Dog bites man. Sun rises in east. Tim Pawlenty plays "kick the starving poor person (who’s probably black anyway) to win the CPAC vote":
Appearing on Fox News’s "On the Record with Greta Van Sustren" last night, Pawlenty said the federal law that mandates ER treatment should be repealed.
"Well, for one thing you could do is change the federal law so that not every ER is required to treat everybody who comes in the door, even if they have a minor condition," Pawlenty said. "They should be — if you have a minor condition, instead of being at the really expensive ER, you should be at the primary care clinic."
Supporters of the federal law would contend that many people go to ERs precisely because they do not have the insurance to pay for a primary care physician.
As usual, my absentee governor, in his bid to win the votes of the evil heartless racist yahoos known as "Republican base voters", goes the extra mile in terms in venality, stupidity, ignorance and inhumanity.
That Federal law that Governor Gutshot complains about? It already allows emergency rooms to turn away persons with non-emergency health conditions (h/t mcjoan). But he either doesn’t know, or doesn’t care — or quite possibly both — which is funny as hell as he used to run a law practice with his former good buddy Eric Magnuson, who he appointed as Chief Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court two years ago. (I say "former" because Chief Justic Magnuson has himself become disenchanted with his former law partner’s fiscally-hostile attitude towards Minnesota’s justice system.)
If the 2012 Republican presidential primary can be described as a race to the bottom, ethically, morally and intellectually, then Gutshot’s working hard to stake out the Challenger Deep.

Here in CA, a lot of low cost cash only clinics have sprung up everywhere. It’s nice for people who have no insurance but do have a job to be able to at least get in to see someone, but it doesn’t take care of everything and everyone. If guys like Pawlenty were serious, they’d fight to subsidize places like that so we wouldn’t have people waiting until they are in the emergency room even if they can’t stomach single payer.
This is all about his presidential aspirations. He already was a jerk, but when he decided he wanted to be president or at least Veep three years ago (which was right after he eked out a narrow re-election win over Mike Hatch), he stopped even pretending he cared about the state.
PW, thanks for your diary. Pawlenty is beyond evil.
He is. He really is.
Thanks PW. Rec’d.
Wow, that’s sick.
It’s sick, callous, and ignorant.
At least he doesn’t pretend to be Christian. He’s just a straight up asshole.
Pawlenty always invokes fundamentalist bible-thumping, but it’s low-keyed compared to the charismatic fundamentalism of the South. In fact, at CPAC he made a point of stressing right out of the chute that America was a Christian nation and laws come from God.
Why is it that assholes often seek the support of God? God must be really tired.
Worse yet, why is it that they keep blowing off whole chunks of the New Testament when they do so?
Yeah. but the eye for an eye thing, if properly misinterpreted, is so much more fun.
It’s the sermon on the mount that stops them.
Stops ‘em every time.
They’re all really enamored of the “God wants us to be rich” meme.
In their version of the Bible those that are rich are favored by God. Everyone else that isn’t so favored which is also God’s will. They don’t have to help others because that is God’s decision. Short, neat, simple.
Of course if we had single payer then Pawlenty would have his mechanism for guiding people way from ERs and back to primary care physicians. Perhaps this is his pitch to fix the misapplication of emergency care by making primary care universally available. Sure.
Beat me to it, Puppethead. He was brought up a Catholic, but converted to evangelical Baptism when he married Mary.
Thanks PW. Almost comforting to know there are governors other than ours (TX) that are assh*les.
Don´t worry this guy won´t be getting elected. His true colors are showing.
Yeah. He wants all the marbles, but he’ll be lucky to get the VP job — especially since he was already rejected for the running mate slot by the guy he thought was his bestest fwend evah, John McCain. I mean, how pathetic do you have to be to lose out to Sarah Palin on a gig like that?
Pawlenty must have believed in Rep Grayson’s interpretation of the “GOP Healthcare Plan” Don’t get sick or DIE QUICK! By eliminating uninsured individuals with access to an emergency room for treatment, Dying Quick would certainly occur!
What mcjoan overlooked, however, is that it’s practically impossible to determine if something’s a non-emergency condition until the person has already been registered, triaged, and examined. Got a headache? Could be sinuses… could be a stroke. Heartburn? Acid reflux or aortic dissection. Stubbed your toe? Could have caught necrotizing fascitis.
Speaking as someone who works in an ER, *everyone* gets in. If their problem is trivial it may not be resolved, but it’s only after thousands of dollars of medical supplies and tests that we know it’s non-emergency.
Thank you, MarciKiser!
Reality based perspective is worth its weight in gold.
Ignorance is cheap … and worth nothing.
Knowledge involves effort AND cost, but then, it has actual value.

A potential presidential candidate with delusions of adequacy…
If the Republican base came out in favor of sombreros, he would be doing the hat-dance at every opportunity.
