Republicans and other elite representatives of the One-Percenters running this country know that the facts are against them, in everything from economic dealings to the criminal-justice system to the environment. So, when confronted by the facts, they do everything they can to draw attention away from themselves, preferably through the use of inflammatory statements intended to bog people down in defending against them.
It’s yet another misdirection play, part of the Wall Street counterinsurgency plan, just like the Cost to the Taxpayer and the Stinky Noisy Rowdiness gambits. They want oh so badly to make this about the protesters and not the message, and to be about the smears the one-percenters create as opposed to the methods and motives and actions of the one-percenters themselves. “Pay no attention to that oligarch behind the curtain!” is their cry.
Now comes the latest and most vile smear of all. The Wall Street hedge fund financed ECI Republicans and conservatives like William Kristol and Gary Bauer who are currently screaming “anti-semites!” now (in the face of all the evidence to the contrary) are the same ones who backed the Iraq invasion and did their damndest to paint Iraq war opponents as anti-semites in order to keep the public from pulling back the curtain on the phony WMD claims and other nonsense used to justify the invasion of a nation, their slaughter of its peoples, and their plans to profit from it all.
One of the things that gives these conservatives’ and Republicans’ game away is their odd blindness to all other forms of bigotry. They flatly refuse to admit what even Michael Steele was compelled to admit — the decades-long use of the Southern Strategy, the Republican fanning of race-hatred flames as a way to get and hold white votes. Professional Christian (in the Twain sense) John Mark Reynolds has been assiduously broadcasting the ECI-backed smears against Occupy Wall Street, yet is also on record as saying that conservatives and Republicans don’t regularly use racism and bigotry for electoral gain, a classic case of hollering about the hypothetical mote in a neighbor’s eye whilst ignoring the two-by-four sticking out of one’s own.
Will the elites who among other things brought us the Iraq catastrophe get away with their similarly-dodgy attacks on Occupy Wall Street? Not if we continue to turn the focus away from the one-percenters’ trumped-up smears and back where it belongs: on the one-percenters’ actions.

Excellent points.
Of course, if the police were non-violent; if they arrested only those whom they had observed actually to have committed offenses; and were they out in only the numbers necessary to keep the peace, the cost to taxpayers would be far less.
How Low can you go? What amazing companions you describe.
Indeed!
Now that professional prostitute Uncle Tom Michael Steele got the high hard one from the Rethugs (we knew it was coming), maybe he can be bought (gee, ya think?) to become a representative of OWS.
I knew he was doomed the moment he dared to say the Southern Strategy didn’t go away when Nixon took his last Marine One ride in August of 1974. The nonsense about his high-spending ways was nonsense: The dough he blew probably amounted to less than was spent on the last ALEC get-together in New Orleans.
During his time as Lieutenant Governor, he chaired the Minority Business Enterprise taskforce, actively promoting an expansion of affirmative action in the corporate world.[3]
Their slurs aren’t going to work. The occupy movement grows stronger each day. Just read a poll that shows 1/3 of americans support the occupy movement. I expect this will grow also.
You and me. That Grande Faux Pas (there were many) was the nail in his Gooper Coffin.
To paraphrase Samuel Johnson, anti-anti-semitism is the last refuge of scoundrels.
We should be prepared for what is yet to come. What is being done now is nothing to what they will do and what they have done. We only need look at the history of the labor movement in this country to see what the 1% and their dupes are capable of: murder, blackmail, strike breaking, and much, much worse. We ain’t seen nothing yet!
I suppose I am just being paranoid…
But I keep expecting the Tea Baggers to start a counter protest and start direct confrontations with the Occupy movement.
Hi PW. Excellent analysis.
I came across an article today
Wall Street Firms Spy on Protesters In Tax-Funded Center
Sunday 23 October 2011
by: Pam Martens, CounterPunch | Report
Wall Street’s audacity to corrupt knows no bounds and the cooptation of government by the 1 per cent knows no limits. How else to explain $150 million of taxpayer money going to equip a government facility in lower Manhattan where Wall Street firms, serially charged with corruption, get to sit alongside the New York Police Department and spy on law abiding citizens.

I wonder if they have video on the park? I think we need to call and find out.
Here’s why. When violence breaks out because of some agent provocateur they will probably have footage and they also probably have been tracking this person. They will know if they are an undercover cop or an anarchist.
This information should be made available to the media as soon as possible, I wonder if we can demand the footage?
Afterall it is a tax payer funded operation and they are trying to find out the perp. If they find out the perp and it turns out it is a cop do they just remind silent? they sure would tell the world if it was a terrorist, right?
So we should use the tools they set up to protect them against them.
our super-rich elites and their bought-and-paid-for governmental puppets (one and the same in michael bloomberg’s case) will stop at nothing to maintain their twisted status quo…
one of the most solid appraisals on ows i’ve heard yet comes from harvard businessman david intrator… worth watching…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=H3bhHYQ7i7w#!
what mr. intrator spells out should scare the ever-loving shit out of our super-rich elites because it exposes the very hypocrisies and lies that have been painstakingly built to lead us to the current worldwide rape and pillage by the corporatocracy…
http://takeitpersonally.blogspot.com/
The 1%er pieces of shit haven’t seen anything yet. I can’t predict how far the 99%ers will go, but there’s nothing in my mind that the 1%ers can do to gain eventual success in crushing us. There will be war in the streets if they continue to try to retain power. We forgot how to be Americans for a while, but now we can look forward to when we win.
That Kol Nidre service was particulary moving to me. I was bawling my eyes out watching it.
Jews for OWS unite!
And Muslims!
And Christians!
And Buddhists!
And Atheists!
And Wiccans!
And Hindus!
Surtt,
I do not think you are being paranoid, just a good predictor here.
As richwa said in the comment just above yours, “we ain’t seen nothing yet…”
I taught labor history in H.S. classes and the rich pull out all the stops to keep the peasants down.
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire was an eyeopener for the masses at the time and it changed things for a long while.
Stomping on the union movement is just part of their plan.
…like William Kristol and Gary Bauer who are currently screaming “anti-semites!”
Aloha, PW…! Not just in LA, also in the Big Apple, and, even on Yom Kippur…! ;-)
Aloha, gw…! Whatcha drinking…? *g*
*sigh* Not the Baha’is…? ;-)
We do embrace 5 of those 7 faiths ya listed…! *g*
STOP This OPPRE$$ION of US 99%! Return to the Eisenhower years’ 90%
Marginal TAX on the $WELL$!! 99 ~ 90 OR FIGHT!!!
Superb clip. I’m glad he’s using his branding skills to brand ows as people wanting law and order. I love how he said, “Come join us.” He invites others in the middle class to join the movement. He makes it look like it’s the place for reasonable people to be. Which, of course, it is.
I never heard of him before and I’m very glad he’s on our side.
Drink of the day today is a root beer float. I’ve already had one and could easily enjoy another. Top of the day to you and yours.
I’ll try to remember to include them in the next iteration of my anti anti-semitic off the cuff rant. I meant no harm. :)
Now some of them have nuclear power plants that are old and not properly regulated. They have sway over our government shills that have their hand on the nuclear football and military for Pete’s sake! Many, if not all, of the top micro fraction have refuge in far away places. I worry that they will take us all out as they leave the country if they see that they can’t win here.
Tell me I’m wrong. Please!
I just randomly clicked on one of the Facebook pictures to the right of the post. The man has listed under Sports: Favorite Teams: Occupy Wall St.
Just great!
It’s time to think positively instead of constantly fearing the “they win” scenario.
They are 1%
We are 99%.
They know damn well who will win this.
It isn’t them. That’s why they are trying to discredit the movement.
They’re past ignoring and laughing at us. Now they’re fighting.
Then, we win.
As I see it, thinking positively leads to making an actual effort to be prepared to deal with shit that could possibly fly our way. Positive thinking unclouded by blinding and paralyzing fear may be a good place to start, but I haven’t actually made shit DO anything with just my mind.,, not that I’ve know of anyway. It usually takes my total Sushumna for that.
Namaste : )
at age 51, I’ve seen that ‘think positive’ thing used mostly by people who can AFFORD to deal with life’s shocks, cuz granny bought them a house or pays the medical or gives them the 3 year old accord or pays the student loans … or 2 or more of all of the above.
funny how being prepared and thinking of strategies OTHER than humming kumbaya aren’t “positive” –
for those of us with NO ONE on our side, or, only a few with as little as we ourselves have, happy talk is great for 4 year olds and it is fucking more annoying the older someone is from 4. grow the fuck up – is that “positive” for ya? ;)

John Mark Reynolds? Never heard of him until this article. Who cares what he thinks?
Where I come from, insulting people you’ve been robbing is considered a very dumb thing to do. As far as Im concerned, every insult is just fanning the fire. I hope they fan the well deserved rage into a pounding wall of people demanding change on every level. I’m sure you’ve all seen that contemptuous “monkey” man. If that doesn’t make you want to paint a sign and stand in the rain, I don’t know what would.
I see our sold out Government is backing BofA’s 75 billion dollar toxic assets while the elite are whining about having to pay Social security to people that paid into it.. When can we stop holding up these losers that are running us into the ground??
I think we have to get this straight. OWS cannot support Obama or any of the Repulican Kubuki villains they’ve put up to make people think Obama is the best choice. He serves the Republican agenda as Do the other paid off Dems. All taking Wall Street’s money and and their orders on how to run this country.
We cannot support any of these candidates that are in the international elite’s pocket and have any kind of winning outcome from OWS. WE must put up a candidate,, if for no other reason than to prove we can. Oh yes, oh yes, WE CAN.
well one thing for sure, we have to believe we can oust Wall Street from running our government. Otherwise, we are all gonna be nothing but low paid workers and disenfranchised from health care organ donors.
I think a lot of the tea baggers know their movement was co opted and have moved on. I really think they have dissolved to a large extent. Here’s hoping.
And Zoroastrians. :D
That tactic could backfire for them if the Occupy movement continues to gain the support of the American public. See how utterly flat the 53% movement has fallen.
Yes, don’t worry, it was the same during the Vietnam years when the protests first began, the same kinds of slurs, misrepresentations, and hostility, why we were worse than the devil, dirty hippie commies! But as the protests grew and drew more attention the majority of Americans came over to the anti-war side and then public opinion was more like oh the courageous kids fighting for justice and the American Way. Then grannies and housewives were in the streets and it was all over for the warmongers for a little while.
It is gratifying to see the government’s dilemma. They would love to use violence against the protestors but they have an image to protect as public servants LOL and it’s election time too. They just finished castigating and then killing Khadafy and ousting Mubarak based on an outraged sense of injustice at the violence they used against their own citizens. So it’s kind of hard to take the high moral ground and do the same thing here. But they are masters of forgetting what they said yesterday, so as the protests become ever more effective look out for a reaction that will include violence, but it’s violence that will be their undoing.
The Tea Party has no interest in stomping on any anti-status quo movement, the real Tea Party members have much more in common with Occupy than you realize. You must be are listening to Rachael Maddow, Mr. Ed and O’Donnell who specialize in hate speech toward the Tea Party. The violence will come from where it always comes from, the police, maybe even the military if things get scary enough from the government’s standpoint.
Even the Pope is for OWS. I’m sure the 1% is having a problem with that one!
The Democratic Party is just as much a part of the 1%. The only difference between them and the Republicans is that the Democrats are not quite so blatant about it.
I merely note that thinking positively is a starting point. Focusing on how shitty things are instead of how you want them to be, reinforces the present circumstances.
To think is to create.
And FYI I am a disabled person barely surviving month to month on a tiny pension. My parents were working class people who worked until they died. Unfortunately neither left anything but unpaid bills.
But I refuse to give any further intention or power to these people by remaining pre-occupied with how the world sucks. Instead, I prefer to concentrate my mental energies to the world I want. To do what I can to make it happen, I have made many adjustments in my life, from the businesses I support, foods I eat, medicines I take, I have gotten rid of my TV and with it the constant barrage of endless advertising and propaganda. I try to see the good in others and always try to help people I meet to shake themselves free of fear.
Each of us has it within ourselves to help to make the world a better place, often by just adjusting our attitudes. Having a brighter outlook makes us act in a lighter, loving way.
