Arlen wants us to trust him because Joe Biden does and Ed Rendell does. Somehow I don’t think that’s an adequate answer. Live Blogging Scrapple and Joe. You can watch it or stream it on CSPAN

Having a real hard time getting a solid signal here in the big all in Pittsburgh.
His answer to almost any question is “trust me”
Susie and Ari are asking really good questions.
Ari asked about Nate SIlver’s “Specterometer” Scrapple hasn’t heard of it.
Q. Why should we trust him to continue the progressive votes he’s taken since Sestak came along.
Answer: Trust me
Talking about Bush v. Gore—he thought it bad decision.
Susie asks is there something you would do now you couldn’t before?
Stem Cells
My question—did he feel so strongly about stem cell research before he got cancer?
Ari:
What about public option? Who can you help Obama get?
Grassley, Snow, Collins, a couple more . . . some how I don’t think that will happen. Has he heard what Grassley said lately? And Susie points that out.
Scrapple notes todays NYT and says he’ll call Grassley today. Gets applause.
Ari says people urging him to call him now. He scowls and says he will call him back stage and whoever made the suggestion can watch him.
He thinks there are 61 votes for cloture—counts Snow in.
Susie: At what point does winning at all costs- the r. position get dumped for working for the common good? How do we break through that?
Scrapple—you can show that by a person in my position facing down the r caucus. Keeps going back to the stimulus package. [I think that’s what drove him over the line along with the threat from Toomey]
Susie says he was brave for coming here. He says it’s easy compared with yesterday.
Last question elevator speech —why should we support him
experience, making peace with enemies, Saddam. Castro, etc. active foreign policy; hard working and imaginative.
Oy.
Q to Joe
Why do you consider yourself a progressive?
talks about being in the military and that everyone there is a dem but doesn’t know it.—health care, education. opportunity.
talks about his daughter with cancer and getting the health care she needs.
So far he’s using his standard stump
Ari; people here more inclined to support you but people in PA think he’s not ready and positioned. What about the fact that the big names are supporting Arlen.
A. I can only measure myself against myself. Talks about being most productive in frosh class. Talks about constituent services. Again from stump speech.
Says that Obama didn’t get where he is because of connections but audacity. He’s not worried about what establishment says. He wants to work for the people and earn their respect and vote.
Susie asks him about his vote for FISA—you’re a surrogate for all the people we here supported and then turned around and voted for/against the things we cared about.
IF you’re going to go against one of the key votes we care about why don’t you say so up front?
He voted for it for different reasons—not the ones we care about. Wanted a judge to rule on the retro immunity.
What would you do to change the surveillance architecture?
Would change the national security letters —must be determined by the court.
From the floor—what is your position on climate change and energy policy.
Voted for it but disappointed—it’s a bad bill but better than nothing. Had a dozen amendments before the rules committee.
150% behind the public option both because it’s right and because it is necessary. Economically we need it.
Is there a difference between you and Arlen on this?
Says that Arlen hangs a trophy in his office with him and Dole lauding the failure of Clinton’s health plan.
Position on DC rights?
A- he voted for the bill for DC rep. How can we send people to war and not let them have representation?
Susie “the netroots will you still love me tomorrow syndrome” The come here to woo us and then when elected they run as far away from us as possible. Netroots were the highest contributors in 2006. How do we as a group get that credibility and respect from you?
He says call him—his phone lines are open until 9 pm.
Joe asked about having outreach to netroots—Chris Bowers is it so far, he admits he needs more. He’s talking more about the technology than the relationship. {we need to work on that}
DADT and DOMA he’s for the repeal of both—co-sponsor of DADT needs to get it done this year.
Thanks Deb!
