At a critical point in last night’s debate, John McCain accused Obama of engaging in "class warfare" and wanting to "redistribute" income/wealth. It is a common Republican complaint, but McCain’s version was particularly vicious.
He used Joe the Plumber to make the point, telling Joe that to Obama, "redistribution" means to take wealth from those patriotic ordinary Americans like Joe and giving it to the underserving, presumably those perpetrators of massive fraud at ACORN!
So every day for weeks we’ve been reading stories of millionaire bankers being bailed out with a trillion dollars by taxpayers after the bankers, still clinging to their jobs and their bloated salaries, squandered trillions of dollars, bankrupt their firms, nearly brought down the world’s financial system and caused a deep recession that will cause millions to lose their jobs.
Meanwhile, the middle class has stagnated; they just watched their savings/retirement shrink, their dreams of a secure retirement, homes, covered health and college disappear, while additional millions slipped into poverty, with no jobs, no education, no heath care. Class warfare? They’ve been fleeced for decades to further enrich the richest.
If ever there was a time that cried out in the name of all that is fair and humane for rebalancing the current malevolent distribution of wealth, for promoting the general welfare and imposing progressive taxation with a vengeance, this is that moment.
But John McCain says, No! — because "redistribution" is taking money from Joe the Plumber and giving it to the undeserving, un-American people who steal elections and undermine democracy. And taxing the rich? That’s unpatriotic.
The cynicism, dishonesty and sheer cruelty of the arguments are breathtaking.

That sums it up precisely. Thank you Scarecrow.
Emptywheel says that got a couple of free cell towers for their luxury ranch in Arizona, courtesy, McCain’s telco pals, Verizon and AT&T. That wasn’t brought up in the debate, but it’s despicable (using Mel Blanc’s pronunciation).
Despicable!
Tweety compared the debate to Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny, where the rabbit is always tweaking Elmer and Elmer just can’t take his eyes off Bugs. Nice way to say “obsessed”.
I missed that, but I can get behind it. See you in Pismo Beach.
McCain is D A N G E R O U S
Absolutely. And I fear we only see the tip of the
icebergfire pit. I fear the McVeys of the world will take encouragement from Mccain’s bile.Heard a term for the 1st time today: Mccainiacs.
Yes. He seems aware of what he’s doing. But he’s lost his moral compass. imo
And I doubt Sarah ever had one.
I agree with your point scarecrow but disagree with the way you and mccain put it;
excuse me, we will not be “redistributing wealth” we will be reclaiming it
the republican party, beginning with reagan have stolen middle class wealth, getting those assets back is NOT “redistributing” it is “reclaiming”, it is getting back property that IS OURS.
I make a point in my diary, even “deregulation” is a participatory tool republicans use to redistribute middle class assets into their coffers
That was certainly a low point, but there were so many mccain low points that it is hard to single out the lowest. I thought that his defending his followers and his VP candidate’s speeches by sliding over the “palling around with terrorists” as a call to attack Obama and then saying that the same thing was happening at Obama rallys (obviously not) was about on par with your view of lowest point.
Scarecrow!!! Vote Early, I did. It feels great. Straight D for me. I even wrote in some progressive Dems for local offices that did not have a Democrat running. The early voting here in Iowa was brisk last weekend. I heard a lot of rumblings about we need change.
Nice one, Scarecrow. I keep wanting Democrats to point out that processes and institutions such as collective bargaining, worker protection laws, and a progressive income tax are not class warfare. In fact they are intended to prevent real class warfare by promoting the GENERAL welfare. The Peasant’s Revolt, the French Revolution, the Russian Revolution, and the Chinese Revolution are a few examples of actual class warfare.
I was quite impressed with the line about ACORN’s massive voter fraud “Tearing at the very fabric of democracy” line. I certainly wish Obama would have talked a bit about the Republican’s own problems in Nevada with a paid voter registration drive.
Obama missed a lot of opportunities to tee up McCain and drive him down the fairway like a one of those illegal distance balls.
Amen Scarecrow
For this to work, Republics have to convince enough voters that they are either already rich or just about rich. The economy is not cooperating with that, currently.
But…but McCain told Joe the plumber that he’s rich.
/s
Hey Scarecrow, I guess you missed McCain’s Reform ad. /s
I thought his whole debate Strike Three was vicious.
You know ”Joe the plumber” is Charles Keating’s son-in-law right?
is that really true?
http://crooksandliars.com/davi…..ng-family-
beyond belief! thanks for the link.
Not really. Keating’s son-in-law is a Robert Wurzebachler. “joe the (not a) plumber is Samuel Joseph Wurzbachler.
They may be kin to each other but that conneciton has not bee made directly. Yet.
Too much multitasking for me *g*
From my link
Cousin or whatever. Still. They’ve planted a lot of people in crowds over the years.
I’ve got a link. Give me a minute
I’m sure there’s a connection. But you stated that “Joe the Plumber is Keating’s son-in-law” and that is factually incorrect.
Just making sure we have our facts straight is all
so he’s Sam the Plumber?
not even Joe the Plumber
I guess so folks wouldn’t think of Sam the butcher from the brady bunch
Joe the plumber, wrenching story and all, is but a tool of the right-wing clogs.

I don’t know what Mc hold against income redistribution. His party is doing it in grand form. From taxpayers to Wall St.
OT: Just checked email and there is a follow-up Military Times poll. Basically they want to know if your view of the presidential/vp candidates has changed, who you plan on voting for, is the vp candidate important and who would you vote for, who would do the best on national security, and are military issues getting enough coverage. Granted about 60 percent of poll respondents for the main big poll were pro-Mccain, I’ll be curious as to how well Sarah Palin does in it.
Sorry I don’t have a link, so don’t take it on my say-so, but I thought I read somewhere that MT represents mostly older generation military readers, not the younger ones. I’ll see if I can find some substance and get to back to ya!
Highly suspect you are correct on this. The younger ones may read it, but are less likely to have a subscription. Can’t imagine the guys in Iraq or Afghanistan even have time. Still, Obama will do better if a reasonable percentage of the current and retired military support him. Doubt many of them have missed how badly the Bush administration has run pretty much everything.
Thank you Scarecrow. I always like your posts. I keep forgetting to thank you. Your perspective is very enlightening, always. ;->
dang. stove timer just went off. back sometime later…..
nice framing.
1. I’ve witnessed a redistribution of wealth over the past 7+ years. Somehow when the redistribution goes from low to high, it’s acceptable; vice versa . . . voila! socialism! entitlements for the unworthy or lazy. NOT!
2. Veterans returning from Iraq shall somehow be able to skip accreditation and instantly bloat the rolls of educators. That’s sure to fix the lack of qualified teachers. (McAsshat did not state whether these individuals would need a degree, training in education, etc. Somehow, I can’t believe that teachers would resent the hell out of this depiction of their profession as something for which everyone can easily qualify.
3. Did anyone notice that McAsshat’s definition of Sarah as a reformer never once approached a mention of ability to suitably fill the role of VP, or for that matter her intellectual capacity that reflects oh-so-well on his judgment. QUITE FRANKLY, this is his most egregious act–trying to foist upon the entire population of our country one so ill-equipped to perform.
4. Finally . . . “air quotes ‘health’” issues of fetus-carriers was nothing less than insulting to ALL women.
The “class warfare” comment really got to me. The Bush administration has implemented one of the most calculated “class warfare” in the history of our country. Follow the Money the last eight years.$.$.$.Defense.$.$.Oil Companies.$.$.$.. Banking.$.$..
McCain looked like a terrified rich white man last night. Redistribution of the wealth oh my!
Chris Matthews hammered on McCain’s unwillingness to acknowledge that Palin was out of line when she said Obama has been “paling around with a terrorist”. Matthews hammered away on this issue.
Matthews also mentioned that Joe the Plumber was mentioned I believe 32 times (could that be right?) He also said that Joe the Plumber was not licensed in Ohio.
McCain’s Most Despicable Debate Moment
although the condesceding ‘women’s “health”‘ gave it a run for the money
all the more reason I’m glad he’s flaming out.
But I want to see a meltdown
Yes. So many candidates.
even the TV puditeratti were calling it cruel. (the women’s “health” line)
Yes, it is indeed class warfare. For longer than I’d like to think about those with wealth, power and influence have waged class war on the rest of us. Now it’s our turn.
Class warfare? You’re goddamn right.
No war but class war. Now!
How do we do make that happen?
First thing ya do is stop buying from corporate chains if possible. Buy only what you need. If ya want something like a big screen teebee or other toy put money away for it rather than using a credit card. Stop buying stuff that projects an image. It usually ends up in the garage or some closet after a short period anyway, e.g., the latest and greatest exercise machine. If you want work done hire local business people rather than a corporate chain. Short version: look at where your money goes before spending it. Control impulse buying; put the money in a savings account instead. Pay off your credit cards, then cut all but one up, to be used for emergency purposes only, e.g., car trouble. There’s only one way to hurt a corporation and that’s in their revenue stream. Remember, every time you use a credit card the card company gets an average of 3% of the purchase price right off the top at the time of sale.
Then we go on to electing folks who will work for their constituents rather than the big donors, who tend to be developers in my neck of the woods. We start working on this part on 5 Nov.
Guess I’ll have to sit down and compose a primer on class warfare for the working class. Hmmmmmm.
yes, please

lolol!
I saw the photo with him and his tongue and hands on Huffington, but he was following Obama. I’m guessing the one with Palin was shopped from that. So, what was that about? Didn’t see it last night.
Apparently he got lost leaving the stage again, and was joking to Schieffer about it? He sticks his tongue out a lot, he’s getting creepy.
Getting?
I think we might have to request a McCreep Free Zone during dinner time, or start passing out barf bags here.
at the end of the debate the candidates and moderator jockeyed to shake hands. Sheiffer juked McCain by starting clock-wise and then shifting to counter-clockwise movement around the table – McCain was just doing an awkward “oopsie”. probably the most human side of him seen all night.
Kind of reminds me of when Georgie B. tried to get through that locked door.
But, John is not George Bush. I heard him say it.
Ah, geez!
It has bothered me ever since I saw that tape of Sen Blinky’s supporters in line waiting to see him shout complaints about socialism. And their complaining about income redistributation. So I pit that and “it’s bad for America” in a search engine. I found this.

shee-it! Two words. Hank Paulson.
No.
This is a current rightwing meme. There’s a whole conspiracy theory that has Obama as a Marxist Manchurian candidate, who will spend the US into bankruptcy.
or maybe he was just venting. this campaign has been a real drain on Mc3rdterm.
Still no mention in the MSM about the Iraqi war Vets who protested outside the debate last night. They wanted to come in and ask John McCain and Obama a few questions. But alas they were not allowed in. In fact one of the Vets was trampled by an officer on a horse. Amy Goodman has the story
As John McCain and Barack Obama prepared to face off in their third and final debate last night, outside the gates of Hofstra University, members of Iraq Veterans Against the War, backed by hundreds of demonstrators, protested at the campus gates.
At least fifteen people were arrested, including at least five members of IVAW, on charges of disorderly conduct. Nassau County Police on horseback trampled one member of IVAW, Nick Morgan, a veteran who served in Iraq for about a year. His condition is unknown.
The protest was organized by IVAW members Matthis Chiroux and Kris Goldsmith. Last week, Chiroux sent a letter to CBS debate moderator Bob Schieffer spelling out the demands of IVAW and demanding that at least two veterans be allowed entry into the debate to ask Senators Obama and McCain one question each. He did not receive a response.

Simply put, the wealthy have benefitted disproportionately over the past few decades. And this was mostly due to a system rigged in their favor by members of the wealthy ruling class. It’s about time they paid their fair share.
And some more lies.
Lots of craziness here.

Was Joe the Plumber really Joe the Plant?
Inquiring minds want to know….

Maybe that’s why Bush was here yesterday, I think.
McFlameout has hired a youngster as his new campaign advisor.
He’s doing well, just saw the commercial the kid did and even in today’s market, he scored enough to rent a clown.
“Whoa”
to be fair, isn’t all this a basic tenet of doctrinaire rethugism, though? That government (word spat out as an epithet) redistributes (word articulated with fear, loathing and hatred) the hard-earned personal positions of loyal Americans (word accompanied by chants of USA! USA! USA!). This is all basic rethugism. Cruel yes, but nothing new and nothing unique to McInsane. Grover Norquist makes a living off just this argument.
The rethugists I know even have a religious defense of their cruel logic: the gods command us to be personally responsible for our actions, so when bad things happen to us or we’re just poor, its ’cause we were irresponsible and the gods are punishing us, so government (epithet) should not redistribute (fear and loathing) the money of responsible to the irresponsible – to do so blasphemes Kali, or whatever supreme being control the wealth and governance portfolio in their pantheon.

I am from overseas, and I don’t get to vote in your election. I watched a curious thing yesterday. It must be a custom of yours. The president elect took an hour and a half out of his schedule to discuss domestic affairs with an angry gnome. What fortunate people you are that your leader-to-be is willing to sit patiently while a man clearly in the grip of early onset dementia ranted about diverse subjects.
Why, when people point to this incident as a matter of confession that the lefties want to redistribute wealth, doesn’t anybody in charge proffer the thought that the right wants to redistribute wealth, too. That they have been doing so for the preceding 7 1/2 years, that they have redistributed the wealth upward and it has cost every middle class worker apx. $2,000 of their annual income. That we are just trying to re-balance the playing field! Maybe it’s time the inconvenient truths were told.
Dispicable, yes. Dishonest, not so much. McCain was right out in the open on how he thinks the American class system should work. All for him and his millionaires; the rest of us can clean his toilet.
