Words have power, they convey meaning, we use them to communicate, but progressives keep using the wrong words, we keep using words that empower the corporate enemies of democracy, we keep using words that distort meaning and communicate false realities.
We need to stop doing that.
Stop using words like “Congress” and “Elections” and “Democratic Party”. We don’t have a Congress, so why are so many progressives still saying we have one by using that word? We used to have a Congress, it was where representatives of the people used to pass laws that enabled the middle class to prosper so the whole country would prosper. That doesn’t happen any more, it doesn’t happen any more because we have no Congress. Calling that K Street whorehouse “Congress” confers legitimacy on a corrupted institution that has no legitimacy, it reinforces the illusion that representative democracy still exists in this country, it pushes us further down the road to that nightmare world George Orwell warned us about . . .
A world of fear and treachery and torment, a world of trampling and being trampled upon, a world which will grow not less but more merciless as it refines itself. Progress in our world will be progress toward more pain.
Progressive bloggers also need to stop talking about “elections”. We don’t have elections in this country any more, we have Deceit Contests. The liars with the most cash usually win and then rake in even more cash from that steady flow of K Street bribes those liars in what used to be Congress call campaign contributions. If you want to talk about the Midterm Deceit Contests, go right ahead, but call them what they are. Don’t reinforce the illusion that we have “elections“ by using that word, expose the illusion with accurate words, with words that expose the pervasive deceit entrenched at every level of this Orwellian political system, with words that communicate what’s actually happening.
Progressive bloggers also need to stop saying “Democratic Party“. There is no Democratic Party any more, so don’t call that clusterfuck of craven corporate whores the Democratic Party. If you do, you’re conferring integrity on people who have no integrity, you’re conveying respect for people who deserve no respect, you’re equating Steny Hoyer with Harry Truman, you’re equating Rahm Emanuel with Bobby Kennedy, you’re equating Ben Nelson with Paul Wellstone.
People will say we have to use commonly accepted political terminology such as “Congress” and “Elections” and “Democratic Party”. No we don’t. It’s self-defeating to use those terms, they’ve become Orwellian, there’s no truth in them, they don’t reflect reality, they perpetuate false realities.
Understand the implications of the words you use, be aware that you are constantly being manipulated, recognize that language itself is being used as a weapon against us, realize that every time you use commonly accepted political terminology you are adding another brick to that corporate prison wall that surrounds us all.
Be aware of your thoughts, for they become your words.
Be aware of your words, for they become your actions.
Be aware of your actions, for they become your habits.
Be aware of your habits, for they become your character.
Be aware of your character, for it becomes your destiny. — Anonymous
Don’t use their words, their words are lies. Don’t use their language, their language is a cage. We need to use our own words, words of empowerment, words of enlightenment, words of emancipation. If we do that, we can transform our thoughts and words into our destiny, we can free ourselves from this corporate hell, where heroes are traded for ghosts, where one generation after another is damned to endless exploitation, where there are no reprieves, where the truth is in solitary confinement, where capitalism is the executioner and the whole world is on death row.

Don’t use their words, their words are lies.
Don’t use their language, their language is a cage.
Use your own words, words of empowerment, words of enlightenment, words of emancipation.
Great work, Rusty.
I’m with you 100%.
Let’s get out of that cage.
Thank you, clemenza.
A great post, as always, Rusty!
Thanks for helping me to realize why posting on some sites makes feel like I’m banging my head against the wall!
Thanks. As you know, dhfsfc, those sites aren’t progressive, they just say they are. It’s very frustrating to post there, but it’s important, it matters, a good progressive post there has a positive impact on more people than you might think. The more active members will be hostile but others will hear you.
I’m all for words being used amongst we the people to communicate, share, learn and help us all to be better informed and lead us to a greater understanding. Even to try and persuade others who don’t quite see the gloom and reality as we do.
But words ain’t gonna change THIS reality, not one whit.
To change THIS reality, is gonna take action, behavior.
Not words.
So, to that point, I kinda disagree WHAT words we use amongst our selves much matters.
Our actions, and behaviors, will either change things, or the lack of our action and behavior WON’T change anything.
It ain’t the words of our reality that’s killin us, hoss.
It’s our lack of action and behavior.
It’s all connected. Words and action are needed. We can’t convince enough Americans to take action with us unless the words we use are effective. We have to shatter their illusions, with words, because their illusions were created by words and are maintained by words.
Action is the ultimate solution, but words are necessary in order to convince people that action is necessary.
Great post Rusty…authentic, real, and a good punch to the gut from whence breath and words are formed…Thank you!
Larue…well stated and ringing loud with the necessary angst and call to action.
The sages said “Matter borne of spirit is wondrous, but Spirit borne of matter is the greatest action”
Thank you, edve.
I love that quote, edve. Unlike pundits and politicians, those sages knew what they were talking about.
Great Post.
There are very few who will understand what You said, and those that do won’t yet believe it.
Our Government has the people of this Country so baffaloed that they still think we have a Government of the people, still think they can change things by voting, and believe they can’t do anything to change things.
We the people wouldn’t vote for the Wars and ask to fund them, We wanted the public option, We been begging for reforms and controls and are getting little to none, We been begging to get the Economy fixed, and their to be jobs, and their answer is to cut out unemployment. Now the call is to do away with SS. We wanted the oil spill stopped and cleaned up, and they keep stopping people from cleaning it up. Everything we the people want were told to suck eggs.
Yet their are many people who keep saying we have the best Government in the world, because they are told that by people in the Government. They will go to the polls like good little citizens, and vote the same people back, or some new lier like You said. They won’t ask why a person would spend millions to get a couple hundred thousand doller job, and claim they are doing it to be a public servant. They make us public suckers, and we say thinks for it.
Thank you, iremember54, I’m going to keep saying it, many others here are going to keep saying it too. More people will start listening to us, the illusions are crumbling, the oil catastrophe in the Gulf is exposing the moral bankruptcy of corporate capitalism, it’s going to come crashing down sooner than most people think, and this corrupt political system will come crashing down with it.
Thank you for the post. While I wholeheartedly agree that action is required, it’s really important to understand the value and power of the spoken and written word. Some philosophies posit that actions follow what our minds focus on. Words definitely have power – power in our minds, power in our actions.
While we must not rely solely on changing our words, language and definitions (as in: simply resting on those laurels), I do agree that correcting our language is important.
Rusty: you are indeed correct. Whatever we have going on right now, it is emphatically NOT the US government that many of use grew up with, or were taught about in our schools. There has been a coup d’etat, which has resulted in something really perverted, mangled and twisted, which serving ONLY the needs of the excessively wealthy, hijacking our nation for bad ends, ruining our environment, and for sure making us all MUCH LESS SAFE from all sorts of things, from terrorism on the down the line.
I quite agree that we do NOT have a Congress or a POTUS or a SCOTUS or elections in the way that we used to. And, just as Jane Hamsher has introduced the concept of the Veal Pen, I think you make a very good point.
Thanks. Good post. I agree.
I wish that you were correct in saying that the corrupt system will collapse. It seems to be gaining more power and becoming more arrogant to me. They call us, little people, claim the unemployed don’t want to work and that they are doing, gods work.
All of the levers of power are under their control and they are tightening their grip on the internet, the last place that we are free to use real words.
Corrupt political and economic systems don’t fall, they must be taken down. They will fight to maintain their control with all the powers they posess.
Look at how easy it was for them to destroy ACORN and deflect the blame for the economic crisis onto illegal immigrants and poor people.
Thank you, onitgoes.
The Soviet Union had the most repressive political and economic system in human history, but it collapsed in 3 days. Conditions steadily worsened for years, and when the tipping point came with the coup attempt, everything fell apart very quickly. The U.S. is only few years away from the same kind of collapse, IMO.
The only thing that’s gonna shatter non believer’s illusions is when they are victimized, too.
You can speechify in any way you want with a white, racist, fundie xtian libertarian viewpoint and you’ll get nowhere.
But thanks for the reply.
The SU collapsed due to many reasons, economics being the most important.
What replaced the old Soviet system is interesting. It is a hyper version of western capitalism a kleptocracy. Their new system doesn’t seem to be in danger of collapsing.
I think we are adopting their model just with better PR.
I’m in full agreement with this comment.
The system as is is unsustainable, and factor in mama nature, and you got recipe for disaster across the board.
History proves it, when the gap between the haves and have nots becomes too wide, systems collapse.
The illusions are powerful, but reality is more powerful. It’s going to take names and kick ass, it’s only a matter of when.
Thanks, Larue, I appreciate your comments, and everyone’s comments.
This is true . . .
It’s a matter of how long PR can conceal reality.
That gap is wider than it’s been in a century, and it’s getting wider. If that problem isn’t effectively addressed, I don’t see how collapse and/or revolution can be avoided.
Another word we need to quit using is progressive, it never had much meaning.
What we are really talking about is radical change. We are already labeled as the Radicals by the mainstream Right and Left.
We need to embrace that label and be proud of it.
That’s a good point. I’m not going to use that word anymore.
Words.
I like that tune, thanks, unbetchaiam.
