– On Gun Appreciation Weekend, the NRA’s counter-celebration to President Obama’s second inaugural, someone in New Mexico went berserk and killed five people. And not with a crossbow, either.
– Also on Gun Appreciation Weekend, five people at gun shows in three different states (North Carolina, Ohio and Indiana) managed to get shot and injured during the events. I sense future Darwin Award nominees in the making — not so much the victims as those who shot them, as they’re not always one and the same.
– This Bellingham, Washington guy says he always sleeps with a loaded .45 under his pillow, apparently so he can shoot intruders. Don’t know if he’s shot any intruders, but he did kill his girlfriend, apparently accidentally.
– Howie Klein has a deal for us: ‘$100 for anyone who can get Bachmann, Broun, or Gohmert to explain on video why they believe in the “Sandy Hook Hoax.” Or $50 for Stockman’
– Neocon critics of Chuck Hagel claim he tried to shut down an Israeli USO operation. People who were actually involved in the USO operation say that in reality, Hagel helped save that Israeli USO operation.
– Yet another reason to go organic: Modern conventional agriculture kicks out 68% of all US nitrous oxide emissions — and nitrous oxide is 310 times more potent at trapping heat than is carbon dioxide.
– But if you do go organic, stick to farmer’s markets and the locally-owned co-ops and stay away from Whole Foods, whose CEO John Mackey is a mendacious schmuck.
– In other news, Barack Obama was sworn in for a second term as President of the United States, but not before he put some stain on a bookshelf. FLOTUS Michelle and the two First Daughters (the same two adorable little girls the NRA is not-so-subtly threatening) also did some volunteer work before attending a Kid’s Inaugural Ball. (Malia and Sasha are lovely, but I think Malia needs to get bangs like her mother’s (what our British readers would call “fringe”) to make her forehead a tad less prominent.) (UPDATE: Guess what? The NRA’s threat against Malia and Sasha Obama is based on a lie. Quelle surprise.)
That’s what I’ve got for today. How about you?

I’ve read accounts of two of the accidental shootings outside gun shows: do Darwin awards get awarded multiply or is one divided between the many deserving recipients? I really think each of these dufuses deserves their own. One was transporting a LOADED weapon and the other didn’t know to clear the chamber of a pistol he’d just purchased.
Michelle Bachmann is a twit: I’d love a link to her stating she believes Sandy Hook was a hoax if anyone has one.
Your source on the “threat” to Obama’s daughters is completely backward, though. The NRA ad doesn’t say that his daughters no longer deserve to be protected: it says if his kids deserve armed guards then so do ours.
Gun Appreciation Week didn’t work out too well for the rootin’ tootin’ featherheads. I hope they have lots of these celebrations – remember that song “I didn’t know the gun was loaded.”
Bachmann’s been rather subdued lately as compared to her pre-November-2012 self. Looks like the very close election – in a CD that after the recent redistricting was more conservative than ever – has scared her into relative silence.
However, while Bachmann might not be openly (as far as we know) claiming that the Sandy Hook shootings were staged, her close associate Bradlee Dean sure is :

Phoenix Womans said, “. Don’t know if he’s shot any intruders, but he did kill his girlfriend, apparently accidentally.”
I’ve been talking to some of my friends with military backgrounds
and they mentioned that in almost everyone of these cases “ACCIDENTAL” shooting it is really a case of someone being negligent.
They either were negligent with handling, storing or carrying.
So I’d like everyone who writes about these “accidental” shootings to start looking at the situation and more accurately call them what they are negligence by someone and a firearm.
That guy who didn’t know how to clear his gun was negligent. I want to take the focus away from an item that just “goes off” as if had a will of it’s own to, the people who pulled the trigger. They were negligent in their handling of their gun.
Many thousands turned out for Gun Appreciation Day.
I think multitudes more would turn out for Gun Death Remembrance Day. Our slogan could be “How many more?”
Or ignorant.
Here’s the pertinent part of the story (I’ve bolded the part that made me raise my eyebrows):
“Directly over” her head? That’s not consistent with a gun being slid under a pillow, in my opinion. Is it just me?
PW, you wrote: ” but I think Malia needs to get bangs like her mothers (what our British readers would call “fringe”) to make her forehead a tad less prominent.”
What needs to be a tad less prominent is your laying a gratuitous insult on a young woman’s looks. Your judgement is demeaning to both Malia and yourself.
Whole Foods is in a pickle. Upscale products, premium pricing and smart employees to merchandise them. Poor ol’ Mackey knows these folks won’t take a pay cut for employer provided healthcare costs and are hard to replace. Then he goes and says this. Smart ” foodies ” are always in demand. And their customers are fairly progressive, too. Back to the boardroom and a revised business plan. What a pickled brain this character Mackey has. Isn’t he Texan? Talking about crapping in your own birds’ nest soup, hah! See ya’, wouldn’t want to be ya’ at that board meeting.
I’m thinking that Bachmann, Broun, Gohmert, and a whole bunch of other teabagger legislators should get into a giant polygamous marriage together. Once the deal is inked and the cake has been shmooshed all over everyone’s faces, we could then persuade them to go on a honeymoon from which they might never wish to return…like an extended bus tour of the trailer parks in Barstow, for example.
Hey…whatever works, right?
Sure. I say dufuses who deserve Darwin Awards and you say negligent: you’re using correct legal terms and i’m spitting out my anger at fools who should have never touched a firearm in the first place.
You’re right and any charges that get pressed will be using your language not mine, but for me “negligent” does does not convey the contempt appropriate to fools who get other people hurt.
Overreact much?
Apparently in his mind, gently commenting that I think Malia’s looks would be better served if she got a hairstyle similar to that of her mother is exactly the same as if I’d gone up and slapped the entire First Family in the face. Oh, well.
No kidding! Most of the hardcores already know about his plans to drive every local co-op out of business, and so avoid Whole Paycheck. Besides, you can get much better stuff at places like Mississippi Market in Saint Paul.
No one said it was “exactly the same” but it was gratuitously insulting. The fact that it could have been something worse doesn’t change that.
