A few months ago, I began seeing popup messages from Google every third or fourth time I logged into my gmail account. They asked me for my cellphone number in order to “enhance” the security of my account. WTF?, I asked myself. How in the world could giving Google my cellphone number help my Internet security?
My wife noticed the same thing. So did some of our friends. As far as I know, none of us gave Google our phone numbers. Then, a few weeks ago, I stopped seeing this pop up.
Then along come revelations about Google and other internet service providers sharing information with the National Security Agency, not to mention cellphone providers such as Verizon and Apple. Such information would easily allow the NSA to link my cellphone number with, say, my internet posts, and to know exactly who I was and to track both my internet uses and my phone calls.
I have a problem with that.
I’m just curious to know if any of you have seen similar prompts in the past year or so, and what you think about this.
