It happens like clockwork: Another election cycle, another bill aimed at creating a ballot measure using fear of gayness to herd “values voters” into the voting booth and the Republican fold, another scene of panicked Democrats fearing to take a stand for gays because it might drive some socially conservative voters into the arms of the GOP.
But something funny happened to the clockwork this time out, at least in Minnesota — the Democrats are refusing to panic. Instead, led by our new governor, Mark Dayton — who is turning out to possess more calmly-controlled fire in the belly than anyone dreamed possible — they’re standing with the GLBT community, and for marriage equality.
And when I say “fight”, I mean fight. The local Democrats are going after this not just as yet another GOP-designed distraction from the Republican-controlled legislature’s failure to come up with meaningful jobs bills (one of the Republican Party of Minnesota’s key issues last fall), but also taking on the “morality” question itself: Instead of allowing the social conservatives to have the morality playing field all to themselves, the Democratic-Farmer-Labor folks are questioning a “morality” that, under the pretext of respecting religious-based versions of morality, sends the government snooping into our bedrooms and legislating against the actions of consenting, loving adults. Or, as state representative Steve Simon puts it in the video segment above, “How many more gay people does God have to create before we ask ourselves whether or not God actually wants them around?”

Excellent. I always wondered what sort of God would want to deny people of loving relationships. I always wondered what sort of business we think we have in each others private lives and bedrooms. Thank goodness someone has taken a stand that makes sense.
Fortune favors the bold. It’s much better to actually stand and fight on an issue than to back away from it. If you stand and fight, people figure “wow, there must be a good reason for you to back this so strongly”.
WOO HOO! A governor with spine and one that isn’t interested in playing disenfranchisement games.
A-yep. The Republicans thought that because he’s mild-mannered and has wrestled with alcohol in the past, that he’d be a pushover and/or stupid. They thought wrong.
The irony is that as Sally Jo Sorensen points out, the Republicans at the Capitol are pushing this anti-gay bigotry bill even as the folks in Greater Minnesota are turning towards acceptance and diversity.
The Rs need some new issues. Every election they trot out the same old things – gays, abortion, and I imagine at some point they’ll get around to guns as well.
A Dem with a Spine Cool if he wins he can give Obama and the blue Dogs a picture of what to do to keep their jobs.
The GOP reaction is troubling they are anti Gay because they need scapegoats to divide us from focusing on the economy.
The thing is the economy is the biggest issue. Gays getting married does not trump honey I think we are going to short the rent this month.
a Dem that actually acts like a Dem?
are pigs flying?
did I just see and hear that?
maybe it’s just the exception that proves the rule. either way, damn proud.
we’re all G’s children. doesn’t matter if you are black, white, or green. doesn’t matter if you are D, or R, or other.
JC’s message was about community, compassion, empathy. all of us are brothers and sisters.
I think when ANYONE goes after them, we all need to be “gay”. when they attack, then I am “gay”. either for a moment. or a day. or however long. as long as they attack, stand up and say “I’m gay”. they may go after the group that seems like easy pickings. well let’s see how they like going after all of us. not see easy when it’s all of us, instead of a small group.
“I’m gay”, that’s all we should say.
Oh, they pushed for and got concealed-carry here a few years ago, a decision which was examined by the public last year after a Republican legislator went to make a booty-cum-stalking-call whilst armed:
Undaunted, Hackbarth a few months later introduced a gun rights bill which is currently languishing in committee.
Hackbarth said he was searching for a woman he met on an online dating website who he thought was with another man.
He wanted to sleep with a guy or was he so angry he was spending time talking with a guy (understandable but not sane given his anti gay leanings) he brought his gun along to do what?
Nobody brings a gun along on a first date unless their partner is in the NRA.
Cripes and I thought I had done stupid things on a first date:) This tops everything in my teen stupid years memories I’d rather forgot heck he gots all my friends beat for stupid.
He gots Christine I went at midnight to a picnic with Satanists on a bloody alter and I was not drunk, high but I’m still a virgin beat in Cred.
Personally, I can’t understand why anyone would want to get married.
Hackbarth said he was searching for a woman he met on an online dating website who he thought was with another man.
To lead an anti gay law you need to find a man or woman who is happily married and not checking out women or men on online dating sites. Just who is vetting GOP candidates these days?
I can’t believe Hackbarth is the best GOPer for the job in the whole State Legislature.
Does he at least have good hair look at Ryan good hair and suddenly he was made the GOP point man on the budget over the heads of several GOPers with more knowledge, experience and clout.
Ryan is a media created sensation much like Sarah just not as effective is Hackbarth an even less effective media created sensation than Ryan?
A Democratic governor with a spine -hear, hear!!!
What a wonderfully magnificent and beautiful statement!
Gee,there’s finally a Democrat I can respect.
Thanks be to God!
Blessings

He doesn’t actually have a spine, he’s giving the Vikings a stadium with taxpayer’s money.
Googling for Tom Hackbarth’s picture gives you this:

Sorry read that as he thought she was a man my bad.
Marriage is in tatters enough without making it completely meaningless by allowing same-sex marriage.
