Update below. WH Transcript.
The President of the United States did an ABC-sponsored, nationally televised town hall to answer a broad range of questions from ordinary citizens and select health professionals.
It was an extraordinary event, both for the importance of the topic and for Obama’s competence, with the President showing an impressive grasp of the entire range of health care issues. I’ve not seen anything like this in my lifetime.
For its part, ABC insisted on having Charles Gibson and Diane Sawyer, instead of informed, qualified health care experts, guide the conversation. That was a mistake, but not the worst of ABC’s offensive conduct.
Sawyer’s main contribution was to introduce her own uninformed biases/opinions in framing issues and introducing questioners. Gibson’s primary role was to reveal his own misconceptions and then literally read talking points from a Republican letter — an obvious ransom extracted after days of Republican whining about giving the President air time on a critical public issue.
Gibson’s other role was to interrupt the President every few minutes to announce a commercial break. The all too frequent commercial interruptions served as an apt metaphor for how private commercial interests demand our attention and extract their profits while limiting our ability to discuss critical public policy issues.
At one point, Gibson repeated a Republican talking point, fanned by ABC, about how an inexpensive public plan would induce employers to abandon health coverage (see my earlier post). He cited a Lewin Group study about how many millions would be affected.
By design, an author of the study was in the audience, presumably to reinforce Gibson’s point. Like any good analyst, he simply explained what the study actually showed — that if you assume a much lower cost public plan, and no other disincentives for "dumping" people, many employers would move their employees to the public option.
Obama had a ready answer, explain the disincentives, but instead of allowing him to have an intelligent exchange with a real expert to sort out the misconceptions — something Obama and the analyst could have easily done — Gibson intervened. After Obama’s response, rather than allow the analyst to follow up on this key point, Gibson interrupted to announce another commercial. Republicans hoping to preserve the misconception must have breathed a sigh of relief.
So we had this extraordinary event in which the President went before the nation and a live audience to answer critically important and sometimes difficult questions on a topic every American cares about. But instead of covering this event as the enormous public service it should have been, ABC chose to exploit the occasion to sell us Hondas and pimp for their own after-show local coverage and commercials.
In my area, the local station’s follow on health stories were superficial and silly. These local reporters simply don’t know the issues, even though New England/Boston is one of the most advanced centers of medical expertise and research in the nation. No real experts on the main topics were interviewed, but they did have several more commercials.
ABC has a story up presenting select quotes and videos and ABC’s spin. It reads like another Jake Tapper gotcha product focused on inventing meaningless concessions even though the President’s answers were, on all fundamental points, entirely consistent with everything he’s said in recent weeks and his most recent press conference. By the third paragraph Tapper tells us "Republicans do not believe the president made his case," followed by a quote from Paul Ryan whining about the lack of bipartisanship. Then we get this total fabrication from Tapper and Karen Travers:
“President Obama struggled to explain today whether his health care reform proposals would force normal Americans to make sacrifices that wealthier, more powerful people — like the president himself — wouldn’t face,”
What? There is no proposal by anyone — except those fighting reform — that "normal Americans make sacrifices" the rich don’t make; and Obama did not "struggle" to answer any of the questions. They just made it up.
So, did anyone watch it? Any reactions?
Update Thursday a.m.: Near the end of the main session, Gibson said they were running out of time but that the President had agreed to stay on to answer questions, so they would continue the Q&A during ABC’s Nightline, following the long break for local affiliates. Of course, the reason they hadn’t gotten all the Q&A into the main part was because of all the commercials.
So I waited through the pitiful local stuff, then watched Nightline. As bmaz comments below, apparently ABC had saved any discussion of the public plan option until then. In effect, ABC chopped it up, crammed in as many commercials as they could get away with, making America wait until near the end to show issues that many American’s find most interesting.
Also, we’re not going to use ABC’s packaged videos; they chopped up the Q&A into smaller pieces and sandwiched them in between commercials — apparently that’s ABC’s idea of a "public service."
After health care reform, I’m going to recommend media reform and breakup, starting with Fox and ABC to set the model.

Scarecrow, I would say you have summed it up beautifully. We are 40 minutes into the hour here currently. Obama’s mastery of the subject area is quite impressive. The only criticism I have so far is a true dogged dedication to the public plan. Gibson just announced that the public option would be brought up next (after the long commercial break naturally). I still bet Obama does not evince the determination I would like to see, but he has been superb in content.
I had no idea this would be on tonight (and absolutely no other reason to tune into ABC News). that said, sorry I missed it.
Thanks for the summary, scarecrow. I hope someone puts a clip of the good answers on youtube.
Holy crap. My local ABC affiliate just did a 60 second profuse apology for the “controversial” special on healthcare that rand on the network and promised that “unlike the network, we promise that our local coverage of the healthcare issue will be fair and balanced”. Freaking pathetic.
And that’s exactly why I watched The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. I had every confidence that ABC would screw this up, and I’m sorry to say that I was apparently correct.
Crikey, now I know why I didn’t see enough on the “public plan” in the special. ABC cut that part and saved it for Nightline. Am watching the discussion on Nightline now. Diane Sawyer railed about the horror of such a public plan and then asked a healthcare executive to talk about it instead of Obama. Now Gibson is berating Obama about it. Now this guy Lewin is talking about it. Now gibson saying many people will lose the coverage they love so much
This is a horrid and fraudulent discussion. Jeebus, we are doomed.
Didn’t watch. Was there any single payer representation at all?
Selise, when you wake up and read this, I replied to your last comment in my now scrolled-off post.
I was fast asleep. Pissed that I missed it!

Non-profit organizations
Main article: 501(c)
In the United States, some types of non-profit organizations, such as churches, schools and charities, are exempted from paying income tax. Conditions depend on the type and purpose of entity, defined in 26 U.S.C. § 501(c), sources of income, activities, and other factors. Other types of tax-exempt organizations include: amateur sports leagues, labor unions, farm associations, and groups of veterans or present members of the U.S. armed forces.
Under state laws, many of these same organizations may also apply for exemption from property taxes, sales taxes and state income taxes, although the rules vary from place to place.
[edit] Tax exemption to businesses
“Tax exemptions to specific businesses, especially that are considered part of Big Oil are often controversial and criticized as corporate welfare [1][2][3]. However, exemptions from property tax or other local taxes can also be used as a tool for attracting business to areas suffering from economic depression. In India, tax exemption to specified business are provided u/s 10A, 10B. But India provides mainly exemption to two kinds of industries-exporters and those who set up businesses in economically backward areas. Apart from this, businesses run by fully exempt trusts which employ all its money for social cause is also exempt from tax. The business of education is also almost tax free if the Income Tax department grants exemption to college or universities.”
MCLE INC. Not for Profit Law is a great read………..
Even intelligent successful self employed businessman who has been paying premiums for decades to BCBS, is unaware this corporation is tax exempt. His premiums co-pays and the like skyrocket over the years for his family and employees. Yet no one knows this insurer is tax exempt. The self employed business owners now gets real ill, can no longer work earn a pay and pay his insurance premiums. He and his family now lose everything? This is reality for many Americans. Now the government decides we are going to mandate that people buy health insurance from tax exempt corporations, and penalize the taxpayer using tax code by taking personal exemptions away, thereby coercing the citizen to enter into a private contract. This is corporate servitude when no cost control mechanism exists to control the escalating cost of healthcare, which has been subsidized by the insured for fucking decades. We already have socialized medicine and it is the citizen ho get the shit end of the stick from the corporations who while tax exempt practice adverse selection and legalized discrimination under the color of law, to benefit the corporate interest at the expense of life just as Dred Scott was relegated, in spite of the clear language of the Bill of Right, to slave status for the benefit economic benefit of slave owners……… Do you people see what is really happening here here! President Obama does get it!!!
I will not be posting any of ABC’s video clips. They’ve apparently chopped them up and sandwiched them between commercials, as a public service.
If we can put together a “highlights clip of our own, I’ll put that up.
Obama knows how they play this game. It’s been clear over the past few years that he’s ready for this crap, and many of his communications strategies are designed to head this stuff off at the pass.
Hopefully…finally…maybe more Liberals will realize that he’ll need as much support as he can get in order to get these changes through. It’s showtime, boy and girls.
thanks! read and responded.
Fascists talking points vs non-understandable lingo. I didn’t hear anything about the real reason healthcare is even an issue…poor and middle income can’t afford health care, period.
Good Morning Scarecrow, and THANK YOU. You are absolutely on fire these days!
The idjits apparently have no clue that they’d get more kudos and cred by donating time to the topic. They’re not worth the powder to… dab on their sunburned noses.
With pressiques like these, who needs enemas media.
excellent!
Yesss! And Scarecrow, blessings for helping us focus (at least for these minutes) on Obama’s competence.
you noticed also! refreshing, eh? ;->
I did. It is. How’s the move prep going?
Myself, I watched the alternative history, fictional documentary “CSA” last night. The commercials in it sound roughly about the same. Like the electric shackles for runaway slaves.

DISNEY IS DANGEROUS….they indocotrinate from CRADLE TO GRAVE
Scarecrow, I wish I’d known this was on. I’d have dug out my TV (it’s concealed in flower arrangements currently) and watched. Went to ABC, where I got message that my attempt had been aborted. Clearly not a Republican station after all.
From the update:
Ha. Those have been my two main issues for years, although I had them in opposite order, since once BigMedia loses it’s stranglehold in public discourse, people would rise up and demand the massive overhauls to the system that are needed. They would be easy at that point.
Whatever the case, I’m SO down with that, my man!
Well, wha’dya expect after the media hi-jacked the presidential debates?
They have no business in this area of conducting serious journalism, because there aren’t any left after Murdoch and others took everything over.
I wanna return to the League of Women voters or some other reliable and honorable unbiased group to do these things.
Can’t even listen to the friggin’ PRESIDENT OF THE UNTIED STATES OF AMERICA without commercial breaks.
UNTIED. Funny, in a heart-breaking kinda way. Thanks for that.
They sure do. “Snow White” and “Cinderella” spring to mind as the “model” for successful relationships and what one should expect in a partner. Been messing up little kids since I was a kid.
“And they lived happily ever after”. right.
Uhhhh…maybe the video clip wasn’t loaded yet when you left that? He’s talking about that exactly in the clip. And even if you can’t view it, the transcript is easily findable and you can see President Barack Hussein Obama understands your point.
Commercials pay the bills. For Health Care. Or Socialism. You decide.
You’re right, but also must factor in that those were the values/mores of the day. So not as sinister then as it may seem from here.
It was a typo, But I’ve found it apt in the past and I guess it is now, too. HA!

Thanks. So, like, no TIVO for video replays? (Like I know what TIVO is and how it works . . . bwahahahahaha!)
Thanks, Scarecrow. I didn’t even know it was on and watched the NCAA baseball playoffs. I appreciate your noting Obama’s expertise and competence. I’m convinced he also has intelligence and good intentions. I think those attributes are all we could have hoped for and that continued doubt and criticism, rather than support, can’t be helpful to the cause of universal effective health care.

Thanks for this. I think I love you. *g*
If you get “parts” include the end of life discussion if you can. Such difficult choices with alot of misunderstanding. Let alone where the most health care $$ are spent, often in a futile pursuit or mistaken intent to provide all things possible.
Who’s taken over the FCC? Things started going downhill on Clinton’s watch and went off the cliff with the hostile takeover by the Bushler Junta. NPR and PBS need major Stalinesque purges, to be sure.
Nonsense. Commercial are designed to do two things:
1. Distinguish similar products so as to compartmentalize the market, thus undermining competition and allowing the firm to charge higher prices. “Only my product will make you beautiful . . .”
2. Mislead consumers, by making borderline truthiness and misrepresentations to induce consumer decisions that move away from efficient market solutions. Efficient markets assume perfect information by buyers and sellers; false/misleading information leads to higher costs, lower quality.
A related effect is to make commercial-based enterprises, like television, profitable, so that it can become a vast wasteland.
Yup. Which is where, among other things, hospice can swing the balance. Just read that a Fargo ND hospice has just let go a dozen or so staffers. Difficult choices just got harder.
Yes. Obama’s discussion of end of life issues was very thoughtful. I hope we can find that; it was about the middle?? of the main segment.
Left ya one downstairs.

Trying to imagine Shrub in a forum like this. Yeesh…or McInsane for that matter. Wow.
I liked seeing that clip above, but after seeing this clip at the “Liberal” Huffington Post that says Obama “struggled,” I’m glad I didn’t see it. Would’ve driven me crazy to watch Gibson and Sawyer shill so much like that, and their questioning isn’t even “tough” which would be fine…it’s just so STUPID.

Oh you sweet thing, Barbara! well, I suppose we’re making progress. but we’re ready to drop in our tracks.
House is a dear wonderful place, but needed some extra touches to meet today’s code, so we’re very very fortunate to have been able to hold back some extra $$ by being truly miserly all year in anticipation.
Still not quite on the market officially, but close, and those who have seen it in person are drooling shamelessly. Not a fancy place by any stretch, but very comfy and graced with near-professional kitchen perks worthy of someone serious about “putting food by,” lots of windows, and a simple screened back porch guaranteed to drain away all the trubbles of the day, at least briefly.
As I type, sun streams in from the East, as well as – yes – Mr. Bluebird’s entreaties to the Mrs. to start yet another brood next to the garden, Acadian Flycatcher, Peewee, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, a whole squadron of hummingbirds that regularly come right up to our noses without fear, Goldfinches, Catbirds, Robins, Blue Jays, a family of Red-shouldered Hawks, Coopers Hawks & Sharp-shinned Hawks, Chimney Swifts, a polygamous House Wren arrangement, abundant amusing hanky panky within a Cardinal foursome, Hooded Warbler, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, House Finches, Downy & Hairy & Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Flickers and Pileated Woodpeckers, Chickadees and Titmice and grackles on their 2nd nestings, Killdeers next door. All those guaranteed daily, plus. The butterflyweed is in full bloom, purple coneflower, bee balm and milkweed starting to open. Don’t even think of getting me started on the Flutterbyes and bunnies.
Surely I’m already in trubble for interrupting this critically important thread. Suffice to say, our work is wearisome physically, but the working conditions are ideal. Thanks for the question. I feel better all ready. I hope you are settling in well from your move and getting some well-earned rest. We’re definitely looking forward to some of that also. ;->
Bonkers,
I have noticed that about Huffpo lately. Has Ariana reverted back to the dark side?

Adie, our home was similar to yours wrt trees, critters, buttefly and other gardens, spectacular sunsets, wind in the trees. It has pretty much broken my heart to leave it. But before I did, I honored David’s wish to die surrounded by all of that.
End of home decisions are a bitch, second only (perhaps) to end of life.
The bad coverage of Obama by the media is not the problem; despite this foolishness, the public is overwhelmingly in favor of a public option. Obama doesn’t need to sell it to the people – it is sold.
What needs to be done is hold Congress accountable for taking a position so at odds with that of the people. Every congressperson who is not in favor of the public option should be asked at every opportunity why she/he is not pushing for it in view of public opinion. The focus should be on individual congresspeople.
“See, whatchat gotta understand is the market works. Free enterprise has give us the best care on earth. Goverment can’t do this, and France does not exist — I know, I’ve been there.”

However, HuffPo’s own reporters have done a pretty good job.

Try taking quiet time just for yourself, close your eyes and reminisce about the good times. They’ll never leave you. You’ve earned that and much much more, dear lady. One day at a time…. You are a blessing to the world.
I hope that means at least some small thing coming from an avowed compassionate heathen. This poor tired old world needs help from all of us. Would that some could realize that simple truth and climb down from their self-erected pedestals to help the rest. It’s a mystery to me how so many can miss that simple concept. ;->

Some days are just so hard. Believing (at least generally, if not across the board) in Obama helps float my boat. That, and friendships here. P.S. Oops. Whining a bit.
Shared, on every point.
Some voices become frantic with impatience over Obama’s deliberate pace.
I see glimpses of multiple measured efforts to marshal public opinion in support of his aims. Where he succeeds, I hope people will have the grace to acknowledge his brilliance. I see no danger in that. He has Michele to remind him his feet still touch the same ground everyone else walks on.
Is it wisdom and solid knowledge of human nature, or is it sloth and lack of conviction that drives his engine of change?
I recognize the progressive jury is still out on the verdict, but I’m betting on door #1. ;->

Jane, Christy, Scarecrow ….. are not giving up.
Neither are we. MSM does not reflect my attitude. Yours either?
I thought not.
I think we have company. It’s worth being stubborn and keeping up the pace.
You are totally right on with your analysis. Obama was fantastic in so many ways, even if he didn’t answer the doctors’ questions and while they were planted, they were worthy of a response. Gibson and Sawyer were and are total idiots, but I’m really enraged by this whole fiasco; their and ABC’s treatment of the issue was scandalous and not in the way the right wants to describe it. I will no longer watch ABC for anything. I didn’t watch Nightline so I hope there can be some good videos on whatever was a positive statement.
I’m so grateful for the non-profit, tax exempt lesson; I’m printing that up to study; Lordy I’ve so many things I’ve printed up to study and the good stuff keeps coming. But the slant on BCBS is so important for us to understand.
Can’t find the line above – speaker or message number – about “the President get’s it”. The problem is that the media’s control, premeditated misinformation on all the issues cancels out whatever he gets, because the general public’s capacity to get it is nullified. And there are hundreds of ITS in this issues that desperately need to be gotten and the corporate media will continue to create an insidiously gross filter between truth/legitimate concern and the public.
While there’s plenty to be in despair about from last night’s crap, there is comfort in the president’s extraordinary analysis. There was one particular line – can’t remember which or the topic – in which he made a very strong, zinging statement on an issue that I’d not heard articulated but had had strong concerns about. I nearly jumped out of my seat with shock and ecstasy. Sure wish I could remember the line. Wish I had tivo, etc. Maybe there’ll be a script (without idiots Gibson and Sawyer) that has all the substance…….
Thanks again, Scarecrow for your ongoing mission; thanks to James Joyce for the NPO/tax exempt info. Thanks to sadlyyes for reminding us of who owns ABC and calling us to let them know about our disgust and rage.
Blessings to all,
See http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..id=topnews for WaPo article on SEnate testimony on how the insurance companies screw their customers. Some Truth gets through every now and then, at least part of the truth.
is there a transcript?
Can anyone list the so-called sponsors of the ABC newsless piece? If so, is it worth getting those folks on a list of places to boycott?
Also, because I didn’t watch the piece, were any of the ads for pharamceuticals? Surely that was a bit of a conflict of interest.
Lastly, how much of the crap that was asked by Gibson and Sawyer represents the kind of information we would WANT Obama to dispute so the wind is taken out of the sails of the opposition? Like, once and for all, to end the debate of stupid things that are getting in the way of true and honest debate and discussion?
Most folks distinguish price and quality by brand. Socialists want everything to be the least common denominator. If you want to eliminate commercials and go for Public Toilet Health Care, go with the Public plan; otherwise, go with Free Enterprise. Freedom always wins.

White House Comment Line: 202-456-1111 Voice your opinion and concerns!!!
ABC is doing nothing that the White House doesn’t want. The Obama Administration calls the shots or no show. He could have included a single payer advocate or a doctor from Mayos if he really wants real reform, but Obama didn’t even want John Conyers at his White House get together. He could have insisted on having other hosts. He didn’t. This was an infomercial. He comes off smelling like a rose and all the ire gets directed at ABC. We can’t let the president off the hook. He should be leading the fight for affordable and reliable care. He has 72% of the people behind him. But instead we get vague statements and not a specific plan.
And the emphasis on the “cost” of Medicare and Medicaid is verging on criminal. What about the “cost” of people dying from no insurance? What about the cost of losing love ones to cancer that should have had a cure years ago? What about the cost of the stress on the American workforce who work 10 more weeks than most European workers?
Don’t fall for all this managed democracy. We have a center right party as Bill Maher has noted led by a conservative guy. What was on last night was propaganda, smoke and mirrors, pure and simple. They are trying to direct all our anger away from the White House. We need to stay focused on both the Senate and the White House and, yes, the mealy mouthed crapola paid shills of the Fat Cats called the main stream media.
We are going to have to take to the streets or remain sheeple.
you of course are 100% correct

thank you thank you.
thank you for your clear sight and thank you for your clear words.
It was an extraordinary event, both for the importance of the topic and for Obama’s competence, with the President showing an impressive grasp of the entire range of health care issues. I‘ve not seen anything like this in my lifetime.
Seriously? We’ve spent the last 8 years watching stagecraft – the fact that Obama is better at playing his part than the blundering idiot he followed does not make this event extraordinary or Obama competent. I find Obama’s health care plan, as well as his constant courting of the press, superficial and lacking -though not silly.
indeed
I’d like us to try market capitalism, but in the health insurance area there isn’t much competition, so it’s broken. Thus, many Dems are suggesting the government do something to expand competition and, at least for the short-term, insure the uninsured.
You are for market capitalism, aren’t you?
They’ve made it clear they won’t vote for anything Dems would get credit for. That’s over.
Now we just get on with create a great reform bill and whipping everyone into voting for it.
The White House has NOW posted a transcript.
http://www.whitehouse.gov/the_…..e-6-24-09/
Also at TPM
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.c…..hp?ref=fpa
The private insurers are free to cover everyone, but they refuse. I guess the uninsured are just free to go bankrupt, lose everything and then die.
Maybe the reform bill should leave private insurers more free and just offer a competitor (plans) which enable consumers to freely(!) choose something better.
In terms of insurance the public option competes, but still sends patients to the same doctors who charge too much. Maybe we should also consider a direct competitor for them, more and more support for any care professionals who will work for salary instead of fee-for-service. That might require restricting subsidies to the uninsured who want a policy.
Or, maybe we shouldn’t ‘bother’ the private insurers with more new customers. Maybe we should just offer a public option (with some level of subsidy) and insure the uninsured with that. No competition, just insuring people the private insurers have already shown they don’t want.
We have options we’re free to take at this stage of legislating.
The system is clearly broken and we’re suffering the cost of that.
Agreed. Health reform, to Obama, means making for-profit business model of health insurance work. As they say in the Navy: “You can’t buff a t*rd.”
Just because Bush gets an F does not mean Obama gets an A.
you read my mind. I would love to know who sponsored the show. Were they supporting the Prez, or supporting ABC by offering noise to interfere with the message?
A foreign car company advertising during a discussion of US National Health Care? How’d that play in peoria?
Gibson lost me long ago, but reminded me again of the ditz he is during the debates “let’s say two profs are making $100,000…” much to the bitter laughter of the unwashed sitting in his audience. what a jerk. sawyer’s no better.
thanks scarecrow. recc’d.
