I just received the following email from the National Religious Campaign Against Torture and wanted to pass it along to everyone. Looks like there may be a vote on it tomorrow (Thursday).
Please Call your Congressional Reps. ASAP
Dear Friends:
Rep. Rush Holt is offering an amendment to H.R. 2647 (the FY 2010 National Defense Authorization Act) that would require the Department of Defense to videotape interrogations of detainees in its custody. This amendment will likely be voted on tomorrow (Thursday) so please call your Representative immediately and ask him or her to vote in favor of the Holt videotaping amendment. To reach your Representative you can call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to his or her office.
By videotaping interrogations, we can take a small step toward ensuring a permanent end to our use of torture:
Knowing that interrogations are videotaped will send the message to our interrogators that abusing a detainee is not acceptable.
Videotape records of interrogations will enable the authorities to identify and resolve problems that might otherwise lead to the torture or other abuse of detainees.
A permanent record of each interrogation will help to protect U.S. interrogators from spurious allegations of abuse.
Tell your Representative to support the Holt videotaping amendment. Call (202) 224-3121 now!
Sincerely,
Rev. Richard Killmer
Executive Director

thank you.
Thanks for posting a comment Selise. I posted this last night after I got the email. My next email was unfortunately news that a singer/songwriter friend had died after his battle with cancer. Because of that 2nd email I wasn’t able to post any links to this diary because I was working on a blog post about our friend, Tim Krekel. If you get a chance I hope you will visit my blog and take a listen to some of his music and read the newspaper story about Tim. He was a wonderful man and a very talented guitar player. He actually played lead guitar for Jimmy Buffet for many years.
i’ve been a fan of holt’s ever since the fisa fight. he was outstanding – the best in congress.
…. and thank you for the link to your post on tim (and the lovely music links). i’m very sorry for your loss.
It passed 224-193. Only 10 Republicans voted yes. Hugs, he’d smile at your words and tell you to dry your tears. We meet few in our lives who could be written of as you wrote of Tim…”For Tim, Love is what it was all about.”
