Had Qaddafi, through mass slaughter, managed to again gain firm control of Libya it would have been an ominous precedent that would influence events all over the world.
After the Chinese government reestablishment firm control following the Tiananmen Square massacre, protesters feared the same thing in their country as recently as in Burma. Protests in Egypt, even Wisconson, would have been affected if in recent memory there was a massive slaughter that put a dictator firmly back in charge again,

After the UN resolution, France quickly attacked rather than joining the US and Britain who were arguing with Qaddafi over whether he was following his self-proclaimed ceasefire,

Had Obama at that point not sent in US planes and missiles. Qaddafi and his old arch-enemy bin Laden would have ganged up on France with threats. Whether or not attacks on France followed it would lead to a world where there was a lot more backing down.
I want to thank Vietnam for invading Cambodia and ending the Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge bloodbath. When President Bush overthrew the Saddam dictatorship the US engaged in nation building and telling the world the US knew best, while in Libya President Obama is trying to get out of the leadership role as much as possible. Learning to “mind our own business” would be the wrong lesson to learn from the recent problems in Iraq and Afghanistan.
If one goggles “France declares war on al Qaeda” and vice versa, one will see that France has so far done a good job standing up to extremism at very little cost. When the US does something to combat al Qaeda it ends up helping inspire al Qaeda’s belief that it is bankrupting the West. France is spending less and less on military spending as it accomplishes more and more.
It so far has been succeeding in bringing the 5% of France that practices Islam into the French community to the extent that when terrorists held French citizens hostage demanding that veils be allowed in French schools, French Muslims marched in support of France,

Anti-Muslim hysterics in the US and elsewhere isn’t in sight in France. Rep. King and his domestic terror hearings couldn’t have happen in France. Peter King, after condemning a NY City mosque project by a US Muslim, Imam Raul, who participates in speaking tours sponsored by the State Department, and frequently condemns al Qaeda as a Cult-of-Death, Rep. King turned around and hysterically condemned US Muslims for not cooperating more with the FBI.
Qaddaffi faces war crimes charges as of March 3, 2011. Some sites claim the Qadaffi was ready to flee the country and this resolution got in the way.
Now Italy is trying to get coalition partners to now agree on amnesty and safe-haven for Qaddafi if he leaves, sparing any more dying in this war,

Some might say, what about “Hitler” but perhaps 90% of the holocaust could have been averted had Germany been allowed to sue for peace instead of facing the Nuremberg trials. Perhaps if war criminals were never punish some may interpret it as a license to do what they want. But nothing encourages oppress more than the combining of “Mind Ones Own Business” ideology with “No Appeasement” for criminals. Again thank you France. Thank you the US being helpful rather than under the Bush’s trying to be in charge.
Some claiming to be mad at US’s participation with the coalition in Libya may actually be worried about all the exaggerate stories we are getting about Iran and Syria, something that it is important to try to avoid. The lesson of World War I was supposedly “No Appeasement” the lesson of Vietnam and Iraq supposedly “Don’t get involved”. We always seem to learn the wrong lessons from history.
“The people united can always be exterminated” is fortunately, thanks to France and Obama, a lesson we don’t need to unlearn.

I believe that if Gaddafi was allowed to continue his well documented slaughter of the Libyan people it would only have had a deletrious effect on the Arab Spring. Was there a better way to stop this bloodshed? I honestly don’t know. But did the events in Libya give Assad in Syria second thoughts? we may never know for sure. Anyway, thank you for the post but prepare for a very negative response as your post is out of the “group think” here.
Worry about the American dictator.
There is no independent evidence of MASSACRE! MASSACRE! MASSACRE!
Yes, the rebels and those who support them say there have been deliberate killings of dozens of civilians. But no independent reporters or observers (such as UN monitors, hint, hint) witnessed those alleged incidents. We should ask for much better evidence when ‘stopping massacre’ is the bedrock justification of Obama and West’s war against the Libyan government.
Libya was definitely kicking the hell out of the rebel forces this March. Civilians without question were dying during that war. Like they have in all wars worldwide since the dawn of air power (not that that makes it right) But collateral damage from attacking the rebels is not what the West has accused and basically convicted Libya of doing. The contention is that Libya deliberately was targeting civilians for ‘massacre’. MASSACRE, MASSACRE, MASSACRE, that is the word we hear over and over.
Again, where is the serious evidence for such a serious charge, a charge that now justifies an unprovoked imperialist air war that definitely is also killing lots of civilians.
There is no documentation at all. There are accusations by the rebels and rebel supporters. There are no independent eye witnesses, there are no UN monitors (would be a good idea to have lots of them on the ground in Libya, as Libya has requested) who have seen one massacre.
But MASSACRE MASSACRE MASSACRE is the one-word PR campaign for why the U.S. is fighting its air war on Libya and killing plenty of civilians as it does so.
I don’t have the statemeant something like blood will flow on the streets unless the Rebels give in. But one of Qaddafi’s son’s seemed to announce an upcomming bloodbath. This doesn’t have to be true since other announcements like a Qadaffu sponcered ceasefire wasn’t true. The way reporters have been abused someone would have to be pretty heroic to go there as an unamed witness.
He appeared to be talking about the rebels. He made no reference to civilians, but the Western imperialists and their media have interpeted those statements by Qaddafi and/or his sons as somehow “We’re gonna massacre civilians.” Amazing. This is important stuff, now justifying a massive air war on the western half of Libya, lots of civilians will die from that air war … and all on such obviously flimsy, trumped-up pseudo-evidence.
There is no rep king in france…
Wasn’t sarkozy ****ing with muslims with the whole banning burkas thing.
No he was trying to get them to mainstream not leave like right wing extremists in Holland are.
Mumsims in France don’t want to be pestered but they appeciate being wanted.
Ah, I just remember a lot of stories about stuff like that coming out a year ago. Hopefully it isn’t as bad as bill o’ freaking out about footbaths.
So Fair Left, Qaddofi only want to massicure his opponents and doesn’t mind before they were armed bombing neighborhoods from the air to do it.
We constantly hear about the Israeli lobby, but there is the Russian and Chinese lobby that likes to hack the Internet. There is the righ-wing Cuban lobby that might have exposed a Russian so-called spy ring who were actually a ring of lobbyist trying to create good images of the Russian Government. One of the persons exposed wasn’t a Russian but a Peruvian-American interested in ending the blockade of Cuba which might mean the right-wing Cuban lobby outed the Russian lobby.
Anyway Farrakhan is hysterically condemning Obama, and it is known that Qadaffi gave a lot of financing and other help the the Black Muslim organization. Good articlesopposing Qaddafi are hard to find and several blogs crashed after posting strong articles on Libya. Maybe the Libyan lobby was planning a PR and hacking campaign in this country for years,
