I have no idea what happened, but from the reporting I’ve seen, neither does anyone else. If he adopted a boy as a single man, or was married and split with the wife and kids, who knows. But I never assume I know a story or motive until I know it. Right now we don’t. I’m simply speculating on one possible alternative, however impolite.
Well, golly, Mr. Riehl, I’m sure Mr. Sparkman’s wife and son must really enjoy your coy little efforts to smear their tortured-to-death husband and father:

Gee, how would Dan Riehl like it if we asked, without any evidence to back up our questioning, if Dan Riehl had raped and murdered any little boys? I suspect he wouldn’t like it at all.
But of course, this isn’t the first time Riehl’s been deeply amoral and stupid in public. It isn’t even the first time this month. That’s just par for the course with him.

Mr Sparkman was stripped down and bound and hung because that’s a lynching. He had “fed” scrawled on his chest to scare off other feds…jeeze.

A lot of people are quick to point the finger at Meth labs or Pot growers but I seriously doubt that even a stupid criminal would be dumb enough to draw that level of scrutiny to their operation because Sparkman might have seen something they didn’t want him to see. If they whacked him, I doubt that they would have left him tied up like a hunting trophy either.

If it is true that his census id was duct-taped to his ear or cheek, then that pretty much settles it.

Please think before you post. The Government has as much as admitted he was killed. You don’t bring the FBI into a suicide case. You don’t tell the Census Bureau to suspend activities in the area for a suicide.
And the fact that the killers are still out there will impede recruitment of Census workers…NOT catching them. If they catch them people might think…the killers are caught and wannabees will be dissuaded at the penalties they face…probably several capital counts that could result in the Death Penalty (murder of a Federal Employee, terrorism, and several more).
This guy Riehl is disgusting, and shame on Ana[l] Marie Cox for retweeting his post as “something I’m reading tonight” with no condemnation. Shame on her.

Census jobs are not that difficult to obtain…they’re a bit like election workers. The entail training, so attention for detail and literacy, “face work” with people, and long…though intermittent…work days. And an insured, safe, operating vehicle and clean driving record. They don’t require “connections”.
I’m sure there are about a hundred more likely people (teachers and staff in their own county) who would have been targets. A guy who was a teachers aid in a completely different school distrinct? C’mon.
There used to be social, cultural, civic and private organizations that collectively put pressure on idiots to be less idiotic… on ignoramuses to be less ignorant… on bad citizens to be better citizens…
I’m not aware that any of those organizations exist (or exist with any power or influence) anymore… and so we have a segment of the population that believes (as Colbert would put it) whatever their “gut” tells them is true… and there is nobody to shame them or boycott them or send them to bed without supper. In fact, today’s media flatters and indulges them (it’s easier to maintain a profit margin that way).
Is there a solution? Can we just snap our fingers and improve the civic and intellectual perspective and honesty of millions of people? I’m not aware that that’s possible. And so I remain pessimistic for our little Republic…

I do not know the detailed history of lynching, but there certainly is an overtone of sexual violence in the act. Many of the black men lynched were accused of raping white women. Homosexuality (and its perceived link to pedophilia) is the new miscegenation.
This feels like it is linked to racism to me.

He started with an ambiguous statement made by the victim’s mother (who lives many miles away and has no idea what happened), spun it, and added speculation that “guided” him to a totally baseless (and very sick) accusation. Then he slowly defecated this jewel out onto the world by means of a computer. Priceless.
I can understand your wanting to be sure that I wasn’t cherry-picking and ripping the guy’s words out of context. It’s such a hideous thing, and it’s unbelievable that anyone who wasn’t a full-blown sociopath would come up with it. But, as you found, it was Riehl himself who was ripping words out of context — namely, the victim’s mom’s words — to justify his smear effort.

Well if we consider all the possibilities, after all. Maybe. I don’t think he can demonstrate his whereabouts for all those possible and actual crimes. And to select this one possibility for Sparkman, when there are about 1 billion other…more likely scenarios…suggests a bit of an obsession with child sexual abuse. It’s much like Rush Limbaugh and his “thing” with homosexuality and anal sex. That their brains lock into such patterns of thought indicates they dwell on these things repeatedly, which fortifies those neural pathways. Repulsion becomes obsession becomes compulsion.
