When I checked my e-mail this afternoon, I saw this:
Kayvan Sabehgi, who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, is in intensive care with a lacerated spleen after being beaten by police close to the Occupy Oakland camp.
Sabehgi, 32, is the second Iraq war veteran to be hospitalised following involvement in Oakland protests. Another protester, Scott Olsen, suffered a fractured skull on 25 October.
From his hospital bed, Sabehgi told the UK’s Guardian newspaper he had been walking alone along 14th Street in central Oakland, and not in the area where most clashes were happening, when he was attacked by a group of cops in front of him. They told him to move, even though there was no place to where he could move; then, as he asked one of them “Why are you doing this?” another one came up and hit him in his arm and legs and back with his baton, after which he was gang-tackled, arrested, and thrown into a jail where he spent the night curled up on the floor of his cell in horrific vomit-inducing pain, without any medical treatment until after bail was made for him late Thursday afternoon and he still couldn’t stand up, much less walk out of his filthy cell.
I then turned on CBS News to see if they’d have anything on this poor gentleman. No, they did not. Instead, they had a story on how the “black bloc” crowd was trying to “hijack” the protests.
I then checked the front pages of Google and Yahoo. Nothing on Google, and a link to this story from the British news agency Reuters with the link header making it sound like Sabeghi was somehow at fault. (See the screen shots above for proof.) I checked Google News and found (as the third accompanying screen shot shows) that the cites were composed of the Guardian article, the Reuters article, an Al Jazeera story and a Russia Today story, and local Bay Area TV news source KGO:
Not a single major American media source with a nationwide focus and a large viewership or listenership could be bothered to stop their preoccupation with broken windows to care about a man’s broken body — much less to notice that he was the second Iraq war vet to be injured nearly to death by the Oakland cops, and but one of dozens of innocents who got shot with rubber bullets, beaten, gassed, and flash-banged, often apparently as they were trying to stop the black-bloc types.
Hey, US mainstream media! If you wonder why we don’t trust you, now you know.
(UPDATE: Oh, this really takes the cake. According to Greg Mitchell at The Nation, it was The Guardian, a UK paper, that broke the Sabeghi story. I understand this to mean that they even beat out the local Bay Area media, and from what I’ve seen of the timestamps, I think he’s right. If he is, that shows that the US “mainstream” media is even more pathetically bad and compromised than I thought.)
(UPDATE 2: Turns out that one Bay Area TV station had the story before anyone else, beating the Guardian by three hours. Still, the Guardian beat every American nationally-oriented newspaper, as well as every American national-reach radio or TV news network. That says something about American media, and it’s not a good message.)

I am surprised we learned about him at all. The Oakland police continue their murderous/attempted murderous streak.
I would say that timeline is right – I saw it on an Occupy Oakland Facebook page from the Guardian first and then by afternoon the local news had picked it up. But they had very little information – and of course they didn’t exactly ask too many questions after the cops had announced that people had been injured. It wasn’t mentioned in the Oakland City Council meeting Powerpoint of Negativity.
Union members, with a pension. Probably being ripped off by Bank of America like the rest of us. Defending people who are determined to steal that pension, steal the Social Security fund, desroy the unions, etc. etc.
Shit is fucked up.
The puppetmasters choreograph a nice little circular firing squad, don’t they?
Yes, another life threatening injury–medical emergency for a vet:

Coincidental? I don’t know, but I don’t trust this Patriot Act Police State:

Thanks, Carol.
I hope this gets bumped to the FDL homepage.
I have as much withering contempt for the US MSM as I do for all organized religions and the GOP, which is saying a fuck of a lot. You’re better served getting all your news from twitter and Facebook. Really.
The is a compound assault. Sabehgi was left to die in his cell. How badly injured does a person have to be before the jailers take steps to help? Throwing up in your cell and not being able to stand and being left there for hours creates calculated pain and is potentially lethal. Sabehgi is very lucky he is alive.
Another Vet gets attacked by the police and its not news in the American MSM?
Do we need anymore proof that Banks own the media? The GOP is the party of the Banks. Where is the Tea Bagger we love our troops outrage?
Where are all the tv talking heads they should be asking will America’s Vets now openly side with OWS and will this mean rebellion in America?
The MSM talking heads were talking about rebellion when the Tea Baggers first came out.
“Another Vet gets attacked by the police and its not news in the American MSM?”
Of course. Meanwhile, a Tea Partier might get a small bruise obtained while shoving around a non-Tea-Partier and he’s made into a martyr.
Car crashes into OWSers twice cops let them go to Vets attacked by police I’m starting to see a pattern here. Just how long can the GOP Presidential candidates claim to support the troops how long can the Media claim to support the troops and not pretend to be owned by the banks?
How long can the police claim they are protecting society by sending in plants but not getting rid of people the protesters want gone because they cause trouble. Granted many of the people causing trouble I suspect are police.
I don’t recall immigration rights or tea bagger protests where the police attacked vets and I don’t recall the police ever letting anyone who ran someone over go without a ticket in real life or a protest of any kind.
What are the statistical odds 2 attacks by police on Vets at a protest and 2 examples of police being real nice and letting people who run people over go?
This sounds like they are targeting Vets for police beatings and OWSers with car accidents.

Funny how the police are only attacking Vets bad enough to put them in the hospital. The odds of this happening randomly well either the police are targeting Vets or Vets make up a much bigger percent of OWS than the regular population.
Lets assume the police are not that evil.
That means that Vets are having more problems finding jobs and keeping their homes than regular people I think Vet homeless numbers can prove that.
But it also means that Vets are blaming WallStreet for their problems…and the banks should fear a large number of Vets with combat training from 10 years of war blaming them why they can’t find jobs and are homeless.
I expect the banks will call for gun control laws soon in the name of stopping terrorist of course.
When will we boycott the corporate “news” programs? Those of you still watching speak up. What is your excuse? Have you ever asked yourself – why am I watching Fascist propaganda? If you can move your money why not your eye balls? Why does a progressive blog feature “Sunday Talking Heads”? Where is the push back against corporate media? I don’t see any.
Has it ever occurred to you that you have to know what the propaganda messaging is, in order to counter it?
And did you even bother to read the many FP articles, including the one by Dean Baker that’s up there right now absolutely excoriating the Washington Post for lying about Social Security? Or the frequent ridicule of the MSM?
If you can’t coomprehend that this blog is pushing back against mainstream media messaging, well that’s not FDL’s fault.
“Has it ever occurred to you that you have to know what the propaganda messaging is, in order to counter it?”
Exactly. You have to know what your mom, dad, and your neighbors are being told, and from where.
Most folks in this day and age still get most of their news from two main sources: Drive-time radio (morning and evening commute) and the evening news. That’s just the way it is. The question is, how do we deal with that situation? Not by sticking our heads in the sand.
The blog and it’s independent journalists reporting efforts happens to be “the pushback” against MSM.
There was an excellent interview with another member of Iraq Veterans Against The War last night on Keith Olbermann (David Schuster filling in). She said that unemployment among returning veterans averages 3% higher than national stats, so just add that to your figures for each individual state – and to each demographic.
Secondly, what each of these two brave vets had in common was they were wearing shirts announcing their membership in this organization. (My personal observation)
This woman veteran also pointed out another salient fact.
Veterans are placed (and are volunteering to be placed) at the front of many of these protest marches where they are expected to wind up in confrontations with the police. Why? Because of their military training and experience. They are there for two reasons. First – because they have experience in volatile situations and know HOW TO NOT OVER-REACT. And second, they serve as a very calming influence on the inexperienced and frightened ‘civilian’ protesters.
So it would seem that the police may see these brave young men and women as two things – traitors for their now-peacemaking stances against the wars, and second – in a sort of passive way enabling these protesters and if they can brutalize them they will succeed in driving away all the ‘civilians’.
These police officers who have resorted to this level of brutality against these soldiers are a bunch of chickens**t cowards who don’t deserve to lick the boots of the men and women who have served in the military.
And I have also noticed when they have to engage in any “hand to hand combat” they always attack from the back. As they did with Kayvan Sabehgi, and also with Sgt. Shamar Thomas in NYC along with the group of other veterans he was with. My apologies to chickens everywhere.
Great update and comments PW and FireBaggers.
Ignore the paid trolls, shills and such, I doubt very much that any really SICK people come here, so they are paid for the most part.
Like the Black Bloc is . . .
On we trudge.
Well said.
My chickens would accept your apologies but they’re incapable of thinking outside the ever present pecking order.
They are also capable of turning cannibalistic under confined conditions and will peck the weaker ones to death.
So there’s that.
Dude, if you want to throw Black Bloc smears around, go for it.
Then we can move on to ethnic and gender smears.
Then we can derail our whole fucking Community.
Let’s do this!
Thank you, Phoenix Woman. Very good post.
I forgot my manners for a moment!
I told the Black Bloc youngbloods I would have their back. I told the Iraq Veterans Against The War youngbloods I would have their back. I told the Food Not Bombs youngbloods I would have their back.
I am their Mother.
I hope other Mothers will join me. It’s going to take a shitload of Mothers to counteract the propaganda thats going down.
Washingtonsblog has photos and video of Kayvan Sabehgi and the confrontation; too early here for me to play the video, so I don’t know how much was captured on film.

thanks for sharing phoenix woman. It is important to continue to report the discrepancy and unevenness in corporate media reporting as nothing less than the truth about what they are doing will destroy their credibility.
And it is happening. We can take heart. I use my own self-awareness as a gauge for this. I’ve come a long way in just a year. Although I’ve realized for years that Fox news is nothing more than a mouthpiece for the Republican Party and that CNN follows a close second, until about 9 or 10 months ago I thought that public television and MSNBC were fairly OK. Now I see how they are not. The walls for MSNBC began to crumble for me in the late fall of 2007 when Chuck Todd told Mike Gravel that he couldn’t participate in the presidential debates because he has not raised a million dollars. That really hit me hard as a wake up call–a corporation wielding the power to say who can and cannot participate in the presidential debates. The realization of that just floored me.
They are all propaganda and some of them more obvious than others.
Whereas a year ago I watched most of the MSNBC pundit shows every day spending on average about 15 hours a week. It’s been months now since I’ve bothered to watch any one of their shows and I’ve only looked at part of one Republican “debates”.
I feel confident that there are millions of Americans out there just like me who have taken similar stances. Totally fed up and disgusted. After all, why bother to watch lies? What is the point, unless you want to become their robot?
I smirk at the thought that these jackasses will pay millions for their political ads for which there will be only a tiny audience.

Liz–thanks for saving me the trouble of composing a reply. Apparently we are on a similar timeline, though I must admit I’m usually dragging up the rear in recognizing propaganda. Experience (recognizing and acknowledging past mistakes) shortens the learning curve, doesn’t it?
PROPAGANDA will not ever report it’s opposition. US is now a Fascist country, after the PUKIE JUNTA of 2000. Goebels would be so, so, so proud of this bunch of re-cycled FASCISTS/NAZIS.
I’m with you there. I left the cursed country before the Fascist Junta of 2000.
Sweetie, war against the domestic population is the NORM for a Fascist state, which is what the US indeed has become under CORPORATE $$$$$$$$$$ RULE.
Sure do agree with YOU.
Well, I’m a radical progressive, so my boycott of ‘snooze’/propaganda involved leaving the cursed country.
Here’s a YouTube of that same KTVU video – even though it duplicates what Wendy posted, there are other Youtubes of interest on this page:
