Earlier this month, I noted that CPAC, the premier political event for America’s conservatives, had not one but two white-supremacist dipwads as honored guests and speakers. Today, I’m continuing a Minnesota-focused discussion of political bigotry in action, as practiced by ALEC’s Mary Kiffmeyer, her fellow Republicans and her conservative allies at Minnesota Majority.
Yup, it’s another Minnesota item for the ever-growing “They Say They’re Not Bigots, But” file I keep for Republicans and their conservative allies, and it goes like this:
On Monday morning, TakeAction Minnesota, along with State Representative Rena Moran (65A) held a press conference condemning racially-derogatory imagery being promoted on a pro-photo ID website run by Minnesota Majority. Organizers of the press conference say the online images on WeWantVoterID.com imply that African-Americans and Latinos are looking to cheat Minnesota’s elections system.
Dan McGrath, Executive Director of TakeAction Minnesota, one of the organizations leading the campaign against a photo ID amendment, took aim at the online message. “These images are racial-profiling of voters at its ugliest, designed to drive fear and racial division throughout Minnesota in order to help pass a photo ID amendment at the legislature and on the fall ballot. They’re wrong and they should be removed from public view immediately.”
The online banner depicts images of an African-American male dressed in a black-and-white-striped prison suit, and a person dressed in a blue mariachi costume, alongside other outlandish Halloween characters including a white-sheeted ghost, a ghoulish skeleton and a cartoon superhero. The online banner’s message reads “Voter Fraud: Watch How Easy It Is To Cheat In Minnesota’s Elections.”
State Representative Rena Moran, whose represents a racially-diverse district in St. Paul’s Frogtown, Near North End neighborhoods said she was “sickened” at the images and called the photo ID amendment they are attached to nothing less than a “21st century Jim Crow law.” Moran said she believes “those that seek to fan the flames of racial division and fear hurt Minnesotans who are already hurting too much. These images are nothing more than scare tactics used to make sure people of color are further marginalized from public life.”
A portion of the banner graphic appears at the top of this post. The person wearing the ghostly bedsheet is of course Minnesota Majority visual code for “spook”, meaning “Negro”. Taken with the black dude in prison stripes and the mariachi guy, that makes three racist references of varying subtlety. One could be written off as chance, two could be coincidence, but three? Three?! Hell, ESPN just fired a fellow for making one racist reference — and here we’ve got three crammed into one ad by a group that keeps insisting their motivations aren’t racist.
Somehow, I don’t think a professional ad or website design agency is responsible for this thing. A professional ad agency would have, unless ordered otherwise by their client, made sure to avoid any type of ethnic/racial references — instead of a white-sheeted “spook”, a mariachi guy, and a black guy in prison costume (and the wildcard zombie and the superhero-costumed entity thrown in for giggles), they’d all be trenchcoat-wearing spies along the lines of Mad magazine’s “Spy vs. Spy” cartoons.
But no. This is what MM wanted, this is what they got, and it’s racist dogwhistling to their base.
UPDATE: Bear in mind that the Voter ID proponents have a long history of bigotry and racism. Mary Kiffmeyer, ALEC’s point woman in Minnesota and who is in tight with her political allies at Minnesota Majority, once defended Minnesota Majority’s writings on “racial purity” thus:
The last time Mary Kiffmeyer appeared in the mainstream press, she was defending writings about “racial purity” on the Minnesota Majority website:
Kiffmeyer said the page dealing with health care and its mention of racial purity must be understood in context. That phrase, she said, is simply descriptive.
“That’s a genetic term,” said Kiffmeyer, who is a nurse by training. “It does matter when you are doing medical studies.”
Drew Emmer, the communications director for the organization, said Kiffmeyer is the organization’s executive director and Jeff Davis, who has been active in pushing for a Minnesota anti-gay marriage amendment, is the president. [St Paul Pioneer Press]
Minnesota Majority quickly moved to edit those writings, but here’s the original text — and remember, it’s this text that Kiffmeyer defended:
FACT: The U.S. health care system serves the most diverse racial and ethnic population of any country in the world. This fact adversely affects every statistic by which we are compared to other countries. Black women, for a variety of reasons, are more prone to underweight babies than are Caucasian and Asian women. It is not surprising that Sweden has a lower infant mortality rate, or that Japan has a longer life expectancy than the United States does. They are nearly racially pure: we are not.

Of course: it couldn’t possibly be a reference to the “graveyard vote,” could it? I mean, how absurd to use a ghost to represent the dead… Amusingly, if they had done spies as you suggest you’d still be here telling us that spies are also called spooks, and everyone knows what THAT means.
Truth to tell, the prisoner doesn’t look all that Black to me, either.
I’m not sure what the zombie means but I take the superhero to represent fictional characters.
I noticed that you didn’t bother trying to explain away the mariachi guy.

Isn’t that one obvious: illegal immigrants?
There are lots of Irish immigrants that are undocumented, thousands in New York City alone (not to mention Boston). Try again. (And read my updated comment while you’re at it. MinMaj has a history of this sort of thing.)
She is factually correct, so it says nothing about her alleged “racism” one way or the other. I don’t suppose the Swedish health care system has much of a problem with Sickle-cell anemia, for example.
Of course there are, but statistically what part of the world do most illegal immigrants to the US come from and what is therefore the most reasonable stylized representation?
Zombies and spooks on Fat Tuesday.
Golly gee. How could that have happened.
I agree that the symbolism is rich. I never would have associated the spook with ‘spook’ in the racially derogatory way. I thought maybe KKK? The zombie may be the ‘graveyard vote’, of course (how attuned they to comtemporary cultural memes!).
I don’t think the people who devised these ads are very bright. Except in a very lizard brain way. Which is not to say the ads are ineffective: they definitely are.
Oh, by the way — Minnesota Majority just altered the graphic as a further nose-thumbing to decent folks everywhere.
They don’t realize that a blog with a reach far beyond Minnesota is not only discussing this race-based incident, but a previous one as well.
AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Phoenix Woman:
It’s time to coalesce all grassroots political opposition groups into one big “anti-fascist” front and open the door for participation by various individual Democratic candidates at all levels. I been riddin’ this horse for years around here but it is clear now that the Koch brothers learned from their father and his best bud Henry Ford about how to create a national fascist movement out of the Republican Party.
It’s time we branded the this Republican Party with the fascist lable… I’m tired of waitin’ for any Democrats to do it.
Leave it to a Ron Paul
fanworshipper to defend racism… Pretty much says all that needs to be said about Rondroids. That’s because so-called “Democratic” politicians these days are really Republicans, and it’s not particularly a “secret” anymore.
Agree that citizens need to do the heavy lifting bc it’s clear that no pol is gonna do it for us. They’re either bought off, already part of the 1% & in it for themselves, threatened, or hopeful of getting in on all that sweet sweet payola.
Funny its the GOP who can’t count votes in Iowa and Maine who seem to have problems with election fraud. Florida and Ohio both had problems when they elected Bush but the GOP projects upon us what they do as usual.
How is Minnesota trending in the polls stuff like this might work in a red state but if the news gets attention its sure to back fire.
Context is everything put a ghost in a horror flick its a ghost put a ghost with a mariachi guy in a post about vote fraud and its about race.
Notice nothing about Dem Machine politics and dead people voting.
Statistically immigrants who speak english and are educated are more likely to commit vote fraud one would think I of course would like to see some numbers on vote fraud.
Gore vs Bush Pat Buchanan admitted he probably did not get more votes in a Jewish district than Gore did.
Ohio Bush vs Kerry more vote fraud. Iowa Primary how many whole precients were not counted? Maine similar problems.
Don’t forget the Indiana AG. But that’s the MO: throw their mud on the other. Hence the “Liberal communo-fascist” drumbeat the rot-wing pushed early and often.
Thank you for your snark; do you actually have anything on-topic to say?
Thing is, I think you only see racism because you want to find it.
I see a representation of the various groups Voter ID is intended to keep out of the ballot box:
Felons who have lost the right to vote.
Illegal immigrants.
Non-existent (fictional) people.
Unknown (I still can’t figure the zombie).
Deceased voters.
I hope ironymeter looks at the revised graphic.
Maybe s/he will wonder why the black felon at the head of the line was covered up, and a white (cartoon) felon was added.
Nah, racists are racists…
To say nothing of the fact that a Canadian was used to replace the Mexican.
Ya know, I watch a lotta news (real news, like FOX! OK, alright, doncha know!), and they’re telling me a lotta Canadian socialism is trying to come over here, and they’re doin’ it by using MEXICANS for cover!
Canadians Disguised as Messcans! Or, vice-versa! This is bigger than 9/11!
Actually, I saw it long before it was posted here that there was a revision.
Will I wonder why? Nah, nothing unusual about a bunch of Liberals screeching and wailing over bullshit and (victory!) effecting a bullshit change. That’s how you all achieve “progress.”
As I said, I didn’t see the black felon” that you do. Hell, I still don’t: that face is several shades lighter than our President or my step-daughter, both of whom are of mixed parentage. The eyes and chin are a toss-up, but the mouth, nose, and ears are wrong, too.
Maybe gannonguckert will wonder why the enlightened, unprejudiced types looked at that pic and saw a Black man while I (who everybody just knows is a racist) did not.
Nah, political bigots are political bigots…
I thought that was a sly reference to George Carlin
Ahh, it’s all so clear to me now.
People like to think of Minnesota as a progressive state but that is far from true. Keep in mind that this is the state of Michelle Bachmann. Mary Kiffmeyer served as Secretary of State responsible for voter registration and assisting the election process during “Too Small” Tim Pawlenty’s terms as Governor. She did everything she could then to erect barriers to those who tried to exercise their duty to vote. The voter ID Laws sent out from ALEC are purely an attempt to suppress the vote. Voter fraud in Minnesota virtually does not exist. Some of the examples of voter fraud cited earlier are ludicrous. For example, the votes that showed up for Pat Buchanan in 2000 in Florida were a problem with the voting machines not fraud.
I don’t see a “black felon”, also. Frankly, he reminds me of Curly, from the 3 stooges. I think he was Jewish, certainly not black.
If you want to amuse yourself, you can blow up the face, edit out the prison garb, and then do a survey of people as to what the racial background of Curly the felon is. I’ll bet you dollars to donuts they say Caucasian.
Are you familiar with the JournoList scandal? Crying “racism”, deliberately to smear, is nothing new for some lefties.
“She did everything she could then to erect barriers to those who tried to exercise their duty to vote.”
Like what?
“Voter fraud in Minnesota virtually does not exist.”
You may be right, but how could you know?
“You may be right, but how could you know?”
Silly of me to expect a response from someone with a foot knee-deep in their mouth.
