It kinda makes sense that McCain knew we were in a recession and knew that he could never get elected if he acknowledged it, and so he lied. That is the only context (I can think of) in which his claim “The fundamentals of the economy are good” because there was no basis in fact for that claim. Rather than being a big mistake, it was a big lie. A big lie which we’ve become accustom to hearing from our government.
