The Thursday foreign media are pretty busy with news about the new Pope of the Catholic
Church announced yesterday, a South American very much at variance with emerging progressive promotion of women’s rights.
“In favour of Bergoglio is his pastoral attitude, as they say in the Church – his relationship with the people,” said Leandro Pastor, a friend of the new Pope for a quarter of a century who is philosophy professor at the University of Buenos Aires. “He’s a very simple man. He’s very austere. And also, I think he’s an intelligent man and someone who is very good at communicating.”
But he has also campaigned strongly against the progressive social agenda of the Argentine government.
Like John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, he regards the Roman Catholic Church’s core values as under attack from secular society.
Monsignor Osvaldo Musto, who was at seminary with him, said the archbishop would also be a good choice in terms of continuity.
“He’s as uncompromising as Pope John Paul II, in terms of the principles of the Church – everything it has defended regarding euthanasia, the death penalty, abortion, the right to life, human rights, celibacy of priests. All of this will continue if Bergoglio is made Pope.”
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species secured protections that are meeting with continuing opposition in protections of sharks and ivory trade
“If you see ivory being sold at the airport terminals, all they need to do is shut it down. These are do-able actions, they are not ones that would require a great deal of new resources,” he added.
There is a chance that these proposals could be watered down. But Mr Zain said that there had been a significant change in Cites, as seen in relation to rhinos, elephants and sharks.
Governments, he said, were no longer seeing these species issues as being about biodiversity – they were seen as threats to national security.
“The criminals who are now poaching elephants and smuggling tiger parts are the same who are funding terrorism and funding militias,” he added. “This is mainstream.”
An international rights organization, Save the Children, report detailed the plight of Syrian children caught up in conflict and the targeting of them in the fighting.
The report also said two-thirds of children surveyed said that they had been separated from members of their families due to the conflict and a third said they had experienced the death of a close friend or family member.
“All these children tell you these stories in a matter of fact way and then you realise that there are layers and layers of emotional trauma there,” said Forsyth.
Forsythe said he met a Syrian refugee boy, 12, who saw his best friend killed outside a bakery.
Forsythe also said that rape is being used to deliberately punish opponents of the government, adding that it is under-reported due to the sensitivity of the issue, especially among conservative communities.
Canadian opposition pointed out that the proposed XL pipeline promoted by Harper will be a damaging element in the country’s operation of it.
Pumping tar sands oil to America would cost 40,000 Canadian jobs, and would keep energy prices high inside Canada, Mulcair said.
Instead of lobbying hard for a pipeline south, to refineries on the Gulf coast, Mulcair said his government would have focused on getting tar sands crude to market through Canadian east coast ports. “We would make sure that we bring the product from west to east. We would take care of our energy security. We would create jobs in Canada, and we would get a better price for our producers,” he said.
Mulcair’s remarks – though he stopped short of explicitly opposing the pipeline – were in sharp contrast with the line promoted by the Conservative government of Stephen Harper, which has said the Keystone XL project is critical to Canada’s economy.
As always, we close with Southern Dragon’s insistence that we; Never.Give.Up.

morning, pups, had to adjust time for DST, it likely hasn’t been worked into the system yet
and mining the sea floor? what could possibly go wrong?
‘A British company has announced that it is planning to exploit a new and controversial frontier in the search for valuable minerals, by mining the sea bed in the Pacific Ocean.’
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-21782277
Wonder what chemicals will be used.
Good morning, Ruth! I love DST but it throws my body clock off a bit for a few days. So my internal alarm has to adjust and I’ve been waking slightly later this week.
Up to read!
Hmmm. The timestamp on this is 4:10 a.m. and it’s 8:10 a.m. here, so it’s 4 hours off. Weird!
Happy π Day everyone!
Thanks for early rising, doing a tad of that sleeping in, myself.
Good Morning, Ruth.
Thanks for putting together these reports.
I haven’t read very much about the new pope so far, but so far I’m not reading anything that’s hopeful. Caring for the poor? Where’d he get that crazy notion?
This is just heartbreaking.
Thanks for the post and host Ruth, and good morning firedogs.
Thanks for coming by, and my view of how he loves the poor is that maybe that’s why he wants to produce so many of them.
Seems like what Im hearing…that he has not been a part of the “liberation theology” that many follow in his area…
but humble and concerned for the poor. We’ll see.
Good Morning, All.
Morning, Dakine.
Vat’s dat mean?
Pi.
Here’s Charlie Pierce on the new pope. Charlie’s Catholic, but has a rather jaded view of what he calls the Clan of the Red Beanie.
Meet Your New Pope
Lots of stuff coming out about his activities in past years.
Ah Demi, you no remember the days of yore in school?
π = 3.14
I forgot it’s Pi day. I need to rent Life of Pi, I guess. LOL.
Good morning everyone.
Thank you for the post Ruth.
Hi, Bev.
We will see, won’t we? It’s kind of wonky to me that “caring for the poor” is the best thing that’s being said right now. Considering that compassion is what the church is supposedly founded on, one would naturally expect him to care. Oh. And, more.
Thanks, Kris. That’s what I first thought, but you know, I have been known to be Wrong.
How’s tricks? Did you happen to see the comments yesterday about soaking your seeds before you plant them?
Yummmm….coconut cream pie.
The first morning of DST I got up at about 8:15, almost exactly when I’d wake (7:15) on standard time. The rest of this week has been all over the map. Today it was 7:45.
I’ve also had a weird couple of nights sleep. I wake up sometime in the night and lie there for what seems like hours (probably only an hour or so) without being able to go back to sleep. I’m having no stress or worries, no loud neighborhood noises, I just can’t fall asleep again for awhile.
So then when I do, I sleep a little later.
Morning All!
The Pope: Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. Despite his name selection, I don’t think he’ll be any different the Benedict. I do wonder if he’ll continue the churches policy of blocking marriage equality from the shadows of if he’ll give it up as a lost cause.
Ivory: IMO the problem is not ivory, but poaching. If I’m right, we could solve the problem for several years buy dumping ivory on the market from the confiscation stash and drop the price to the point that poaching is unprofitable. Dunno, but would like to see it studied. Because the only other solution I can see is shooting poachers on sight.
Syria: If only they had oil, we’d have come and rescued them by now. The human catastrophe will never be enough to cause the United States to act, especially since Russia seems willing to support Assad as long as he’s breathing. My solution is still the same: let Russia pick the next Syrian leader, as long as the population accepts the choice. Make sure Russia keeps it’s base and contracts. In return, Russia sends a plane to carry Assad, et al, into exile.
Keystone: We need to make it unprofitable, regardless of where the crap is routed. This is all about money, and if there is none the problem will go away. Glad that keystone isn’t smart enough to build a refinery at the tar sands location and ship refined product.
Boxturtle (Here in Ohio, they’re talking about raising the speed limit to 70)
Da. I get it now.
I must be super slow this am.
Raspberry Rhubarb Pie.
And a full circumference thereof.
Dad and I went out last night and found organic seeds locally. We actually discussed the soaking method from yesterday’s thread :)
I’ve been wrong twice already today, and I’ve only been up 45 minutes!
How’s your novel coming?
Seabed mining worries me a lot. Don’t like the idea of all those chemicals being released on the ocean floor. Don’t like the thought of what the shock waves from blasting will do. Don’t like the thought of the semi-refined tailings being dumped back into the ocean.
That said, IF we had decent regulations, such mining would likely be no worse for the environment that current mining. And it might take less, because those ores are pretty high grade.
Boxturtle (Predicts an area of environmental devastation centered on each mining site)
(sing song voice) Good Morning, Mister Canyon.
Been on the roof lately?
How’s your wife fairing these days?
And, how’s the dog?
I think the Interstates have been 70 mph for at least awhile. The one that runs through South Bend (I-80/90, our “beloved” toll road that Mitch Daniels gave away to the furriners is 70 mph).
Yes. Where will this report be read, I wonder. Seems that some idea of what you’re doing to a country and its kids might creep into the consciousness of those creating those wars, someday.
Slowly. But, I created a new character yesterday that I’m excited about. Inch by inch.
Thanks for asking.
Conservative is the description I see that does not sound good, totally has been on the outs with the growing progressive governments that are letting their public clinics give family planning to working people, in contradiction of church beliefs.
He notes one thing that I also do, but haven’t seen discussed much: The new pope’s age means he’s just a caretaker. He might not last even as long as Benedict. I agree with his speculation that there’s a strong group of Cardinals that doesn’t want a long papacy.
Boxturtle (The Cardinals are older than dirt as a group, so it might be just the odds)
Dream on, kid.
I guess they weren’t taught about consequences, huh?
Thanks, and maybe a massive tusk removal program will do the trick.
There’s no reason to kill an elephant that has no ivory for you. Selling the ivory and giving the proceeds to, say, kids’ schools sound like the ideal plan.
Maybe his not being Italian is a sign of some transition; he
certainly is not likely to see any changes for women from what
Ive heard.
Yes, I’ve seen his age mentioned several times. Apparently mostly the longer the tenure, the more influence (wasn’t John XXIII the exception) he will have on the church.
I’m an atheist so I really don’t care, but it’s interesting watching from the peanut gallery.
I’m glad it’s progressing! I tried to write a novel once. I failed utterly after 15 pages.
And I think Benedict appointed many of them, so he sorta stacked the deck when it came to his views of the church.
All seems odd to me. I’m a Unitarian Universalist (but I haven’t attended in recent years) and congregations call our own pastors and elect our own officials.
! Let’s start a club!
I watched MSNBC yesterday for the announcement, and was amused to see Tweety go through a linguistic gymnastics routine for 2 minutes, trying to convince the world that the Pope is still uberpowerful. He went so far as to suggest that the Pope somehow defeated Stalin.
It was pretty nauseating.
Raising it to 70 here is just an acknowledgment of reality. I drive I71 every day with my cruise control set at 74. I get passed more often than I pass and I don’t even rate a yawn from a laser operator. If they raise the speed limit, I’ll just set the cruise at 79.
When you have a law that is so widely ignored and that generates several multimillion dollar business in evasion devices, you have to wonder if that law is doing any good at all.
IMO, if you want to improve road safety, you do something to reduce the impatience and frustration of drivers, something to deal with sleepy truckers, and start enforcing turn signals with lane changes.
Boxturtle (A cop clocking speeders seems to make the highway MORE unsafe at that location)
Driving in TX it gets to 80, in ways just an acknowledgement of reality. Still, having trucks all around me, along with the native drivers of all sorts, doesn’t make me want to travel there.
I recall seeing that Benedict was supposed to be a caretaker. Guess they got disappointed, and maybe he was ‘encouraged’ to leave? Have no idea about Vatican politics, but the scandals sure are mounting up.
One thing that really bugs me is all the drivers who are still on their cell phones. Cops are too busy rousting the homeless from the bus benches.
Yes, and turn signals. Hardly anyone around here uses them.
Everyone just does what they want.
Tusk removal was considered back in the 80′s. IIR, it was discovered that elephants lacking tusks lived much shorter lives and the actual operation increased the risks of infection. Further, the poachers were willing to kill for stubs that hadn’t even erupted.
I wonder if it’s time for another look at that. Techniques and antibiotics have advanced a lot since then.
Boxturtle (I gotta admit, a GOP-like solution of shoot on sight becomes more attractive with every corpse)
I routinely set my cruise control to about 7 or 8 miles over the limit, except in residential neighborhoods or school zones. So far I’ve never been stopped for that.
And on the Interstates I am passed all the time by people with a heavier foot. I have a heavy foot, but that’s why God made cruise control.
All true here as well. What is so hard about turn signals?
Weird.
It does tickle my funny bone to watch all these humans try to divine whom God wants them to vote for. :-)
Boxturtle (God may have sat this one out, he’s busy driving the Bus for the Nuns)
Alternate opening hours for agencies/businesses, and staggered hours for employees has been instituted in the dreaded government to alleviate rush hours in D.C.
Do you think people just aren’t concerned with anything other than talking to the person on the cell phone? It kind of feels like another manifestation of not caring about others. Or something.
I have a friend who is a catholic priest. His take: Either there’s something really UGLY about to become public or Benedict should already be in Hospice.
Boxturtle (Nobody seems to believe that Benedict was just tired and worn out)
Good morning demi.
No subbing today so I get to enjoy Over Easy.
My wife is doing fine these days. Sleeping alot with all the meds that we cannot get the Drs. to lower for her. “They are health maintenance…”
Max will be asking me to shovel before he goes out today with the snow coming AGAIN.
How is everything on the West Coast?
Did your hubby get that Organ into the house. I bet your home is filled with music.
That seems odd, since being shot down seems like an early end to elephants’ lives. It is being used to keep down traffick in rhino horns;
http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/africa-seeks-solution-to-poachers-selling-rhino-horns-to-asia-a-846605.html
I have to be very careful grumping about cell phones, as my wife is a collection of all the bad habits a cellphone using driver could have. I upped her car insurance and life insurance solely because of it. She just rolled her eyes.
Boxturtle (She might have said something, but she was on the phone at the time)
I’m glad your wife is maintaining.
I’m glad you can stay and play with us.
The new “piano” is in place and yes, we have music. And, we’re having my flute overhauled so that we can practice together. Will cost $200, but it’s got to be done. I’ve got a birthday coming up, so the family is helping out with the cost. We actually took the flute to the music store last night, but they were closed. Will go again today.
Oh boy, oh boy.
While I’ve been told that speed doesn’t get the attention of traffic control until it’s out of sync with traffic in general, I feel okay with driving about 5 miles over the limit if I’m in a hurry. However usually I want to keep down my gas consumption, so drive slower than 60.
Here’s a shot of the new piano, that does Not have real ivory keys.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/85310452@N05/8495095981/in/photostream/lightbox/
The problem with turn signals is that they work both ways. When used, they either signal other drivers to yield a bit or signal them to speed up and cut you off.
People who see mostly the latter see no benefit in alerting jackasses about their intention.
Boxturtle (In Xenia everybody signals because almost everybody politely yields)
Sorry, I thought it was an organ, not a piano. My bad.
No matter what, there will be music at demi’s place.
Too many business car/truck drivers seem to spend their driving time on the phone, I guess either arranging their next business visit or finding directions to it. Like to see that stop. I won’t answer my phone while I’m driving.
It’s harder than ever to keep secrets these days. Interesting what your friend said.
Rino horns are different. They’re used mainly in traditional medicines and as dagger handles. You could make a significant dent by shortening the horn to the point it is useless as the latter and too difficult to work for the former.
Yeah, it seems to me that being shot would be a bit more life shortening than the alternatives. But what do I know?
Boxturtle (In the case of Rino horn, I’d also flood the market with fakes)
In the shot of the piano, at #53, the cat is sitting on the organ. We have both.
So glad you got a day to spend with us, but of course wish you all the subbing you need. I’m another one who really tries to avoid a lot of meds, but sometimes you have to do them, doctors’ orders.
I thought i was the only person who did that. My wife knows to emergency me if I’m driving and she NEEDS to talk. I’ll pull over and call her.
Boxturtle (Stubborn, old-fashioned, and not interested in becoming a traffic statistic)
I’ve spent alot of my time driving at night in triple digit Peterbuilts, one of these, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peterbilt_379, pulling a flat bed. In Pa the cops will tell you 9 you’re fine, ten you’re mine. At night the speed limit on I-80 across Pa is unlimited.
It’s easy for me. I don’t have a cell phone. :)
Massive cover up of pederast priests being sent on to do it all over again isn’t UGLY? Just shoot me.
What a nice picture.
Nice truck, spuds.
I avoid freeway driving because of all the trucks. I’m close to the 5 and it’s truck city.
I should have mentioned savings on insurance as well as gas. And not having time to spend in traction, too. IOW, right.
And I posted before your #59. Plenty of music possibilities at your house, and now with the flute repair, you are now dubbed “The Music Lady.”
Ohio has the same policy. Slide at 9, bust at 10. I think that’s pretty common nationwide.
Truck questions: If you could have any truck you wanted, what would you get and why? Is there a “Rolls-Royce” of semi’s? What’s the best sleeper?
Boxturtle (Is there a vaccine for simple monkey curiosity?)
Gotta run into town before the snow starts accumulating.
This system is coming out of Minnesota so I think you are going to miss this one msmolly.
Have a great day everyone.
If I just shot you, Kris would do a gun control post just about me. :-)
Yeah, it does make you wonder what out there could be uglier than that other than finding Benedict had a MUCH larger exposure than previously known.
Boxturtle (Still thinks Germany should indict him)
Actually, I think JClausen has more instruments at his house. :)
Wonder if he’s subbing this morning.
Bringing us music alla time. demi’s definitely got a lilt going.
Tusk.
Hope you stay safe, thanks for coming by to visit.
Who Shot H.R.?
and yes, shooting me would also have a negative effect on
Thursday’s Over Easy, too.
Best truck? That’s like the pc versus mack argument. Each one is suited to the job you do and what you’re happy driving. I like peets and freightshakers. I’m done with them now, thank dog.
1, Kenworth
2, Peterbilt
3, Freightliner
4, Volvo
5, Mack
Good mornin’ pups and welcome to another day of “Ain’t It Awful! (Just read through the titles of the majority of threads here, DWT, EW etc.
I’m halfway to my 76th birthday, don’t know how much longer I’ll live and in any case, the day after, Ain’t It Awful will still be in full tilt.
Just look at recent history, then keep looking further back.
So, I give it up. Something much better is actually available so it’s time to quit Ain’t it Awful.
Generally speaking, organizations run by 70-something year-old men, the US Senate, the College of Cardinals or Florida condos, will yield results that are less than above reproach.
This is from some one who’ll be driving down the road, and say something like; “Isn’t that beautiful” and I go looking at the scenery. Nope, it’s a nice truck.
Yes, I hope it misses us. I’m driving to Indy in the morning.
The sun is out and it’s cold and clear here.
Neighbor has a Peterbilt that he’s spent more on customizing than he did on the purchase. Actually, he’s spent more on that truck than he has on his house.
Boxturtle (I guess he spends more time in the truck)
You’re harshing on everyone’s favorite complaint, that’s Just Awful!
You left out the coathanger court. Wearing dresses doesn’t help, that also will cover the condo crowd’s beach coverups.
Ha. When the food director at Mend got a new truck for food hauling, he said to me Isn’t it sexy? Yeah, sure.
To each, his own.
You’d be a mention in the context of a broader discussion BT :)
Tangentially related: Ohio saves money on prisons, none of the credit belongs to private prisons.
We just adopted some policies without regard to ideology. They just have to have evidence that showed they worked. Amazing what happens if you go by evidence rather than pre-concieved notions.
Next, we should look techniques that PREVENT crime with the same eye toward evidence.
Boxturtle (It’s tough on the GOP when getting tough on crime doesn’t solve the crime problem)
Different tastes make the world go ’round I guess. Horticulturists will be telling you isn’t that gorgeous and mean that stick there trying to grow up tall.
More chicken lights!!
Too true. Look at the variety of styles we enjoy here, just at Over Easy.
I wonder if the stores will have pies on sale today.
Must check.
Hey!
What have you been smoking?
If you’re halfway to your 76th birthday, you’re only 38, just a youngster. ;^D
Your point is well taken.
Haven’t seen you around for a few days. Happy to see you, Starbuck.
It used to be if you shot someone, you got a story in the local paper all to yourself. I suppose in these days, shooting just one person isn’t really newsworthy.
Boxturtle (I’m either going to have to get a big magazine or practice reloading)
Just speaking for myself, Ruth.
Okay, what’s a “chicken light”?
Boxturtle (I’ve never seen Foghorn Leghorn on a truck…)
You’re a tough cookie, SB. I think she was teasing you.
I think there’s something in the water. Our GOPer governor has actually been coming up with ideas I can support. Not all of them, but he’s done better than Obama so far this year.
It may well be that issue two caused him to wake up.
Boxturtle (And he’s not signing on to the GOP voter suppression plans)
Or if you have lots and lots and lots of gunz. Ya know, like me.
Admission; I have too much fun.
Son, I say son, those are lights for your chicken.
Good morning Ruth, thanks for the post and host, Eggs on toast yesterday, eggs on a plate today. Going to have to get some chickens.
Trying to get a few hours of activities done prior to booting the IPS connection. Will need to be up and active, early, if I plan on expanding the garden corner of my world toward market proportions.
Mugabe did just that the first few years he was in power – pulling the Black Rhino back from the brink (at least temporarily)
Good Morning Ruth and Firedogs – how y’all doin’ ?
and of course it’s pie day. . . I made a cheesecake this morning :/
“Chickens iz your Friend”.
Some of our governors are actually doing something that helps out the public, must be future votes coming home to roost. (more chickens)
Thanks, what we need around here is more chickens! you’re on the right track for this thread for sure.
What kind of cheesecake?
Good morning all and thanks for the postnhost Ruth.
BGawk!
Mornin’ Rev,
he’s said to be of Eye-talian ancestry
and this lil hippy would love to know where he was when Argentina was disappearing and murdering it’s people – it was the Church after all serving as middle man when babies of the disappeared-while-pregnant were adopted by ‘righteous’ families
white chocolate pumpkin
Mornin’ there Scooter Boy . . .
ooooohhhhh, cheeeeesecake… much better now
Heile Selasie would have turned his leopards out on them. No, that wouldn’t work against guns. \
Have the cheese pie/quiche for lunch, then you’re celebrating pi right.
I’m waiting for a bleu cheese cake.
No, I’m not.
Blue cheese quiche? Could work.
Perhaps we’ve finally found a decent use for drones.
Boxturtle (Hey Obama! All the poachers are AQ islamists! Curveball told me so!)
Have been seeing elsewhere that the Church was hands off there, sort of like it was in the Nazi takeover days. Losing church property is first on the list of priorities, it seems.
I’ll make you one, just to see you eat a slice!
Boxturtle (Would you like strawberries on that?)
With mushrooms, mustard, spinach… must stop myself now.
Flying the coop for now, had my eggs and ate them too. Inspiration fueling my motivation this morning. Later puppers.
Yum. Cheesecake, my favorite dessert. Was it you who posted a recipe (couple of years ago) for cheesecake made with Girl Scout thin mints crust?
For everyone.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srCBkXtEP2E
And this is me now.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nddVC8iTbeM
I know.
Anyway, I’m off to the world of mobile devices.
Later!
I’m out too, for now. Off to an appointment, then soup making, packing, laundry, and cleaning off the old laptop I’m giving my granddaughter (yes, I’ve planned to give her the machine for weeks, so it’s now the day before I leave and…)
Have a good one!
Not awful. Maybe.
As we saw yesterday, killing 4 and wounding 2 others isn’t really newsworthy either.
My understanding is that the remaining wild black rhinos travel with an armed escort of at least 3 men at all times. They will kill anyone who approaches without permission and fails to obey commands.
So glad, have a great time, thanks for helping getting WI back on track.
That sounds awfully good. And evil.
Thanks to all now going off to start their other daytime activity, and I’ve heard from ChiDyke just now, at here;
‘good morning. reports of my death and insanity are only somewhat exaggerated. i am at least still alive. heh, i’ll tell you all about it later, but the short of the long of it are 1) don’t go off your diet suddenly if you’ve been eating really healthy for a while; junk food kills 2) hydrate, people 3) it’s important to take time to destress periodically 4) i have very kind neighbors who are good people. i will survive.
i am, however, on the world’s slowest and most clunky computer and have a great deal to do today, so i’ll have to blog during breaks. thanks for all the kind thoughts, i read some in between MRI sessions. as far as they can tell, my brain is mostly healthy. but /david banner voice, don’t make me angry. you wouldn’t like me when i’m Angry. ;-)
i’ll see you all around later. again, thank you for all the support. you’re the Best. ‘

yeppers :D
this one’s easy-peasy
3 8 0z cream cheese
(softened to room temp or microwave for a minute and half)
4 eggs
1 can Sweetened Condensed Milk
1/2 cup sugar
1 Tablespoon vanilla ( I always add 1 tsp Almond Extract as well)
graham cracker crust (or crushed thin mints, your choice)
optional: 1/4 cup milk/half & half,/or cream + 1/2 pkg w choc chips (melted in yr microwave in 30 second bursts, stir in between)
Add the eggs to the rest of your ingredients in your mixing bowl 1 at a time –
add pumpkin, or strawberry slurry, lemon, peanut butter,or melted chocolate – whatevsies you are you using – and just mix ’til smooth
pour the whole magilla in to springform pan or any suitable pan you have – with LOTS of PAM
bake 1 hour at 325 (be sure to place pan of water on bottom rack)
let that sucker rest on the counter til cool and then stick in your fridge for as long as you can – preferably overnight, but 4 hours minimum
took me longer to type than mix :D
kinda like Mussolini getting the trains to run on time – there’s a lot to not like about Mugabe’s time in power (mere empty suit for the Military now) but NOBODY poaches in Zimbabwe
and NO! I’m not obsessed with sugar, I was Framed !
Pi day just is asking for this. luscious.
Boxturtle’s rules of cheesecake:
1) Always use more vanilla than the recipe calls for.
2) NEVER use fake vanilla.
3) use 10x sugar.
4) THAT PAN OF WATER IS IMPORTANT.
5) Hide the cheesecake. Nobody is going to wait 4 hours or overnight for a slice if you do it right.
Boxturtle (And it seems a non-convection over works better)
non-convection OVEN. I want my edit button back!!!!! FYWP!!!!
Boxturtle (it may be that I don’t know how to properly use a convection over, however)
Three cheers for ChiDy!! Welcome back. You gave us all a good scare, woman.
So the “junk food defense” may have some merit after all? The Cheetos made me do it…
Cooking outside in the brick oven is even better. But you will pry my conveniences from my cold dead hands.
Remember the Raw Food post? she’s just proving it true.
this ol tightwad finally started spending $$$ on real vanilla – and I always use a tablespoon when recipe calls for teaspoon :D
Thank you, spudtruckowner. Real nice.
Was there a low rider truck in there? Ha.
Heheheh. I do remember that post. So food really does affect brain function
I never found real vanilla that much more expensive, given the amount I typically use. It’s about $10 vs about $2 for similar sized bottles, though I’ve been awhile since I’ve bought. Vanilla normally lasts me awhile.
I’ve often wondered if I could make my own extract better. I know they use lower grade beans for the extract, the best beans are sold individually.
Boxturtle (Or perhaps that’s just a rationalization for making vanilla vodka)
Here’s some good news. Chris Hayes is replacing Ed Schultz at MSNBC at 8 o’clock, evenings.
The youngest, most progressive anchor of all the cable outlets.
Back from a much needed shower.
Demi..Nolowridersaloud.
BT ..Those are all the extra lights your neighbor has added.
Now that I’ve been scolded for posting distractions I’ll just be quiet.
That was true of Rachel when she joined MSNBC. Look what happened to her.
I hope the same doesn’t happen to Chris. I think he’s great.
See what happens when I leave the room?
Both my sisters played flute, sister demi. :)
Just started the thread because I left early to take my mother to Gunderson in La Crosse(a 90 mile one way trip)and saw three cars in the ditch, couldn’t see crap so turned around after 15 miles.
Have I said lately that I am tired of winter. :(
So glad you made it back.
I used to have a four wheel drive toyota but family obligations made me trade it in for a FWD Pontiac Montana van and I hate driving it in freaky weather.(my 86 year old mother thought we should keep going cuz she was raised in Minnesota) :)
Thanks Ruth, glad to be safely home.(I am glad chicago dyke is recuperating well. We ARE a family here.
Yeah, a lot of lights. But most of the money is in the cab. EVERYTHING is either leather, burled wood, chromed, glass, or absolutely necessary for safe operation.
Boxturtle (And a Corinthian leather airbag would not surprise me)
My solution to ice and driving snow is staying in. It’s the other folks on the road that worry me the most.
Yep, we don’t just talk here.
Mornin’ Ruth & thanks. Mornin’ pups.
That Canadian pipeline stuff is getting really interesting. Mulcair is the NDP leader -ze lefties- and I have heard the same comment and stronger from right-wing westerners. Interesting also to hear Mulcair with the Canadian version of drill, baby, drill for energy independence when IT’S ALL GOING TO CHINA ANYWAY. I heard a westerner say the other day that Alberta/Canada would solve their current provincial budget problems IF ONLY the tar sands stuff was sold in Asian markets. *facepalm*
In other Canadian news ….
* Yesterday, a Canadian astronaut (Hadfield) took over command of the Space Station! Bow down, earthlings!
* On the same day the first Canadian in space (Garneau), former head of the Canadian Space Agency, current member of Parliament, and solid second place contender for the leadership of the decimated federal Liberal party, threw his support to the front-runner, the son of Canada’s charismatic PM Pierre Elliot Trudeau!!
* Making Justin Trudeau (finally) the man to beat in the race for who will resurrect the federal Liberals! This will make Harper (and Mulcair imho) look like the old fuddy duddies (to coin a very nice PET “saying”) they are!
Oh, and a Pope was elected. But he won’t command the Space Station OR control politics in the pivotal Roman Catholic Quebec.
Interesting juxtapositions. I could get really interested in Canadian politics again. And O.M.G. let’s ask the Pope to pray that Harper is finally in trouble. Justin needs some more polishing but for the young and the non-old-white-guys the Liberals have a solid history as a go-to party.
Thanks, that’s encouraging, Harper has really been showing his cloven feet and looks like he’s lost the progressive voters, of which there are many in Canada.
Not knowing Canadian politics very well, do the progressives there have a progressive choice or must they choose the lesser of evils as we do?
Boxturtle (Or would that be the evil of lessors?)
I’ll post this link to Peterbilt in Sylmar.
And, go sit in the corner before I get scolded. :)
Oh, honey. It’s time for it to go away.
And, here, yesterday was forecast for 90.
Was close to 100 on the front porch yesterday early evening.
Ruh Roh.
I’m already wearing shorts and cut off t-shirts.
I’m so excited about getting the flute re-padded. Toot-ta-lee-do.
Courageous Mom!
I guess she’s one of the reasons you’re such a great guy. I just happen to like severely compassionate folks who are creative.
(Spuds, do you hear me calling your name – I think you’re one too. Any friend of Ruth’s…etc.)
Taking a quick break from my crazy day to post this from our Christy Hardin Smith:
Clearing the First Hurdle
Back in 86, a comet flew by.
We’d all pulled over, to give a sigh.
For there in the tail, not too far behind.
Was a cab-over Jimi, with stacks all ablaze,
We knew he was gaining, we knew he’d soon find.
That thing we all work for, time after time.
If your out there chasing, your dreams through the night.
Make way for that trucker, let him roll through.
The freight that he’s haulin, is coming to you.
(gulp).
It’s my aim to stay fluid, loose, bending with the wind of circumstances and the bigger wave.
I guess I realize now that here at the Lake, people get some of my loser moments.
But, I find it comforting that there are some also – besides those inside my home life – who Get Me.
Thanks to youz and doze.
Hi, folks, came by mostly for news of our never-met-friend in N Tex. Glad to hear she’s up to posting a bit and feeling better.
Dehydration alone can cause hallucinations,iirc.
And Christy — lord, that woman has come through so much, she doesn’t deserve this, nor does her family. No doubt she will conquer this, too, though.
Now, off to do something for my money. Have a great day, all. And Ruth, belssings on ya for helping out CD.
Thanks, tr, glad things are looking up there, and of course doing whatever we can is what makes this a great community.
Hi, BT: about progressives in Canada …
Short story: it’s not as bad as in the States where there are only 2 parties.
We do have 3 main parties and more. And while the Republicans have morphed away from Reagan towards the Tea Party, when that kind of thing happens in Canada, old parties die, new parties are formed, and there are new (sorta) names. So, it’s more fluid than the US.
The Liberal (D-like) party has a long history and may be having it’s fork in the road ~ the last election was brutal and they face many years of rebuilding after deciding not to merge with the NDP. They have marshalled no effective resistence to Harper’s Conservatives …
… Whose provenance is the Progressive Conservatives (yeah, put that in your pipe …) which got beat really badly in the 80s and morphed/split into the Reform party and an early version of the Conservatives. These entities eventually recombined and Harper rose from the western frontier.
There has also been the Bloc Quebecois, a separatist-based group that took Ottawa by storm and has been a powerful alliance group in Ottawa. Their goal was to represent Quebec’s separatist ethos on the federal stage, an odd mission at the very least. Still, colorful and bringing a touch of Quebec socialist thinking to the federal stage.
Then there is the NDP (New Democratic Party) which has been an ongoing force, up and down, since its provenance in mid-century socialism that gave Canada universal health care, which is considered untouchable. Jack Layton was the gifted (Toronto-based) leader who died of cancer after winning the Opposition spot (first in history for the NDP) in the last election a couple of years ago). The NDP had a huge breakthrough in Quebec partly because of a Liberal campaign fund scandal. The NDP did so well that the Bloc Quebecois disbanded! Mulcair is the Quebec-based replacement leader for Layton ~ necessary to hold Quebec, but he’s really horrible. Horrible like the recent Liberal leaders, to my mind.
The Liberals have been in disarray after a wounded finance minister took over (Martin ~ done in by the previous leader -Cretien, who was Trudeau’s guy- holding the Quebec scandal at bay long enough so that it would hurt his nemesis: Martin!), a popular climate change champion (Dion) who didn’t have the chops to match Harper, and an ex-pat intellectual (Ignatief – sp?) who really had no business trying.
This is why it is significant that the young Justin Trudeau is being accepted as not too young to take over, because he really is the only hope for the Liberals right now.
All that is off the top of my head, so others more well-read than I may quibble … but you get the picture.
Having the NDP voice really makes things different. I am a big fan of Broadbent, a previous NDP leader who is still on the scene. He’s kind of like a Canadian Carter, although he only rose high enough to hold the balance of power in one of Trudeau’s minority governments.
However, with the arrival of Harper and his iron hold on power and the electoral math -I think only 1/3 of the voting population actually voted for him last time- we have seen a shocking move to American-style conservative political consultant talking points. I remember the day when I first heard American conservative ideas on the Canadian news …. made me quite ill.
Oh, and how could I forget! As of the last election we have one Green Party Member of Parliament, the wonderful Elizabeth May. And there has been at least one provincial referendum and lots of talk about moving to European-style proportional representation/voting which would give the non-major parties much more opportunity. And then there’s the scandal-ridden, appointed, maybe soon to become elected Canadian Senate ……..
So, all in all quite different from the States, well, maybe except for the Senate stuff :-).
Happy to discuss further any part of this that you find interesting as far as my knowledge goes!
As far as progressive choices, the NDP is better than the States and their breakthrough to official opposition was a stunning game-changer. But it was Layton’s doing and we have lost him. So we’ll see where things go.
Wishing all the best to chicago dyke and Christy. May the road be smooth and gentle, all the way.
Wow, reader, that should be a diary or a post here at Over Easy! Interested in a guest spot? You write so well, and we’d love to have a different voice here now and then!
