More from the November 21st, 2009 Little Rock Free Health Clinic.
Meet David and Jane Carounis. David and Jane traveled all the way from Florida to volunteer. When I asked them why they came, after all they don’t live around the corner, they said, "we couldn’t stay away."
I think Jane summed up perfectly, and dare I say, with great understatement, that the United States will be "damned for all mankind" if we fail to pass healthcare reform, including a robust public option.
I’m heading to the Kansas City Free Clinic on December 9 and 10, to bring more images of the American healthcare catastrophe to the world.
Always remember, the United States is the only industrialized nation where healthcare remains a privilege not a right.

This entire so called health care debate is an avoidance of the fact that health delivery is a for profit business and a source of wealth creation for the corporate stakeholders.
It is considered un american to interfere with the notion that people be denied the “right” to make profits and create more wealth. That is what drives all political decisions for decades in the country – the money.
Unless and untill we diabuse ourselves, and our political leaders of the notion about what America is – and it’s not the freedom to profit and create and protect wealth – we will never see and reforms of significance in this society.
Plan and simple fact – Americans worship money and the things it buys – That is America today especially as defined by the media and business leaders. Health delivery is nothing but a means to make money.
I wish one of these was a smaller trip for me (I live in Indiana). I don’t mind traveling, but Little Rock AR and Kansas City would exceed my finances and vacation days. But I am going to find something similar locally. I’m not in the medical profession, but I can do paperwork and use a computer. Surely they need that, too!
Thank you for this video. I plan to volunteer, when I can locally. No experience but surely can be “used” for something to help out.
Good one David and Jane Carounis!
Thank you to my fellow Floridaians to helping and voicing the truth. If I can find the link I will go to Senator Nelsons office tomorrow.
“Meet David and Jane Carounis. David and Jane traveled all the way from Florida to volunteer.”
Many thanks, Eve. Health care in this country has been sacrificed to right wing ideology, and should play a large part in ending the atrocities committed in the name of Free Choice.
History will look back on the American experiment and refer to it as the country that greed killed.
Thank you again, Eve, for the great work you’ve done to showcase the free clinics.
The truth, just like lies, repeated over and over and over again….
How do you volunteer for this. I could come from Iowa and I do have the vacation days.
Eve,
I live in Kansas City and would like to participate (and meetup with you!!) in the Free Clinic in December. Is there a link to a page with the details?

Hi katiebird, send me an email.
Found it.
If you would like to be a medical or non-medical volunteer for Kansas City please visit http://www.regonline.com/kansascitycare
Thank you, Eve, for bringing us their stories.
We have a health care system that revolves around the profit motive. If you can make more money by prescribing more ways in which to make more money in the healthcare industry why in the world would you not do so?
It’s like any other business. You make money by figuring out ways to get people to spend more money on whatever it is you are selling.
But only in America is selling health care on par with selling plumbing supplies, golf clubs and sex toys.
No other democratic industrial nation around the globe puts the health care of its citizens on par with the stuff they buy at WalMart.
The public option is basically a red herring. It’s a way for “liberal” Democrats [many of the most powerful of whom are as cravenly beholden to K Street, Big Pharma and the Insurance behemoths as Republicans] to pretend this is as close as we can get to single-payer universal healthcare.
And this is true only because we let it happen. And we let this happen because we put all our eggs in the Democratic Party instead of in ourselves. We should be out there organizing people the way the civil rights, women, gay and anti-war movements did. Real change always comes from below. Even those millions of Obamamaniacs who bought into the audacity of change literally have basically been subsumed [by Plouffe, Emanuel and Obama] into the DNC.
Yes, those who volunteer at clinics can go a long way toward exposing the predatory nature of our broken down health care system. But far more crucial is the need to politicize this from the ground up. The Democratic Party is on our side with respect to most social issues. But with respect to multi-billion dollar economic issues like healthcare it is just the Republican Party lite. They are both creatures of Wall Street.
I’m both volunteering and going as a patient. KC is a great city, full of good folks. The KC Star had a lead article this a.m. about the volunteer spirit. My concern is that there’s been virtually no publicity for the upcoming free health clinic except on KO, and I think many folks who need the care don’t have cable tv. I’m not sure how people will know about this without the help of the local media. Anyway I can help with that aspect?
Oh come on, the US is already “damned for all mankind”. The US’ list of atrocities against humanity is staggering. The latest in illegal, unnecessary invasions and occupations; torture, indefinite detention, and human rights abuses; and corporate giveaway health care avoidance are just the latest in the sordid history of US’ inhumanity to Man in pursuit of insatiable greed.
I am registered to help (non-medical) from setup on Tuesday through tear-down on Thursday wherever they need me. I’ll schedule the vacation time tomorrow.
