Yahoo! Health featured an interesting slide show a couple of weeks ago from Rodale, titled 14 Foods You Should Cut from Your Diet. There are some familiar ones like artificial sweeteners, diet soft drinks, and butter-flavored microwave popcorn, but there are surprising entries in the list.
Robert Kenner, director of the excellent film Food, Inc. and founder of FixFood.org, says non-organic strawberries can be loaded with pesticides. I’ve been eating a lot of strawberries lately, because my local grocer has had them on sale, and I try to reach for fruit when I want something sweet. But the plump “sale” strawberries at my grocer are not organic, so I might be better off eating that chocolate!
Bread is another surprising food to avoid. Now we all know that white bread isn’t a good choice, but William Davis, MD, cardiologist and author of the New York Times best-seller Wheat Belly, says that thanks to genetic manipulation in the ’60s and ’70s, bread from modern-day wheat is causing health problems, from digestive diseases like celiac and inflammatory bowel disease to acid reflux, obesity, asthma, and skin disorders. He recommends eliminating bread from the diet completely.
If there is a food that yields extravagant, extraordinary, and unexpected benefits when avoided, it is bread, and I don’t mean white bread; I mean all bread: white, whole wheat, whole grain, sprouted, organic, French, Italian, fresh, day-old…all of it.”
We had an interesting discussion about food a few weeks ago, when Chicago Dyke hosted Pull Up A Chair: Raw, Baby! extolling the virtues of raw foods and enthusiastically describing some of her diet choices. It was inspiring!
Prevention published a list of the World’s Top 25 Healthiest Foods, and if you’re already eating most of them, you’re reaping their health benefits every day! And do check out the WHFoods website for information on the world’s healthiest foods (and why some aren’t on the list!) along with lots of nutrition and healthy eating and cooking tips!
Coke is out with an ad trying to insert itself (as a good guy) in the obesity war. Mark Bittman does a nice takedown. Not all sugar is the same.
