Two separate Chinese research groups have reprogrammed mature skin cells of mice to an embryonic-like state and used the resulting cells to create live mouse offspring. The unprecedented feat is a significant step toward to eliminate the need for embryonic cells in research and clinical applications.
Although there were irregularities and unusual deaths with some of the first generation of mice, one team produced sufficient normal mice that created hundreds of second and third-generation mice.
Their experiment signifies that it is, in theory, attainable to clone a human using skin cells, however the experts have been quick to distance themselves from such controversy.
Scientist first produced iPS cells two years ago, but there have been lingering doubts about whether the cells are identical to embryonic cells or instead are capable of producing only some types of body cells.
One scientist not involved in the study stated the findings still raise moral issues. Dr. Robert Lanza, chief scientific officer at Advanced Cell Technology Inc., which generates embryonic stem cell
lines without destroying embryos, said the studies “revive many of the same ethical issues as reproductive cloning.”“We have gone from science fiction to reality,” he added

yep. And an estimated 14% of adults in this country (USA! USA!) are absolutely illiterate in any language, with another 50 million or so only able to function at the fourth grade level or lower in English. The comparable figure in China (using the UN’s tougher criteria for literacy, I should add) is now 9% and falling rapidly (of course, the US still reports a 100% literacy rate to the UN on the argument that it no longer officially tracks the statistic). Illiteracy grew in both relative and absolute terms under shrub, although how much remains a subject of debate. Speaking in scientific language, this means we’re scr*w*d.
Its a viscious cycle actually – illiterate people vote for rethugs who increase illiteracy. Palin-Wurzelbacher ‘12, here we come!
