Hieroglyphic Altar

Description of Altar

As we explored last Saturday and the one before, an excellent collection of art from Precolumbian Mesoamerica, South and Central America, contained at the Art Institute of Chicago, will be the subject of the post today.

There are no substitutes for visiting this collection, and the Institute’s many others, but this will give some idea of what you should enjoy when you can.

Anthopomorphic figured jar, Peru, Paracas, Ococaje area, Ice Valley, south coast, 630/150 B.C., Ceramic with resinous postfire paint

The vase above looked to all of us like a figure based on a collection of human organs,  fascinating in its massed shapes.
