Sometimes ambassadors are allowed to stay on at the start of a new government. However in this case, this is the right move:
The incoming Obama administration has notified all politically-appointed ambassadors that they must vacate their posts as of Jan. 20, the day President-elect Barack Obama takes the oath of office, a State Department official said.

Time to clear the decks. He brought in ten of his Skull & Bones friends from Yale to fill many of these posts. And, of course, scores of ambassadorships were handed over to the “Pioneers” who raised money for the campaigns. They more than made it all back on the taxpayer’s dime.
These, of course, were assignment to the “hardship posts” like Mauritius and the Seychelles, Tahiti and the Antilles, Italy, Spain and Sweden. High risk stations where one might suffer from excess sun-tan, or ski-slope injuries. Or perhaps “Martini elbow”?
The husband of Mexico’s largest brewer “Corona”…got Mexico’s post. Funny about that Bill stuff being considered a barrier to Hillary’s appointment when crap like this were rampant in the Bush-era. Guess there’s been a change!
Here’s more about the reason that diplomacy was “downgraded” in the Bush era…is it any wonder that Colin Powell and Condi got nothing accomplished?
