Fruits and Vegetables
Yahoo! Health featured an interesting slide show a couple of weeks ago from Rodale, titled 14 Foods You Should Cut from Your Diet. There are some familiar ones like artificial sweeteners, diet soft drinks, and butter-flavored microwave popcorn, but there are surprising entries in the list.
Robert Kenner, director of the excellent film Food, Inc. and founder of FixFood.org, says non-organic strawberries can be loaded with pesticides. I’ve been eating a lot of strawberries lately, because my local grocer has had them on sale, and I try to reach for fruit when I want something sweet. But the plump “sale” strawberries at my grocer are not organic, so I might be better off eating that chocolate!
Bread is another surprising food to avoid. Now we all know that white bread isn’t a good choice, but William Davis, MD, cardiologist and author of the New York Times best-seller Wheat Belly, says that thanks to genetic manipulation in the ’60s and ’70s, bread from modern-day wheat is causing health problems, from digestive diseases like celiac and inflammatory bowel disease to acid reflux, obesity, asthma, and skin disorders. He recommends eliminating bread from the diet completely.
If there is a food that yields extravagant, extraordinary, and unexpected benefits when avoided, it is bread, and I don’t mean white bread; I mean all bread: white, whole wheat, whole grain, sprouted, organic, French, Italian, fresh, day-old…all of it.”
We had an interesting discussion about food a few weeks ago, when Chicago Dyke hosted Pull Up A Chair: Raw, Baby! extolling the virtues of raw foods and enthusiastically describing some of her diet choices. It was inspiring!
Prevention published a list of the World’s Top 25 Healthiest Foods, and if you’re already eating most of them, you’re reaping their health benefits every day! And do check out the WHFoods website for information on the world’s healthiest foods (and why some aren’t on the list!) along with lots of nutrition and healthy eating and cooking tips!
Coke is out with an ad trying to insert itself (as a good guy) in the obesity war. Mark Bittman does a nice takedown. Not all sugar is the same.

Happy Friday, friends! A chilly 5º here in Hoosierland, about 6″ of snow on the ground.
Not one of the swordfish alternatives listed taste like swordfish.
Artificial sweeteners enabled me to lose and keep off more than 50lbs (275 to 215 makes a difference).
I’ve really reduced my bread consumption. That’s got me from 215 to 200 or so.
I didn’t know that about strawberries. I sure as heck ain’t giving them up, but I’m gonna need to find an organic source.
My family is not a healthy eating family. This is NOT my doing, but my wife grew up on highly processed canned foods, ground fried meat and such and her tastes won’t change.
Boxturtle (At least they didn’t attack my vanilla malts)
5″ and a little over 2″ inches of snow. But the wind chill is something impressive, enough that most of the area is on a 2 hour cold delay.
Deep fried butter. Deep fried snickers bars. And the food police think we’re going to eat alfalfa?
Boxturtle (Well, okay. But not until it’s been battered and deep fried)
I eat a LOT of salmon, wild fresh in season and wild frozen when it’s not, rarely eat swordfish. And shrimp may be my favorite seafood. And yes, I use artificial sweetener in my tea, but rarely drink sodas of any kind.
My son in law has migraines, and doctor told him NO artificial sweeteners. Apparently they can be a contributor.
I bake all of my own bread, but I’m still using flour from wheat that was engineered in the ’70s.
275 lbs is a lot of turtle!
But, congrats on losing so much. Did your wife lose weight also? That’s quite a feat.
I don’t “get” that deep-fried stuff. Is it just the novelty?
I lost about 15 lbs. last summer and fall. Very few sweets, limited alcohol, and LOTS of bike riding. I wasn’t really overweight but the weight loss was good for me, I’m sure.
Good morning all and thanks for the post msmolly.
I can’t help but notice that my favorite food group is NOT on the list of things to avoid. Hooray for beer!
Where are you getting that flour? I would pay extra for that.
I’m not much of a salmon fan. I’ll eat it if I’ve caught it and cooked it, but otherwise I’m oddly picky. I can taste a difference in freshness after just a couple hours.
Boxturtle (I’ve also heard that about migraines)
Good Morning, oldnslow.
Get your daily hops? It’s good for the attitude, I hear. :)
Good morning guys! Sorry I missed out yesterday, I will have to go back and have a look, but I was incapacitated with a migraine, unable to type, speak or look at a screen.
Our dumpster has been delivering huge numbers of bagged organic salads lately. For fruit, we have oranges at the moment, but we do get a lot of strawberries as well, so I suppose by body is just a Superfund site.
Thank you, and Box, that’s a lot of weight, congrats, but be careful with losing too much too fast! Just caught the migraine/sweetened connection, and I am going to cut that out, thanks.
The flour is probably part of the same stuff the article up top says to avoid, because the grains were “engineered” in the ’70s to increase yield and it’s bad for us.
I buy Hodgson’s Mill flour, but I’m not sure it’s better than any other. My bread book advises buying flour from a source very close to you, but I haven’t found one. A friend’s sister grinds her own flour and my friend claims the bread made from it tastes better. I just content myself with the fact that there are no preservatives or artificial additives in my homemade bread.
Good morning firedogs. Thanks for the post and host msmolly.
The way we eat in this country has been heavily changed by a couple of factors over the last 40 years. The first was the mother leaving the home, the 2nd was the advent of the extended commute.
A lot of people no longer have the time or energy to cook well at the end of the day. A lot of people don’t have the money, either. Sad.
I don’t eat organic. I figure my pack and a half of Marlboro Reds a day will kill me far quicker than GMOs.
I have made an effort lately to cut red meat way back in our diets. We were using ground beef in various meals 4-5 times a week. I’ve taken that down to 1 or 2 in the last month or so.
It’s tough with the kiddos. Especially my little one. She’s a very picky eater and has very bland and ‘safe’ tastes, so getting her to try a piece of fish or some tofu is pretty much out of the question.
My son in law takes a med that stops a migraine in its tracks. But it is very expensive, so likely out of reach of anyone without health insurance.
My glorious new health insurance requires us to pay $4,000 out of pocket before any coverage kicks in. Including prescriptions. So Lexi’s migraine medicine is out the window at $182 for 9 pills.
Luckily Excedrin migraine works well for her, so she’ll just be taking that instead.
The best gift you could give your family is to quit those cigarettes. I quit for good (after several tries) in the ’70s, and I’ve seen friends and acquaintances become seriously ill or even die as a direct result of smoking. I was a 2-1/2 pack per day smoker, so if I could do it, you can.
I’ve no clue. Frankly, it sounds so revolting I’m not sure I could even try it.
But I’ve eaten squid, so I should be able to eat anything.
Boxturtle (Likeing it is a different issue)
My son in law has a similar insurance plan, I think. They have to rack up $5000 and then after that any doc visits or prescriptions are free. But the $5000 is out of pocket.
Sometimes the OTC migraine meds do work for him, but not always.
I like squid — calamari! Yum.
157,000 new jobs reported.
Unemployment is 7.9%.
December jobs revised up by 40,0000.
It was some time ago. Now i sit at 200, my Dr says that’s close enough IF I’d move some of my waist to my shoulders. :-)
Ya know how you live in denial about things you don’t want to do, like diet and exercise? That’s what I did for a long time. Then a garage mechanic gave me my inspiration to lose weight. He said to me “I’m gonna adjust your alignment more to the right, you’re a big guy and I think it’ll run better”.
Boxturtle (When they need to adjust your car to allow for your weight…)
Imitrex. It came off patent recently and went from, hold onto your hat, $32.00 per tablet to 9. (I got it for 5 in Seattle). Best drug ever invented, but for me, I must take it pretty early because of the violent vomiting. The shots are the only hope, but when one gets full-blown, I’m too sick to even go to an ER and get a shot.
What are you saying? Marlboro Reds aren’t on the list! Next thing you’ll be trying to tell me is they are not a food group. That’s just crazy talk!
Good morning demi. Yes, I do like my beer.
I know that I have to quit. Kristen and I both smoke, so it’s tough. There are times when I feel like quitting, but she’s not on board. I dunno. Anything I could say about not quitting sounds like a weak excuse, and I’m not a weak or an excuse-making kind of guy.
I think the reality is that I just don’t wanna quit right now. I know I need to, and that quitting day is somewhere in my not-too-distant future, but it’s not right now.
That’s a funny story, good on you for having a doctor follow as well. Align the car. LOL!
Eat right. Don’t smoke. Exercise. Die anyway.
Boxturtle (On that thought, I think I’ll have some cheesecake at lunch)
Weird how we keep adding jobs but unemployment keeps hovering at 7.9%.
Oi. I like his plan better.
After our $4,000 the insurance still only covers 80%.
The only thing free are biannual wellness checks for me and the kids, and biannual checks for Kristen + the annual women’s checks.
We went to the cbl’s restaurant last night and bought a whole pie. Chocolate silk pie.
Eff Tee Dub.
Depends on how it’s prepared. There a local place that pan fries it, with olive oil, lemon and fresh ground black pepper. Heavenly! Then you have Red Lobsters deep fried rubber bands.
Boxturtle (Wonder what’s involved with prepping a fresh squid for the table)
I picked up a perscription yesterday. Insurance paid $30.00. I paid $140.95. Motherfuckers. I really dislike insurance companies.
I switched to American Spirits years ago. I have never been a heavy smoker, but my doctor points our that 4 or 5 a day is still 4 or 5 a day.
True story: Fred was a very heavy smoker. He had ashtrays everywhere, drove me nuts, but I could hardly complain, because I smoke. One day, maybe 3 years ago, I’ll never forget it. He had a cigarette lit and had smoked about half of it. There were cigarettes in the pack still. I was sitting next to him. He said, simply, “That’s it. I’m done.” He put the cigarette out and he has not smoked since. It was at least 3, maybe even 4 years ago. Most amazing thing I ever saw.
Imitrex isn’t the med he uses. I think it’s Rizatriptan (Maxalt). Nearly $1,000 for 30 pills.
Too many zeros or the comma misplaced? WI was reporting more UI claims in each of the last few weeks. Isn’t 250K new jobs each month what is needed to keep pace with new workers entering the job market? Are you simply reporting or disappointed with the figures? Which set of numbers are you reporting?
Hi, oldgold, I felt so bad the other day, because I think I missed saying hello to you, so good morning!
Thanks, msmolly, love veggie foods, but I do all kinds. And I’m surprised to see whole grain breads dissed, I am very fond of the bread that’s full of seeds and whole grains. I know wheat is not the only basic element for bread, it’s just that wheat is so easy to process that it’s been dominant in the industry.
BTW, how’d that doctor’s appointment the other day go?
And, something’s screwed up. The dentist assistant called the other day to tell me that when she submitted the paperwork for my last procedure, the health insurance rep told her I’ve been cancelled. The mister is going to look into that. This is not the week for me to get him by a bus or break my glasses. I feel vulnerable.
(I’m sure it’s some sort of glitch.)
Hit by a bus. Sorry.
I have been through it, and it’s hard. My husband smoked too, cigarettes AND a pipe (which I think he inhaled). We both gave up cigs, but he smoked a pipe for quite a while longer.
I think the biggest motivator was my kids. I didn’t want them growing up in a smoke filled house — and by the time I quit they were in elementary school, so were still very exposed. I clearly remember bottle feeding my infants, sitting in a rocker with a lit cigarette in the ashtray on the side table. So I am no angel!
And I’m aghast at how expensive cigarettes are. I think when I smoked they were about 75 cents a pack.
Terrific. When I stopped for good, it was because of a bad sore throat that made the smoke unbearable. One of the best colds ever.
Seriously? Wow, and Maxalt never really did the trick for me. My favorite triptan is Relpax, then Imitrex. The Relpax price is about on par with that Maxalt, so I use Imitrex. Some of the pharmacy companies are just robbers.
That is a consequence of the added number of people coming into the job market.
It is likely that as the job market improves the unemployment percentage will tick up.
I love vegetables, but I don’t think I could ever be a vegetarian. I eat very little red meat, and when I do it’s often lamb (which is higher fat than beef, unfortunately). But I love any kind of poultry, especially chicken, and I love fish.
Last summer when local tomatoes were in season I roasted several batches with onion and garlic, then put them in the Cuisinart with fresh basil and processed only to a chunky state. Then froze this sauce in 1-cup portions in sandwich bags laid flat, and now they stack in the freezer and I thaw one whenever I want pasta. Mostly don’t add meat, but I could, of course.
Drop 1 scrip add another, blah, blah, blah. Bottom line is I’m OK but getting older.
Morning msmolly,
I’ll have a little less flame retardant in my sports drink this morning please. Saw that at the Rodale link sidebar. Pepsi, world conglomerate in per fect har mon y. Second verse same as the first.
He said his doctor gave him samples of several different meds to try. The first one he tried worked, so I don’t think he tried any of the others.
When I read about it, the description says if it doesn’t work it might be likely that the headache ISN’T a migraine.
I’m glad you’re ok. I’m still trying to adjust to the Getting Older part.
(My beautiful body, what’s happened to it?)
I take only two prescription meds: one low-dose blood pressure med and one for cholesterol, the latter my local pharmacy gives away free! Apparently they did a study and discovered that getting people into the store to fill a prescription resulted in them making lots of other purchases. They also offer one other “maintenance” med free — don’t remember which it is — and a few commonly prescribed antibiotics.
This is a big store called Meijer — some pups in the midwest are familiar with it. One of those “everything under one roof” places, but orders of magnitude better than Walmart.
True enough. The triptans all work, I think, but over the years I’ve noticed that some are better than others, for me. If a triptan doesn’t do anything at all, it’s not a migraine.
Does it clean up oil spills though?
I’m a Mountain Dew person, talk about high-octane. Shit probably would peel the paint right off the walls, I don’t even want to know what’s in it. It’s pretty common for sober people to drink Mountain Dew, and I am no exception. Crap oughta be Rx only.
Always looking on the bright side, sister. ;-)
you’re a braver ‘man’ than I am, Gunga Dinh
Whatever you do, don’t smoke Dorals. I live in Kentucky, and have talked to tobacco strippers who have told me that Dorals are the sticks and dirt swept up off the floor at the end of a day, “I know,” said the guy. “I’ve done it.”
I’ve heard of them but they are not in our part of Texas. There is a Walgreens on every other corner here though. I think they are having a turf war with CVS.
Truth be told the folks at the Walgreens in our little town are very good to me.
That’s what my son in law drank — diet Mountain Dew — before his doc warned him away. He’s not a coffee or tea drinker, and I think he’s drinking regular Pepsi now. Along with his 2-hour (each way) commute and his desk job, he’s definitely getting pudgy.
From the Rodale.
Geeze, I have to quit using butter, too. Soft drinks were dropped when the went to over $.25 for a can from the machine. That’s been a couple of decades, iirc.
I didn’t realize they were outside the midwest! When I first started shopping there, in the ’70s, they were Meijer Thrifty Acres. They started in Grand Rapids, MI, and the Meijer family has been very generous philanthropers in G.R.
Morning all. Sworw off soda years ago. As the grandson of two Vintners
Viva la vino. Try to eat a lot of fish. If it is a less flavorfull variety I just slather it with salsa and bake it. Lots of veges.
That’s how I quit meth!
(seriously)
Cigarettes are really expensive. We don’t smoke in the house if the kids are home, and we make sure to air the place out before they get home. I try to limit their exposure to it.
Doesn’t help with MY health, but it helps with theirs.
The CBL keeps sayin the same thing. (Even though she catches the little busboys checkin out her butt all the time)
I take back the flaying!
When I made a favorite soup a few weeks ago, the recipe calls for canned diced tomatoes, and I had read that canned tomato CANS are lined with BPA, and to use diced tomatoes in glass jars if possible. The grocery didn’t have any in glass, so I just bought the ones in cans, but I wonder how easy they are to find.
More BPA in stuff than I think we know. That Rodale website has a lot of interesting info, pretty well sourced. They actually publish health and fitness magazines, so I was suspicious at first.
I am not surprised that a doctor warned him away. To be honest, we are just mostly sticking with a generic Sprite for our soda choice. I don’t like Colas, and while and Mountain Dew is way better that the unbelievably cheap rotgut Vodka I used to drink, still. Stuff seems kinda dangerous.
They’re soft drinks because they soften up your system?
Ha! Yes. I’m not as unhappy with my bod when I’m wearing clothes. It’s the getting nekid part that’s a little scary.
(I was still wearing a bikini at 50, but the last 10 years has really taken its toll.)
I love red wine. Any recommended ones? I upset conventional wisdom and drink red even with poultry and fish (when I’m dining out). Only a glass of wine in the evening at home, rarely with dinner.
Soften up, as in “dissolve” probably. LOL.
If you actually make it yourself, you can use all sorts of healthfood ingredients, I understand. Of course there in the foothills there’s a long history of ‘corn squeezin’ as we used to call it, which is at least as poison as soda.
I try to buy domestic and also local CO. Like you I prefer red regardless but occassionally a white.
Fatster had the link last night on unemployment claims being up.
From the song, “killing me softly…”
I don’t make it but see the vinyards. Better than some of the imports using banana peels and blood.
Sells more tummy cures, too, it’s entrepreneurship in a bottle/can.
Oops, that was for Kris, sorry!
Locally made is definitely the way to go.
Good morning pups. Late to the party all week.
Kids start school two hours late today. So they Monday for ice, Tuesday for fog, Wed. for blizzard, and today cuz its too da*^ cold) :)
Every big manufacturer has a brand made of the leftovers. My future brother-in-law works for Phillip Morris and told me the same thing.
Softies!
Most folks that I have observed quit anything just quit. Very very hard to do with cigarettes though. I didn’t smoke when I was in the Joint (BOP banned tobacco), and didn’t miss it at all, for the most part. I should have stayed quit when I got out, but sigh, well…I didn’t.
Jim and John Harbaugh live presser right now. Funny as shit. One of them answers a question, the other one says ‘I concur’.
I love these guys.
off to the mines, thanks for good company.
I quit for 24 days once, about 6 years ago. Biggest mistake I ever made was starting again.
Exactly. It’s why I don’t ever eat raspberry jam from a store. I have seen what goes into Smuckers with my own two eyeballs, back in the day when I picked berries in Oregon.
Bye, Ruth!
I’ve been buying one of the slightly better box wines, Bota Box by Delicato out of California, their Old Vine Zinfandel. Far from fine wine, but for my nightly glass it’s okay, and the price, ~$20 per box, or $5 per bottle, is reasonable. I would choose something else for guests, or to take as a hostess gift, though. I like Seven Deadly Zins!
I concur! (I used to walk uphill both ways to school when I was young) :)
Since I have no health insurance I have to take care of myself.
I like Shiraz and there are a lot of good Cabernets.
Box wines are OK for daily house wines.
Unbelievable. I hate that about butter. I like real butter, real sour cream and whole milk. We stumbled onto Faje Greek yogurt in the dumpster a while back, became hooked, and now buy it on occasion, six dollars a container, how do you do, and thank you. Anyway, that stuff is about as close to sour cream as you can get. There have been days when all I ate was Faje greek yogurt.
BTW, the hell is happening to the prices of groceries? Smaller packages, same price. Higher prices. It’s amazing people aren’t starving.
We have 2 choices (besides our dumpster): Walmart and Supervalu. We are in that category of people who go to Walmart because we are, well, poor. I know all about how Walmart undercuts the other stores, and I don’t like it. But the people who work there are just such good people. In our town, you can actually get a hug from the greeter, no kidding. We eliminated Kroger when they sent scrap metal to the landfill after the Ohio flooded. I told Fred, I won’t shop (such as it is) at a plave that sends scrap to the landfill! I am sure they don’t miss us.
Thanks msmolly for the reminder to watch what we eat when there is a chance that it can be discerned.
Well put!
I guess the new Pound is 12 oz. Started with coffee
several years ago.
I like Chobani Greek yogurt, always have a couple of containers of nonfat Chobani with fruit in the fridge. Their pomegranate and their peach are wonderful. I think it’s made in upstate New York.
Butter was up to $7./lb right before Thanksgiving up to a week before Christmas. Everybody uses it for seasonal baking I think. It has been on sale for almost a month now @ $5./2lbs.
I think people ARE starving. I go to the regional brand name grocery, lots of WI originating products, but on senior day 5% off your total, take a look at the little bits of things that some of them are purchasing. Very little real food in their baskets and usually not enough at the checkout to fill a grocery bag.
Sneaky way to raise prices — change the quantity. My daughter pointed out a couple of years ago that the “half gallon” container of ice cream is no longer a half gallon, it’s 1.5 or 1.75 quarts. And I make burp cloths from cloth diapers as a baby gift occasionally, and the instructions I use online are from 2007. The author of the instructions shows a package of cloth pre-folded diapers, and there are 12 in the package. My local Walmart has the identical (looking) package, but there are only 10 diapers in the package.
Now one can argue that ice cream ingredients have gone up in price, but diapers???
Even toilet paper is going that way. The roll is narrower and the tube is bigger. Looks the about same. A lot less paper on the rool.
You too? The road lead downhill from my house and then back uphill to the school. Longest half a city block ever, on some mornings.
(looks about the same, is what that should say)
I buy Iams dogfood for my dog.
8 lb. bag at local store
7 lb. bag at Walmart
Did you mean to say ‘rool’, though?
Barefooted, right/
back from the mines.
Georgia/Pacific acquired by Koch Industries for $21B in 2005. When did I start noticing the shrinking rolls of TP?
since the babies are eating less out of the reduced size containers they will have less to fill the diaper with, silly!
Texas’ loss is Pennsylvania’s gain. :)
Glad you are back online. I enjoy your wit and grace.
My sister and I just had the toilet paper discussion. And it’s that way with everything. Coffee was notable in the beginning. We noticed the paper shrinking a few months ago, I think.
You’d think groceries were made of gold, and at the same time, the waste is mind-boggling.
I’ll give that a try, thanks.
Thanks very much. Took awhile to get back to being online.
Really? I’ll have to look at that around here. I buy at Krogers (union shop) and have as little as possible to do with Wally World.
My three beasts will eat a large bag in less than a month. Oddly, despite their sizes, they like the MINI chunks.
Boxturtle (Perhaps because they can fit more in their mouths at once. Slobs)
Someone is taking Subway on for providing less than advertised.
Here.
I buy my TP and most other similar things at Costco. 425 sheets per roll; dunno how that compares to store brands. My membership pays for itself many times over, even though I have to go to Costco when I’m in Indianapolis.
Sam’s Club has similar pricing, but I avoid shopping there.
I haven’t been to Wally world since I used up the last
gift card year before last. King Soopers and Sprouts is
where I shop. King Soopers is what Krogers is called here>
It was top rated a couple of years ago in a survey done in CA by the Chronicle. The tip-top rated Greek yogurt was Trader Joe’s, but I think Chobani was second. I’ve been eating it ever since. We don’t have Trader Joe’s here, although there are rumors it’s coming this year.
Will be missing Krogers now. They were my staple in TX.
Interesting! I wonder if the length measurement of a sandwich would be difficult to prove, given that there probably are fluctuations in any baked product. But it would definitely be a way to raise prices unobtrusively. Who’s going to measure a sandwich?
The ice cream thing was interesting because the containers looked the same when they were on the shelf. I don’t know if putting the old and new side-by-side would make the difference more noticeable, but if all that appears on the shelf is the new one, it would be very hard to see that the contents were reduced.
got it right in one place and wrong a few words later. Thanks for noticing though. I have a great deal of difficulty typing and spelling. Probably because I’m old.
Buying fresh ground coffee, bulk flour and steel cut oats, getting cheaper.
That’s ‘better’ to the young ‘uns.
This morning’s discussion leads us to the inevitable question, “is this roll getting smaller or is my ass getting bigger?
(ducking and covering)
Food!!
Sadly, when mr removed a wall between our old, tiny galley kitchen and our living room two weeks ago to rearrange the space, we lost the ability to cook in the shuffle. We’ve been eating cheap, crappy takeout and I feel like I need a real meal. Ack.
You are just a kid, oldnslow. A child, I tells ya!
I’ve really gotten into local, homegrown, etc. foods, as I’m sure people here have noticed with my frequent references to our Farmer’s Market. Unfortunately a lot of the local stuff isn’t cheaper, so probably out of reach for those of modest means who have families to feed. I’m far from wealthy, but living alone I can indulge myself with milk from grass-fed cows, free range poultry, fresh fish, fat brown eggs from free-range hens, etc.
Your call, nonquixote! HAHAHA!
Hi ((Ruth)). I haven’t “seen” you lately. How’re you doing?
I used to say, “I’m not getting older, I’m getting better!” To which my (then) high school son said, “You’re just getting better at getting older!”
He’s 46 now, but still a smartass!
The roll is is not shrinking. It’s the skin thinning and drooping from age that makes it appear more delicate. You’re welcome. :)
I recommend the salad bar at your local deli or grocery store.
Getting back. Thanks.
Hey, he comes by it naturally, which is what my smartass Kid likes to tell me.
EPU land is getting to be a comedy thread.(you all are cracking me up)
signed, Cabin Fever in NE Iowa
Luckily teh only thing drooping around (so far) here are the eyelids.
Soooo expensive!! I paid $5 bucks for a skimpy Caesar salad *on sale* the other day! The solution to my problem is to get the kitchen workable again so we can eat like civilized human beings.
Must be nice. Heh.
oldnslow means he ain’t old. Or slow.
We got this.
TGIF and a free-for-all at that JC.
I figured it was because your were fat, but whatever. Old works.
Ya takes what you is given at my age. (As with some others here, just beginning the seventh decade)
I’m secretly terrified of typos. With all of the non-refundable airfares that I’m booking right now, one typo could cost $300 in change fees. Even higher on international flights, and the international names are the hardest ones to spell :(
Much better to do your own, but I have found out there are salad bars in some places that are a good buy.
Guess that wasn’t where you were.
You know what sucks about being a crappy speller like I am? I misspelled a word in the title of a diary I posted a while ago. It’s kind of like the blog equivalent of walking out of the public bathroom with TP tucked into your underwear.
Be terrified. I actually got confused with dates, and luckily could opt out of one of my reservations, change it to fit with the air reservation without a penalty. Could have cost me a lot.
Mean, hatefull child.
When I picked that name I was niether old nor slow. Now, it kinda fits unfortunately.
LOL! Awesome image. I am so glad I am not alone. I cannot spell my way out of a sack. My English teacher mother always said, “You can write. But you can’t spell.” Fortunately, I have Mason. He can spell nearly every word there is, no kidding.
Also, it’s getting worse with age. Totally obvious words, I often can’t spell them. Common, everyday words. Makes me think I am losing my mind.
I recently told a potential client that a similar alteration could go a whole month, depending on availability of sub-contractors and if they wanted the plaster and paint to dry.
“But it was only two episodes on, ‘this old house.’”
Just kidding a little there, but I have heard close to that. You’re place sounds like it will be great when completed. There is a lot to be said for doing it right and taking the time needed. A local flooring contractor rushed a custom hard-wood floor (walnut T&G) mistakenly read the moisture content in the concrete and after all the doors were hung and trimmed and cabinets installed, etc, it began to buckle and needs to be removed and replaced. Luckily only about 1500 square feet affected.
A-Ha! We knew it, we just knew you weren’t old or slow, at least when you picked that. Still. We seen the pictures. You look like you’re in the prime of your life!
That IS scary! You sure have to be incredibly careful, and have sharp eyes!
Natural selection.
Stop that fighting, you two! (LOL)
I’m gonna have to scoot in a few, lunch date with friends, but I’ll stop by later.
Sun is out, shining brilliantly on the fresh snow. It really is lovely — from INSIDE! But it’s all the way up to 8º now, with a well-below-zero wind chill. Not looking forward to going out.
That is funny! People just think what they see on the teevee machine is real life!
I will survive.
The comic family makes my day. Thanks.
Best news I’ve had in 10 years. My son Kyle has accepted a job offer! The legal market is really really tough, if folks don’t know. He passed the CA and MD bars and is DC pending; will be working in Maryland. Just got the news, and what a blessing. He held his head high and kept trying, and I know how incredibly difficult that was for him, as his resume is quite stunning. Had to share with my ‘family’ here. Thank God.
Awesome! Congrats to you and Kyle!
It’s just so hard for these folks graduating into this declining economy. There are no words for how happy I am, and how proud I am, of him.
This is satire, of course, but there is so much truth in it, it’s creepy.
Glad for you all. The bar can be a big leap, and he’s got over a lot, there.
Scenery here awhile back;

Yes, the CA bar is the most difficult in the country, I think. He then sat for Maryland because he lives in DC. But, the bar was not the worst of it. It was the job search. That was the hard part. Anyone in law school needs to start that job search by no later than the second year.
That is really beautiful and peaceful.
Do you know the difference between holidays and lawyers?
Billable houra.
People like holidays.
And there aren’t enough holidays.
Heheh. I think I notice more of my spelling mistakes as I get older so I’m more self conscious. Spelling is changing too, though.
Well, okay.
It looks cold to me.
Just was catching up. All ya’ll have been real chatty, haven’t ya?
Well, I propose a toast to Kyle. Congragulations!
LOL! It was so cold today that I saw a lawyer with his hands in his own pockets!
Would you believe that I have done just such a thing myself back in my administrative assisting days? Yep. Booked an exec for a meeting in another city on the wrong day. Got an earful. Luckily it was not my direct boss but some corporate yuk yuk so I didn’t get sacked.
Yes, quite chatty. That picture does look cold, come to think of it!
Here, here!
We’re having a brief period of warm here. Was outside planting daffodils and some purple primrose yesterday.
Sorry, didn’t mean to sound gloatful. Sorry to the cabin fever people. Just remember, when you are experiencing a lovely spring, it’ll probably be hitting a hundred here.
To everything there is a season.
Hear, hear, as well. (((Kyle)))
I’m leaving individual specially engraved invitations to everyone here to attend PUAC tomorrow morning.
Please bring SuperBowl food recipes and ideas. Thanks.
Oh, and Regrets Only.
Growing up in TX, I always wished for snow. Couldn’t be happier, having my yard full in back now.
That’s a good one!
I have booked somewhere near 3,000 flights in my time with this company, and somehow never screwed one up in a way that cost us money to fix.
Miraculous. I know I’ll mess it up someday. Just a matter of time.
Thank you, and thanks for the PUAC notice.
Always have the one using the ticket approve it, then it’s not your mess. And it makes perfect sense that in case there’s any problem, the person flying has first refusal rights.
Those fancy pants corporate types probably spend more taking their clients out to lunch. Mistakes are part of the cost of doing business. They’d be kinda dumb not to budget in the cost or errors. But then management often *is* kinda dumb.
Pardon me, but this video is too fabulous not to share. Warning: gay drag extravagnza!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gm5CTl4X3S4
Fabulous. Great voice, great outfit, loved it. I haven’t been to a drag show in years, since I lived in LA in the 90s. I love it!
Is she not da bomb!! LOL!! I’ve never been to a show in person, but I bet they are super fun.
I just realized I said here, here, instead of hear, hear.
Oye, Oye, Oye!
Oh, it’s great fun! She is awesome. These people can work an outfit like there’s no tomorrow. Makeup perfect, stuff never untucked. Amazing.
ack! i am so late to this party! dammitall.
thanks for the hat tip, woman. i’ve been having interwebs issues today. mumblegrumble stupid internet connection problems.
but yes. wash yore fud. like, with soap and hot water. you do not want to know where it’s been, if it’s not organic. and even then *cough*animal poop fertilizer*cough*.
Those girlz can make a biological woman feel frumpy soooo fast. Watching them do their makeup is mind boggling. There is so much work that goes into making a boy look so good. Do you watch RuPaul’s Drag Race? I’m completely hooked.
Woo hoo! Just returned and saw this! Big congrats to your son!
Lake was down for me earlier. Anyone else have an issue?
I’ll have to check into that!
I am so happy for him, thank you!
It was acting weird for me too. Wouldn’t load the page properly.
Hey! Way late here. C-S, big congratulations for Kyle! I’ll drink to that one.
Thanks, I am still on cloud nine for him. It has been a long road, but he held his head high and kept at it, and it worked!
Ive missed alot of stuff….Checking in to ask Ruth if she is really gone from TX? O My. Good luck with whatever you’re planning. Ive been extra busy, plus my machine needed a bit
of attention. Luckily nothing too taxing…Happy Weekend All.
Beautiful warm in TX…quite nice.
And C-S & son, Serious congratulations. Quite exciting.
Thank you RevBev, and I know you have had exciting news lately as well. It’s nice to hear a little bit of good once in a while.
ARGH. What did I miss? RevBev had news??
Proud Mama(s)
And, for fun on a Friday Afternoon,
Tina Sings Proud Mary.
Talk about Legs to her tits.
Tejanarusa, if you stop by later as you sometimes do, I have a request for someone to handle this Sunday’s Pull Up Your Cat.
Peg’s just down for a short count, a minor physical thing, but will be just fine. If you could, or anyone else out there could, please raise your hand.
Thanks. :)
Her daughter was elected to be a State Senator.
Um, Wisconsin or Minnesota. I’m bad.
MN, and C-S, I’m really glad for you both.
Molly, thanks for hosting today, fun time.
You got the lucky 200. I wonder what the prize should be…
I saw it sitting there and could not resist. Just finished upgrading anti-virus stuff on three computers and stopped in for a read. Political activism initiatives today, research for some potential work today, house cleaning, laundry, grocery list, always a few dull moments. ;^) Just finished a great lakes salmon fillet for supper, broiled, a little butter and lemon.
Close to zero outside, hanging inside for much of the day.
Instead of salad for the prequel, oatmeal cookies and bourbon.
Beef. Pasta. Bread. It’s what’s for dinner.
Washed down with beer, followed by an after dinner cigarette. Bon Appetite!
Cuddle down, hon.
Blankies and fouftooted btu’sus.
Take good care, nonquixoate.
Whatever your name is.
Thanks! It WAS a good discussion today! Even the off-topic stuff (like smoking) was interesting and definitely related! Now, what should next Friday’s Free for All be? Hmmmm….
Oh, yeah. Case of CRS. I remember reading about the swearing-in. Thanks for the reminder.
Been doing my salmon lately in the microwave. Little “sauce” of lemon juice and dill, thoroughly mixed, add a tablespoon or so of EVOO and mix again. Pour over salmon, micro a minute or two (depending on thickness). I sometimes do a minute then flip over and do another minute. Bathe in the sauce. Then serve, spooning the sauce over the filet liberally. YUM!
If you didn’t want to micro you could saute in a pan, same drenching of the filet in the “sauce.”
Whoa…not sure what time zone we’re on, but looks like people checking in late,so I’ll risk saying hi…
Very interesting discussion today,so sorry I missed it live. I decided to go out to get my tasks done without getting on the ‘puter at all, eliminating the temptation to get stuck. That’s what’s happened all week, so figured I’d just avoid it today.
I can’t believe butter could have fire retardants … does that mean buying fancy imported European butter would be safer? Sigh. Nonq’d butter prices are shocking, though; I think our store brand costs under $3.00/lb.
Crane-station, congrats to your son on landing a legal job. That’s positively a feat in the current economy. Don’t suppose any of my suggestions led to the achievement?
demi I’d be happy to do Pull Up Your Cat this Sunday. so sorry to hear that Peggy’s under the weather.
Shoot, forgot to say (((Hi, Ruth))) – so glad to see you back.
It’s weird, your part of Texas is hours away from my part, but I find myself missing you, sad that you’re no longer in “my” state (but I actually have roots in PA, having lived near Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, and my mother’s side going back to 1600′s there). Weird, huh?
Love the photo of the barn and snow. A very nice, well-kept barn, too. And yes, I miss snow, too…was thrilled to get snowed on a little bit while visitng my mom at Christmastime. Hope you’re settling in and we’ll see often, again.
demi, I haven’t scrolled down and this may be covered already, but I’d be happy to pull up my cats this Sun and anyone else’s that need pulling up. I’m an early riser, plus I think there is a ‘post at blahblah time’ option anyway, so let me know if you need me. I am dawn at claviersbaroques.com
If OK w/mods, can delete real email after demi gets it, or whatever. I am sure the En Ess Eh already has me in their files.
Have now read down, see that tj’s got it under control, but don’t hesitate to ask me another time, or even this time if tj’s too busy. I’m ready and I got the cats.
You got the cats, huh? How many? Wait, just drop by on sunday and tell us your cat stories. I can handle it this week, but any and all cat people are welcome.
Currently, a mere five. Highest count was 13, but then the city council ruled that Torontonians could have no more than 6 pets, of which only two might be dogs. I kept my mouth shut, but attrition, you know, so we are legal now, and even have room for one more.
Stories, well, they are cats, and fairly old ones, so most of the action is eating, sleeping, breathing, and more sleeping. I will see if I can get them to do something interesting, or if not, I am sure there are old stories.
