Welcome to the Oxdown Gazette.
It’s been a long time coming, but we’re pleased to have the site up and running.
The goal of Oxdown is to foster a discussion about progressive solutions to our most pressing problems: the economic crisis, the climate crisis, global poverty, America’s place in the world, health care etc.
We hope the diaries and comments will become a vibrant place for debate and discussion.
The community itself will choose recommended diaries. If you think a diary should be on the list, simply hit the recommend button below the post. If enough people agree, the post will appear in the recommended box.
The rules of the site are simple and laid out here. Over time these rules will be adjusted as we develop standards as a community.
Posting a diary is easy. Just sign in and hit the post a diary button in the "Tool Box" on your right. If your diary doesn’t instantly appear in the recommended diary box, don’t worry it’s coming – however sometimes it might take a minute. Posting a comment works just like other FDL sites.
Above all else have fun.
Please use this thread to report the inevitable bugs you encounter as we launch.

Welcome Ari!
It’s great to have you here.
Couldn’t come at a better time. I hope people start digging into the
Bust Outbail out bill and letting us know what we should be objecting to.It’s a target-rich environment.
Yeah Jane!
Wo0T. Looking forward to getting the whole community involved in a new way, and even to expanding it.
Wow This has been a long time coming and I for one am happy the back room boys were finally able to get Oxdown Gazette of the ground! From the amount of time it took this must have taken a lots of sweat and hard work to make this happen. Thanks for all the hard work to get this up and running! I will be checking here constantly to see the different diaries!!
Welcome Ari, and Oxdown!
And thanks to Jane and Pach and Christy and all the techs and everyone who’s worked to make Oxdown not just a vision, but reality.
We will do our best to live up to the opportunity you are giving us.
antidisestablishmentarianism?
Hey Ari!
Since you asked for this, the Blog Roll I’m seeing to the right is showing Open Left and Think Progress twice
Congratulations Ari!
Yay. Now I can write here also. Oh, noes, I’ll have to really edit carefully (considering the standards of FDL). The joy and the agony of the meritocratic process make the idea all the more compelling. I hadn’t even heard this was coming. I get to enjoy it without going through a long, anxious period of waiting.
Win.
Okay, pups, it’s easy to do, give it a try. Join in the conversation with your own diaries. Or visit the posted ones and check often for new diaries.
I’ve done it. I’ve diaried. So can you.
[note to techs, the link buttons in the header run off the edge]
It was a long pregnancy, so to speak!
Letter to The Editor training?
Thank you everyone. So happy to have this finally off the ground.
Geez, you people have no mercy. I am already running as fast as I can to keep up with 4 or 5 threads going at one time and now this. I may have to give up sleep altogether. Congrats and I know it will be fun.
signed, exhausted.
I was beginning to think that Oxdown was a fictitious place (ha!)
A good number of the regular commenters seem to have great perspectives- look forward to seeing some interesting stuff.
I can relate!
Bleg — please go recommend my diary on Oxdown.
Pft! Recommend mine: Bailout May Lack the Votes.
Wow. This is way cool. Now I even have more stuff to read LOL
One argument is that there is a finite amount of resources that are now being used up. Everything will become a matter of environment. The basics of civilization may be revised before anyone is told.
How long before this is the only topic?
“At the moment please do not use AP sources AT ALL.” ; good thought especially in view of their lousy reporting.
New BT
I owned a beauty salon in my township for approximately 9 years…there were two times I need help in the first two years I was open so I asked a friend to help (bail) me out…I paid him back too and I was very greatful however…as a privately owned business I sank or swam on my own …no one in my township passed a law that the township was legally ordered to support me…I was a privately owned business and because I did a really good job the township supported me anyway…had I not been good at what I did I would have failed and moved on to something else…all privately owned business are supposed to rise or fail on their own merits not with congress or the senate or even the executive branch passing laws that keep them afloat long after they have been deemed unnecessary albatrosses around our necks…
What the hell is this gazette? Very confusing now, which site is FDL?!? IMHO this makes it harder to understand and navigate your conent. Just sayin’…
I usually read FDL during lunch. Sometimes I even get to read emptywheel, campaign silo and other fdl sites; not to mention Greenwald, some Daily Kos, and…and…
How will I ever keep up with it all, and now Oxdown! I’m going to need longer lunches, or perhaps like Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series, I will need to learn to be in two places at once.
Awesome! The site looks great!
And Congratulations to the tech workers and code wranglers who have done the heavy lifting to make this work out so cool.
Thanks!
How about including Greenwald and Digby in the blogroll?
Bravo, Ari and crew, and thanks, Jane!
Interesting.
Hi, Ari! Good work! I have a suggestion, though. It may not be easy, but I was wondering if you are planning on having a way to know at least how many people have recommended a diary? I ask, because the blogs I’ve visited that allow diaries or reader posts do have a way of informing who did what. It keeps people honest and serves to point out if someone is out of line or gotten too far afield, such as advocating the violent overthrow of the government and such. Kos has a way to check who recommended the post and so does TPM. Some even have a rating system of 1-5 with 5 being highly rated. Not sure if you would want that, but at least the number, and who is recommending would really be helpful.
Evidently previous diaries link does not work.
Can you be more specific?
I am trying to understand this new format.
Why is it that some Oxdown diaries have a Recommend button, and others do not?
Where do I sign in?
neuro, if you are able to comment, you are already signed in. when you sign in at the lake, it should automatically sign you into all sister sites
thanks, Suzanne
I just tried to post a diary. What does it mean, “you must tag your post”?
I’m not trying to cause trouble, Suzanne.
Really, I’m not!
they are like keywords. if your post is about mcccain, you would use a mccain tag typed at the bottom. tags are search terms to make it easier for others to find your diary
OK, thanks, I will try if I can figure out how to do that.
just type something in
mccheese
palintology
chimpCo
