General David Petraeus, Central command for pressident Bush says point blank, US violated Geneva Conventions
check out my bold;
“When we have taken steps that have violated the Geneva Conventions we rightly have been criticized, so as we move forward I think it’s important to again live our values, to live the agreements that we have made in the international justice arena and to practice those,” Gen. Petraeus said on Fox News Friday afternoon.
Did their heads explode?…I am wondering how they’re gonna spin this
The republicans thought the general was going to be a front runner for president in oh twelve, I wonder if they think he’s still their guy
On the other hand, the ONLY way the republicans can reclaim any dignity, if they decide to take the offensive against bush/cheney and their programs against our law and constitution they still have a chance to rebuild, if they refuse they have no chance
Maybe this is their first step, (probably not)
Anyway, check out the context, this is brutal comming from Bush’s hand picked "general in the field";
Petraeus made the comment in the context of being asked about the Bush administration’s so-called “enhanced interrogation techniques.”
wow, simply…wow
He then proceeds laying to waste the "ticking time bomb" scenario;
Asked about a “ticking time bomb” scenario — which is often employed by torture’s defenders — Petraeus said that interrogation methods approved for use in the Army Field Manual were generally sufficient.
Bush has nowhere to go does he, nor cheney, nor liz for that matter
Catch the article asap since there’s a video hosted by fox news and it might not stay up too long

I’ve placed a link to this on my blog at TPM. Great catch! Kudos!
Per General Petraeus this afternoon on Fox News:
Among those agreements, in the UN Convention Against Torture, is the agreement to either prosecute or extradite those accused of torture, no exceptions.
Left you a question over at EW here, perris. Regarding that blog on Leo Strauss you asked for. You can reply here or there. Just want to be sure which one it was. Links for both are in that question.
” The United Nations has released a new report on accountability for human rights abuses by the United States, focusing mostly on transgressions during the Bush administration’s so-called war on terror. In a word, accountability in the U.S. has been “deplorable.”
He calls wrongheaded the failure of the United States to track civilian casualties in Iraq or Afghanistan, and he thinks that with a few rare exceptions, the military has done a pitiful job holding soldiers — or even more so, their superior officers — accountable for unlawful killing in Iraq and Afghanistan. “Numerous other cases have either been inadequately investigated or senior officers have used administrative (non-judicial) proceedings instead of criminal prosecutions,” he wrote. “It appears that no U.S. officer above the rank of major has ever been prosecuted for the wrongful actions of the personnel under his or her command.” “

This is wonderful news, perris!
I knew that when I heard Petraeus say that we had officially moved into “that’s old news” phase.
The ol’ playbook never wears thin…
Deny years after it is obvious what you did, and when it can no longer be denied, point out everyone has known this for years. It’s just the silly Libs foaming about “old news”.
And the best part (for them) is… …no spin required at that point.
Just passing by…but this IS stunning! Petraeus refutes even Obama on the sufficiency of our civilian criminal justice system to handle “detainees.”
It’s a terrifically important interview. Thanks for posting it.
Forget how the GOP will spin this the General is working for the Obama White House everything he says is vetted by them or he risks resigning /being fired.
So is this a sign the Justice Dept is getting closer to charging Bushies?
Did Obama coordinate this news story? Are they looking at the polls seeing how the Newsmedia covers this story?
Before they move? What is next in the constant drip, drip of torture news that has been going on for weeks keeping this story alive?
Thank you, perris. Great news! I must study this further.
I do not see how the Justice Dept can spin not prosecuting some Bushies now!
perris, thanks for this! you would think it would make a difference. accountability coma is SO strong. fox anchor/viewer coma even stronger. but let us celebrate truth to power from a military class leader.
what of obama and general macchrystal?
Obama is really disappointing on just about every theater, I hope we can force his hand
