I make it a habit not to listen to Rush Limbaugh because he makes my blood pressure rise and that isn’t good for me, but today my husband played me about a 3 minute video of Mr. Limbaugh complaining that children expect to be fed during the summer.
I kid you not. The man is complaining about feeding needy children.
It seems that Missouri has a pilot program for feeding students during the school year that is working so well and is so needed that they want to expand it to include feeding needy children in some communities during the summer months when the children are not in school. Of course this angered Mr. Limbaugh because expanding this program costs $2 million dollars. After all, that is twice what he is rumored to have paid for the musical talent at his fourth wedding and it will only feed approximately 10,000 children for three months!
During his rant, he said, “School ends and of course how can we expect them to feed themselves in the summer when they haven’t had to for nine months? So this is how it works. They demand to be fed during the summer.” Now, lest you think he is sane and talking about adults “demanding” that children be fed, he continues, “Or their acolytes demand that they be fed during the summer because after all we’ve conditioned them to not feeding themselves. Plus their parents don’t have to take the responsibility of feeding them.” He ended this little 3 minute rant I heard by calling needy children “wanton little waifs and serfs.”
This man is talking about children and saying that we are conditioning them not to feed themselves by providing food for them. He isn’t even talking about High School age children. While remembering the beginning of a breakfast program at his middle school, Limbaugh said this, “I remember when it started. I remember the school making a big announcement over the PA. And I’m not lying to you when I said, ‘What the hell is this? What is this? I eat breakfast at home. What is this?’ How lucky he was that he ate breakfast at home. Not everyone did. Not everyone does. He should be ashamed of himself. He should also be grateful to his parents. Instead, he acts as if he was the one working and paying for that breakfast he ate before he went off to the 7th grade.
He went on to describe the offered breakfast, “It was like a Continental. It was nothing hot. It was rolls and butter and stuff like that. Then he continued complaining, “Then of course it expanded. Now we learn it includes dinner in Memphis and other places during the school year.”
I am continually amazed that he has so many people who believe what he says and act as if every word he speaks is the gospel. I wish this video would go viral and some of the 99% of us would wake up. Unfortunately, there are about 30% of us that continue to think that it’s going to trickle down any day now. Those are the people that continue to listen to him spout his nonsense and he continues to make millions and millions each year because of it. Then he uses his money and media access to rage against poor people.
On the other end of the spectrum is my mother. She organized and runs a backpack program for the children in her community. She just started it this school year and is already dreaming of expanding it to the middle school. She works hard to get donations from places like the Elks Club and the local grocery stores, etc. to pay for the food. Sometimes she buys it herself. She has ten volunteers and together they pack the backpacks each week with enough food to feed the children (and their siblings if they have them) through the weekend. She is worried what they will eat over the winter break and Rush Limbaugh doesn’t want children to eat all summer.
My mother receives a VERY SMALL pension, yet she cares for her community. She puts on a Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner each year at the Elks Club for hundreds of people who have nowhere else to go or not enough money to make a holiday meal for themselves or their families. She has been doing this for four years now. She works all year at her local food bank. She does everything she can to care for the needy around her. This is the example I had. I feel sorry for the people who live with Rush Limbaugh as their example. Oh, did I tell you that my mother also has MS?
Rush Limbaugh is an able bodied, wealthy man who could do so much to help society if he were a kind person, but it is left to people like my Jewish mother to teach us about the spirit of Christmas because even an atheist like me knows that Jesus would have fed the children – and their parents.

Rush Limbaugh “allowing people to bring out their inner asshole since 1984″
You know what makes me really sad? That people who might not have had the courage to say these horrific things load up Rush’s reasons and arguments in their head and say them using his “voice”. If you had a relative who said these things to you what would you do? Would you argue with them? Do you have all the counter arguments loaded into your head? Most people don’t. Most people don’t have cruel comments at their tongue tips. Rush listeners do. Lots of people don’t like to have those kind of discussions where one side is baiting the other with strawmen. Rush (and Hannity) listeners do.
It is a testament to rhetorical talents of Rush that so many of the things he says get repeated, but it is also a function of the structure of his show that he has no one every calling him out for his cruel comments and lies. On the other end is Hannity who will “win’ the conversation at all costs including using weak opponents and cutting off the mics of people who make good points.
The division in this country has been driven by people like Rush and Newt, all in the service of “ratings” and ultimately money.
This was one of the reasons that I focused on costing right wing radio and TV hosts money. The campaign to get Beck off the air focused on convincing the advertisers that Beck was bad for their brand. Beck is off tv now because of this strategy.
If the people on the establishment left really wanted to, they could stop Rush, but they don’t really want to. There have been multiple opportunities to get Rush off the air, using his own vices and hubris as the catalyst. But there are a lot of powerful people who will prop him up and cover for him because he makes them money and serves their agenda.
If Rush had been caught with his pants down in a brothel in the DR having sex with an underage child could that have been talked away? Guess what? It already might have been, but we will never know since nobody on the left with money took his power seriously. If I had a private eye follow him on his sex tourism vacation to the DR I could have that video.
Rush’s power is not only to be a king maker, but also to set the national agenda in discussions. Which other media personality has Senators and congressmen apologizing to him?
The insiders know just how twisted Rush’s life really is, but they have no incentive to reveal it, only fear. Think about all the people who covered for Jerry Sandusky. Now think about who covered for Rush during his drug problems and sex tourism. You would think that adults would want to protect children from sexual predators, but what if that predator went to another country where the age of consent is lower? What about the whole issue of being a sex tourist in the first place? These are issues that needed to come up in the discussion about Rush.
We cut our entertainers a lot of slack if they are repentant and say they won’t do the horrible things again (see Michael Vick). But what if the entertainers aren’t repentant and keep doing the horrible things? What if Vick kept dog fighting?
For all we know Rush is still getting drugs and might still be engaging in sex tourism. But since nobody is focusing on him using legal means he will keep getting away with it.
Shrug. I don’t listen to Limbaugh (except for a brief period while carpooling with someone who always turned on his show), but are you aware he donated millions to the children of Marines and law-enforcement officers killed in the line of duty? That he holds an annual fundraising telethon called the “EIB Cure-a-Thon” for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and his personal donations are in the hundreds of thousands?
I don’t like the guy, either, but calling him a “Grinch” is absurd.
He spreads poison against women every day and how he managed to have multiple marriages is beyond me. He’s like an open sewer spewing everywhere. IF he does those good things you mentioned, why does he repeatedly spread hate?
“IF he does those good things”
IF you doubt it and IF you think I’ve lied then maybe you should check it out, IF you care.
As for the rest, that’s part of why “I don’t like the guy”.
I didn’t say that you were lying. I just wonder about these people, especially in politics, who inflate what they do and brag a lot. Wasn’t insulting you.
Ya know what, ironymeter, I DO doubt it, and since YOU brought it up, why don’t YOU prove YOUR words?
I’ll wait.
Actually, golconda2, the author brought it up when she said, “Rush Limbaugh is an able bodied, wealthy man who could do so much to help society”.
I’m curious, do you actually have any reason to doubt me, other than I said something you didn’t like hearing?
Anyway, go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rush_Limbaugh and search the page for “Charitable work”
I doubted it too, so I looked it up. I looked it up at
wikipedia as was suggested and this is what I found. Mr. Limbaugh makes $37 million dollars a year from Clear Channel alone. That does not include any speaking fees or other income. I will quote from Wikipedia here about his contributions.
“According to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society annual reports, Limbaugh personally contributed between $100,000 and $499,999 from 2000–2005 and 2007,[71] and Limbaugh claims to have contributed around $250,000 in 2003, 2004 and 2005.[72] NewsMax reported Limbaugh donated $250,000 in 2006,[73] and the Society’s 2006 annual report placed him in the $500,000 to $999,999 category.[71] Limbaugh donated $320,000 during the 2007 Cure-a-Thon[74] which the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society reported had raised $3.1 million.[75] On his radio program April 18, 2008, Limbaugh claimed to pledge $400,000 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society after being challenged by two listeners to increase his initial pledge of $300,000.”
If you just add up what he donated himself over an 8 year period (2000 through 2007) giving him the highest amount possibly paid, he donated $3,069,998 to this one charity.
During an eight year period from Clear Channel alone, Mr. Limbaugh will make $296,000,000. According to Wikipedia, “Limbaugh conducts an annual drive to help the Marine Corps–Law Enforcement Foundation collect contributions to provide scholarships for children of Marines and law enforcement officers/agents who have died in the line of duty.[78][79] The foundation was the beneficiary of a record $2.1 million eBay auction in October 2007 after Limbaugh listed for sale a letter critical of him signed by 41 Democratic senators and pledged to match the selling price.[80] With the recent founding of his and his wife’s company “Two if by Tea”, they have pledged to donate at least $100,000 to the MC-LEF beginning in June, 2011.[81]”
I’m a little unclear on exactly what that means, but it appears he sold a letter he did not write and gave the money to the charity and pledged to give them another $100,000 in June of this year. If he did match the selling price of the letter as stated above, he would have donated another $2.1 if I read it correctly. So if we add that amount with the previous $3,069,998 it comes to $5,169,998. If we add the $100,000 he pledged in 2011, we have to add another $37 million to his income so I am just going to ignore it completely which benefits Mr. Limbaugh as you will soon see.
Let’s just say that Mr. Limbaugh had no income from speaking fees or other appearances (even though we know that is not true) and just assume his new Clear Channel salary that he has had since 2008 and came with $100,000 signing bonus. That seems fair, don’t you think? We will assume an eight year salary of $296 million and a total charitable contribution of 5,169,998. That is 0.017% of his income. That is less than 2% of his income. I donate 10 percent of my income to charity and I live on Social Security and my pension. I make less than $45,000 a year. I do not give that amount because of any religious belief. It is what I budget because I think it is my responsibility to give back to the world. To be honest, I give more than that but that is what I send out each month to specific charities. I also give donations to charity as gifts for my family. My family loves these donations as they all feel like we have enough while others do not. They each have their favorite charities and I donate to the one they like, not the ones I prefer.
I think at this holiday season to go on a rant about feeding children is grinch-like no matter what he has done for his favorite people the rest of the year. Therefore, I am sticking with my title, although I did consider and even look into what was said to me. With all due respect, I think I had it right.
Rush supports children in the Dominican Republic by going all the way there to fuck them. And, he supplies his own Viagra. So, get off his case, you Commies. (Shorter ironymeter)
Rush is a hate mongering pig. How anyone can claim he is some kind of great philanthropist is beyond me. The man is lower than whale shit and no amount of obfuscation by his apologists will change that simple fact.
It seems Rush values children whose parents fight battles the Right likes – wars and law/order. These kids get private party donations of food. Hey, that’s nice. Continue, please.
But for kids of union workers, public employees, single moms, out-sourced factory workers, returning vets, disabled, foreclosed or just plain outta luck – no dice.
Damned children thinking that they don’t have to work for their food! Newt’s got the solution that Rush’s been looking for:
Newt Gingrich Says Schools Should Fire Janitors, Use Students Instead (VIDEO)
Of course you had the right, and I for one agree. I don’t actually believe Limbaugh has an obligation to give anything, let alone a specific percentage of his income. However, I also feel that if he gave $290 million to charity and survived on (the meager) $5.2 million, it wouldn’t make up for the hatred and ugliness he fosters in the world. Your mom does more good than his tainted $290 million ever could.
Yeah, he is just a great guy, isn’t he? Ask any ditto head, they believe he is some sort of intellectual giant-which says quite a bit about his audience, IMO.
Anyone who needs to have his “charitable contributions” listed on Wikipedia to make himself look like a swell chap is a pretty desperate character.
I can’t even respond to this.
The man makes me sick.
As some have pointed out, above, Rush Limbaugh is highly compensated to be divisive, spread as much *hatred* and *fear* as possible bc it falls under the rubric: united we stand, divided we fall.
Limbaugh is incredibly successful at doing this, but let’s be clear here: the PTB give him a HUGE amount of airwave space to spread his lies, his b.s., his misogynistic, bigoted, nasty hatred. It works well bc people who are fearful are easily misled.
I even hear Rush the echo-chamber from trad-Dem voter friends of mine. It’s very pervasive.
IF Rush really does donate to charity, I have to wonder what that charity actually DOES and how much of the money actually goes towards supporting activities and programs that directly affect the underprivileged. A LOT of charities – esp rightwing ones – end up with the preponderance of the “contributions” going to a very few 1%ers at the top… just like Hannity’s bogus charity that’s meant to “help” returning Vets or whatever. Most of the donations go directly into Hannity’s pocket. Just saying…

Rush is irrelevant. I find it easy to ignore him. I would have gone the entire day without wasting a moment’s thought on him had it not been for this post.
If you read Jon Walker’s thread today, you’ll see that outbursts like that are sending the Neuter campaign right down the toilet.
Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

They are called tax deductions. Just because he picks the best sounding ones, doesn’t mean he isn’t just making money off of giving to them.
Limbaugh looks like he never missed a meal in his life. And as for his claim that he always ate (3 or 4) breakfast(s) at home, well D’UH! His father had a cushy government job with a pension. He was the local county judge in Backwater Flats MO.
I used to listen to L three hours a day, five days a week, years past. But during one of the earlier debates over healthcare funding, he said something like healthcare isn’t a right. When I transposed that I got healthcare is a privilege. That’s when my eyes were opened to what the right believed, and I began to realize that I didn’t agree. No doubt L makes necessary goodwill gestures to appease critics, but the harm in hate he brings to the political processes far outways any good he has done.
Rush wants all the food for himself.
Google “EIB Cure-a-Thon” and see where the predominant sources about it come from. Then recall that John D. Rockefeller used to give dimes to the children on the street because he knew it was good PR. Do not underestimate their cynicism.
Feeding at the government trough, eh?
Thank you to everyone who read this and commented. Thank you for reading it even if you didn’t comment. It’s nice to know there are people of like mind out there. Maybe if enough of us keep writing and talking and protesting, things will change.
