If any doubt was left about the power of big money in our politics, the Wisconsin election destroyed it. Charles and David Koch goosed Gov. Scott Walker’s campaign with $10 million through their front group Americans for Prosperity, $1 million through the Republican Governors Association, and more from members of the “million-dollar donor club” of financial titans that meet regularly at Koch-hosted secret summits. Meanwhile, the official campaign of Democratic opponent Tom Barrett raised about $4 million. Is it any wonder that Walker climbed steadily in the polls and ultimately won?

Yet as my new film Koch Brothers Exposed illustrates, the Kochs’ political influence goes beyond buying the public debate. The Kochs have also been investing in suppressing the vote — providing a one-two punch to democracy. First they try to change your mind, and failing that, they try to take your vote.
The invaluable Lee Fang reveals at Republic Report that a $100,000 donation linked to the Koch brothers went to a Florida group called Protect Your Vote in 2010. The perversely named organization was formed to fight ballot initiatives demanding fair redistricting. Specifically, the initiatives — known as Amendments 5 and 6 — said district boundaries couldn’t be drawn to favor a political party, deny minorities equal opportunity, or be gerrymandered.
The initiatives ended up winning. But who could have opposed such sensible guidelines? Anyone with a vested interest in maintaining control over the political process instead of trusting the public to govern itself. Anyone, that is, who wants to preserve the illusion of public accountability while rigging results behind the scenes — creating suppression in effect, if not in name. Could there be a more apt description of the Koch brothers’ modus operandi?
Indeed, Kurt Browning, the official who ran Protect Your Vote, is the man behind Florida’s recent effort to purge the rolls of potentially eligible voters. Naturally, the disenfranchised folks are disproportionately likely to vote for Democratic candidates. The Justice Department has now demanded that Florida stop the purge in light of evidence that the list — which at one point had around 180,000 people — has numerous mistakes and is violating federal voter protection laws. So the man the Koch brothers backed shifted from shady redistricting to denial of the vote, removing even the appearance of fair democracy.
The Kochs have supported outright suppression in the past. They are longstanding leaders in the American Legislative Exchange Council, which has pushed voter ID bills making it more difficult for vulnerable populations to vote. In 2011, 34 state legislatures introduced such bills, potentially disenfranchising up to 21 million voters.
The Kochs, then, have a crafty strategy for commandeering the political process: spend vast sums not only for TV ads, “grassroots” campaigns, and think tanks that manipulate public opinion, but also on direct efforts to ensure that many of those who aren’t fooled are unable to vote anyway.
This is the Koch vote — a constituency of two with the bullhorn of millions.

Oh no, the Democratic Party doesn’t get off the hook that easy, not in Wisconsin they don’t! To quote a short article at counterpunch.org by John Stauber ( The Genius of Recall):
“Big money did us in! Really? It is funny to hear paid progressives decry “big money” when progressive organizations — non-profits, think tanks, media — are mostly floated by 1% Dems and their foundations.”
A vibrant campaign sticking to the issues will trump money any day of the week. It’s only when you pit money against money that the guys with more of it win. Why even play that game? Gee, it must sorta be what you believe in.
” Gee, it must sorta be what you believe in.”
That could be taken personally, which I didn’t mean at all. I meant “Why would the Democratic Party even play that game? Gee, it must sorta be what they believe in.” That was the intent of my post, sorry if it got misunderstood. The ‘game’ is electoral politics based on money.
You might think the Kochs would be nobler.
I’m sure that part of the problem is that Barrett didn’t offer much of an alternative to Walker. Barrett is a Blue Dog and loves to talk about austerity and “balancing the budget” and so forth. “When given the choice between a Republican and somebody who acts like a Republican, the people will pick the real Republican every time”.
Harry Truman
You’d think that the electoral slaughter of the Blue Dog caucus in 2010 would have shown the way forward but they are collectively too stupid or too corrupt to learn the simplest lessons.
I’m looking forward to viewing “Koch Brothers: The Movie”.
Speaking of buying elections, have any FDP’s read/heard anything about Diebold and other touch-screen voting machines being used in the Walker recall election? I read they were in use at least in some places which surprised me because I thought with the questions about past stolen elections, they were no longer in use.
Duh.
Would that be THESE Koch brothers and THESE corrupt Democrats…?
Jon Corzine…former Democratic Senator from New Jersy… former Democratic governor of New Jersy… and major Democratic Party campaign contributor and Democratic party fundraiser…and major fundraiser for Barack Obama’s presidential election campaign...and personal friend of Barack Obama… and head of MF Global.
When MF Global declared bankruptsy… a lot of money went missing [1.2 billion and counting]…
BUT, one of the firms largest and longest term investors was allowed to withdraw and transfer ALL of their money from MFG just before the bankruptsy… thereby insuring they lost no money [not one penny]… unlike other investors who had their accounts frozen and will end up loosing large amounts of money.
Who was that investor…?
Get ready for this…
THE KOCH BROTHERS !
The funniest post I’ve read on MF Global was one with a headline touting that they knew where the $1.2 billion was. So I read the whole story. They never revealed where it was.
Not recommended… account of being Democratic party propaganda.
Both parties are totally corrupt. Anyone who’s criticism excludes one of the two corrupt parties… is nothing but a shill for the other corrupt party.
Hilarious…
Keep speaking out.
ok…here is my thing…..
While I an not a Kochhead I understand WHY they have been doing what they have been doing. Its always pretty easy to connect their dots.
There are however some other mega richies with their fingers in the pie. A few of them its hard to figure out what their agenda is. There seems to be no direct benefit to them. Those are the ones that scare me. Like they arent giving romney millions becuase they care about their tax rate.
But anyway, the Kochs know everyone knows. And they just dont care. Nobodies going to stop them. The arent doing anything outright illegal (lol..in reagrds to politics and policy). Youll have to pass laws. Lol. But they own the government so that wont happen.
The right also beats you guys when it comes to reviling billionares. People who dont know much hear Soros or Buffet and think they are bad guys. The Kochs just wont gain traction. Lol. Maybe because the run the media?
They got 20-some odd adherents elected to congress.
What are Occupy’s accomplishements?
Thiel (Paypal, google) donated $2.7 billion to Paul so he would be a shill for Romney, and otherwise very weak candidate.
Make that million, not billion.
The whole election process seems hopelessly corrupt.
I’m tired of hearing how Big Money is the problem with politics and elections. It is a problem, but it’s not the problem. People are looking at this from the wrong end of the telescope. Thee real problem is the electorate. The lazy, stupid, ignorant, ill-informed people devoid of any critical thinking ability. George Carlin had it pegged perfectly years ago when he did a routine about why he doesn’t vote. He said in essence that it’s the electorate who are at fault. After all, they keep voting for the pieces of shit who are in office. Where are all the candidates of intelligence, integrity, courage, imagination? They’re not in office because that’s not who the people want. As GC said, it’s simple, “Garbage in; garbage out.” Willfully stupid fucks elect the crap in office. That’s what people want and that’s what they get.
If what Truman said is true, then Romney will be a shoo in.
In an election like this one, money was less important than those where the candidates and their positions are less well known. In this case, both platforms were clear cut. Progressives have been making their position well known for over a year. And it was clear from the polls that virtually everyone had made up their mind long before June 5.
And in part the result was that the public unions could not even elect their own candidate in the primary.
tremoluxman may think the voters are incapable of a wise decision – whether or not that is true, whatever the Democratic party is doing, it isn’t resonating. From outside Wisconsin it looks to me like a battle between local public employees and their pay and benefits and the local real estate taxpayers who foot the bill and are looking our for their interests.
I see trouble ahead.
Wisconsin is over, so now the king can put on his comfortable shoes and campaign there without fear.
Time for more hope and change, and to look forward, not back. So says Mr. Axelrod in this latest campaign link, which reveals the caring and determined side of our president.
Check out the form letter that is going to be sent out:

When are all of you going to put the blame where it should go. The problem is the voter. THEY VOTE AGAINST THEMSELVES. I don’t know what it is….the water, the environment or maybe it is education. Because people are getting dumber and more commatose! You are smart people here but no one wants to look at the problem realistically. I work at the airport and see this everyday. People are in another world. Do you know how many times I go through all of the flights for the day to find a passenger because they don’t know where they are going or what airline they are on? Union households in Wisc were voting against the Union. Do you think any business owner would vote for us if we told them we were going to raise their taxes and throw regulations on them ??? ITS THE VOTERS FOLKS. !!!
Well, that about sums it up.
People should all start wearing campaign buttons etc. so we can actually see what people are voting for because we damn well obviously aren’t getting the real outcomes.
I don’t believe for a second, Scott walker won. Don’t believe it.
I don’t know. There are a lot of idiots in this state. You wouldn’t believe how shrill and loud the anti-union and anti-government rhetoric is hear. I know people who voted for Walker only because the omnioptent unions are in control of every Democratic candidate. These are people who were otherwise calm and reasonable about politics and their vote just a few years ago. All anyone has to do is even suggest that one candidate has union ties or support and they are voting for the other candidate, even if that other candidate were eating live babies right in front of them.
Here’s my question. All this ALEC and Koch evil? How widespread is it? How instilled into the boots on the ground is it? I mean if the Kochs’ et. al. who are spearheading this disappeared, wouldn’t their evil disappear as well?
What we need is to make voting mandatory. If you are 18 or over you do jail time if you don’t vote. All elections: paper ballots only, hand counted.
