leather seats in penthouse offices.
A time comes when one cannot help but realize that the path is unsustainable and one must make a choice. History is knocking, and each of us must choose how we will answer. What do you want to say you did when history was at your door?
History is not a fairy tale you read to your children at night. It is not something someone else did in another place. History is right here and right now, in front of you. It happens before you realize what is going on. There are events that give hints, but nobody knows when the dam will burst and the flood that gushes forth will wipe clean what has gone before and create a new reality.
When the tipping point is reached, it seems at once both unexpected and completely obvious. We are nearing that tipping point in the United States. We have witnessed the Arab Spring and the blossoming of the European Summer. We ask ourselves if now we will experience the American Autumn.
People in America see that corporate power controls the political process and the media. The Forces of Greed steal our treasure and squander it on militarism and needless wars for empire. Forces of Greed render our White House, Congress and Supreme Court dysfunctional so that the denizens of these bodies regurgitate what their corporate paymasters feed them.
Our country faces crises on every front: the economy, education, jobs, the environment, health care, housing, the wealth divide, an empire stretched too thin and ready to shred. None of these crises has to exist. Just and sustainable solutions are available and known. What stands in the way of all these solutions is concentrated corporate power.
Corporatism is behind the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Pakistan in which thousands, including our own soldiers, but mostly innocent civilians—men, women and children—are maimed and killed.
Corporatism ignores majority support for improved Medicare for all and instead hands billions to the medical-industrial complex while tens of thousands suffer and die from preventable causes each year.
Corporatism prevents effective regulation of the finance industry, stands in the way of a more sustainable energy economy, resists real job creation and is at the root of the foreclosure crisis, while more families find themselves on the street with nothing.
Corporatism blocks effective action to decrease the known causes of climate chaos while the Arctic Cap melts and tornadoes rampage; some face record droughts while others face high-level flooding.
Corporatism exploits human beings and the planet for profit.
Somehow we need to realize that the situation has gone beyond critical and there is no alternative but to act and resist with resolve. Every day the runaway corporate machine moves closer to the precipice; every day, thousands more children needlessly starve or die from wars or disease. Every day, the earth itself is being raped, and all this death and destruction, for what? Bloody offerings at the altar of the god of profit! It has to stop and people of conscience and courage are the ones with the collective power to stop it.
None of us can do this alone. Even the organizations that advocate just and sustainable solutions cannot do it alone. Corporate power is tremendous. It misinforms, frightens and divides us. Our strength is in unity, in the connection that we share: our desire for a world in which humans can trust each other, can work together to create real solutions instead of hating and killing each other.
We are seeing the beauty of this unity in other parts of the world and at home. Across the country there is evidence of citizen revolt. Most only see the big demonstrations—Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, the immigrant marches—but in fact, people in America are consistently in protest against austerity budgets, big business tax avoidance, rising tuition, cuts to education, foreclosures, insurance-based health care and the ongoing wars. On issue after issue there is evidence of people in revolt.
Now is the time to join together and unite our struggles in sustained acts of nonviolent resistance. Democracy literally means people power. Concentrated corporate capital and influence has changed the United States into a faux democracy where Americans only get to choose from two corporate-approved candidates, funded by millions in corporate donations.
The normal tools of democracy no longer work.
October 6 is the 10th anniversary of the Afghanistan invasion, and the beginning of the new federal budget year—an austerity budget for everything except for war and the corporate security state. On this day, we are calling for sustained and nonviolent mass resistance in Washington, D.C. The action, Stop the Machine! Create a New World!, portends an American Tahrir Square at Freedom Plaza between the White House and Congress, a block away from the National Press Club and a few blocks from the Chamber of Commerce and K Street, the stomping ground of corporate lobbyists.
An impressive array of people have already signed on. Among them: Ann Wright, Anthony Arnove, Baldemar Velasquez, Ben Manski, Brian Becker, Bhikkhu Bodhi, Chris Hedges, Cornel West, David Swanson, Debra Sweet, Diane Wilson, Glen Ford, Jane Hamsher, Jodie Evans, Leah Bolger, Medea Benjamin, Mike Ferner, Larry Pinkney, Rabbi Michael Lerner, Rosa Clemente, Steffie Woolhandler, Ted Rall, The YES Men. (Google them, if you don’t know them, each is an impressive leader.)
We know however, that it is not leaders who make change, but people united who insist on change that will succeed!
We are at a turning point. History is knocking. It is time for each of us to decide whether we can remain silent and thus allow the destruction of our planet or join in solidarity to create the future we envision of peace, justice and equality.
Here are three steps you can take right now to create the momentum that leads to a historical breakthrough:
- 1. Sign the pledge at www.October2011.org and say why you’re coming.
- 2. Spread the word by forwarding this newsletter to everyone you know, posting www.October2011.org on your Facebook page and sending it out on Twitter.
- 3. Reach out to organizations that should be involved and tell them to join the campaign.
It is time to turn the Arab Spring into the American Autumn and begin a movement to remove corporate power and militarism from control of our government.
Ending corporatism and militarism is the transformative issue of our era.
You can be part of a great moment in history—don’t miss the opportunity, answer the call.

Dr. Flowers ~ you write beautifully, communicate masterfully, and argue most pursuasively.
And we need this call to action!
Thank You.
Dr. Flowers,
Please check out http://my.firedoglake.com/davidswanson/2011/06/06/our-tahrir-square-dcs-freedom-plaza-on-october-6th/
It’s the same thing. And people are responding to it. Not only with enthusiasm, but with many ideas.
I just want you to read the comments to see that although your piece may not get comments, the same thing is.
Excellent idea.
I’ll be there.
My birthday.
Thanks for speaking the truth. The kabuki game is over. It’s Arab Spring or nothing now.
I’ll offer you a wonderful anthem. Listen to the words. It’s perfect.

Best of luck. And don’t forget the accountability and jail time when it’s over. These fuckers went way past the point of “truth and reconciliation”. They are going to go to the slammer for the rest of their days. In their thousands.
Looks like I’ll have to burn off some of those accumulated frequent flier miles and getting to meet Liz.
Haven’t gone to the pledge site yet for more info, but anybody know anything about logistics? Accomodations discounts, getting to and from the demonstration site, etc?
And just to be clear, are there going to be two days of marches and demonstrations, back-to-back? Do I (we) get a twofer for our expenditure of time and money? (Assuming we make bail — or get released from the ER — from the first day in time to take part in the second day’s activities.)
Finally!! –
And I will be there – and please don’t make it a ‘left’ or isolated ‘progressive’ movement – try to incorporate ‘everybody’ – and especially young people who are absolutely sick and tired of politics –
Open up! and try to take concrete steps to organize the unemployed beyond october. There are millions of people out there and they could become one of the most powerful forces in the US if they would unite or there would be somebody to unite them!
And what perfect timing on the day that Fauxgressive noise-generator, Antony Weiner admits on live tv that he is, in fact, a sleazy shit bag with tons of money and a tiresome habit of asking the gullible to empty their wallets to keep him in clover….
Time to start making people like him start losing serious amounts of sleep at night!!! This is the thing he most fears.
Remember to close all the airports when it’s done. Stop the rat lines. Have the list ready beforehand. Know who your most wanted are, and get them swiftly. The trial must be public, televised and utterly devastating. No mercy whatsoever is to be shown. These people are beyond redemption and must pay for the rest of their miserable existences.
Sheesh — I’ll pretty much have to take a week off from work, but will try to do this thing.
The most effective march we did during Vietnam was a May day during the week not on the weekend, when no one’s in town.
and start posting 170 comments on this threat here and NOT on the Weiner one!
We need a call to action. That said…
DC Marches don’t get any coverage from the corporate media anymore. If all the left is going to generate as a result of flying to DC, yell for few hours, and flying home just to be Amy Goodman’s lead story for the day.
It’s a huge price of resources we do not have a lot of anymore. There needs to be something significantly different about an event to get some coverage.
What can we do to make the event stand out? Just saying we’re mad isn’t getting anyone’s attention anymore.
Excellent article by Dr. Flowers. Too bad it can’t be made mandatory reading for everybody in America.
I read the pledge and it only addressed Afghanistan. I hope that whatever is on the program for the demonstration will address the other things that Dr. Flowers did. And, how many days (weeks?) will it last.
“What do you want to say you did when history was at your door?” could be the slogan for a movement.
My initial thoughts are either everyone going and not leaving until their is change (that what Egyptians did), or a significant fraction of protesters stays in DC and starts a hunger strike.
http://www.ushistory.org/Declaration/document/index.htm
Just read this little link. You will be amazed at what you have forgotten.
The first thing you do – is you get back an Reddit and make Jon Stewart and Colbert join in too!
or better you get Moyers and he gets Stewart!
Forget Jon Stewart. His brother runs day-to-day ops at the NYSE. He’s rebelled as much as he’s going to.
http://blogs.reuters.com/summits/2010/03/29/jon-stewarts-brother-says-mom-pretty-happy-with-both/
The big boys don’t like their traffic disrupted, slowing the cogs who “execute’ the orders for the Magnificent Mindless ‘Merican Murder Machine.
Unfortunately, it turns out that I can’t be in DC. Got a job, and all, and a mortgage and bills to pay. They had to pick a THURSDAY? really…
our sacred honor….imagine that, Tony.
I can’t promise I’ll be there. But with this much advance notice…it’s possible.
http://www.ushistory.org/Declaration/document/index.htm
“And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.”
Today, some folks lack “honor” and seem more concerned with protecting “fortunes,” while destroying “lives.” The corporate wealth extraction process which had the King’s backing and army to do it bidding during colonial times has been replaced by, US. Yes America has forgotten its history.
Perhaps we should all sign a copy of it and present it to The President, Speaker of the House and the President of the Senate on Oct. 6. That would connect those who can physically show with those who can’t.
who cares about Stewarts brother – You asked: ‘What can we do to make the event stand out’ – I gave you an answer and if the ‘old’ left doesn’t learn this time to f… open up and ‘embrace’ the ‘younger generation’ -(who are willing to march for ‘sanity’ AND the unemployed AND the poor IF approached in the right way and not with any weird dogmatic ideology – I (WE) won’t march!
Or maybe an updated version naming names that fit today.
“Now is the time to join together and unite our struggles in sustained acts of nonviolent resistance.”
Agreed. It’s long past time. But FOR WHAT PURPOSE? This is the thing with the “liberal” netroots – it’s great to get together and have marches and demonstrations but what are the SPECIFIC goals? What will be the SPECIFIC demands? We will be sustaining nonviolent resistance for what specific purpose? The reasons our disparate attempts at nonviolent resistance have failed in the past are twofold. 1. They were not sustained and 2. They were basically purposeless beyond basic demands like “no more war.”
This space – the FDL site and other “liberal” sites in the netroots – should have been and still could be used to discuss and determine what the specific demands are BEFORE rallying people to begin nonviolent resistance. It’s good to have a plan and set of reasonable demands that most everyone can get behind before wasting energy acting. Because if we don’t have a specific set of goals/demands we are bound to fail and that will discourage people from becoming involved in the future.
IMNSHO, we need to first determine a set of needed electoral and political system changes that will ultimately marginalize the corporatist establishment oligarchy and use our sustained nonviolent resistance to demand they be implemented. That is the first step because all Americans except the oligarchy and their retarded dupe followers from the hard core wingnut brigade would want to see those changes.
Thursday is perfect and almost every march I’ve been in 20 +, except The Nixon May Day and the Philly March against Iraq invasion, glorious sunshine rained down.
Thursday is excellent, plenty of time for posters and imaginative ways to display them. My choice are cardboard tubes which allow your sign to rise above the crowds, metal or wood will be confiscated for sure, they could be used as weapons when we try to bust loose Peace.
While I’m for protests, this isn’t going to make any difference unless people are ready to protest for many weeks, willing to get arrested, and willing to be possibly physically harmed. And everyone can’t afford to go to Washington. How about like protests in all major cities in solidarity with the Washington protest. Can you imagine protests going on for weeks in Washington D.C. and all major cities. That might do it.
This is a good post. There certainly are issues with corporatism, but I’m not sure what you would replace it with or how.
A march on DC is fine; however, in DC most on the left and right are in bed with quite similar if not identical interests. All of them see nearly the same four corners they have to operate within. It isn’t especially healthy for the future.
Kudos to the partisan orators there who are still able to conjure up convincing illusions otherwise, but sooner or later most of the public will catch on.
Good luck!
Who would be an excellent choice to get on board for this event AND get the “younger generation” excited about it?
Jon Stewart and Bill Maher are in similar places on 9/11.
Bill Maher literally pushed a guy asking abou 9/11 out of his studio. There’s a video of one of Jon Stewart’s staff literally punching out a 9/11 truther in Jon Stewart’s presence.
They are both gatekeepers.
While many have protested on a number of occasions in Washington D.C., it doesn’t appear that those who are supposed to “represent” us pay any attention. Wouldn’t it be a good idea to have a major event such as this in every time zone, at the same time so that people around the country visually see that people are unhappy with conditions?
And as pieceofcake says above, get the younger generation involved. Let them twitter and place info on facebook about events throughout the country. I believe that many of them are beginning to feel the impact of unemployment, endless wars, etc.
I’d think that it would be an important and powerful addition to create demonstrations all over the nation on the same day. Think how many people are unable to travel so far; we’re scratching to make a living out here as it is!
‘gatekeeper’ – man -(you are a ‘adamman’ – right?) – what are you talking about??!
The first thing you could try to do – lose this type of lingo – and then ‘relax’ and then ‘laugh’ and then ‘speaking’ let’s pick somebody who is able to relax and laugh -(Ashton is not bad and somebody who might just have seen on MTV a lot of prices) and lets stay away from the ‘adams’ -(if you know what I mean!)
It’s either The American Autumn or the US fall!
Great post. It’s about time we ‘go Egyptian’!
‘Protests in all major cities in solidarity with the Washington protest’ is a great idea.
I would esp. like to have one in NYC.
Travel to DC is difficult for many of us.
Demonstrations fix nothing as they do not bother the rich and powerful at all. All the demonstrations during Bush’s term did squat. We will not advance unless we elect a third party who will do our work (hard to find honest individuals, Obama sounded really good while trying to get elected) OR revolution, in the streets, at the banks.
Here’s a link to see what well over thousand scientists, engineers, architects, highly trained experts have to say about all this…
http://www.ae911truth.org/
That’s the Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth website.
I think that Jon Stewart can be quite funny…especially when he shows the absurdity of actions and statements by some people, regardless of where they are on the political spectrum. But, whether people realize it or not, the REAL message he is putting out is “don’t rock the boat, maintain the status quo”. Because as he mocks anyone who dares come up with new ideas, whether it’s code pink or the tea party, whether those ideas are good or bad, he is really telling people that he will mock you if you dare to be different.
I hate to point out the obvious but the Arab Spring is a reference to the characteristic of the season
New life beginning to bloom after a long harsh deadly winter of hate, fear and persecution leading to a summer full of life love and peace.
The characteristic attached to autumn is “withering”
America already is in the autumn
If we put more austerity in place we’ll go into the american winter
We shouldn’t WANT an american autumn because that means america is on the brink of things getting dramatically WORSE
Whatever people do at home has to show people are willing to make sacrifices to cause change.
As long as nobody is willing to make sacrifices, there is not going to be any change.
I’m replying to “who to get?” question up thread… no reply button.
MUSE. 30 Seconds to Mars. Coldplay. Radiohead.
That would certainly make my day.
But, through demonstrations we can show a united front on issues, people can communicate on a larger scale, and ultimately if a third party is the solution, it will happen. Frankly, I think the vast majority of people in this country agree that we have some major problems ahead. At this point, some rely on misinformation from the media or groups such as the Koch brothers as to WHY the problems are occurring. People in the tea party want to blame the government because frankly, it is an easy target. But, the problem is far greater than government policies alone. “We the people” need to start having some serious discussions around the country about how to change the direction we are going. Unemployment, endless wars, bad trade policies, a corporate (lobbyist) owned White House and Congress, a decimation of the Constitution with the Patriot Act, too much power within the executive branch, etc. are truly hurting this country. In my opinion, we need to reconcile who we are as people in this country and to start having more compassion for our fellow man. We are all in this together.
Good ideas. See if any of them get involved in these types of events. Can you twitter any of them to see if they might be interested?
Guantanamo is tied to both the USA most outrageous ongoing warcrime (rendition) and is the easiest to force a quick change. Since there’s is no real rule of law in the US anymore.
Force Guantanamo to close.
Will there be FireDogLake contingent? I’d be likelier to go if I didn’t have to cross the country and then spend several days wandering around by myself in what I hope will be a humongous crowd.
Have you called your congressman /woman to inquire where the three missing thoraxes are from the “three Gitmo suicides” autopsies ?
I have and have demanded an answer.
Ask where KSM kids are, also, please and whether they will be allowed to attend their fathers trial.
I’m sorry you’re a might mistaken.
I live by this quote from Lafayette park’70 when Nixon walked among those camped out that night before a huge protest that weekend.
When we assembled against Nixon and the war this is quote I live by, as Nixon was looking over thousands of us he was supposed to have said ” I couldn’t get this many people to come out to support the war’ and that’s when the war ended.
It’s becoming very obvious to many working people we can’t afford to wait until the next election to begin turning this country around. These politicians can’t possibly believe that they can tell us one thing to get elected and then once elected they do just the opposite while expecting us to wait patiently for the next election as they carry out their dirty deeds.
I agree; action is required.
We need actions like this in the streets and we also need alternative political voices reflecting the kind of country we want; not the country Wall Street dictates.
We need to put forward specific demands to solve the problems of the people.
We hear politicians talk about “jobs, jobs, jobs” and then they talk about private enterprise creating these jobs. This is nonsense. With so many people unemployed as a result of what private enterprise has done in creating this mess, only massive government programs putting people to work solving the problems of the people can create the number of jobs required to solve the unemployment problem.
A program for real change…
* Peace— end the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya and shutdown the 800 U.S. military bases on foreign soil.
* A National Public Health Care System – ten million new jobs.
* A National Public Child Care System – three to five million new jobs.
* Works Progress Administration – three million new jobs.
* Civilian Conservation Corps – two million new jobs.
* Tax the hell out of the rich and cut the military budget by ending the wars to pay for it all which will create full employment.
* Enforce Affirmative Action; end discrimination.
* Raise the minimum wage to a real living wage
* What tax-payers subsidize in the way of businesses, tax-payers should own and reap the profits from.
* Moratorium on home foreclosures and evictions.
* Defend democracy by defending workers’ rights including the right to collective bargaining for improving the lives and livelihoods of working people.
* Roll-back and freeze the price of food, electricity, gas and heating fuels; not wages, benefits or pensions.
* Wall Street is our enemy.
We need to ask each and every American, through discussions with friends, neighbors and co-workers; through leafletting and tabling; through “letters to the editors;”through vigils and demonstrations: How is Barack Obama’s Wall Street war economy working for you?
We need to explain to everyone what war is:
W- Wasted
A- American
R- Resources
We might as well be tossing the wealth of our Nation created by hard-working people along with the resources required to fight these dirty wars out into the depths of the ocean or flush it all down the toilet.
Let’s talk about the politics and economics of livelihood for a real change as we take to the streets and build an electoral alternative in sync with these struggles in the streets.
This is a good initiative you have going.
Wow… did you hurt yourself dialing the phone calling your Congressman?
Someone make sure to update this October Surprise for us Left Coast folks, who can’t do DC.
N Frankly by October I’m not sure much will matter.
However, I’m ALL in favor of HUGE demonstrations nationwide, large confrontations with authority and national worker strikes n boycotts.
When that shit happens I hope someone will let me know.
I got game left in me for that.
I didn’t mean to imply that demonstrations shouldn’t be held in Washington D.C., they should, and hopefully in massive numbers. However, I think we truly need to expand to areas throughout the country, not just in D.C. There are people who are hurting and angry throughout the country but can’t get to D.C. If you went into your local city and saw large numbers of people with signs to end the war, or remove corporations from our government, wouldn’t you notice? A whole lot of people are frustrated or angry and would like to voice their concerns.
As for former President Nixon, that would have worked with him because he had some major issues with being paranoid. In addition, in spite of Watergate, I think he was more of a humanitarian than President Obama. So, seeing a sea of faces would have had an impact on Nixon.
The main problem will be that this will be viewed as an Leftist rally.
Revolutions universally come from the people, not from some of the people. If its just some of the people that’s something entirely different.
Some of those other people who dont agree with a Leftist Revolution will be a little upset. How are you going to keep it peaceful?
And how are you going to control the crazies? Those crazies will get carried away with so much time between now and October. Today the idea is an peaceful protest, Im not too sure everyone will comply with the philosophy. Plus as soon as the Socialists start crying about Capitalism a large portion of the country will respond in a negative way.
I seriously think that this march is doomed. When people are already talking about getting arrested and physically harmed, its a good sign that it will be anything but peaceful. And this talk is only right after the announcement, imagine closer to October.
Did you forget that this is a peaceful movement?
Margaret Flowers for President!
and I have a suggestion:I would like to see every employed person
who cannot go due to work committments, sponsor at least one other person to go to DC! There are enough unemployed in this country, that if assisted, could make the numbers on the ground there swell magnitudes beyond Tahrir. I would suggest to this coalition that they push that idea, as well: “Be there in the Square by sponsoring your Representative”, with a sign-up list of potential volunteers to attend, and a paid transport system and paid supply system (such as in WI, with pizzas, sleeping bags, tents, clothing, etc). The fear of Government infiltration is real, but if we insist on NONVIOLENCE, and control and isolate those who would agitate to that end, we shall be successful!
I followed up with a personal visit to his office to follow up, thanks for asking.
I will return again.
And call in sick that day, sick of the direction the country is headed.
Boycott the big boys that day also , buy nothing.
Get what Unions that are left on board, also.
maybe
someone smart, can
set up a vehicle sharing site,
which would reduce individual’s costs, make it possible for people without a vehicle to get there,
and
reduce the amount of gas used…. ie lower the carbon footprint of this effort.
oh
please post travel requests at http://october2011.org/travel
Thursday is the first day, not the only day.
I guess it will take a while for it to sink in what we’re calling for here.
Discouraging to see so few saying “I’ll be there.”
Before making suggestions or complaints about invitees and logistics and all that, I’d suggest actually looking at the site and seeing who has already pledged and what the initial plan is (some of your suggestions are too late). Remember that 50,000 people need to pledge to be there for the next phase of planning to begin.
And, yes, I’ve made the pledge.
I know what you mean. I wish I could say I’d be there. Unfortunately, I don’t have the financial freedom to know I’ll be able to be there.
Those that have the financial freedom to do so generally aren’t on our side, anyway.
