Good morning and welcome to the Thursday Over Easy. oldnslow here sitting in for a very busy Ruth. Thursday is the day Ruth takes a look at the foreign press so I figure why mess with a good thing. Although it is actually a fairly daunting task let’s give it a go;

World leaders discuss climate change in Doha, Qatar this week.
Is Assad looking to flee Syria? Apparently, despite assurance that he would “live and die in Syria,” the Syrian Foreign Minister has been busy in Latin America.
Egypt has exploded this week. I don’t know about you, but I sincerely had extremely high hopes that Egypt would find it’s way. This is clearly more than a bump in the road.
It is here that I would love to give you an update on the Fukushima Daiichi power plant melt down but news is very difficult to come by.
The UN Climate talks in Doha Qatar do not appear to be going all that well. Apparently the ever reliable Heritage Foundation, despite this, has released a paper urging the US government to break away from the UN on Climate Change and blah, blah, blah……. No I will not link to it.
Ireland, you know the model for recovery through austerity, is not recovering. Who could have predicted that would happen?
The typhoon pounding the Phillipines is tragic and the devastation is far from fully exposed as of this morning.
Sorry to slide to the home front but Dave Brubeck, the jazz great died yesterday. If you think you don’t know who that is listen to this and it will come to you. Years ago the CBL worked at a Raddison in Stockton CA and Dave was one of her regulars. The first time she waited on him she called him Mr. Brubeck out of the gate and he was stunned to be recognized. They hit it off and CBL adored the very humble and kind legend. RIP Dave.
That’s what I’ve got this morning Dinerzens, have at it.

Good morning all.
Thanks, oldnslow, appreciate your help very much. The post is slow to show up for purely technical reasons, it’s there, believe!!
Good morning, oldnslow and any sleepy pups just wandering in. Very nice post, and I hope you will consider taking a spot now and then!
I was sorry to learn of Dave Brubeck’s passing, although I dislike jazz so never cared for his music. My ex-husband is a huge jazz fan, and loves what he calls “straight ahead” jazz, the kind Brubeck played. I could tolerate some “smooth” jazz, which true jazz fans sneer at, but couldn’t get into most of the other kinds. But Brubeck was a legendary figure and he will be missed.
Good morning Ruth, msmolly. Very pleased I could pinch hit.
Good Morning, oldnslow.
It’s so great to see your face atop this diary.
Now, to click some of the links to all interesting stories you’ve selected to highlight this morning.
Thanks for the host and post today, Scooterboy.
Oopsie, the Syrian link isn’t working for me. Maybe someone pulled the article after you linked it. You know, they don’t want us to know the truth.
An honor and privilege believe me.
Now, have to get going, thanks to all and hope you have a good day.
Good morning. Late cuz I was listening to “Take 5″ at my FDL from Greg Levine.
Brubeck was cool before it became fashionable.
Here’s the correct link, demi.
Assad seeking political asylum in Latin America
Bye Ruth and thanks for letting me sit in.
Thanks msmolly. Kris & I both checked all the links last night. Not sure what happened there.
Thanks, Molly. Also known as the Road Away from Damascus, one could say.
Good morning everyone. Is the lake loading slowly for anyone else today?
I sometimes think I have been on the road to Damascus my whole life.
Loadings okay from my desk, but when I was up in the middle of the night, I noticed there was some span at myfdl, which seems gone now, and maybe there’s still a few glitches.
(The good news is I was able to go back to sleep.)
JC, I figured I’d get a few Huh?;s on that, but felt certain that you’d get it. :)
Ha! Spam. We’re having spam leftovers and eggs this morning here at Over Easy.
Good morning and thank you very much.
In my browser (Firefox), which shows the URL of a link if you hover your cursor over it, it looked to be truncated. So I just Googled and found the article. No big deal!
Ok, it was firefox acting up. Was taking 4 – 5 miutes to execute a command on an FDL page.
IE is workig perfectly. Might have something to do with the firefox upgrade that I just finished. Weird.
Just read of the bloody fighting in Egypt. Brother against brother, eh? Terrible and no, it’s not going to be over for a long time.
I do, however, have to say that every time I hear Morsi’s name or even read it, I think of the English singer Morressey.
Good morning, and thank you very much. Welcome to the official Over Easy Author Crew. We were going to have tee-shirts made, but we couldn’t agree on a design.
I wanted it to have a velvet paiting of a whale and a dolphin gettig it on. BoxTurtle thought that was useless.
Oh well.
How can sitting down and talking fix a problem when both sides are so angry and filled with hatred?
Mina Nader, an anti-Morsi protester, said: “The Brotherhood must be dragged in the streets like dogs, there is no salvation without blood after what they have done. Morsi must fall.”
How about one that says Que Huevos!
I’ll take obscure movie lines for $1000.00 Alex.
wouldn’t it be ‘esos huevos’?
You win 3 shiny gold iternets.
Nobody spotted my Drop Dead Gorgeous line a couple days ago. Made me sad.
Good morning everyone,
Slow n old, how I am feeling physically this morning and I’m just getting the first couple of sips past my lips.
I was over trying to discover a little more about the organization posting specific to WI sequestration worries.
Not sure. Never took Spanish, but you may be correct. I have a friend who used to wear a shirt that said Que Huevos. BRB/
Same thing happened to me two days ago, I needed to double restart my computer and then the update seemed to be behaving normally.
I saw it but was very busy.
Good morning nonquixote.
Just a quickie Good Morning to all!
Boxturtle (they’re making me work for a living this morning)
Que huevos! A brilliant expression that translates most accurately as “what balls” but really, contextually, means so much more. In the most literal “what balls” sense que huevos can be used to express admiration for some great courageous act; for example, throwing your half-eaten mango at that guy who whistled at you in the street.

I think it works, imho.
The loss of life in the Phillipines is tragic, and the numbers are sure to increase. But, it was good to read that they were able to plan ahead for this one. Still, :(
Oh good lord, the things one learns around this Diner!! ROTFLMAO. I want one of those “what balls” shirts!!
Oldnslow, I can just picture your CBL chatting up Mr. Brubeck. And, I imagine that he enjoyed her very much. It seems like there’s always a good CBL story.
Right? Perfect for All of Us here.
Who knows, maybe down the road a few, we can get some.
Ermahgerd nonq, you’re a genius. I had already restarted and was still having the problem. Restarted again and Firefox is working perfectly.
Oi. I was going with ‘what eggs’ or ‘those eggs’.
Context is everything.
She is the coolest person I know. Her wealth of life experience and knowledge is amazing.
Last night, I was reaching up into the pantry for the ricearoni box, which I made on pork chops, and an onion rolled out and splashed into the dog’s stainless steel water bowl. Made a pretty loud bang. And, what slipped out of my mouth was Christ-a-roni!
You are cracking me up this morning. All of yous.
Kids going to the dentist and Mr. Mom duties call. I will check
back later to see how much hilarity ensued.:)
If she were a character in a novel I was writing, I’d say Claire wore cool like a glove; like a second layer of fine, smooth skin. Or something.
Just scroll over my comment at #43. K?
Christ-a-roni, that’s good!
(now part of my normal vocabulary)
She called me one day when he came in for breakfast. (we lived 2 blocks away) I went and sat with him for about half an hour. They were something together. (the CBL knows music like you can’t believe)His wit and wisdom a match for hers and I was deeply impressed with his humility and grace. He was indeed a very nice man in my book.
Good Morning Sir,
Glad you were able to step in, this morning.
I have a window open on the chat and information, but also have a list of phone calls to go through here. Sorry that I may not be able to contribute much today.
I am having ham and farm eggs, over easy, for breakfast though, and beginning to feel like a more fully formed human by the minute.
Speaking of Mr. Mom, I thought of Popeye when I made my comment.
I hope all is well with him.Anyone heard from him lately? If I
had his E-mail I would check.
Following Egypt on twitter. Fighting continuing tonight. Street to street, house to house. Very ugly.
The fact that I recalled what I did two days ago is one of those things that us “old,” guys can still do, some of the time. ;-) You are welcome.
Dave Brubeck – I Get a Kick Out of You.
He recorded an album featuring only the works of Cole Porter, including a rendition of Anything Goes, but that particular track doesn’t seem to be available on youtube. Damn.
I do have his email, and thanks for the reminder. I will send him a note and tell him we’re still wishing him well. I don’t know if he lurks, or if he’s aware of this incarnation of the Diner. Some of the Diner regulars don’t seem to be.
That paints a nice picture in my head. Yes, I’ve talked with her about music, and I believe you.
Thought of her last night while I was making dinner and listening to The Allman Brothers. Tied To The Whippin Post just kills me every time.
Yeah, where was it I saw someone ask what Over Easy was and you told them. I guess some people don’t look at the myfdl lists. They’re right there, for goodness sake.
Stormy Monday.
Another incredible blues number. Listening in another window. Killer. On my list of best house cleaning music, along with Aretha, Stevie Ray Vaughn and well, like that, you know.
And, do you remember that I’ve got that very same B-3 in my living room.
Have One Way Out on right now!
It was Shoto, on another thread. I also have his email and I sent him a reminder to stop by, but he hasn’t.
I rarely looked at MyFDL until we started hosting Over Easy there, and without “Diner” in the title it’s probably easy to overlook. I tend to skim MyFDL posts and check out the ones that look interesting and have several comments. Unfortunately some of the latter are poo-flinging, but not always.
There can never be too much Allman Brothers. Holy cow.
(And, I love seeing that fierce grin and sparkly eyes of yours every time I refresh.)
You know, so many thought it was a great way to honor SD and carry on his tradition. So? Whazzup with that?
Lord, I just don’t know….mmmmm.
I would not worry to much about who used to be, “regulars,” msmolly. Of course their input is missed, but with Richard’s passing people arrange or have re-arranged their own priorities and time commitments in a different light, I am sure.
I finally had a chance to read the rest of the wendydavis current offering in the myFDL menu. Lot’s of emotion and concern for the claiming of water rights that fits many places nationally and globally.
Have to work now y’all. I will pop in when I can.
Molly, maybe some of the Allman tunes are not your cup of tea, but you might like this one, Blue Sky.
Well, it’s not like we’re losing sleep over it. Just wondering. That’s okay, isn’t it? (batting eyelashes at ya.)
Any thoughts on Washington state’s relaxation of marijuana use penalties or legalization of same-sex marriage?
Legal to have it and use it privately, but still illegal to obtain it or grow it, and still a small fine for public use. DOJ Holder et.al. likely thinking they have something to do again now that bank fraud, war criminality and all that kind of stuff is settled?
I think the most interesting domestic issue that we’ll see played out over the next two years is Washington, Colorado, and the Feds.
I’m hoping that the DOJ does the right thing and leaves those states the hell alone.
Just my two cents, this place is under cooperative management and I am glad I didn’t get, *hands on hips.* :^)
This coop is always open to new membership, too. Maybe we have not been marketing it strongly enough from that perspective.
A lot of the Diner regulars show up later in the threads. There was quite a lively discussion yesterday.
I’m not worried about it. But it does make a difference in visibility since we’re not the first post on the front page in the morning. That’s all.
And come down to it, a lot of the Diner threads were also a small group chatting away, so this isn’t a lot different.
Have I ever did the hands on hips at you? Gosh, if I ever did, I apologize.
I think I better take off for now.
We also need to keep in mind that numbers of comments aren’t necessarily indicative of page views (and we can’t see those). Many — perhaps most — posts I read here and elsewhere I don’t comment on. This morning thread is like Richard’s “biggest booth in the diner” while other posts have a much different purpose. We are who we are.
I have tomorrow’s post mostly finished, and I’ve put a note at the top inviting others who can’t necessarily commit to a weekly post to volunteer to be a sub as needed, or to just offer to take a day if there’s something they want to say. I hope some folks take us up on it.
Kind of, but not as slow as it can get. There are times when I cannot get onto the Lake at all, for several minutes to an hour. Probably my last computer and not the Lake. Don’t know for sure.
Agreeing with you Kris, and was thinking along the lines of how further spreading of these changes being made would eventually influence near international cross border traffic and associated problems.
No you have not and I was attempting to be humorous, sorry.
That sounds cool. As a sub I am assuming that it would involve a more or less ordinary issuance of a diary and following the thread, without editing or login access, is that right? In other words, there is still a moderator at our backside, if we were to volunteer?
Thanks, oldnslow. Great job this morning.
I think a national decriminalization from either Canada or Mexico would go a long way to forcing the hand of the USGov.
Either that, or more states taking action. Enough states and the fed can’t possibly squash them all.
Here I’ve futzed around and am almost late leaving for an appointment. Have a great day, everyone, and I will peek in later, so behave! LOL!
We’re working with no net here, CS. We don’t have any special moderator permissions or anything.
We post these diaries every morning as regular MyFDL diaries and have the same control and permissions as any other user :)
True. We both also have WordPress sites. The stats indicate little to no relationship between page views and number of comments. I think the majority of people lurk. I did, for a long time.
That’s great msmolly. I was thinking more about welcoming everyone to just stop by and feel free to make a comment. Links, recipes, chat, it is all good.
Yes, it is exactly like any other diary. We’ve been using Over Easy in the title, but the topic and format would be entirely up to the poster. No requirement to stay on topic, either.
And Kit O’Connell is the MyFDL moderator/editor and usually promotes us to the MyFDL front page when he goes on duty, and has offered to help us with photos and other things as needed.
Now I’m really out. *poof*
That’s what I thought. The moderator position is like working in Hell, much of the time, I can imagine. It’s a cool job, but it is also very difficult, we have learned from personal experience.
(actually, I have a live “edit” button next to the recommend button that I used to correct a spelling error first thing this morning)
There is no excuse for me not knowing how to size and place photos, but there have been many times when I have been very thankful to Kit. He is really, really good at his job. I there is an appropriate photo, he’ll get it.
Appears he has given us a lovely picture of Doha. Thanks Kit.
belated Good Morning ! to all Over Easy crew …
can’t believe I forgot about your big debut until now (9:15) – damn !
ya done good fire scooter, like, real good
mad progressive love to all
Yeah, feel free to pass my email on to other people subbing in on Over Easy posts and I’ll do my best to help them too when they need it.
Aw, shucks. I do try. Thanks, I am glad to hear it is appreciated. Your posts are always appreciated on my end!
You’re welcome! I hope you’re having a good morning.
As for me, I am slowly getting over my cold — it always takes me so long to recover from any illness thanks to my health. :/
Thanks again oldnslow, work is calling, literally.
Good day, people.
from a piece about the Washington state law going in to effect over at PuffPo
mornin’ doll
Good morning everyone.
Thank you for the post oldnslow. Do we have any eggs left for breakfast this morning?
xoxoxo
Hope you get feeling better very soon. (and thanks again)
Good morning :)
Get a room!
No no no, I don’t believe flirting is against any rules here.
Happy, belated, good morning.
Don’t encourage them spuds. Those or my parents. I don’t want to see that!
- or + are = readable comment.
You’ll just have to get used to the facts Kris.
Old people fuck too.
And we need far less encourage than you may think. :<)
OhGawdJeezus.
I can never unread that, spuds. Never. You’ve stained my purity and offended my delicate sensibilities.
;)
I am so happy I swallowed that coffee before I read this:
Yet, it is so hard for us to get past it, that our parents had sex on at least (in my family’s case, five) occasions. I don’t know if it’s culture, evolution or genetics or the baby boom generation I was raised in, but this subject was avoided.
Never. Give. Up.
Always. Getit. Up?
There, there settle down now. We have never had sex. As far as you know.
The Fabulous David Dayen is leaving us. *sadface*
Then where the hell did Oliver come from?
Adopted?
I caught “programming note” on his page, somehow knew what it was about and didn’t have the heart to read it – damn, damn, damn
if only you had yet to experience the joy . . .
– of hittin’ it in the Applebee’s parking lot after an Early Bird supper
– whiled away an afternoon with that three hour Antiques Roadshow DVD (can you say special features ?)
- don’t get me started on what you can do on a Hover Round (dad’s fave is ‘Life Alert’,I vacillate between ‘Assisted Living’ and ‘Hip Replacement’)
you’re welcome :D
I must admit, I have never blogged about sex with my mom and dad. Just sayin.
They’re incorrigible.
I’m not sure this is the appropriate forum for admitting you had sex with your mom and dad. Wait….what?
Jeess that sucked. Ok. I have never blogged with my mom and dad about sex. Howszat.
Thank you.
Write much??
Ho ho no no no / Junior Buzzard
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuN-tFvgRc0
Oooo no-no-no.
We will miss our superstar, that’s for sure, but if he needs to take a step back, that’s got to come first. This must have been an agonizing decision for David Dayen.
LOL!
Rabbit season, duck season.
Oh no, I go off to an appointment and miss all of the fun! Sex with Mom & Dad?
And OH I will miss our dday! I read his posts religiously!
Oh, Spuds, Sonny has been using that no no no on me for a few weeks now. Funny.
Are you channeling my living room again?
I meant in the Beaky Buzzard voice. So, I showed him your link and we watched, and I said how can Spuds, all the way in PA say the same thing you’ve been saying.
Mom, it’s Looney Tunes. Everyone loves Looney Tunes.
So, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=na7WqSb6sY0, which is why I recognized Beaky’s voice.
Sillyness abounds, no matter who is here or out running errands.
I have perfected my chicken rub and cooking time/temp.
Jeebus this is good.
I’m pulling weeds, trimming bushes and putting in red mini carnations along the walkway to the front door.
Kris, the porkchops with Christaroni with sliced tomatoes and onions on top, simmered together worked really well.
Back to dirty fingers.
I’m gardening too. I can’t keep up with the tomatoes, and the garlic and greens are just starting to come up. According to our Texas garden guide its the right time of year to plant catnip & radishes so those are happening sometime this month…
One of my standby dishes that my family loved was those boxed scalloped or cheesy potatoes, fixed for baking according to directions. Then I’d brown pork chops well, and lay them on top, and then bake the resulting casserole according to directions. The juices from the pork chops would seep down into the potatoes, and the cheese sauce on the potatoes would flavor the chops, and the whole thing was yummy and very easy.
Kit tey boy! So Handsome Man. My name for the guys who live with me in my little.
Cold days and very little light in most of my yard.
Oy. Hope your cold has taken the South Train.
Hot tea and a little warm fire being sent to ya.
(Thanks for all your help with Over Easy.)
Since I had the pork chops, I was actually looking in the pantry to see if I had one of those boxed scalloped potatoes thingies, but had to settle for the…
Christaroni. :)
Another day, another dinner.
Tonight, it’s spaghetti. Not fancy. Not different, but they do like it and never complain.
I just asked them, I suppose you guys want dinner. Again? Ha.
