Yeah I thought it was quite magnanimous of them to ‘forgive’ him.
Now about the Vatican actions during WWII? The Inquisition? The abusive priests?
The Vatican has a lot of their own problems to finish resolving before they go into ‘forgiving’ minor slights such as John Lennon may have committed.

The real question is…did John forgive the Vatican? Enquiring minds and all that, ya know.
