Too many New Year’s Eves will come and go before humanity drinks from that Cup of Kindness Robert Burns spoke of in his classic poem, Auld Lang Syne. When that day comes, it will be because people in this degraded world finally listened to writers, poets, singers and songwriters, who’ve been the conscience of humanity ever since the lies of the first kings ignited the first wars and four thousand years of killing for gold and power began on the ancient battlegrounds of the Middle East.
In Artists of Resistance, Howard Zinn emphasizes the critical importance of artists who communicate universal truths through poetry, music, and literature. They have always spoken truth to power, their voices are needed now more than ever, as shock doctrine capitalism intensifies and humanity itself is targeted for destruction. If we keep retreating, if we keep surrendering without a fight because fighting back might offend the criminals who are beating the hell out of us, all that is human within us will die, it will be gone forever, and the nightmare world of 1984 will become reality.
George Orwell . . .
Never again will you be capable of ordinary human feeling. Everything will be dead inside you. Never again will you be capable of love, or friendship, or joy of living, or laughter, or curiosity, or courage, or integrity. You will be hollow. We shall squeeze you empty and then we shall fill you with ourselves.
A corporate final solution on a global scale. The ultimate holocaust.
Chris Hedges . . .
We have been gradually disempowered by a corporate state that, as Huxley foresaw, seduced and manipulated us through sensual gratification, cheap mass-produced goods, boundless credit, political theater and amusement. While we were entertained, the regulations that once kept predatory corporate power in check were dismantled, the laws that once protected us were rewritten, and we were impoverished. Now that credit is drying up, good jobs for the working class are gone forever and mass-produced goods are unaffordable, we find ourselves transported from Brave New World to 1984. The state, crippled by massive deficits, endless war, and corporate malfeasance, is sliding towards bankruptcy. We are moving from a society where we are skillfully manipulated by lies and illusions to one where we are overtly controlled.
Too many people still believe the lies, too many are afraid to speak out, too many are still clinging to the illusion that what’s happened so many times before can’t happen here. Well it is happening here, and as it escalates, too many people will just accept it, they won’t resist and will turn their backs on those who do.
Resistance is a long, hard road to travel, but many men and women have traveled it before. Every mile of it. We won’t be on our own, we won’t have to find our way through the darkness alone, they’ve shown us the way . . .
Oppression must always be resisted, justice must always be defended, the truth must always be told, no matter what the cost. History teaches us that, the world’s great religions teach us that, the greatest poetry, literature, and music ever written teaches us that.
That lesson will be learned, it will be learned very well in the years to come. So keep the faith, keep telling the truth, it will finally be heard, it will finally be believed, it will set us all free. That Cup of Kindness will be passed among us, it will not be bought and sold, it will be shared, and all will drink from it. Corporate capitalism will be gone from this world, it’ll be as gone as the divine right of kings, it’ll be stone-cold dead and buried a mile deep in an unmarked grave on the dark side of the moon.

They’ve shown us the way.
Happy New Year, Rusty.
Rec’d.
Thanks, Edger, let’s hope 2011 is better than 2010 was. I want to hit REWIND and start the whole millennium over again.
Happy New Year, Rusty. Keep ‘Em Coming. Let’s make this the year for Justice!
I’m still try to find to doorway back to 1970. This century is a bit of a letdown, so far… ;-)
So glad we have you around to remind us of this, Rusty. And the video was lovely and inspiring. Good New Year to you, friend.
If your find it let me know, I’ll go back with you.
Happy New Year, letsgetitdone. Yes, justice in 2011. It’s been forgotten and never brought to mind. We need to remedy that.
If I don’t remind us, Edger will. :) It’s great to see him here.
Have a good New Year, wendy.
Peace and Quiet, everyone!
“I haven’t known peace and quiet for so long I can’t remember what it’s like.” –Bob Dylan.
I
Seconded: it IS great to see Edger here! ;o) (Hey, Edger!)
He’s everywhere, even in U2.
Wait . . . that’s The Edge.
But The Edge is hearing footsteps, and we know who’s footsteps they are.
Thanks, Rusty, wishing you and yours a happier 2011 ahead.
Wonderful. Thanks, Rusty, for this stirring recollection. Happy New Year…..and best hopes for all.
Thanks, Rusty. It’s not really the impossible dream if we work every day to not be overrun by the moneychangers. Keep the faith and keep writing. It’s needed. I appreciate all you do and say.
Forgot to say Happy New Year, Rusty.
Hope your life is filled with champagne and strawberries.
More good Rusty-ness!
Just off the cuff:
A cup of kindness, and its want,
A draught of goodness surely shan’t
Bankrupt a human’s wish for naught
But better than what we’ve currently got.
*clink!*
Thank you and Happy New Year, Dearie. We’re way overdue for a good year so maybe we’ll finally get one.
Either Janet Napolitano’s or Zombie Brain-eaters. Hmmm; maybe Edger won’t grok that there’s a difference………
Rusty: I try and read everything you post on FDL, and your words today are a picture-perfect example of why. Hats off to you, and happy new year.
“Be of good cheer, the military-industrial state will soon collapse. Meanwhile, we must do all in our power to oppose, resist, and subvert its desperate aggrandizements. As a matter of course. As a matter of honor” —Edward Abbey
“Determined people fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history.” –Gandhi
If we have more determination and more faith in ourselves, we can win this fight.
And a Happy New Year to you too, Twain. Champagne and strawberries for everyone, and a progressive president in 2012. I’d settle for that.
Robert Burns would drink to that, and so will I.
I hope you have a good New Year, Kelly, thank you for your friendship and encouragement.
Words of wisdom from Edward Abbey. Thank you, mojada, and Happy New Year to you as well.
He not busy being born is busy dying. The military-industrial state is busy dying, and the Left is busy being born. We will be heard from in 2011, and we’ll just keep getting stronger in the years to come.
Rusty, I read all your posts, I appreciate your style and I look forward to your insights. I am continually grateful for the high caliber of ideas and discussion from you and most everyone at the lake. May we together bring genuine peace and prosperity in the new year.
“May we together bring genuine peace and prosperity in the new year.”
Amen.
This is a great community, overflowing with writing talent, it’s a privilege to be here. Thank you, nonquixote.
Happy New Year, Rusty.
You’ve become the heart and soul of this place, a true inspiration for all of us and this diary is another example of your power to stir the memories and emotions into a potent stew of reflection and purpose.
Your presence, energy, and ideas enrich all of us and make us better.
Namaste, my friend.
Keep the faith. We’ll win in the end. I’ve seen our destiny in written in the stars and I can feel it in my blood. The tide is slackening and about to turn. When it does, we will no longer feel like we are manning a lonely outpost in some distant galaxy far far away. Go to the quiet place and listen to the heart beat strong and true. The best is yet to come and when it comes it will sweep aside the greed and selfishness that is slowly trying to kill us.
Thank you, Rusty.
Wishing many good moments to you and yours this new year.
Love the video. Thanks, Rusty.
Would like to offer Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler’s “Brothers in Arms”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2rx3IAEISA
On the eve of 2011, the U.S. is engaged in two wars, a covert war in Pakistan, maybe Iran, and who knows where else. These wars need to end. Therein lies the true national interest of the U.S. and the peace and security of the world.
“Someday you’ll return to your valleys and your farms,
and you’ll no longer burn to be brothers in arms.”
Every post here matters, every voice is being heard, we have the truth on our side and we’re going to tell it. FDL is going to rattle the walls of the Beltway in 2011. Thia New Year is going to be one to remember, my friend.
Thank you, openhope. Better days are coming for us all.
nice prose, or maybe poetry, Iiked the sound of it.
A haunting but beautiful song, thank you, peony.
It’s written in the starlight,
And every line on your palm,
We’re fools to make war,
On our brothers in arms.
Happy New Year, geoshmoe.
Great, as usual, Rusty. Every now and then, this piece of dialogue spoken by Ma Joad in Grapes of Wrath comes to mind and gives me a glimmer of hope:
“Rich fellas come up an’ they die, an’ their kids ain’t no good an’ they die out. But we keep a’comin’. We’re the people that live. They can’t wipe us out; they can’t lick us. We’ll go on forever, Pa, ’cause we’re the people.”
I am still a newbie but I join with all the others in appreciation for this.
Yes. It is the arts that will and give us directions to saving our humanity.. It’s no accident the corporates would seek to control them especially even the games we play. (Is anyone else as offended as I by the corporate take over of the sports events and where they are played?)
But there will always be those who cannot be bought.
Happy New Year All.
A story of ‘good government’. “Freeway Ricky Ross, Ronald Reagan, the CIA, the Nicaraguan Contras and crack cocaine. In the 1980′s (Dec. 1982) the Congress stopped funding Reagan’s right wing Contra guerrillas. So Reagan enlisted Oliver North and the CIA (William Casey, 81-87) to find another source of money. North and the CIA called on long time CIA assets Danilo Blandon and Norvin Meneses. These two coordinated the importation of cocaine from South America with founder and commander of the Contras Enrique Bermudez. Most of the cocaine shipments went to a small airport in Mena, Arkansas which then governor Bill Clinton (83-92) turned a blind eye toward. “Freeway” (101-South in LA) Ricky Ross was the CIA’s chief US distributor. The CIA’s profits from this capitalist venture were used to buy weapons (from Israel and Iran) and supply money to the Contras. Institutionalized racism at its finest. Peace
George?
I am a newbie here as well. I indeed am inspired by the words and thoughts of the many talent and brilliant minds here. I know that the world is changed one person at a time. Many thanks again to all who pour out their heart and soul. It is a privilege to be able contribute my 2 cents.
I see the problem as “capitalism as cancer”: a greed so commanding it devours itself.
From Howard Zinn: “…acting on what we feel and think, here, now, for human flesh and sense, against the abstractions of duty and obedience.”
And I promise only to post this site when we celebrate artists of resistance:
We have some excellent examples of resistance art here today.
Excellent post, rusty.
One book is missing from the video:
“Johnny Got His Gun” by Dalton Trumbo, a book I think is even more relevant to our current wars than “All Quiet on the Western Front.”
http://www.amazon.com/Johnny-Got-His-Dalton-Trumbo/dp/0806528478/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1293902656&sr=1-1
The Wizard of Oz
District 9
“George?”?? Peace
Any information on when this stopped? When Hegenfus was shot down? Still planes transporting narcotics are being found to have previous CIA ownership. If you’re buying coca related drugs are you supporting right wing dictators’ death grip on agrarian farmers?
I remember reading that in high school and being disturbed for months afterward. Quite an eye opener for a middle class and fairly naive Midwestern girl. I wonder if I’d have the same reaction to it today?

It hasn’t stopped. How do you suppose the CIA gets much of its covert money these days? Afghanistan. Peace
I just loved that piece, and a lot of other stuff Dire Straits recorded.
Supposedly we are actually involved in 6 wars.
Capitalism feasts on what we think and feel, and loves nothing more than people that abandon duty as an animating principle. His motives are pure, but his ethical philosophy is catnip for capitalism.
Happy New Year and thank you for the reminder!
Howard Zinn continues to be missed…”The great writers could see through the fog of what was called “patriotism,” what was considered “loyalty.”
Some people are waking up, but I fount this disturbing article on HuffPO…once again telling us how grateful we much be for Oilbomber and STFU and face “reality” of what a WONDERFUL preznit he is.
Obama’s Critics Owe Him a New Years (Fact-Based) Apology

I quoted alot from this post. thank you
Seems as if not many of the HuffPo commenters are buyng Mr Schaeffer’s horseshit.
Even one is too many. I’m getting so tired of being told I’m “unrealistic”. The bots are as bad as the trolls over there. Yet, I gird up my loins and sally forth!

Rusty,
You have reminded me of who I really am. I will start painting again today.
Happy New Year and thank you.
Marymac
Absolutely loved the Zinn link, Artists of Resistance. Hadn’t seen that before. My favorite ‘artist’s moment’ of 2010 was getting to see Roger Waters’ “Goodbye Blue Sky” with its stunning visuals of warplanes dropping their payloads of religion, consumerism and war upon a planet soon bathed in red. It was mindblowing and powerful to see on a 200 foot wide wall, but there are some videos out there which still give a good representation if you watch them on fullscreen mode:

Happy New Year and thanks for the inspirational touchstones in today’s posts.

Yay!!
Awesome. Thanks for the link.
Never forget the visual artists either. Remember Picasso’s “Guernica”?
Joseph Campbell called artists “the modern day shamans”
There’s a writer named Dan Simmons who I think exemplifies this shamanistic role. His Balck Hills is amazing and filled with clues.
Also, if you haven’t read it (or even if you have0 Stephen King’s “The Stand”…I just finished it (again) and it was so prophetic it gave me chills
Only King novel I’ve really liked and definitely the only one I’ve re-read.
The Stand is a great book. I think I’ve read it 4 or 5 times. Gave my last copy to the granddaughter and have ordered another one. Must have it on hand in case the notion strikes.
Anyone find this fireworks display in Dubai last night a little..creepy?

Yeeks, sorta like….a mushroom cloud?
Tallest building in the world? Your tax dollars at work America soon to be followed by your Social Security
I’m reading a chilling book now called the “Romanov Prophecy” by Steve Berry. which uses Russia as an example of what’s happening here. Creeeeeeepy. but VERY interesting.
I’m in love with his Dark Tower series. His opus magnum, I think. It took him years to write. Up there with Dickens, IMO
Dean Koontz is putting out spectacular stuff these days too.
“Breathless” is the on;y book I’ve ever put down and was breathless from
I’m eagerly awaiting his next in the “Frankenstein series”.
As you can tell, reading is my joy
I am a human being, as such I know deep in my heart that we don’t have to live or be in circumstance we see. There is another way, this one is a lie. I don’t profess to know a thing but this, there is another way. It begins with me and leads to you. In dark hours we must be light. Lift your glass and fill the world with peace from you to me. It may not seem so now in this pale world to prevail in truth and beauty but we will.
The best to all of you.
That is just beautiful.

My heart cries
In that crying
I laugh
My heart smiles
Past darkness and death.
I hadn’t listened to “Brothers in Arms” for awhile, but I made up for that by listening to it about 10 times today.
I hope you and your family have a good new year, msmolly.
One of the best novels ever written, IMO. “We Are the People” should be on the masthead at Firedoglake. Thank you, lefttown.
Thank you, TalkingStick. The corporate takeover of everything is ruining everything. Matt Tiabbi wrote a great piece about the corporate impact on sports, particularly the NFL and the fact that stadiums have become garish monuments to corporate power.
A typical example of the “good government” our “elected representatives” are providing us. Good post, thank you, Ymhotep.
Newbies are the future of FDL, thank you for joining us, popyeye99.
Your post gave me hope, something which is all too easy to lose in these deeply troubled times.
Bless you.
Rusty, congrats on being front-paged.
It’s devouring itself and everything else in sight. Other than that, capitalism is a wonderful system.
Thank you for the link, TomThumb.
Yes we do, I hope everyone gives the art diaries the attention they deserve.
Thank you, SouthernDragon. “Johnny Got His Gun” should have been in there, along with “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien and many others as well. I wanted to use the “Dances With Wolves” theme music, which is only about two-and-a-half minutes long, so I couldn’t feature many of the artists and works that fully deserved to be featured.
Happy New Year to you as well, speakingupnow. Howard Zinn is missed indeed, he saw through the fog, unlike so many historians who don’t even try. They just write about the fog.
Schaeffer: “President Obama’s Lefty critics look more and more like petulant teenagers who are too small to admit that they are wrong.”
The bullshit never stops, the renowned “journalists” of the corporate media just keep shoveling it out there, and then high-five each other for their consummate professionalism. Thank you for speaking out at HuffPo, Kassandra
And Peace and Love to Jane Hamsher on this New Year’s Day.
Paint the starry, starry night, Marymac. Happy New Year to you and your family.

Colours changing hue,
Morning fields of amber grain,
Weathered faces lined in pain,
Are soothed beneath the artists’ loving hand.
Whoa, that’s a powerful video, thank you, jeffc. Seeing it on a 200 foot wide wall must have been an amazing experience.
Very creepy. That went past surreal into territory there isn’t even a word for yet.
You are an artist of resistance, Maddy. Thank you.
Thanks Rusty!
A lifetime’s worth of wisdom in only 15 words. Artists will save humanity, they will redeem us if we heed their words. Thank you, Maddy.
Thank you, marblex. The truth will set us free, we have to tell it and keep telling it.
It is very much appreciated. Thank you, Twain, and thank you to the FDL editors.
I hope you and your family have a good New Year, captjjyossarian.
Peace.
Thank you, Rayne, I hope you and your family have a good New Year. I’m grateful for everything you and the editors, frontpagers, and diarists at FDL/MyFDL have done to make this the best progressive website on the Internet.
We’re not in Kansas anymore. Wherever we are, it’s not on any map.
I love the Dark Tower books too. I’m on my fourth trip through them, just finishing “Wizard and Glass” with “Wolves of the Calla” coming up next.
You and Rusty inspire me Mary. I have been trying to get back to painting for the past 3 years. I will goad you if you will me. :-)
we are all in this together..it’s so simple. Thanks for the post
Thanks..we are all in this together.
Deal!
Happy New Year to all. Rusty, I am so grateful for FDL and for your beautiful writing. It is so comforting to have a place to come to where there is a sense of belonging and of being with people who understand. Thanks to all of you.
Happy New Year, Gabriele, thank you for your friendship and support.
Well done! Happy New Year!
I’m glad I visited FDL to read this on invite of wendydavis. I suspect I’ll be back in his New Year as I continue to fight the good fight, and I’ll be looking to read more from you and others who inspire us. Thanks for this!
