Good morning, did you know there’s a crucial conference on pollution going on in Doha? You wouldn’t if all you read is the U.S. news. The end of Kyoto Protocols is approaching, which will be the halt of all the international cooperation ever reached on carbon emissions. As dire as that may sound, it has not produced any effort to strengthen controls of our climate.
The U.S had rejected the Kyoto Protocol the first time around because it didn’t impose any binding commitments on major developing countries like China and India– and China is now the world’s No. 1 carbon emitter. The U.S and other Western countries insist that that be changed. They want a treaty in which everybody has to make binding pledges to reduce their emissions. The U.S., in fact, refuses to sign any treaty unless China also cuts its emissions.
China and other developing countries, however, want to maintain the status quo.
Of course, Doha, Qatar, is itself an off choice for the conference, as its emissions level is itself overwhelming.
Doha’s skyscrapers, vast shopping malls, its lavish apartments and swanky hotels are among the most energy-inefficient in the world. Each Qatari is responsible for nearly 50 tonnes of carbon emissions a year. That compares with 17 for the US, 1.4 for India and 0.1 for Uganda. Meanwhile, scientists have warned that on current form, the world will be in for between 4C and 6C of warming.
Such a joker, that U.N. Even when there are controls against practices such as illegal logging, as in Brazil, violations are hard to prosecute. There, falsification of papers is routine.
Circuitious routes and falsified papers appear to be part of the method used by Russia to arm Syria’s war in documents released by Anonymous last week.
“It’s getting to Syria by the back door,” says Hugh Griffiths, an arms trafficking expert at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), which operates an air-trafficking surveillance project on behalf of the European Union. Griffiths, who says the leaked flight plan appears to be genuine, sees it as the latest step in Russia’s effort to repair and then deliver Assad’s fixed-up helicopters by any means necessary.
The killing of its own people by Syria’s government is just good business to the arms industry.
That industry has come to DR Congo, as M23, the rebel force, has taken over Goma.
Kinshasa and the UN have called on M23 to withdraw from Goma.
However, the rebel fighters seem to be on a roll.
Their control of Goma has given them a dangerous sense of confidence. They are now advancing on the town of Bukavu, more than 200km from Goma, and recruiting in every village and town they capture.
The government forces are overwhelmed, far from any power center and dismally trained.
In developed countries, obstacles to economic progress are presented by the ‘troika’ of ‘the European Central Bank (ECB), the IMF and the European Union. Their main problem is not profligate government spending, as fans of data everywhere have long known; the problem is an imbalance in relative prices between the crisis countries and Germany and other northern countries.’
Dean Baker presents a few possible ways to get around the resistance to ‘inflation’ that economic powers fear ‘ with the same vehemence as fundamentalist Christians in the United States resist the theory of evolution. Their view of the danger of moderate rates of inflation will not be changed by evidence.’
In Egypt, a court condemned producers of that offensive film to death.
An Egyptian court has sentenced seven Egyptian Copts and one American pastor to death, despite all of the defendants living outside the court’s jurisdiction. The team of eight were convicted on charges related to the anti-Islam film, ‘Innocence of Muslims’, which sparked chaos across the Muslim world.
An outbreak of silliness has made a place for the ‘gangnam style’ throughout the world.
Psy - short for Psycho, real name Park Jae Sang - made the original as a take-off on the flashy, pretentious, fashion and celeb-driven wealthy of Seoul.
Now the celebs and the fashionable of the world have appropriated Gangnam as some deeply thought artistic and political message.
Well, last I heard, it’s South Korea’s tourism authorities who are laughing all the way to the bank, and those wannabes living in Gangnam are getting just the kind of global attention they’ve craved.
Profits are soaring for many involved. The rest of us can enjoy the verve, and glitz. As this year of crises draws down, we can at least dance to the sound of its finale.
Never.give.up.

Good morning, the coffee’s just brewed.
Mods Cleanup on myFDL sidebar please.
Morning Ruth
We’ll never get anywhere with climate change as long as so many political contributors do not want us to.
If China and India were to agree to binding limits today, ObamaLLP would find another reason not to sign. A reason that has nothing to do with political influence, you can be sure.
From a practical point, it’s too late anyway. We’re going to have to manage what we’ve done.
Boxturtle (The Manhattan seawall will be impressive, no?)
They were busy little cretins last night in spamland. Yep, been over there doing flagging.
They’re already on it, I’m told. I spent several minutes flagging everything evil I could find, hopefully that will help them out.
Boxturtle (Spammers are worse than republicans, though not by much)
When I despair of the state of our climate and the damage we’ve done, I often warm myself with the thought of Wall Street under water.
Historically, the U.S. has not accepted limits that ignore the role of China, including Kyoto.
Good morning Ruth, and thank you for the links.
The European Union’s fiscal problems rival those of the United States. It seems that either the MOTU over there aren’t as good at managing the media, or that the general population of the EU are just smarter than we are.
I’m leaning toward the latter.
It popped up right about the same time as OE here because I had just refreshed the page two minutes earlier and it was not there yet. Likely capitalist operatives seeking to subvert Marxist theory espoused at the Diner. ;-)
It is tough to criticize the Russians for sending helicopters to Syria while ObamaLLP ships arms to Israel for use in Gaza.
I wonder if ObamaLLP will be able to get Iraq to block the flights? I’m betting not.
I think it more likely the copters will be targeted on the ground.
Boxturtle (with ABSOLUTELY NO connection to the CIA or JSOC)
Beachfront property, coming soon to the block near you.
It’s the US’s refusal to take actions that might limit the productivity of industry without China doing the same. US MOTUs are concerned that their businesses will take a hit, but their Chinese counterparts will not.
It’s disgusting, really. A race to oblivion.
I wonder what kind of lifeforms will emerge from our warmer earth, after we are gone?
It’s also probably something to do with long experience as serfs.
At least it’ll make the drive to the coast shorter…
I think about that, then I think of Venice and banksters sailing their Yachts through the “streets” of NYC.
Boxturtle (If you think it’s tough to park your 10ft Rolls, Imagine your 300ft yacht)
On the plus side, it’ll create a boom in the US’s gondola operators’ job market.
Undermining our creds as underconsumers, what will they think of next? Marx t-shirts with glitter?
Good Morning, Ruth and All
Good reading today, Ruth. You’ve done another superb job.
As this year of crises draws down, we can at least dance to the sound of its finale.
You’re quite the poet.
Lots of pockets, no doubt. Marsupials are quite sweet.
Watering the lawn will be out the window.
Yes, and IMO that’s a correct position. But I also think it’s a convenient excuse in this case.
There’s too much money in carbon, too many influential countries dependent on carbon sales for anything more effective than an unenforceable promise to pass.
I think the way to beat it is to make electric cars work. I need a 300mi range, a reasonably short recharge time at a highway station, and battery life.
Boxturtle ($.06 per KWH is a lot better than 3.65/Gal)
Now that twinkies are gone, methinks the things that will survive the coming apocalypse are cockroaches, Jeeps, and payday lenders.
Marsupials will need pockets for their keys and their wallets.
Love the stripey shirts!
Obama is too busy advertising his $2000 per family hit if we do not
agree to the Great Betrayal. Climate change is dead to this
administration.
Good morning pups. Thanks for the post and host, Ruth.
Good morning everyone.
Thank you for the post Ruth.
Thanks, I do what I can. Too much of the Danse Macabre about the times, for my taste.
When electrics are price-point competitive with Hyundai or Kia you’ll see them take off.
I’m for mass transportation, myself.
That’s what I think as well JC.
As the great and wise Turtle of Box said upthread, it’s too late anyway. We’re going to have to live with what we’ve done.
Oh, by the way, I forgot to mention –
I’m currently in the process of averting the prophesied end (curse you Mayans!) and saving the world.
If you’re all still here in December 22nd, you’re welcome.
I’ll accept gifts of money, exotic cars, and property as compensation.
You mean the truth will set you free but it will piss you off first?
It’s a fine line we have to walk, staying happy and healthy and the truth pissing us off.
Good morning everyone. I love this post, Ruth. Even without following the links — which I will do — it’s just interesting reading.
I suspect when Kit gets in, he’ll kill all the spam. I think that’s usually around 9 EST, when he puts us on the MyFDL front page.
Note that this is something we can do, and it ought to be a good first step. I don’t see all the bad intentions we’re supposed to fear, myself, but am like most here a low user of excesses.
Just invite us to your next party when you smoke some more meat!
It might also have to do with the massive upsurge in US coal exports in general and specifically to China. Lot of money there, too. And it reduces the trade deficit.
Boxturtle (I think we’re exporting more coal than we use)
I’m all about the Rapture, and just ask the believers please to leave the keys in the locks.
I’ve read that somewhere as well. IIRC, I’ve also read that we’re approaching the same level with natural gas.
We’re becoming an energy exporter again. You’re probably right. This means no change.
Hmm, seems to work. But it’s just not really free. I’ll keep my pockets.
Yes. I’d like to see a Manhattan Project type effort to get us the rest of the way there. All we really need is a decent method of storing electricity.
Boxturtle (Thinks energy dependence is every bit as dangerous to America as nazi germany was)
Thanks, too much material, really. I do appreciate Psy’s sending glitz, too.
Flagging it makes you feel better, but the spam will go away, as you say, when it’s time.
There’s an open invitation for anyone here to stop by anytime.
Good morning msmolly.
On the ‘i love this’ side of the ledger this morning –
It’s so foggy outside that I can’t see 3 houses down the street. Visibility is below 100 feet or so. Fog is so dense that sound is dying strangely.
I love it when it’s like this.
I finally gave up flagging, since they’re popping up as fast as I flag them.
The boys’ choir that walked out on its audience.
My major source of disgust is that we subsidize the drilling and exploration, it’s definitely time to end that.
Yes, the more mass transit we do, the better off we are. But mass transit won’t work for everything, we’ll always have to allow for personal transportation.
The bikeways around here are really nice, located on abandoned railroad rightofways. I sometimes wonder if letting all that transportation move to trucks won’t end up being one of the dumbest things humanity did in the last century.
Boxturtle (Would love a decent train between Xenia and Columbus. But I’d be the only passenger)
No fog here north of you, and I love the fog, too.
Manufacturing in my region includes a multinational, marine based manufacturing firm which builds and upgrades those 300 foot yachts and employs quite a few extremely talented craftspeople. It is a lineage of workers who’s parents built ships in WWII and who now are still building Navy warships of the latest style.
Corporatewiki reports that:
I heard a bit on my car radio (prolly NPR) that said electric cars aren’t selling, they represent a tiny fraction of auto sales, but car companies keep making them because of the California emission regulations. Sorry, I can’t recall the numbers.
Oh, dear. Thanks.
my fellow do gooders as opposed to evil doers,go to the store buy 1 pouch or can of cat food…and send it to Dick Durbins Washington or Illinois address…. THE GAME IS ON!….this ferker has proposed cuts to the safety net.on MYFDL the 1 million can answer to the Vichy Dems
oh and GOOD MORN
Unfortunately, I’m not personally able to give an outlet to such talents, but glad that they’re persisting.
I’ve noticed that once some idea is mention, the next refresh of the page brings up the appropriate ad for it in the sidebar. Especially noticed this on Food Sundays right down relating to baked goods or stir-fry bringing up bakeware or woks.
Oh, yeah. We shouldn’t be subsidizing carbon based energy in any way. In fact, we should be taxing it!
Boxturtle (If carbon or nuclear had to pay it’s actual cost, we’d already BE solar)
Actually, we’re not supporting any particular consumption here, but feel free to do that yourself.
Watching a beautiful story on ESPN about a young man with autism who has found himself a place as kicker for his high school football team. The repetition and muscle memory involved in the kicking motion soothe him.
He can kick 45 – 50 yard field goals as a high schooler.
He kicked a game winner this season against his team’s state rivals with seconds left on the clock.
Shedding tears here.

Senate’s No. 2 Democrat calls for cuts to social safety net
By LISA MASCARO AND CHRISTI PARSONS | Tribune Washington Bureau
Posted on Thursday, November 29, 2012
WASHINGTON — A top Democrat pressured fellow progressives Tuesday to consider long-term changes to the social safety net, even as the party digs in for a fight to save Medicare and other government programs from deep budget cuts.
As closed-door talks continue with the hope of a year-end deal, President Barack Obama will travel to a Pennsylvania toy store this week to pressure Congress to extend the expiring tax cuts for the middle class, while letting those for the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans expire. Republicans are similarly taking their proposal of tax breaks for all on the road.
At the same time, Sen. Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Democrat, tapped his ties to the liberal wing of the party to urge a broader deficit deal in 2013 that would include trims to Medicare and other entitlement cuts.
“We can’t be so naive to believe that just taxing the rich will solve our problems,” said Durbin, speaking at the influential liberal group called Center for American Progress. “Put everything on the table. Repeat. Everything on the table.”

Google ads, no doubt, and I get it on my email too, gets downright funny.
That’s the advertising software FDL runs (may actually be more than one). Nothing nefarious going on. I don’t see the ads because I run AdBlock Plus.
They’re quite right. There’s good reasons for that. Low range, long recharge times, EXPENSIVE battery replacement (I think it’s every 20K or so miles), uncomfortable, small, no snow ability at all, and I doubt I could fit a weeks work of groceries.
All solvable problems.
Boxturtle (There’s a working 7200v setup that’ll recharge in about 5-10 minutes)
I’ve opted out of the ads on Gmail, but they keep showing up, just a single line at the bottom of the window.
OH, and totally off topic — I watched Hunger Games (DVD) last night. I’m still mulling it over.
There is a solution.
Firefox offers a simple add-on called AdBlock Plus.
I haven’t seen an ad since I downloaded it.
On the same subject but different, I was appalled that the minute BBC covered a report on the relation of autism to proximity to heavy air pollution, an Instant rejection popped up, in the form of a scientist whose funding sources were not identified, insisting that the connection had not been physically proven by long term studies.
I logged on just before 7:00 and was about to look through the recent diaries and *poof* just before EO came up on the next refresh. “Some people have the neove,” -Ralph Crandon
What is the source/title, Kris? My grandson has autism, and his mother (my DIL) is Executive Director of the Indiana Autism Society. I would love to pass along a link if you have one.
So, can you tell me why I get so many Looking to hook up with a Single Christian ads?
I saw that on FB :)
The highlight of that film was Woody Harrelson.
I read all the books before seeing the movie. Good story concept, good writing, easy reading, but nothing great. I would recommend them, however. They were fun. And a very serious political statement about the current US, methinks.
I think you have to pay attention to that, Ruth. As you can see by my previous comment, I am closer than many to that, and a lot of the stuff circulating about autism is bunkum. One of the latest is vaccinations as a cause — they aren’t.
The trouble I have with using ad blocking is that I am able to resist, myself, and find it interesting to see stuff on the side. I even have found useful information.
I think it would have been better to have read the books first, also. Just as I read all of the “Girl with the…” books before I saw the three films (Swedish versions).
Here’s the video segment on ESPN’s website.
I actually thought of your grandson while I was watching. I enjoy your updates about him on fb :)
The cockroaches will be fine, just as they are now, the ones that scurry on the ground at least. The ones in the halls of power will be able to insulate themselves from the effects for a while and then not so much.
Talking about ships brought up Carnival Cruise Lines and gee, I almost forgot to make my reservation. I mostly am not bothered and I click on them sometimes because I think FDL gets revenue.
Because you’re so cute!
It would seem that industry is a step ahead of us on matters like these. They pay people more money to refute information that would damage their business. I suppose that’s just another expression of the free market.
Are those on netflix? I’ve read all those books (oldnslow and cbl got them for me last Xmas) but I haven’t seen anything but the American version of the first film.
Thanks, Kris. He is one bright little guy, and thanks to a lot of therapy, seems mostly pretty normal. When I was visiting last weekend, he sat with me and showed me his Channukah wish list (my DIL is Jewish) and used my iPad to show me pictures of everything. Then he made a list, numbered, in order of preference.
I seem to recall that he had some touch sensitivity issues? Was that the case?
I don’t know if they are, Kris, but I suspect so. The Performing Arts Center on campus where I volunteer showed all three of them, so that’s where I saw them. They’re excellent…but it is better to have read the books first.
to all those who can botther themselves

And I did like the strong female lead (both the casting AND especially the story that featured the strong female).
His “ties to the liberal wing of the party” just got snapped. We need to respond to this fast, before he thinks he has any support whatsoever.
Dear Sen. Durban,
Re: You recent statement on safety net cuts.
SCREW YOU!
Longer letter to follow.
Sincerely,
Boxturtle
Well I teared up, sister.
That’s a nice thing to say, but, I don’t have a cam on my computer, and there’s a reason for that. :)
Molly, did you watch the video I linked to at 44? Thought you and your Vienna Boys Choir concert the other day.
I see a few on SOME websites, because of they way they are embedded and presented prevents the AdBlock Plus from blocking them. But I escape most of them. It also seems to block commercials between video segments (like UP with Chris Hayes or Rachel Maddow).
They are :) Including an extended edition of all three films that tops out at just over 8 hours. Sweet.
Wow!
Me too. All three times I watched it.
something is wrong with MyFDL diaries i did a million Can Delivery post that didnt post, some ass is selling French handbags and trashed up the place…just in time for Xmas,SCROOGE DURBIN
Yes, they’re called “sensory issues” and they pop up now and then. He often takes of his shirt or shoes, and there are some foods he won’t eat because of the texture.
And the three Swedish “Girl with the…” movies are on Netflix. I just looked.
Need a hankie? I loved some of the facial responses from the audience.
Please don’t repeatedly link to your post in the comments of others. Once is enough. -myFDL Editor
She really was great, and continues to be throughout the books, but Collins felt the need to embroil her in a sappy love triangle, which was frustrating for me.
Felt kind of Twilight-y. I don’t like that kind of shit.
Okay sadlyyes, you know I’m with you on direct action and activism, and I think this is a great thing, but spamming someone’s comment thread with your diary is NOT cool. Please stop.
the MYFDL is spammed, the word needs to get out,are you in or out? that is the question?
You are not alone with those and I am thinking we’ve been targeted as being in dire need of redemption of our souls.
If it involves you shitting on a comment thread here at the morning post that we’ve taken a few weeks now to build, I’m out.
Please act like an adult and have some respect. The editors will fix the spam issue on the sidebar and you can repost your diary in a bit.
Yes, I had seen it earlier. Thanks. It is a powerful statement. I also thought of the “Farewell” Haydn symphony #45. I had to look it up. Here’s the wiki entry:
It was written for Haydn’s patron, Prince Nikolaus Esterházy, while he, Haydn and the court orchestra were at the Prince’s summer palace in Eszterháza. The stay there had been longer than expected, and most of the musicians had been forced to leave their wives back at home in Eisenstadt, so in the last movement of the symphony, Haydn subtly hinted to his patron that perhaps he might like to allow the musicians to return home: during the final adagio each musician stops playing, snuffs out the candle on his music stand, and leaves in turn, so that at the end, there are just two muted violins left (played by Haydn himself and the concertmaster, Alois Luigi Tomasini). Esterházy seems to have understood the message: the court returned to Eisenstadt the day following the performance.
ya know,i dont need SS,ths aint about me….so if you cant be botherd ,just scroll by
Yeah, I thought that was pretty lame, too. I sorta thought parts of the movie were stupid, while others were gripping.
I haven’t seen or read Twilight stuff. I have an aversion to vampire stories.
They might be wasting their money, heh.
Thanks, this happens sometimes.
You’re not going anywhere, buster. Don’t give it the power.
PLease follow your own advice.
discussed at the beginning of this thread, thanks for linking to your post.
Yes,the audience was taking it very seriously. I’m glad for that. They looked very thoughtful.
What a world we live in. I just finished reading Raj Patel’s books. The man is brilliant. He’s advocating for real democracy. He’ll be here this weekend.
Sadly, I am happy to support your action.
I am just as angry as many about this well predicted sellout and I am certain that many of us will back your request.
Where’s (((katymine’s))) list when you need it.
And it’s fixed.
Boxturtle (I’m supposed to say I love the smell of fried spammer in the morning, but I really don’t)
Thanks. I’ll be here.
For those who are unfamiliar the late katymine used to publish toll free numbers for all the congressional offices.
Never. Give. Up.
Yeah. At the time of the link spamming here, sadly’s diary was number 4 on the rec list anyway. Don’t know what the spastic posting was about.
Oh, I didn’t mean he’d be here at FDL. He’ll be here in Austin.
katymine’s list is on one of my dead computers. And, yes I still think of her from time to time. A dear soul.
You can get those numbers here.
In that case, I’ll miss him. :)
Try
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/members
Not a new event. Sad to say.
Oh, good, you got one list up quickly.
I know. I just got a bit territorial. Over Easy is the house that we’ve built. I don’t like anybody slinging poop at it.
Just call me Speedy.
oh how i miss her (((katymine))) (((SD)))…….these congresscritters are teh cruel, and thank you muchly.you once asked me to post about my reflections of healthcare in France and i said that these pups wouldnt be interested, well this will be my last foray into helping the causes….much respect to you, keep up the good fight!and good luck and good health!
I should add – even if I like the smell of the particular poop that is being slung.
(this will go down as one of my greatest metaphorical achievements)
your house…get a GRIP
I feel eggzactly the same way. Never Give Up, honeybunny.
You will notice that usually anyone slinging poop here will insist it’s in your best interests.
Oh sadly. I feel like you’re taking this personally. Think about it this way…
If I went over to your current diary and started posting links to this Over Easy post, say 3 or 4 times, you’d be pretty upset, wouldn’t you? If I started berating people in the comments for not reading the Over Easy post? If I accused them of being uncaring because they hadn’t read it?
I’ve got a pretty firm grip. Seems that you’re lacking perspective here.
You are being rude, and this is hardly a place for that either. Flagged.
I recommend flagging.
I did. Pains me, because sadlyyes is a regular commenter and valued contributor (at least in my eyes). This today has just been out of line.
i wouldnt mind AT ALL….this is NOT about me, my post,my idea,my solution, if someone else has a better iea go for it,I WILL SUPPORT IT!!im trying to help those less fortunate than i ,like i always do.IM TRYING TO HELP…if nobody else wants to do it…so be it…
So, how bout the Dodgers?
Ruth,Echan and i have had several discussions on your nasty treatment of me,i coose to ignore you, from now on
Thanks for the great post, Ruth, and for the lively chat from eveyyone and for the link to McClatchy from sadly.
I just forwarded that link to the county Dem board members who have already stated that there is nothing political for their membership to do until 2014 now that Obomba has been successfully re-elected. I claim to be non quixotic but still throw shit at brick walls on occasion.
There’s a lot of folks around here who’s s**t don’t stink. Just ask them.
Boxturtle (*rim shot*)
It’s not fun to watch someone melt down. Ruth wrote a great post and you have trolled this thread.
Please do. Now would be a good time to start.
I just watched a rerun of last night’s Jon Stewart. Nice interview with Neil Young who has a book out Waging Heavy Peace. I know what I want for xmas.
Thank you Kris, and I agree.
By the way, while I was on my Docent shift yesterday, I got FDL on the computer they provide, and up popped a Lakeside Diner post from October 3rd (which I obviously had been reading/commenting from that computer). It was the one where SouthernDragon said he was going to the VA on Saturday for his chest.
Made me sad all over again. I think he’d like what we’ve constructed here in his honor.
And now back to your regularly scheduled programming.
Climate change is a bitch, huh?
Oo! Good Idea! I’ll bet my local Dem party would be interested. I’ll print it and drop it off, Local HQ is on my way home.
Boxturtle (Dunno how it will be received. Blue Dogs bark a lot, ya know)
Glad you found it of interest, and as you note, I am about promoting positive interests.
I think he’d enjoy it, too. A big part of me thinks he’d even enjoy the troll swatting on occasion.
Are you channeling BoxTurtle? LOL.
Takes me back, too. We all are grateful for what he got together.
He set a great example of tolerance, and I do really respect his precedents.
Boy, I hope so. If I can channel him successfully, I’ll be a better man for it.
(Am I doing this right?)
Good morning all. Sadly, I missed Ruth’s wonderful postnhost this morning. Thank you, Ruth.
As I commented on your diary, you have no clear statement of what we are supposed to do. Cans of what? Video cameras? I don’t get it.
Perhaps you can edit your diary to make your proposal a little clearer?
Nope. You have to sign your name and put your comment in parentheses. But then, that is HIS signature.
Doing great. Thanks.
Printing it up might be a better approach, I have a feeling that many of them have blocked my email address by now, not wanting to their themselves away from neither FOX news nor David Brooks nor the latest lines from OFA.
Yeah, I’ll let that be his. I’m not cool enough for it anyway.
I should come up with my own thing, like sprinkling *BAM* into my comments…
Thanks, you are always welcome. Glad you stopped in.
We’re still here. :O)
Is it any warmer, or are you still working on your turtle impression?
(obviously should have read the comments before jumping in)
Awww. Thanks *BAM* Ruth!
That’s not working.
Cute.
i did and thank you, very busy here with sick critters, really dont have time for this,Minny had Cancer surgery last night,The big lab knocked over the fences, and let 4 others out ,its 24 degrees, and hand feeding 2 kittens whose mother died Im swamped!
Not just the links Ruth, but your take on them is most important.
(tear instead of their @152, sorry)
And the beautifully flipped eggs in that picture has me remembering that I have yet to break my fast.
About 7 degrees warmer than yesterday but I drove my son’s car this morning. I think he told me to take it because it needed gas. (heavy sigh) Oh well.
Thanks, you are good to spend time here – but hate for you to go hungry, and my picture making it worse.
Funny thing about kids and cars. Sonny’s car has been out of commission for about three weeks now and he’s been taking my van to school. Funny thing is, when he was driving His Car he put gas in it, but I’m the one putting gas in My Car.
You know, we don’t really care, do we? We love them As Much As There Is.
If he is, I want royalties.
However, it IS possible he has suddenly reached a higher level of Enlightenment and thus would naturally format his posts more like mine.
Boxturtle (Arrogance can be fun)
BTW – msmolly, I’m about 40 minutes into the first Swedish film and it is FAR better than the American version. That’s saying a lot; the American version was pretty damn good.
Or not (Most likely scenario)
sorry, never can resist a bad joke.
Going hungry, not to catfood yet, but I joined some friends for a traditional WI, all-you-can-eat pan fried walleye supper last night at a backwoods restaurant, full moon reflecting off the little inland lake, where the proprietors are serving some of the best food in the area.
Having seen all three of the Swedish versions, I have no interest in seeing the American version. But that’s mostly because I’ve read all three books and seen all three movies, so it would be like a big rerun.
No fair! That intentionally makes me crave some, too. Need directions for next time I get to WI.
I love walleye. I get it from the fish vendor in the Farmer’s Market when he has it. Yum. I also have become a big fan of trout.
I wish we could eat fish in my house. My wife is a 5 year old when it comes to seafood. She won’t touch it. My 7 year old daughter won’t either.
When half the family won’t eat it, it doesn’t go on the table. :(
That’s too bad, when it’s so good for us. Maybe you could slip in some fish tacos, or even casseroles that get that taste acceptable. vewwy qwiatly.
The specials (all-you-can-eat) are only run in the off season, seasonal tourists are mostly out of the loop. Residents meet when one gets immediate seating most times. Braving cold and snow to get there and all that. Haha!
I actually got a ride with someone and enjoyed two tall WI craft beers with the meal and some lively local progressive political action was discussed.
I might be able to pass off tacos. I could tell my little one that it’s chicken if I season heavily enough.
The only problem I see there is that we grocery shop as a family every week. It’d be tough to sneak fish into the basket :)
Now I see we’re up on the front page at MyFDL, and hope you all have a good time. I have an errand that must be done, will check in later.
Ideal way to spend the dinner time. One of these days, maybe.
That could make it harder. I’ll bet you find a way.
Thanks so much Ruth for doing your part here at Over Easy, and for doing it So Well.
Thanks, it’s a pleasure to have such buds around, and I’ll be back in later. Please enjoy.
Would calling it, “Chicken of the Sea,” work for you?
Just fix fish sometime and don’t call it anything but, “supper is ready, anyone hungry?”
PS, you mentioned yesterday, I think, that you had steak for TDay. So, since Chris got home last night, we barbequed some real nice steaks and had potatoes and salad. Too bad Spuds wasn’t nearby. I think he would have like it. Okay, maybe not the salad. :)
Another point is eating seafood from the gulf oil spill.
My son loves shrimp as do I but we only are buying farm raised from
Thailand(as if its any better).
And now we are hearing about acidic oceans destroying ecosystems of shellfish. (maybe better enjoy it while we can)
Now fresh water walleye is another matter. (Makes me want to head
up to Boulder Junction WI and catch a few.)
I love shrimp maybe more than any other seafood. Also raw oysters on the half shell. Two things you must watch carefully where they come from.
I started eating a lot more fish this summer when I was trying my no-statins experiment. I wasn’t particularly overweight, but the diet (didn’t really feel like a diet) and my bike riding took off about 14 lbs. Now I have to struggle through the winter to keep it off.
Brief warmup this weekend, may get in one last bike ride.
Hey now. I eat salad, I don’t like dressing so I eat them plain. I just don’t eat beans and f*****g peas.
What kind of bike do you ride? I think you’ve inspired me to get one and start getting back in shape.
Mr. Is a 5 year old when it comes to fish, too. Also won’t touch he stuff. Emphatically. The worst part is that he’s taught the boys by example that fish is not acceptable. The only time I get seafood is the rare occasion that we eat out.
Sadface. That’s my situation exactly. My younger daughter is as picky about food as her mom is. My older daughter, though, has taken after me. She’ll try anything and has a broad range of tastes.
This would have been Richard’s 69th birthday. I miss him.
Several windows open here while transcribing quotes from a video of our seldom publicly heard, Scott Walker team player, state Assembly Rep’s listening session, held recently in the one R stronghold city in our district.
Unfortunately, I think there are still fish consumption advisories for particular, “fresh water,” lakes pertaining to mercury and a few other pollutants. One meal a month for adults and less than that for children is the way they are usually written. Walker’s DNR has removed formerly up to date air pollution advisories from the site which used to let people with lung problems, know when to stay indoors, so what’s left up there, actually serving public health interests, might be questionable at this juncture, too.
Mine is a Raleigh Venture 4.0, a “hybrid” comfort bike. You should probably get a good bike shop to help you select one that suits your size and the kind of riding you’ll be doing. My riding is nearly all on paved bike paths or city streets, so I didn’t want an off-road “mountain” bike.
I went to the bike shop and told them I wanted a comfortable bike but not a “granny” bike. They took me into their parking lot and let me try out a couple, and then recommended the Raleigh. You could also look at a Trek. They’re around $350 or so I think.
Raleigh Venture
Oh msmolly, I was weeping once already today, but sincere thanks for mentioning that so significant a date, to remember.
I have an app on my iPhone called “Seafood Watch” published by the Monterey Bay Aquarium, that gives info on mercury and other contaminants in fish, and also sustainability of the fish, and recommends alternatives.
For walleye, it says, “Environmental Defense Fund has issued a consumption advisory for walleye due to high levels of mercury and PCBs.” That doesn’t mean you can never eat it, just that you should limit consumption.
However, walleye has recovered from overfishing ad it is a good alternative to other kinds of fish.
P.S. My Raleigh is also on the heavy side. I’ve been thinking of getting a lighter-weight bike, but hate the thought of shelling out another chunk of money when this bike is perfectly good.
I will listen to prof. Wolff to remember our very missed SouthernDragon today. No war but class war. Never.Give.Up.

This summer I rode my bike for over 2000 miles for the purpose of getting back into decent shape. On Thanksgiving I took the my bike out for a spin in less than ideal conditions. My family was not thrilled with my post turkey ride. I fear they agree with the Dad in Breaking Away.
Thanks, msmolly, did not know his birthday, and hope the date can be kept with a lot of respect for the memories he left.
This suggest maybe some salmon, with a lot of smoking maybe. Starting out without much taste of fish, imho.
For Richard.
As tempting as it is to indulge the, all-you-can-eat, night out is not an inexpensive treat and happens at most twice a year. I’ve pretty much followed the limited consumption rules. Wish I was able to follow some limited consumption rules for breathing our air, but I am needing to approach that little problem from other routes.
Peace and Resolve
Spudtruckowner, I make a nice thousand island dressing you might like. Basically just mayonaisse and ketchup.
Peace and Resolve and keep breathing. :)
Was not paying attention to my commas, sorry.
OT Boehner just on the news whining about D’s offering no spending cuts in the “Grand Bargain.”
Add some pickle relish to it. Salt and pepper.
Good to go.
That’s eggzactically what I add. Isn’t it the best?
((Kris))
Good job this morning.
And, yes, this is your house and our house.
We built this!
(make no mistake. :)
It’s raining, so no walk in the park. I went to the market instead and got stuff I needed to make a pot of chili.
I looked for Bus stop Bob and found him and gave him the jeans and razors I bought for him yesterday. Told him I’d bring some chili down later when it’s ready. There were 5 of them, huddled together with their shopping carts, under the overhang. So, I guess I’ll be taking down 5 bowls.
Life is sad. Make chili.
To me, most salmon is strong with a distinctive taste, which I love, but can’t imagine you could disguise salmon for a fish avoider. I think you’d need a very mild white fish to do that. Sometimes you can get someone who thinks they don’t like fish to eat something breaded.
My granddaughters like fish sticks, and deny that there is fish in them. LOL.
Demi, I just got a Christmas card that is also a punch-out recipe card and the recipe is for Brunswick Stew from some tavern. I will send the recipe if you’d be interested. It is stewing chicken and a few veggies and serves 8-10. Might be nice to take your bus stop friends, and would be inexpensive to make.
Sounds good to me. It would be kind of you to send it and you can be part of the helping the bus stop folks. Thanks.
The chili I make has a few veggies too. Just onion, bell pepper, celery and sliced carrots. I’m going to make a big pot of penne rigate on which to serve the chili on top. And, I bought them a 1/2 price bag of wheat bagels also.
I did not buy a can of catfood. My guy gets dry only.
You are such a kindly soul. It is indeed a pleasure to know you.
Oh, get out, Jimmy.
I bought the jeans, cut off shorts, which is what he insisted he wanted. They were $3.98, marked down to $1.98.
But, you know what? He always gets a little weepy, which gets me going too. He always says God Bless you for all your help. And, he means it too. We’re an interesting pair of people hugging on the street.
And, also, I hope you don’t mind me calling you Jimmy. I use it with the most fondness and respect.
You might remember that I’ve said my daddy was called Jimmy.
PPS, Der, I forgot to say At The Thrift Store.
Just received my Nagi funds. Thank you Firepups!! That money has bought my and Nagi’s FL to CA leg airline ticket. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Oh, thank you yellowsnapdragon. I’m happy for you and Nagi. Perfect birthday present for Richard.
YGM. The recipe.
We will want a diary, with pictures!
Got it. Thanks. :)
I will definitely diary Hollywood Nagi’s transcontinental trip. Heehee. I’m so excited about meeting him.
