Statement from the Network of Religious Communities with regard to the forcible removal of the Occupy Buffalo site from Niagara Square.
Buffalo had a national reputation for its dealings with its branch of the Occupy movement. The Mayor boasted that Buffalo was one place that had “done it right” with regards to the Occupy movement. That ended at 2:00 am on February 3rd when excessive force was used and needless destruction occurred at the peaceful Occupy Buffalo Site.
The Occupy Buffalo movement acted responsibly, non-violently, and cooperatively with the City of Buffalo. They cultivated good relations with the police. They negotiated an agreement with the City, which committed them to reimburse the City for costs, vacate the Square when it was needed by others and to leave Niagara Square in good condition when they moved on.
In October of 2011, The Network of Religious Communities Board of Governors issued a statement praising the nonviolence of the Occupy Buffalo people. This month we decry the violence with which the city of Buffalo removed the Occupy people giving them neither time to come to an agreement among themselves or to remove their belongings before they were bull-dozed. This act was completely unnecessary and is unworthy of a city that calls itself “The City of Good Neighbors.”
The Occupy Movement has brought many inequities and abuses of power to the forefront of the American consciousness including issues of economic justice and corruption in politics. We applaud their continued nonviolence and their dedication to keeping these issues before the public eye. We commit ourselves to ongoing work with the Occupy Movement to promote their call to justice – a call supported by all of the faiths represented by this body.
We strongly object to the actions taken by the city and call upon the city government to behave in a more respectful way towards its citizens. We are deeply disappointed that our city is no longer the city that “got it right.”

Good for the church leaders who stood for what is right. Don’t lose hope, Buffalo – we have your back.
Social Gospel is increasingly coming to the movement; it’s outstanding!
Thanks, OB, for this diary, and all you’re doing for all of us, and for our nation.
O.K., but why is anyone out trying to live out of doors in the winter without heat ?
Why are health concerns ignored ?
THANK YOU, JESUS!
What health concerns?
They have heat, they have sleeping gear rated for 20 below. Our own government has campers in the Artic testing stuff.
What health concern are you concerned about?
REVBEV,
If you are lurking, just wanted you to know I went, I saw, and I got opinions.
Everything was rolling right along very well until Charles kept pushing his agenda over the participants and even the Author! You, being the gentle but wise Spirit that you are were not nearly as FIRM with him as I would have been. One of the things that was pointed out so well and seemed to fly over Charles was a few facts:
Ayn Rand was an Atheist and her current day followers use Biblical text to further her STALINIST political views.
The wealthy elite and corporatist have no morals in which their mental stability causes them to pause. There is no, and I mean NO responsibility on their part for the suffering they have caused.
And this is where it may get tricky for many people, the Biblical texts in my very humble opinion teach people to work together, support each other even the lowest lepar, and poorest of the poor. That love and caring for the human race does not come at the hands of Corporations owned by a few powerful monied elite.
So, if we know these facts and truths, why then do people follow false teachings? My opinion on that is because they have been taught hate of the other to a degree that they are blinded by the log in their eyes. Also, the FEAR of removing that log which might allow them to see the real speck of truth. That fear keeps people from having their own faith in what they are and can do to better the world they live in.
Ah
MEN!
We in Erie, PA are Occupying without not only heat, but without tents, too. We had the same argument used against us. But because of timely and generous help from FDL Occupy Supply of GI Arctic gear, Mickey Mouse boots, space blankets and more, we are still at it.
Our friends in Buffalo remind me of those fighting for our freedom from England, and I think that whether it be one or many, Baron von Steuben is hard at work.
Hey from Occupy Erie! I saw some of your people in DC while Occupying Congress. We should talk some time.
Health concerns? What a bunch of thin blooded worry worts (just teasing, TNE). I’ll bet they live far enough south that they think “all season radials” are snow tires…
Thanks to our enemies relentlessly pouring carbon gases back into the atmosphere, this has been one of the warmest and least snowy winters I remember.
“…remind me of those fighting for our freedom from England,…”
I am a native of the Philadelphia area where every school child has visited Valley Forge, the site of Washington’s 1777 winter encampment. As the Occupy Movement moved into winter I saw definite parallels with this iconic moment in American History. Well known to historians but less to to most average Americans, the Continental Army emerged from that winter encampment stronger, better trained and ready to do battle with the British.
I expect no less from our modern day occupiers.
Wonder what tipped the balance? Why the sudden about-face? Did somebody get bought? Or threatened?
And yes, a big thank you to those religious communities who spoke out.
