Sam Stein reports that White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs suggested that the President has been as insistent that Joe Lieberman make concessions for the team as he’s been with liberals.
Asked if Obama is as demanding of Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn), whose opposition to a public option and Medicare buy-in provision led to their removal, as he has been of progressives like Sens. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), both staunch supporters of a public plan, Gibbs affirmatively replied: "Yes."
"The president was clear with members of the democratic caucus, including independents who caucus with the Democrats," he said.
Oh. That would explain why Joe has been so downcast lately, hiding from reporters so he doesn’t have to explain how disheartened he is for having been forced to give up so many reform features that were really important to him.
And it also brings a new perspective to the New York Times report on Joe’s strange behavior yesterday:
Mr. Lieberman could not be happier. He is right where he wants to be — at the center of the political aisle, the center of the Democrats’ efforts to win 60 votes for their sweeping health care legislation. For the moment, he is at the center of everything — and he loves it.
“My wife said to me, ‘Why do you always end up being the point person here?’” he said, flashing a broad grin in an interview on Monday.
Poor guy must have been fighting back the tears as he said that, but like a man, he sucked it up.
Uh, Mr. Gibbs: Most of us can handle compromises, even losing when we don’t have the votes. We can come back. But I for one get really pissed when someone tries to BS me about what happened and who helped. And since the White House credibility is not very good at the moment, you might want to think about that.

OH Yes. Obama was SO “insistent”. He was SO insistent that health care reform has, yes, collapsed. It’s over. The best we can hope for now is no legislation at all.
Frankly, I think Lieberman is just taking the hits for Obama and a whole slew of Democratic officeholders in the Congress. I think that a whole bunch of these officials have been trying to figure out how to kill any real reform for sometime without publicly appearing to do so and Joe Lieberman is just an easy to kick around figure in front of the base who is doing favors he’ll get paid back for.

Of course Lieberman is providing cover for Obama. They have a symbiotic relationship.
And in exchange, he gets to keep his committee chairmanship? Last time I checked, there were three branches of government. If we had a real Senate Majority Leader (instead of a spineless little bitch), Lieberman’s next position on a committee would be in Siberia…

Obama made a calculation that it would be easier to get something that he could call health care reform, though it is not, by forcing the great number of Progressives in Congress to give up on real health care reform than it would be to get real health care reform by forcing a handful of asshole Senators to do the right thing for the benefit of the American people.
And when it failed, he planned to blame liberals and progressives and thereby eliminate them as a serious force in American politics. Obama and Rahm from the beginning wanted HCR to fail.

You make a good point, but the situation in 1980 was different. For one thing the corporations didn’t have as strong a lock on the government then as they do now. Also, at that time the Democrats had been in control of Congress for many years and people were ready for a change.
And this time Howard Dean will be much more prepared than Kennedy was against Carter.

Yeah, funny how the trolls make these assumptions. There was one yesterday who was quite nasty to me, on the stated assumption that I was comfortably employed and insured. I would see things his way when I found myself confronted with an unpayable premium or “lost” my insurance.

When push comes to shove Obama will have no hesitation in slipping on the jackboots for he has to protect the status quo and the positions of power and priviledge of the new fascist plutocracy.

Obama really had the opportunity to change the way the game is played in DC, so what does he do? So we’ve got a chief of staff who lives to insult the base but scampers up to Capitol Hill to pet and coo over poor lil Joey….a Treasury sec who’s nothing but the lunch order taker for GS…and a handful of Senators who obviously have zero respect for their President. Mr. Gibbs…it was Mr. Obama who enabled and empowered Mr. Lieberman. Had he not Mr. Lieberman would be a mouthy, no seniority, no chairmanship, who cares REPUBLICAN/Independent. We all know who conceded first and doomed real reform to the trash heap. Your employer. It is now my belief that your employer never had any interest any anything other than what Baucus shit out of committee. But thats ok.
