What child is this, who laid to rest,
On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,
While shepherds watch are keeping?
Jesus of Nazareth was born in a land occupied by foreign soldiers, he lived among the poor, he was one of them, he saw their suffering and would not be silent about it, he knew why they were exploited and who was responsible for it. He told the truth about power and those who abuse it, about wealth and those who hoard it, about war and those who wage it, about injustice and those who inflict it.
So he was silenced. Arrested, put on trial, and executed.
On this Christmas Eve, abuse of power is pervasive, the moneychangers control entire governments, deceit is on a rampage, the halls of justice are dark and empty, tens of millions of people have no job, hundreds of millions of children are hungry. This is not a silent night, it is not a holy night. Oppression is not silent and depravity is not holy. . . .
Chris Hedges . . .
The powerful protect their own, they divide the world into the damned and the blessed, the patriots and the enemy, the privileged and the weak. They insist that extinguishing lives in foreign wars, and in our prison complexes, is a form of human progress. They cannot see that the suffering of a child in Kandahar, or a child in the blighted urban pocket of our nation’s capital, diminishes and impoverishes us all. They are deaf, dumb and blind.
All is not calm, all is not bright, there is no calm, there is no light. Evil is on the march, westward leading, still proceeding, onward down the roads of night. The world does not in solemn stillness lay, to hear the angels sing, it waits in the darkness, in fear of what’s coming next.
Chris Hedges . . .
Defenseless under the night, our world in stupor lies, yet dotted everywhere, ironic points of light flash out, wherever the just exchange their messages. May I, composed like them of eros and of dust, beleaguered by the same negation and despair, show an affirming flame.
Composed of eros and dust, beleaguered by negation and despair, we exchange our messages here, while politicians exchange messages with bankers, issue decrees of austerity, and expect silent obedience. But there will be no silence, there will be no obedience to criminals or their messengers. A song of Justice will be raised on High, the words of that anthem will be sung in the valleys of the oppressed, affirming voices will join in and raise it higher, until the mountaintops ring with it, until the whole world will hears it.

Raise that song on High.
Until the mountaintops ring with it.
Until the whole world hears it.
Thanks, Rusty.
Amen, Rusty. We need to raise our voices in song and solidarity.

Large-souled Rusty; I blogged about this Sonit piece at TomDispatch this morning as an antidote to my personal fear of the monolithic train coming at our futures, our revenue streams, and our freedom of expression to dissent. It is a counter-intuitive piece Tom asked for, asking, “Where is any hope?” essentially. Solnit sees there is a shadow government/economy based on us helping each other; I think that it’s important to remember that all of us are making a difference. How we can entice all these empathetic souls toward shrugging off the moneychangers is one of the big challenges. But we all suspect that it’s possible. Many thanks for your poetic posts that encourage us, yet sing to our despair and knowledge of how high the stakes are just now.

We’ve got your back, Rusty.
“Until the mountaintops ring with it” – thanks, Rusty, for the holiday hope. Happy holiday to you and yours. Thanks for all the great writing.
I wonder if its ever occured to pat robertson that Christ was born in Bethlehem under political circustances VERY similar to today. Herod the great was King in Isreal and a willing puppet of a foreign empire.
I should add that it was Edger @ docudharma.com who turned me on to it.
Thank you for your diaries, Jim, they affirm that journalism is alive and well at FDL.
We sure do. Truth is an anthem sweet, and we need to keep singing it.
Happy Holidays, ubetchaiam, thank you for the video gifts, I love the music you always share with us.
That is about the most beautiful thing Iv’e seen lately. A real good post.
I might not be your typical religeous nut… I do have some little bit of reverence.
We boy scouts were supposed to have that, because reverence is one of the scout’s 12 things. Boy Scouts of America was my saviour. Because I was not doing jack shit in the school. The communitee had guys that were… military guys, and they took on to make our boy scout troup. And so we had some semblance of a military and also that we were tought about many things, that we should know.
I do have a reverence for religious things, even today. I do own a KJ bible and strong’s exaustive concordance… if I would just read them.
This land is JHC land… ( Jesus H Christ)…
I also have “H” as a middle name… so what does that imply? I might be a uppand commin’ star… or I could be a complete pc o crap…
Nice post. Thanks. And Merry Christmas, from a Buddhist, albeit not a good one.
I hope everyone bookmarks that article and studies it, thank you, wendy.
Edger is everywhere. :)
as an athiestic person, from a family that is such… I am not against good religious belief, I am in favor of all who believe, what ever it may be.
I hope all of you will adhere to what you do believe, and maybe… some of us who ain’t that good with all of what is… we will learn
They’ll ring with it. We may not live to see it, but we can bring that day closer. Happy holidays, Twain, thank you for all of your encouragement and support.
I have a religious gene. I am not anti relegious, I just want to say it.
And I am not against religiousness, and all that is.
I am thinking that somebody like me who is atheistic, and does not really believe in any of that stuff… well I do believe.
I do believe, I know about some of what that there is… And it might not be all that cool budd.
Thank you, geoshmoe. Religious establishments get corrupted, but I have reverence for the fundamental teachings of the world’s great religions, I think many people do.
Thank you, OhioGringo. Buddha knew what he was talking about, so did Gandhi, especially when he observed that so many Christians are so unlike their Christ.
There is goodness within you, geoshmoe, that’s all that really matters. We all have a lot to learn, I know I do.
Geoshmoe… would you please come in… and STFU. Yes that is me… that is asking you to do that! You have gone on there on and on… you’re off your leash
geogeo… and I am axing you to STFU…! please sir?
Geoshmoe.. or Geo geo is drunk as usual. sorry it is not too unusual, around here to see that, and so just say sorry, and best wishes of course!
Yessus Christopher, I forgot to say… HAppy Xmas and a mmerry new jierrrr.
I never thought much about the Bible story of Jesus`s birth as recorded in ” Luke 1 through 20.” After my son was born, it all made sense.I do not believe Almighty God was prouder of his son than I upon His birth and all His life. I would have sent my angels to light up the night sky on 22 January 1974 if I had any. I used to think why was God celebrating when He knew His Son faced a dreaful execution but then it came to me. All men`s sons face dreadful executions most of the time. Few of us are lucky enough to go out easy. With that realization it all made sense. To those of you who have lost your faith or never had any or became to intelligent to think you are the be all and end all of all things, He stills loves you and that gift of free will He gave us is still there. Spend 5 minutes reading the Old Book this morning and think of what kind of light show you would or would have thrown when your child was born.
Zenostoa
I think your affirming words of love for your son will touch everyone who reads them, zenostoa. Thank you. People here have different beliefs, but I think many of them would agree with Teilhard de Chardin, who said, “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience, we are spiritual beings having a human experience.”
I’ve been drunk once or twice myself, geoshmoe. :)
right on, rusty, I came back in to say something to zeno… but I am glad you beat me to it. cause, I don’r remember what I was wanting to say
many of them would agree with Teilhard de Chardin, who said, “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience, we are spiritual beings having a human experience.”
That is a great thing!
i do have some beliefs of my own of course. I do believe that evil is real.
I do believe that we, such as “we” may be construed, is that we, are a mere
“until the whole world will hears it.”
And acts on it. Haven’t heard that version before, thanks for posting happy Christmas from the kids, Erdla, and me.
du
If you sawr the devil looking right at you. lookin’ right at you… lookin’ at the bastard as he is so bad, and lookin’ at you right at you… right at you in your face, I wonder if you would think it was very nice…. I will tell you… no… it is not very nice. It is a very sorry time, when you come face to face to the ….. devil.
to see that horrid bastard is awful, but when then that he gets to get the advantage and heshe can take advantage…
I sawre the time when the devil was in charge, if any of you may will understand any of this.. Which you may not, because you have not the experience. but I was in that place where I can say… yes I can say.

I am an idiot
but I am putting in with the christians, That is mine.
christ has said all things that we shoul know, and we shoul know, and that is what we must know.
christ died for you/ He died for you, pardner….
I am lerning something here today, I did not Know… I am really a christian I think more than I knew that I was.
Happy Christmas Rusty, and all!
thanks.
We should be consoled, Rusty, that the whole world is watching and the Wikileaks documentation of the crimes of the criminal plutocracy is ringing outthere, on their mountaintops and in there streets. Especially in Europe and South America, where I think the resistence is growing and refortifying. We are not alone and the next few years of attempted austerity should bring the cauldron to a boil, maybe even here. In this way, perhaps Obama’s complicity will serve us better than they. As Bobby said, “you gotta serve somebody, it may be the devil or it my be he lord, but you gotta serve somebody.” In Jesus’s name, ahmen.
Edger would love that! Merry Christmas, Rusty.
Well, almost everywhere, he’s not in Congress, for example, but he should be. Merry Christmas, wendy.
Yes, very similar. Unfortunately, as we all know, the list of things that have never occurred to Pat Robertson is pretty long.
And a happy Christmas to you and your family, Dubhaltach.
Peace.
Happy Christmas, Elliott, and to everyone huddled around the campfires here at Valley Forge.
Spring is coming.
Have a good Christmas, mafr.
It’s encouraging, cbsunglass. Wikileaks is going to have an increasing impact as the secrets of the plutocracy and their hacks continue to be exposed, which is why they’re attacking Assange and Wikileaks with such malice. Dylan knows who they serve, so do we.
“So he was silenced. Arrested, put on trial, and executed.”
Not to minimize the crucifixion and death of the Messiah and hero, and of the initiates, past, present, and future, but as dark as the days are, I look to the resurrection. Just may take longer than three days…*g*
Rusty, light and blessings to you and everyone here. Hope you put all your writings together in a more durable form.
Words of wisdom from Teilhard de Chardin.
Yes, there’s a lot of redemption to seek and resurrecting to do, we’re going to need more than three days. :) Thank you, peony, light and blessings to you as well.
Hedges is brilliant and will be credited as seminal in the awakening of we, the oppressed.
Merry Christmas, Rusty.
Christ’s message of love and peace was meant for all of humanity, everyone longs for love and peace, which in a way makes everyone a Christian. I think the same can be said of most other religions, their core message of love and peace resonates with everyone.
He’s magnificent. Merry Christmas to you as well, malcontent.
Thanks Rusty. Makes me happy to read this.
You are most welcome, Mary. I hope you and your family are having a good Christmas.
Lately I have been thinking about the broken treaties, promises, and lies our government used to take this country from the Native Americans. Strangely many of us apparently assumed that they would never use theses weapons against citizens of the United States, patronizingly referred to as “the little people.” But the truth is that now they have turned these weapons on us, using the same strategies to take whatever they can, and give it to those who already have much more than they need.
I believe they underestimate the people. In whatever form this may happen, we will eventually triumph, for we are many and they are few.
We are willing to help, they are willing only to destroy. We have faith, hope and love. They have cynicism, greed, and hate. We care about each other and the world.
And God is on our side. “Fear not, for behold, I bring you glad tidings of a great joy which shall be to all the people.”
All the people, not the few powerful who seek to enslave us. God makes a way where there is no way.
Blessings and love to all of you,
Gabriele
Until the banksters, and the torturers, and the “murder by spreadsheet” insurance people, and the mongers of permanent war, and the greedy global corporations, and the corrupt pragmatic politicians who always fix it so they never have any choice except to do what’s wrong rather than what’s right, all get the Justice they so richly deserve.
And, we, the people, get back the fairness, freedom, and democracy that is ours by right!
Thanks Rusty for a great job, and Happy Holidays to you, and to everyone at FDL!
Manifest Destiny was oppression and so is Corporate Capitalism.
“We care about each other and the world.”
Yes we do.
Solidarity.
Blessings and love to you, Gabriele.
Fairness. Freedom. Democracy. Obama and his corporate masters are going to learn they aren’t just “abstract ideals.”
Recess is over. Lesson time is here.
Happy Holidays to you, letsgetitdone.
Great post. Thank you, Rusty.
Thank you, openhope. Season’s greetings.
