Isn’t it interesting how the US establishment media, even as it went out of its way to push the Republicans’ distorted talking points on Hilary Rosen’s comments concerning Ann Romney, simultaneously ignored things that might not reflect well on Mrs. Romney or her very wealthy husband — things like the full history of her birthday party host Fred Malek, aka Nixon’s Jew Counter?
And no, Malek was not merely following Nixon’s orders, as Timothy Noah points out:
But here’s what Malek left out. Four of the people on Malek’s Jew list got demoted, with Malek’s active involvement. This is what Malek denied to the Post‘s Woodward and Pincus in 1988 (when Woodward and Pincus identified two of the four but were unable to prove the Malek link). “In no way did I take part in moving anyone out of the BLS,” Malek told Woodward and Pincus. “If I had even been peripherally involved or asked to alter someone’s employment status I would have found it offensive and morally unacceptable, and I would have refused.” Please note this comparatively rare instance in which a Washington hack tells a lie in the subjunctive tense. Malek was more than peripherally involved. And he most certainly did not refuse.
The proof is a memo that was withheld from Woodward and Pincus but was made public many years later. The memo, from Malek to Haldeman, notes the imminent demotions of Harold Goldstein, Peter Henle, Leon Greenberg, and Ben Burdetsky. I have no idea how many of these four were actually Jewish, but all four names appeared on Malek’s Jew list. (Malek’s memo did not mention the 13 by name but a different memo to Malek from White House aide Dan Kingsley did. Shiskin, oddly, didn’t make Malek’s list of 13, even though he was BLS director at the time.)
When you add all these details to Malek’s story, it acquires a very different meaning. Far from subverting Richard Nixon’s anti-Semitism, Malek enabled it. The fact that Malek later helped install the Jewish Shiskin as commissioner of BLS is not particularly relevant because by then Nixon had presumably moved on to other bizarre and/or hateful obsessions. (I’ve checked the unedited tape of Naftali’s Malek interview, and Malek doesn’t mention the demotions there either.)
Kinda like how the establishment press runs to demonize every single brown-skinned guy with a non-Anglo name caught up in an FBI entrapment net, yet gives far less attention (especially national attention) to right-wing terrorists like Kevin Harpham and James Cummings who don’t need the FBI to bait them into attempting violence.

White Mittens ,or Black Mittens ,take your pick
and reccd
What’s sad is that Obama is still better than Romney.
Yes, I know, there is an argument to be made for picking the worst and most right-wing guy possible in the hope that he screws things up so much that the masses rise up in revolt. That was Nader’s gambit in 2000. But too many of the masses aren’t like you and me — they watch FOX and believe what it shows. If they revolt, it likely will be to install a true fascist.
I disagree.
Picking the most right wing guy would mean picking Obama. He and the enabling Dem Party have taken the country right-ward at a more accelerated pace than any administration before. Civil liberties, war, environmental regulations, two-tier system of justice, corporate welfare, coddling the 1% with austerity for everyone else, you name it, Obama and the Dems have set new benchmarks when it comes to oppression and repression for the 1% and love for the 1%.
If Obama is re-elected, he will move even more to the right.
Romney, on the other hand, will be constrained, and restrained by the Dems suddenly eager to paint themselves as different from the opposition.
Make that “oppression and repression for the 99%” in the above sentence.
What you say may be true. I, however, shudder to think of someone like Robert Bork on the SCOTUS. And that is the “small difference’ between electing Romney and re-electing Obama for another 4 years.
Whatever either one of them will or won’t do in the public policy arena – we have Congress to thank for a lot of rotten stuff that we are blaming POTUS for. And Congress to blame for not pushing back on other stuff we are blaming POTUS for as well.
But I look at that frail entity known as Ruth Bader-Ginsberg, and I look at that aging entity known as Steven Breyer, and I look at the past couple of years of horrors to come out of that political disaster of 5-4 crap known as this SCOTUS. I cannot imagine it with a 7-2 majority for the next 40 years thanks to a couple of Romney nominations – and do not forget that Robert Bork himself is Romney’s judicial advisor!
And if you think the Senate would refuse to seat people like that – well we got Roberts and Alito the last time around and look what a couple of lying liars they turned out to be. (Both should be impeached for lying under oath during their confirmation hearings but that is the subject for another day) Wolves in sheeps clothing. The Republicans learned their lessons well with Mr. Bork. And they brought us these two.
So yes, Obama is moving right. I totally agree. And he most likely will continue to do so. But he has so far to go before he even reaches what is now the center divide in politics (not the country – politics) I will take that over a couple of Borks on SCOTUS.
Interesting opinion.
You assume the worst about Romney’s choices and the best about Obama’s choices. I assume the worst about both and foresee Obama’s choices being worse, especially since the Dems will undoubtedly rubber-stamp Obama’s choices and fight against Romney’s.
This doesn’t mean I support Romney, any more than I would support Obama. Merely that I quibble with the conclusion that Romney is the worst evil. I believe, as Glen Ford of BAR said, Obama is the more effective evil.
Personally, I’m supporting third party efforts all down the line.
By the way, James Cummings was a multimillionaire trustafarian who moved to Maine from Texas and was, among other things, trying to buy enough parts to build a dirty bomb:
Can you imagine the furor in the media if Cummings had been, say, a Communist trying to build a dirty bomb? We’d still be hearing about it, two years later.
And yes, if not for his wife Amber and for WikiLeaks, we would never have known even this much.
And here’s something else that won’t make the evening TV news:
What about Jay The Dunce running for Governor in the state of WA. as a Democrat?
“Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jay Inslee said Friday the state doesn’t need new taxes to fulfill its education funding obligations.
By Mike Baker
The Associated Press”
While the headline reinforces the right wing lies about the deficit and spending and taxing the pigs who wrecked the economy – and the article doesn’t have an exact quote from Jay The Dunce, this is normal Jay The Dunce behavior – attempt to steal right wing lies by repeating them … or … repeat right wing lies so you don’t have to do anything beyond kiss right wing ass?
At least the people who are going to believe that lying thief McKenna will get lied to and get ripped off – exactly what they voted for.

Oh please. You’re going to get your panties in a twist because Malek promoted one jewish guy and demoted four others 40 years ago? At Nixon’s repeated request? And then blame the “conservative” media for not making it an issue?
That would be the same conservative media that promoted Trayvon Martin to sainthood, yes? The same conservative media that hides the Fast and Furious scandal? The same conservative media that also promoted a non-existent “war on women”?
Look folks, this is the kind of thing that happens when the echo chamber is all you listen to. It isn’t healthy and leads to manipulation.
It would be more appropriate to say the most ‘authoritarian’ guy.
Well, there you go again. Don’t you see? Obama IS a true fascist, by Mussolini’s definition of fascism as using government power to advance corporate interests. Yes, so is Romney.
There is no appreciable difference. None.
How the “progressive” media helps the right-wing conservative Barack Obama…
by talking about Romney and ignoring Obama’s betrayal of everything “progressive.”
exemplified here…
meh…
no, he’s worse. The GOP is just doing what it’s always done, nothing new there…
Obama is the most audacious political liar in my lifetime.
He’s done more damage to democratic values than any Republican, ever.
bingo!
yawn…
bingo
opposition party
I think that is a crucial liklihood to consider. The very last thing we need are two Borks on the court. Also, the thugs could easily gain control over congress, if not this year, in the near future. Then, whatever bullshit Obama does to the safety net will be nothing compared to the idiot tea party types. And voting for a third party just gives your vote away. We don’t have the kind of electoral system where that could work, even remotely.
But Obama is just a fuck. It may be impossible to pull the lever for him. I will wait to see what he does now.
Really? Well I am pretty sure that is not for lack of trying by the likes of the Kochs, Limbaugh, o hell, you can fill in the blanks.
Really? Well I am pretty sure that is not for lack of trying by the likes of the Kochs, Limbaugh, o hell, you can fill in the blanks. And what about the supremes? Great bunch there.
Personally I find the SCOTUS argument for the Dims amusing. As we’ve seen repeatedly practically every Senator has veto power over Administration nominees or appointees, except when it comes to the Dims. Is anyone really surprised at the type of Justices the Gang of Five turned out to be? And yet the Dims had six opportunities to keep them off the Court. As far as that goes, the only thing I knew for sure about Kagan was that she was a supporter of the Unitary Executive theory.
As for Obama, the zeal he has shown to shred the safety net in favor of protecting the wealthy, which puts him to the right of Otto von Bismark, make his priorities obvious. To paraphrase Eugene Debs, “What is the bigger ‘waste’ of your vote, to vote your convictions, or to vote for someone you disagree with?” There is no lesser of two evils, there is only the evil of two lessers.
Oh Really??? Romney could well unite a leftist push back. Obama will merely diffuse because you can’t criticize the Democrat. What bullshit.
What bullshit indeed.
I won’t vote for Romney, but I’d rather see him win. For one thing, it will take some time for Romney to get his administration together, which buys us more time. Obama’s got everything in place for his second term, and what a nasty four years he has in mind for us. I don’t think we can even imagine how bad it’s going to get if Obama gets a second term.
Romney may have a modicum of morality left in his slimy soul. Obama’s has never had an ounce of morality, as he’s proven by his willingness to murder and lie and steal. Obama’s lured by promises of future wealth. Romney is rich enough already.
Never vote for an incumbent president. Remember how stupid we thought Bush supporters were when they gave Bush a second term? Look in the mirror.
How can anyone–knowing what they know about Obama–cast a vote for him and he/she has a clear conscience?

The “conservative” corporate media are helping both Black Romney and his party as well as White Romney and his party. While doing everything in their power to keep people entertained and diverted. Ensuring that people are not aware of their options. People like Rocky Anderson, Mr Alexander or Roseanne Barr. All good people running for president and who all deserve better than the treatment that they are getting. More importantly we deserve better than this.
The media in this country have proven themselves to be enemies of an informed public. That makes them enemies of democracy itself. Thanks in large part to those loveable wacky liberal guys Bill Clinton and Al Gore (the green washed corporate prostitute- apologies to prostitutes extended) Media manipulation has been my specialty for the past 30 years.
I include the “progressive” liberal media who also refuse to inform their listeners, readers, viewer. The Noam Chomsky five filters of media censorship and Manufactured Consent applies just as much to “progressive” media as it does to the other branches of corporate media control.
Oh yes
In the Bill Clinton and Al Gore (green washed corporate prostitute) annd media complicity, I speak of course of the 1996 Telecommunications Act. Has any of you seen Current TV these days? Al Gore’s own personal TV station? It is shameless Obama and Dem apologists nonsense at its worst. All packaged as “progressive.”
The Golden Microphone Rule. If you have the gold or speak for those who have the gold, you get to have the golden microphone.
good points i never thought of,thank you
