Normally, I would just ignore this kind of nonsense. But I actually think it’s a stunt, an Overton window piece of wackiness intended to make it seem like President Obama has less support than he really does. That or the media outlets reporting it as “news” are startlingly stupid. Either one seems plausible.
In any case, they have a head start on me and have been very, very busy…if you search for that petition it got posted allllll over the place. Please sign and forward. I want this ridiculous temper tantrum to get lots of public mockery and to fail in its intent. (Which again, I don’t think is really about secession. It’s about undermining the President).
UPDATE: Or how about this one started by a guy from Alabama.

Brilliant! Signed!
In 1860, the governor of South Carolina declared Lincoln’s election an act of war against the slave states.
If they interfere with reactionary forces the traditions and pillars of this country mean nothing to the neo-confederates.
How about this one?
I would love see the entire South, along with Texas, secede. We lefties ought to create a petition in support of their secessionist desires. It would be a bipartisan effort.
I agree, cut em loose. Nobody should die holding these creeps in a Union they still despise. 150 yrs. hasn’t it seems changed shit.
Nice. I hope you enjoy that bag of delusion. We toofless rebs love to secede and you dumb yankees love to spout off about absolutely nothin’.
First of all…if you consider yourself a liberal, and you advocate secession, you are a contemptible hypocrite. Your animus towards the South doesn’t have a thing to do with anything except classism, and in the same way that Republicans have a racism problem, Democrats have a classism problem. Working class people who USED to vote Democrat now don’t, and it’s not because they’re stupid. It’s because it’s clear the Democratic party doesn’t actually give a damn about them. Look how they treat the unions.
Secondly, if you buy into that red-state/blue-state bullshit, then YOU ARE THE PROBLEM. You have bought a piece of right-wing propaganda hook, line, and sinker, and you’re helping to promote it. Shut the hell up while the grownups are talking.
Thirdly, the petitions are from states like Oregon and Michigan as well. Which last I looked were not in the South.
Guess what. The secession stuff is ALL OVER the right wing crazytalk. I guess they did some soul-searching, found they had none, and came up with this.
I genuinely think it’s a deliberate strategy and a stunt. There’s a concept called the Overton window, which basically says that if you fill the air with crazy, then less-extreme but still messed up positions start to sound more reasonable. They aren’t trying to secede. They’re just trying to make people think that President Obama has less support than he actually really does have. The secession petitions also look like they were the product of a coordinated effort…they were spammed on many, many different right-wing websites. They also all have the same wording…which means they were created by the same people. This is not a genuine expression of what people want, it’s a deliberate sowing of dissent by playing into regional prejudices. Gosh, who likes to stir up conflict and undermine the President? The right wing. They do that because gridlock and hostility serve their purposes. STOP FALLING FOR IT.
I like this one too, started by a guy from Alabama.
