This may be the most devastating, and most deserved, piece of political journalism this year.
MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow calls out the numerous Republican hypocrites who "trashed the stimulus, and voted against it," and then exploited it by bragging to their constituents how great this money would be for jobs and economic development in their communities.
You’ve probably seen a few of these on news shows and blogs like ThinkProgess, FDL and others. But not like this. Watch and count . . .
As Rachel sums it up, the Republicans don’t care about honesty or policy or ever working with Obama and the Democrats. So asking them to behave responsibly is like trying to teach your dog to drive.
Grow up Democrats; face the music. Do it alone. You’re the majority. Kill the filibuster if they won’t let you use that majority. The country needs you to.

wow — simply stunning indictment of the party of no

Rec’d enthusiastically.
Without question one of her best segments ever. And that’s saying something.
She puts the rest of the anchors to shame.
Yes, she does, and she’s quite brilliant, too. But why hasn’t she been covering the difference between Medicare for All as a policy alternative and current proposals? No one’s doing that in the MSM except Bill Moyers.
She doesn’t advocate for specific policy, but she’s given Anthony Weiner what seems like an open invitation to come on to talk it, and he has.
I would love to have a transcript of this. Nice work.
Me too. They are a day behind right now.
Hooray from RAchel. The Krugman piece is terrific
Hooray for Margaret and Helen on Elephant in the Room is a Kangaroo. Fantastic! They give me hope.
Hope it’s snowing hard……. so there is no need for bon vogage

So why is Obama being such a wuss?
And that is the multi million dollars of donations question.
I have the most serious big time crush on Rachel Maddow. She’s smart, funny, and one of the best examples of what a news and opinion commentator can be. And she’s given us Kent Jones.
For which I guess she can be forgiven. I turn her off when he comes on. Yuk. To each his own, I guess.
I turn off Kent Jones too. I wish she’d get David Waldman on instead to give a report on Congressional kabuki.
What a treat – hypocrisy on parade!
Love Rachel.
This is a story?
Yes! I saw that last night and just had to tivo it. Then I showed it to my kids, then Mr Conniptionfit, then I went and got my next door neighbor to see it! I woke up thinking about this. I damn near wet myself last night when I first heard it! I actually counted the number of Republican hypocrites Rachel named trashing the stimulus and then taking credit back home: 21! It’s about damn time someone noticed!
This is great ,to bad no one will hear it except for a handful of political junkies.
Sort of up to us to spread this video…
Here’s the digg
Thanks twolf. Um….jeez, how do I say this? I’ve never actually used digg before and I’m not even sure what it’s for. Jeez, I feel like I just admitted publicly that I have holes in my undies….
The more votes (or diggs) a story gets on digg.com, the more traffic the post at FDL will get.
I thought we weren’t using Digg here any more, because they store content without giving appropriate credit…something like that. I think we’ve been using Spotlight instead.
Edit: I think the issue was that if you click on a link in Digg it goes to the story in Digg and not here. But maybe I’m wrong. I do know that we took Digg off this site months ago.
The problem is that most people could give a shit one way or the other. They view R’s and D’s as being one and the same. As long as they are working, and able to make ends meet, they pay little if any attention to politics.
I am amazed sometimes, at just how little, most people know about the workings of Washington, and what little they do know, or think they know ,they got from Fox.
I don’t think that the problem is that most people view the Ds and Rs as the same. Fox viewers certainly don’t think they are. The problem is that most people think that they’re different, though (with some exceptions) they’re not.
No basically there is no difference really , just different words coming outta their mouths, but it don’t matter what they say it’s all bullshit.
Bullshitter = Scatological Liar
I like it
But we gotta come up with a solution! Otherwise we’ll eventually just curl up in depression and end up feeling even more useless. None of us wants to waste our lives throwing ourselves at a brick wall that we can never affect. We aren’t the “take our ball and go home” types, nor are we the “destroy it if we don’t get our way in all things” types. So… what?
I guess it bears repeating. Support you local Progressive candidates whether it be for Dog Catcher, Selectperson, Mayor, State Rep or whatever. Get Progressives elected to as many offices as possible and pretty soon the strong, elected, Progressive base will happen.
Failing that, break out the pitch forks, torches and beat those plows into swords.
I agree completely, except maybe about the Fox part. I mean, I agree they’re slanted the way they are, but none of the networks give anything about “the workings of Washington”
It’s seems to me the Fox noise machine, has had much better success in getting it’s message across than any of the other media.
Fox is winning the noise war !
Every broadcast journalist — hell, every journalist — should watch this segment and be called to account. Why must we see this only on an obscure political commentary program? Why isn’t this in every Americans’ breakfast or dinner news digest?
Who wins by keeping this devastating summary of GOP hypocrisy from the American people?
Teddy P: Why must we see this only on an obscure political commentary program? Why isn’t this in every Americans’ breakfast or dinner news digest?
Got Air America Radio? We all really need to do something about getting another liberal radio outlet up and running….
To be fair to the media, Obama and the Democrats should be making much more of this. When Obama went to the podium yesterday to talk about the need for bipartisanship regarding HCR, his comments were far too measured.
If Obama were to call out the Republicans for this kind of mealy-mouthed politics at its worst when it comes to stimulus money, the media would cover it news cycle after new cycle.
Rachel neglected to mention that some Democrats did this dance too, voting in DC against the stimulus and then expressing to their constituents back home how pleased they were that the money was coming just in time.
I wrote this diary about Jim Cooper (DINO, TN05) on Nov 10, 2009:
Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN): Before He Was For the Stimulus, He Voted Against It
This is true… but the point she was making was ultimately that no matter what the R’s say, they’re NEVER going to vote with the Dems, so the Dems had better quit waiting for Republican cover… er, I mean bipartisanship, and just get on with it.
And it’s a valid point she was making, so long as we all also recognize that the Republicans didn’t screw up HCR. The sellouts among the Democrats did. The weak leadership that failed to get them in line on key issues and to support core principles and values of the Democratic Party did.
Well, yeah. But I think she was making your point, too. The Dems have to grow up and quit expecting the Republicans to give them cover for NOT moving their agenda.
The Democrats do not want HCR. They want money from the health insurance lobby, who have very deep pockets.
People, this is not about weak leadership. It’s about very effective lobbying.
It’s about very effective lobbying and a whole buncha two-bit whores…
Fixed it.
The point ultimately seems to be that the agenda of the Democrats currently dominating the Democratic Party isn’t all that different from the agenda of the Republicans, despite appearances to the contrary. They keep looking for cover and excuses to do what Republicans would do. Republicans, meanwhile, can’t just say “thank you” and expect to win in Nov. They have to play politics and call Obama’s goals “socialist,” though there’s nothing socialist about it. The whole thing is a bad joke.
I totally agree with you.
The current senate HCR scam bill is for all practical purposes a republican bill.
what we have in DC right now is a bad Republican Beer Commercial
Democrats = Too Lite Republicans
GOP – Too Heavy Republicans
there are no real progressives in DC at the present time
Yes, Republicans generally wrote the book on political hypocrisy in Washington. But let’s not forget it is the Democratic Party [the Wall Street wing presided over by Rahm Emanuel] that is now hell bent on going after Main Street. Obama Inc. is now about to do to Social Security and Medicare what Bill Clinton did to welfare, urban renewal and efforts to end poverty in America: put a much more “fiscally conservative” leash on them.
Consider these observations from Shamus Cooke over at CounterPunch:
It’s official: the Democrats are coming after Social Security and Medicare. All the backroom scheming and political conspiring is finally out in the open.
In an unusually long, 1,800 word editorial, entitled The Truth about the Deficit, published February 7, The New York Times — cheerleader for neoliberalism — gives its solution to the country’s debt problems. The main idea is summed up thus:
“To truly tame deficits will require serious health care reform [Obama’s plan slashes Medicare], the sooner the better. Other aspects of the long-term fiscal problem — raising taxes and retooling [reducing] Social Security — must take place in earnest as the economy recovers.”
Later the article is clearer: “And then there is Social Security. What is needed is a combination of benefit cuts and tax increases that preserve the program’s essential nature.” Of course those surviving on Social Security already live in poverty and cannot afford “benefit cuts.” Also, to make a dent in the deficit, benefit cuts to social security will have to be quite substantial, to the point where the program’s “essential nature” will be destroyed.
The New York Times acknowledges that such a course of action will be completely undemocratic and unpopular, but that politicians “must gather the political will to do what must be done…”
How can politicians destroy these cherished social programs in the face of such popular resistance? By trickery, of course. And this is exactly what Obama has proposed with his “bi-partisan deficit-reduction commission.” This idea puts Democrats and Republicans together to create a plan to destroy social programs. This way both parties share the blame, so that no one is to blame. The New York Times reveals Obama’s hidden motives:
“The deficit commission that Mr. Obama intends to establish could be helpful in breaking this logjam [resistance to cutting social security], by calling for necessary changes that politicians would be loath to broach without political cover.”
Of course Maddow almost never goes there, does she?
And I should also point out the reason the commission “experts” have been stymied so far [in the Senate] is that the filibuster was used and the Wall Street Democrats were not able to muster 60 votes.
Trust me: When the reactionaries gain control over the Congress come next January, progressives will be thanking their lucky stars for “obstructionisn” in the U.S. Senate.
Rachel is Awesome, but Ralph Nader was 100% correct. We don’t have two parties in this country. We have ONE Beholden Corporate Controlled Party, and it is like teaching a dog to drive to ask the Democrats to pretend to want to bring about needed legislation.
WE need to grow up about who and what the Democrats truly are.
Every politician that claims the stimulus does not work should immediately refund all stimulus dollars the was received by state / district. We should demand that it be returned now.
I too am suspicious of who is going after cuts in medicare and social security. Of course the trillions in government contracts can not be cut. Right?
Out of their OWN damn pockets!
Awesome!
Y’all are absolutely right! But what’s left for politicly tuned in citizens? We’re in this catch 22, where we know that our democracy has been seized by the corporations, our elected representatives are not working for us, nor being (mostly) paid for by us. The only real thing to do is demand publicly funded elections and ban corporate money of all kinds, but the only people with the power to make that happen (congress) are the very people who benefit from the current system. So how do we get around this? The only thing I can think of that doesn’t require torches and pitchforks (which most Americans are too lazy to take up anyway), is to primary the sons-a-bitches. Got a better, more effective answer? ‘Cause I really need one!
Rachel is my fave. I’ve been watching her faithfully since the show started. And c’mon you nit-pickers, stop with the kvetching already! Send this video to everyone you know, get it out there. Stop with the, ‘Well I don’t know, she isn’t perfect . . .’, okay, she’s not perfect, but until you find someone who is, good luck there, go with the good stuff she’s giving us. Go Rachel Go!
RM is great. Smart, funny, with-it, and with a top-notch research team. Nearly always worth watching and a breath of fresh air. KO is good, too, and I will always give him his props, esp for speaking out against W back in the days when it was next to impossible to do so without getting canned (Phil Donahue, anyone?). But other than RM, Bill Moyers, and sometimes KO and maybe Ed Schultz, who do we have spreading such truthful info?
Even my better informed friends, who always vote, just simply aren’t that interest in politics and don’t want to be “bothered” other than to vote. It’s a shame really bc we are at a very dangerous point.
I’m not sure what the answer is, either. Been discussed here ad nauseum. I’m always willing to march in protest and no doubt will do so again. But we’ve seen over & over & over how, when there are “real” (not astrotured) progressives rallies with huge turnout, they get little to no coverage in the media. the teabagger rallies got tons & tons of media coverage – with far fewer protestors showing up – because the rightwing media uses them to push forward their message (and, in many cases, it was Fox media that was sponsoring the rallies and paying for stuff).
So… RM is great; may she continue to report on tv forever. But, I don’t see much changing, sadly.
that darn rachel, how dare she use facts and pictures to highlight the gop hypocrisy! unlike chris who loves to go with his gut and his own analysis, rachel and keith both use those pesky facts gathered by good ol’ research.
unfortunately, it is preaching to the choir; and those who are so eager to believe the lies, thanks frank lutz for making it all too clear, only watch fox faux.
AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Citizen Scarecrow and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
Yes, great television and it makes us out here in the bankrupted grassroots feel all tingly…for about 10 minutes. Then we turn back to the reality that the opportunity to turn the economy around ended with the bank bailout and the stimulus. Now we wait two weeks for another photo-op and television event to get to healthcare…well, heathcare what??
I have said over and over again, that not enough banksters and shyster brokers jumped outta windows or went to jail. By 1933, everyone who had gotten fat offa the phantom boom of the 20′s was either dead or on a bread line and even the families of the oligarchy were feelin’ the pinch. There was not enough money ta buy off the new congress and FDR had 4 years (actually 100 days) ta structurally reform industrial capitalism. The oligarchy learned from that experience so when they had the chance after 2000, they created another boom and bust but this time they kept their brokers and shills behind their desks and consolidated behind the bailout that emptied the public treasury and left nuthin’ with which the peoples’ government could rebuild an economy.
Now we have massive majorities in both houses of congress and we wait for the fuckin’ plutocrats to come to a meeting to get healthcare reform done??!!! WTF??!!!
Obama not only dismantled Howard Dean’s DNC 50 state machine but he deflated his own election apparatus so now we have a political vacuum waitin for the most certain thermadore of this November’s elections. Obama used 21st century politics to get elected and he’s usin Clinton’s 20th century “triangulation” tactics to kill the Democratic Party once and for all. If the fascist Republicans make significant gains, they don’t even hafta take over either house just reduce the margins, Obama will be left to “triangulate” with the SS guards that take ‘im ta Leavenworth.
This is all predicated on the idea that Obama is really a dumb blond in disguise and can’t figure this out for his OWN self…what are the odds?
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION, A WAR IS NOT A CHOICE!!

Agree. Thanks. That gets me too! The patient, consternated sighs over how “Obama just doesn’t get it, poor guy.” HAH.
“This may be the most devastating…pieces of political journalism this year.”
Read the title in the background. “They’re not embarrassed.” Far less devastated.
Rachel Maddow and Scarecrow, there’s a pair to draw to…Poll after Poll show that your ideas are in the super minority. NO one watches
Rachel Maddow, her far left ‘talking points” turn off the majority of Americans. They’re stale! Scarecrow is beginning to sound like “Zsa Zsa” Huffington. Keep following the “yellow left road!”
[/rushlimbaugh]
[/Rachel Maddow]
Which polls in “Poll after Poll” are you citing?
No answer…
See? Wide eyed, barefaced, incapable of embarrassment, let alone devastation. Just like John Oliver’s republican interviewees in Hawaii last night. Wow, just…WOW!
Actually, “they” do watch Rachel Maddow. They’re always throwing themselves on the floor and kicking their legs in a bawl-baby tantrum over things she shows about them, and continually clench their teeth demanding retractions.
USA Gallup 39/55, Rasmussen 40/58, NPR 39/55, NBC-Wall St. 31/46
C’mpn, don’t let the facts get in the way of your views!
Oh, I forgot, NPR and NBC are “right wing” news sources!
So the question in those polls was: “Are your ideas are in the super minority?”
So, be pro-active! As I live in TX, my Senator does not listen, but that doesn’t stop me. Write your Senator, tell them that even if they are not up for re-election, that you want to know what they HAVE accomplished and remind them that voting NO is not an accomplishment. Tell them that if they come to your town and have an open meeting (not a special donor or select group of cronies) you will attend and will ask that exact question!
PS, go to TRMS and tell her how much you approved of this “outing of the GOP”
Twolf1 do your homework…! I guess that program “No liberal left behind” did not work in your neck of woods!
You want me to find links that support your argument? Shouldn’t that be your job?
That’s too hard for him to do

This is the short form of an article found at http://thinkprogress.org/touting-recovery-opposed/ The website provides exact quotes, citations with sources, and voting records. Fascinating reading.
The following members of Congress each voted against the stimulus package. Most made strong statements in opposition to the funding. Each then went on to praise the program for providing funds to keep state services running, to start up building projects, and to support new programs.

Add our failure of a Representative, Aaron Schock of IL-18. He went to attempt to claim credit for a 400,000.00 grant for our police department that was included in the Omnibus bill of 2009—which he voted against.
Nice, Rachel Maddow really cuts thru the crap. Crap is about the only thing that appears to be “shovel ready” in Washington.
Message to Democrat incumbants: Ignore the Republicans and fix the country or primary challeges are heading to your home district.
Rachel is merely politicking;which always means that the person who does that is casting the narrowest look possible.
To obtain an elucidation in a point of time, widest-longest look must be cast.
A wider or widest look wld reveal that the one or two% who own 98% of america own also congress to that degree+. So, i conclude [u may draw ur own] repubs play out a role assigned them by their owners.
Of course, they all want to be reelected. This is the only area in which voters matter! From which arises the finger pointing.
But if any changes comes from the old system, all wld have to be approved by people who own america.
And the owners of america may or may not drop a few crumbs for nonowners of america. tnx
She was outstanding!
But FDL, you have to follow up with a clip of what she said next.
She handed the Dems ass to them over their chronic fantasy that any Republican would ever, EVER join them in a vote on anything. And to buck up and lead!
Then, compared/blasted Maine’s two Senators for not having the guts to speak out against the Tea Party Republicans hate-mongering as did Margaret Chase Smith, who so eloquently and boldly stood up against McCarthy.
The best line came a few weeks ago to one of the Dem senators. Maddow said in reference for the “one more change for Rethugs to work with DummyRats”:
“….umm, I hate to spoil the ending for you…but they won’t….”
- Maddow
Really outstanding. One by one she and her team cut these hypocrites off at the knees. Republicans trying to have it all ways.
Here is Senator Voinovich’s most recent email
ssue 29
The REAL Inconvenient Truth
Currently, the U.S. Debt is estimated at: $12,264,478,112,700
Your share of today’s public debt is: $39,934
Spearheading Debt Reduction Task Force Legislation
Since coming to the Senate in 1999, Sen. Voinovich has called on Congress to address reform of the tax and entitlement systems. To that end, he has introduced the Securing America’s Future Economy (SAFE) Commission Act each Congress since 2006, saying that our increasing national debt is the biggest challenge facing our nation today. For too long, Sen. Voinovich felt alone in the desert in his calls for reform, but this year he co-sponsored the Bipartisan Task Force for Responsible Fiscal Action Act introduced by the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Budget Committee, Senators Conrad and Gregg, which was closely modeled after his SAFE Commission bill. In the past few weeks, Sen. Voinovich has been pleased to see the fiscal wake-up call being heard throughout the country. He even met with President Obama in the Oval Office to stress the urgency of passing this legislation. Three days later, the president publically endorsed the Conrad-Gregg statutory debt commission. Unfortunately, the bill came seven votes shy of passing. President Obama announced during his State of the Union Address that he would be creating a debt commission by Executive Order (E.O.). Although Sen. Voinovich would prefer a statutory commission through the legislative process to tackle the fiscal challenges facing our nation, he is acutely aware of the urgency of the situation. Sen. Voinovich looks forward to learning more about the commission the president is proposing, but is still hopeful that Congress will act to pass the Conrad-Gregg statuory proposal.
Fighting Against a Fiscally Irresponsible Approach to Health Care Reform
On Christmas Eve, Sen. Voinovich voted against Senate passage of the Democrats’ so-called health care reform bill. The $2 trillion dollar bill that passed without a single Republican vote would raise taxes by more than half-a-trillion dollars, increase premiums for health insurance, place additional burdens on states, and threaten the health care choices that millions currently enjoy. As a former governor of Ohio, former chairman of the National Governors Association and past president of the National League of Cities, one lesson that Sen. Voinovich’s more than 40 years of public service has taught him is, if you cannot afford what you have now, you cannot do more. The national debt has exceeded $12 trillion, and – at this rate – will double in 5 years, and triple in 10, with deficits as far as the eye can see. The United States has amassed a staggering $70 trillion in unfunded obligations over the next 75 years, an estimated $600,000 per American household. Sen. Voinovich took to the Senate floor four times in December 2009 to remind his colleagues and the American people about the fiscal realities of this bill and the disastrous toll it will take on the U.S. economy. At a time when Ohio’s unemployment rate is at 10.9 percent, new health care legislation should strive to help Americans and the economy, not punish. Paying for health care reform by placing additional financial burdens on American families and small businesses will further impede our economic recovery. Sen. Voinovich does not believe this is reform, and he certainly does not believe this is what the American people are asking for.
Keeping in Contact with Ohioans
In today’s 24-hour news environment, providing his constituents with timely information is a top priority for Sen. Voinovich. That is why he has sought new and innovative ways to share what he is doing directly with folks back home in Ohio. In addition to his Senate Web site, http://voinovich.senate.gov, Sen. Voinovich regularly updates his official congressional YouTube channel, which he launched last year. Located at http://www.youtube.com/senvoinovich, his channel showcases recent video from Senate floor speeches, press conferences and television appearances in real time. A few of the site’s current highlights include Sen. Voinovich’s reaction to President Obama’s State of the Union Address, his most recent fiscal speech, an interview with Fox Business Network, and his renowned “Pac-Man” speech – which was highlighted on Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show as the “Moment of Zen.” In addition to viewing videos, visitors can also comment, share and subscribe to Sen. Voinovich’s channel and link to his official Web site. As Sen. Voinovich serves out his final year in the U.S. Senate, he remains intent on holding himself accountable and keeping his constituents updated on his work on their behalf in Washington.
——————-
There is more. Voinovich is going to try hard to fake a history of being fiscally responsible. Even though he voted for two unnecessary wars that were not paid for except in blood and treasure
Great clip, but it’s talking to a very small audience. Too bad Brian Williams on NBC Nightly News can’t run this in its entirety.
I wrote about this last night too, then cross-posted at The Seminal just a bit ago. I found it every bit as riveting.
For people interested in what she said, in my post I transcribed part of her remarks at the end of the segment. For a substantive list of the GOP hypocrits she calls out, you can go here.
Glad there is a You Tube of the clip, I had to link to the video on FDL originally!
You did happen to notice that little logo in the left hand corner of the YouTube I trust?
Yes, and I’m so glad FDL made it. I hadn’t known it was available, so originally I linked to the MSNBC video site, since I couldn’t embed theirs.
nicely done scarecrow, youn continue nailing it
I have one problem with eliminating the filibuster, we are not going to always have the majority, nor will we probably have it for long
we need to be cognisant of that fact before we get rid of it
Turned into a homemade campaign ad against Mike Castle for Chris Coons WATCH.
Even more infuriating: this will never show up on broadcast news. The corporate owned MSM will never run this story, and lazy journalists will never pick it up. And so – this will be a secret among RachelWatchers. Foxwatchers and the rest of America will never see it and never get it.
LOVED this segment of TRMS! I think she should have used the Obama interview on “partisanship” as a prelude. It would have had a much bigger impact.
A great piece showing the hypocrisy of the Republicans. Too bad she stopped there; she only provided half the story. How about:
- Dems railing about the Patriot Act and then voting to extend it
- Dems complaining about holding “enemy combatants” indefinitely without trial at Gitmo and then adopting the same policy (oh, but maybe someday we’ll close Gitmo as if the building was the problem)
- Dems saying Bush was a tyrant for warrantless wiretapping and then having the Obama Administration say that Americans enjoy no “reasonable expectation of privacy” with there cell phones that the government is now tracking even when not in use
- Dems complaining that they want the rich to pay their fair share and the middle class shouldn’t pay a dime more and then Obama declaring that he is agnostic about raising taxes on the middle class
- And on and on.
This is not a R vs. D issue. This is an incumbent issue. Once elected, these people feel as if they are appointed for life, because all too often they serve as long as the Supreme Court Justices do. We need to throw them all out: Rs and Ds alike. Then we need to fix election laws to prevent this corruption from occurring again.
