Watching Rachel Maddow’s recent reporting on efforts to create momentum to include a public option in the health care reconciliation, I had assumed she realized Congress was just pretending and only a miracle would get them to behave responsibly.
But Friday night’s discussion suggested Rachel did not know, or had forgotten, that neither the Senate nor the White House ever seriously considered allowing a public option to be part of the reform bills.
Chris Hayes correctly described the scene as a game of Clue, in which the game is structured to conceal who killed the idea. But unlike the board game in which you gradually eliminate suspects, Congress the leadership seems dead set on making everyone in the Democratic Party look guilty.
We have the Speaker of the House unable to explain why, when she controls the content of the initial reconciliation bill, she can’t include the public option because the Senate won’t vote for it.
We have the Majority Whip in the Senate issuing conflicting clarifications that it will whip for a bill without the PO, or no, with the PO, even as the Senators secretly urge Ms. Pelosi not to force them to vote either way.
And we have the President of the United States hiding from his own dishonesty in both publicly promoting the idea with his supporters while directing his aides to prevent it from ever coming to pass.
I guess next we’ll hear it was Jane Hamsher, in the blogger room, with the whip.
It’s all disheartening to watch. I’m frankly more sympathetic to the predicament imposed on Nancy Pelosi by this unprincipled White House and the feckless Senate leadership. But make no mistake. Not one of the Democratic leaders in Congress or the White House has been honest or courageous enough to be straight with us. Is it too much to ask they stop lying?
The current plan is for the House to take a dive. They’re expected to vote for an unpopular Senate bill at the risk of their careers. In exchange, they get to vote on a reconciliation fix they fear will not be sufficient to save them, while leaving out key elements they know they’ll need to sell the plan.
They know most of the "liberal" Obama supporters expect them, not the Senate, to take the risks, since no one is demanding the Senate pass the original House bill and fix that if needed. Once they adopt the Senate bill, House members have no assurance the Senate will follow through and enact the promised fix, and they suspect many in the Senate, and probably the White House, don’t care if the House takes the hit.
The truth is, the Senate and White House will force the liberal House to bear all the risks, but no matter what happens, Rahm Emanuel will call it a "win."
Rachel is right: Nancy Pelosi should call the bluff and put a strong PO — a Medicare buy-in available through the exchanges — in her reconciliation bill. Then let the White House carry the burden and the risks of getting its signature agenda proposal through the Senate. That would be a great "win" for Rahm and his boss, but they need to earn it.

“Is it too much to ask they stop lying?” Yes, because for most of them it’s just the same as breathing.
Depressing, but helpful. Thank you Scarecrow.
I don’t think anyone likes their senator. A lot of people like their Representative. I hope Pelosi protects her people and lets the senate prove once again how much it hates regular folks.
Pelosi should just do up a stand-alone reconciliation bill with Grayson’s Medicare buy-in available in 2011 and on the exchanges with subsidies when they kick in. The House has been asked to take too many hits already. If they let the White House and the Senate throw them under the bus while they celebrate with their lobbyist money, they are insane.
I’ve heard the comment (not really a joke) several times that in Washington the Democrats and Republicans may be peers or colleagues or adversaries, but that the Senate is the ENEMY.
Let’s see this time if the Democrats can remain united enough to make the Senate a working chamber of Congress.
Somebody made reference to “Hamsherian clairvoiance” this week and I didn’t know what they were talking about. I just thought everybody knew this stuff all along.
Color me surprised — it’s not like you had to be the Amazing Kreskin or anything. Wasn’t it obvious?
It’s obvious the glaciers are melting too, but . . .
They’ll find Jane’s whip in the library behind the encyclopedias before that happens.
Unfortunately, I think Pelosi is where she is because she won’t take those kinds of risks. It’s too bad, too, because it might just be the thing that saves her party’s majority status this year.
I remember way back in May or June I think, it was reported that a BIG fundraiser was being held in the Bay area for Pelosi by some Healthcartel lobbyist. I knew then that someday, someway, Pelosi would be called upon to stab the Public Option in the back.
Here we are.
I put this link from David Sirota in a comment on Gregg Levine’s article. It’s from September. That’s when I figured out that we weren’t likely to get much help from Pelosi when push came to shove.
When I saw the clip of Pelosi announcing there would be no public option in the bill, she looked really happy and relieved that they had managed to find a way to keep it out. Body language doesn’t lie, she does not want a public option.
I think she should be impeached for refusing to uphold her oath of office.
She should be impeaching the terrorists, but instead she is aiding and abetting them. It makes me sick to watch. I am even more disgusted with her today than when they OK’ed torture and illegal spying, and I did not think that was possible.
If this is how the Democrats behave, they deserve to lose, even to the lunatic sodden Republican party. Miss Pelosi should remember Massachusetts.
Like many people whose isolation from society at large has made them delusional, the Democratic leadership think that the problem with Massachusetts was that they just didn’t try hard enough. That link is from January, BTW. Nothing in their attitude has changed since that I can see. Unfortunately, it’s going to take losing an election to make them comprehend, and probably more.
3rd Party anybody?
You betcha! I think it is the only way.
Are you going to a coffee party meeting today? There was an interview of the founder on Rachel’s show last night.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/#35846586
It looks pretty interesting so far.
I signed up for their Facebook page. I think I need to start a Tequila Party.
What a great idea! I hope you follow through on it and keep us posted on your progress. Will you also be in favor of legalizing marijuana? I’d vote for that.
I signed up with a local coffee klatch this morning. Then I decided I would rather stay home and have a beer with my lunch then drive over to Oakland for some free pizza with tea and political conversation. I have insane hours, waking up at one or two in the morning, so by mid afternoon I am ready to go to sleep, & I start drooling for my daily bread in bottled beer form. Plus I was worried I would skew their sample. I am great at throwing things like that off, so I justified staying home by planning to go next time.
If she is modeling this after girl scouts (did I suggest that?) then I have a pretty good idea what to expect for the next meeting. The first four meetings will be for training and setting up new troops oops I mean groups.
I am not so good at doing it, but I am terrific at signing up and encouraging others. It is a little thing I learned in scouting called community organizing. So, go for it. You can ask me for help.
That’s like asking who killed Julius Caesar.
And much like Julius Caesar, the public option had about 23 stab wounds in it delivered by more than a handful of politicians.
I love RACHEL but the cisco thing has got to go kinda makes her look like a salesperson…..
All commercial TV hosts are sales people.
I am sure if you send her a really huge donation she would be happy to get rid of the “Crisco thing”… I mean really big.
A rock-solid sanity devoid of discontinuity is the benefit and result of ceasing to lie to oneself and others. If one follows the bare logic presented as he defines his terms, M. Scott Peck did a great job of explaining it to us all– in plain English– in the book, People of the Lie. When that book came out, there was a collective gasp. I realized the depth of a problem Peck saw in Washington to motive him out of conscience to commit his words to such a public record and, therefore, serve as a warning. So, here we are dealing with the result and there are others stark-raving mad enough to attempt to slather on more lies and serve it up to us like it is some kind of sumptuous desert. It is no such thing but death itself. It is poison.
In an different way, she just okayed torture and spying again… does anyone really think the insurance companies will just slink away and stop denying pre-existing illness and stop rescinding coverage magically in 2014?
I don’t… they know exactly how to game the system… espcially since they wrote the majority of this legislation…
And with regard to how it’s been handled… it has clearly been a publid option shell game… all orchestrated by the White House, doging and weaving, bumping and grinding and hiding it every step of the way…
“Look… it’s over here! Hooray… we ALL support the public option! Ooops, no, guess it’s not there after all… but we all really, really support the public option…. oh, is that it over there?… no, I guess that was just a mirage!”
Insurance companies are NEVER going to give up. You don’t understand sociopaths.
We could change the constitution and they’d hire the current SCOTUS to decide we can’t change the constitution.
Is Rep. Pelosi representing her constituents or the K-STREETERS??? Follow the influence peddlers money and you will see from the HEAD SHED on down to the HOUSE & SENATE the FIX is in. Just more noise then a watered down piece of crap of a bill from my party (Democrats), THE PARTY OF CAN’T!
My brother in law is a classic liberal. We were toasting the death of the Republican Party after the last election. Now we just need to get rid of the Democrats, I said. After a polite chuckle he just looked at me like I was crazy.
An incredibly well-written piece. The author is absolutely correct, in that Pelosi should insert a public option in the reconciliation bill and force the Senate’s hand, once and for all. I am sick and tired of the spineless wonders we voted into office NOT doing what Americans want—in this case, force competition through a public option down the throats insurance executives so that their companies will never again gouge folks in this country with premium charges so that they (we) cannot afford health care. Also, the author is right about those in Congress stumbling upon one another in order to explain why the public option cannot pass. Get ‘em all out of office.
Well, they obviously think including the student loan thingy is the equivalent of throwing us a bone………….and we should be HAPPY!
Meanwhile our tax dollars go to overpriced ( and I mean OVERPRICED) insurance corporations
There are a lot of congresscritters who will be unemployed next year, just because of this kind of crap. (That will, inevitably, include some of the good ones, and exclude some of the bad ones.)
I wish they’d remember who’s actually paying for their salaries and benefits.
Unfortunately, they think they have to have those big cash donations to their campaigns in order to win those elections. It’s as if the votes still don’t really count… just like in 2000 and 2004.
Those Diebold machines …
That last paragraph…
pretty much sums it all up. I’m not holding my breath, though.
However, I sign every petition that comes my way, and then tweet them or facebook them or both.
game of chicken going on
The real story is that a naked Rahm Emmanuel confronted Pelosi while they both were showering in the Congressional bathhouse screaming at her that she and the Prez’ careers would be finished if she did not get on board. That was the day before she made the statement that everyone should vote their conscience and damn the electoral consequences. The moment she made that “bizarro” world statement you should have known the fix was in!
I hope everyone is writing to Rachel — she does read her e-mail.
Jane, any way you can get on there again?
Chris Hayes “who really put the knife in?”
Rachel Maddow “maybe their being told not to include it (Public option)”
Chris Hayes ” The administration has sent every conceivable sign aside from saying “oh sure we’re for it” that they are NOT actually for it. If you want to look at whose feet do you rest this on. It is the White House. At every conceivable opportunity when they could have intervened on behalf of the PUBLIC OPTION they have very very ostentatiously CHOSEN NOT TO.”
Can you spell JIMMYCARTERVILLE? Obama waited too long to do the right thing and only after the polls specifically told him voters were concerned with his support. He may have waited too long.
You’re implying he’s NOW supporting the PO?
I’m not seeing it.
Obama never intended to the “right thing”. He was a sellout and corporate slut from the get go. Not to mention, ultimate con-man…and pathological liar of the highest order!
ummmm… hate to break it to you, but he still hasn’t “done the right thing”…..
He is very noticeably NOT fighting for a strong public option…
The deceit of Obama is as great as that of Bush II. Mr. Bipartisan is the one holding the bloody knife.
Et tu, Obama?
It is simply amazing to me that anyone believes that those in power want any kind of a counter weight to the insurance industry. Not to mention the gifts to the pharmacutical and hospital industries.
None of those in power can be trusted to do anything to help the middle or working classes in this country.
You are right the insurance industry is very powerful. One thing that I’ve been working on lately is to use the insurance industry against another powerful group. The gun lobby.
You’ve heard about these “Open Carry people”? Where they bring their unconcealed guns into Starbucks or other businesses? I’ve been contacting insurance industry experts trying to see what their response is to this action. What is interesting is how nobody will talk about this. None of the companies will tell me who their carrier is so I can write them and ask what they think of this development.

Who killed the public option? Well, who killed democracy itself? Could it be Wall Street and the Bilderbergers who own and operate both the options afforded the public and democracy?
Nah. That would be something the 9/11 Truther wackos would suggest.
That would be a…conspiracy!!
And as much as I still love Rachel, what the hell has happened to her of late? She not only once delved deeper into crony capitalism in Washington than anyone in the mainstream media [save for a few piercing special comments from Keith] she regularly named names. Now, increasingly, with respect to health care and much that revolves around the ruling class and the economy she sounds like just another, love me, love me, love me, I’m a Liberal, “progressive”.
Did she a get memo from the brass at MSNBC cautioning her as to just how far a member of the loyal opposition can go? You know, on the actual fucking air?
Or [sigh], perhaps, as Grace Slick once belted out, “the idiots have won”
I’m back in hibernation, alas. I just can’t bear to watch it anymore.
But I do thank God [one of them] that Jane and so many others like you are still around to fight back.
And I’ll always have “the Sixties”, I suppose…
Yes, I agree! We Progressives still have Jane in our corner! – The rest have been assimilated…
I believe they are afraid and rightfully so of having a socialist insurance system put in place. I mean really really afraid of physical harm to themselves or at least political violence. The public option is potentially the straw that would break the camels back. Passage of anything is still up in the air I believe and if what we have now is passed the howls are going to be beyond what we have ever seen before. This is going to get very very ugly, without the PO. PO is revolutionary. Make no mistake. With the PO I would expect blood.
Yeah, the excise tax and the mandate which establishes the IRS as a collection agency for private insurance companies are certainly big winners in every poll which explains why the Ds are avoiding the public option. The mere fact that poll after poll shows a vaguely defined PO always brings approval for the so-called health care reform just proves the polling must be inaccurate.
We probably should accept the fact that everything that is ever done will have detractors including a declaration that the world is round and move on. There are plenty of conservatives that consider a PO the only possible justification for the mandate and some who now openly acknowledge that a medicare buy in is better still. Satisfying the loony right is a fools errand.
The insurance companies are the single largest group against the PO and they are spending money to that effect.
Oh balderdash!
Public Option is less “socialist” than Medicare. When I pay money to buy a product for fair market value how is that socialism?
I can see the subtitle at CNN……
Liberal Intransigence Killed The Public Option?
Don’t kid yourself…Maddow definitely “has a clue”…and so does her “sidekick” Olberman! Both are playing the “who done it game” and are working against Progressives at every turn. I have NO respect for either at this point or ever for that matter! Both are Obama bots and kool aide guzzlers to the extreme.
Don’t kid yourself…Maddow definitely “has a clue”…and so does her “sidekick” Olberman! … I have NO respect for either at this point or ever for that matter! Both are Obama bots and kool aide guzzlers to the extreme.
I sadly agree. Both know that it was Obama’s dirty little side deals that killed the PO. The didn’t have to call him out on it. They could have just played it straight. Report the facts, forget the
liesspin. The chance of that happening is ZERO. The fix is in. The rest is theater.
Medicare is terrifying.
I’ve always been a supporter of mob rule.
But forcing people to buy insurance at whatever unregulated prices they and the government are gouged is a requirement.
Only if you’re Rush Limbaugh threatening to move to Costa Rica (which has government provided health insurance) if Americans get it.
Rush has other reasons for liking poverty stricken Central American countries. sordid reasons – he packs lots of blue pills.
The PCCC is reporting at least 51 senators will vote for a public option if the house puts it in the reconciliation bill.
We need to be sure Pelosi knows it is in her hands. She can make HCR significantly better by providing competition to private insurers that profit by denying care.
The clearest warning and an example of what American voters need to do to extricate themselves from the ever more tightening transpartisan noose around our necks can now be followed, as it happens, in ISLAND.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=du8DZ2snSgs&feature=player_embedded
is it not at least possible that there is no public option in the reconciliation package because the votes are not there in the House to pass it?
something i can’t quite figure out – will it be possible to offer amendments from the floor when the reconciliation bill comes up for a vote in the House?
I keep hearing people call the Dems “spineless,” but I don’t see it. They clearly know what they’re doing. When there’s massive popular support for the public option — i.e., a mandate from the people — and they still act like it’s impossible to “get it through,” that’s not spinelessness at work, it’s deceit.
The whole question for in-charge Dems is how to do the dance of seeming to support the public option while making sure it never actually happens. Even alleged allies like Eli Cummings are getting sucked into this. They all know who their (corporate) masters are, but they’ve got to appear populist as a sop to their constituencies and to maintain the absurd distraction of Us (Dems) vs. Them (Repubs) when it’s really Dems & Repubs united vs. Us (the people). We will never get anywhere with these elitist/careerist bastards in place. Obama got elected as a change agent because the electorate was fed up with the shit pouring all over us out of DC; the next round of elections may show an even angrier electorate, and both Dems and Repubs had better take note.
I agree with you 100%
“Spineless Democrats” is a Bush era term. The correct one these days is “corrupt Democrats.”
It’s a common misconception that snakes don’t have spines, they do indeed.

Three coin-hungry Democrats in the corporate-greed-fountain, which one will the corporate-greed-fountain bless? Will it be Reid? Will it be Pelosi? Or will it be Obama?
Make it me, said Harry, for I have been scuttling progressives for years…
Make it me, said Nancy, for I took Bush impeachment “off the table” and I just took the Public Option “off the table.”
Me it me, said Barack, for I campaigned as a peace candidate and I have escalated the wars on the Afghanis and the Pakistanis, and I have campaigned for Single Payer and the Public Option and now have flushed them into the corporate cess-pool…
Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who’s the most corrupt corporate Democrat of them all?
You decide…
Nicely written.
It was amazing seeing the energy go back into the Party when it seemed that the Public Option had a chance. To hear Speaker Pelosi throw it out without a real explanation makes me wonder if Hillary wouldn’t have been better. I really don’t think Obama has a chance unless the Republicans put up someone so horrible were back to the lesser of 2 evils. Then again I don’t care how intellectual Obama is. With Hillary you new what you got. A stone cold politician that knows how to fight and doesn’t give a crap about Republicans.
Nancy Pelosi went on Crooks and Liars blogsite and blatantly lied last year about this entire healthcare scam. She has been a terrible leader of the house. Perhaps it’s all that plastic surgery that has given her a beard that has distracted her from her written promises.
That is unnecessary.
Yes, all that plastic surgery is unnecessary and so is all of her lying. Going to a blog and outright lying, and people still think these politicians should be treated with respect? Don’t think so. If they are lying hypocrites, it’s past time they were treated like they deserve.
That’s right – lower yourself to make a point not worth making.
These people have earned our disrespect.
Mandate insurance for all and withhold the one popular cost saving PO option because Obummer says no and has some unholy private deals with health industry- like plenty of fascism folks? Screw that.
Just like they work to take over public education- privatize it and then will CHARGE for it- transparent Race To The Bottom is everywhere—-forcing us back to the middle ages. Sending all our jobs out of the country. What have they done to America? They are traitors. Throw the sold out shits out of Washington. Can ‘t stand to HEAR Pelosi, Read, Dodd, Durbin and Obama. They are perverse elitists. Its time for the left to stand up. Take these awful hurtful policy votes and cram em. And your next campaign? Don’t even think about another run. But I’m sure that has been anticipated.
We need to march on Washington and kick some ass. Just like those students in California.

Pelosi does not appear to be particulalry bright, she is certainly not articulate, that is the baseline. Neither does she come across as having a well thought out set of political principles, she seems to be for war and and doctrinaire liberalism although we really have no clear idea what she believes. She is basically just a politician raised on that artform.
The point is that she differs not at all from the rest of the doctrinaire politicians in government, neither better nor worse. Not surprisingly she will disappoint when asked to do anything of importance for the public.
In her idyllic mind she actually seems to believe that passing a bill whereby the government forces people to buy junk insurance for the sole purpose of increasing the profits of insurance companies is a bold and historic achievement. She is dimwitted enough to not see the inherent loss of people’s sovereign rights that this bill entails. She is just stupid enough to notice that the country is awash in corporate dominance and that this measure further strenghtens that dominace.
The same can be said of Obama and the people in the Senate. We should not minimize the enormous amount of damage that theses people are doing to the country. Rather we should begin to think of ways to protect ourselves from the damage that will continue to follow from the loss of our sovereignty to a corporate run country.
The people in our government are collectively incapable of seeing the wreckless damamge they are causing mainly both from their stupidity and lack of integrity. We make a huge mistake in relying on these people to assure our wellfare.
One can only imagine where this country will be in 10 to 20 yrs. Our education system has already failed most of the baby boomers and beyond. If it was so good in the 50′s and 60′s why is this country on a continual downslide. Add the B.S. going on down in Texas to further dumb down future generations, and there is only one direction for this country.
The writing is on the wall. Empires fall and we are falling…fast! I am no teabagger or right wing nut, but taking to the streets in massive numbers appears to be our only solution. I am already teaching my children that they must be prepared to hit the streets.
I think this whole set-up is a Catch-22. Single congress members who take a stand and vote nay on HCR might keep their seats or they might not; but if enough of them vote nay, HCR will not pass and the Executive Branch, Pelosi and the rest of the leadership will be out in 2012. If they vote yea, then they might lose their seats or they might not; but if enough vote yea then HCR will pass and the leadership might stay in 2012. There is no safety, as far as I can see, so they might as well GO FOR THE PO.
The American people WANT A PO, and I think even those who don’t will change their minds in the years to come. Even if we don’t get the PO with this next bill, we, the People, and Congress (some of them, anyway) will fight for it– the congresspersons who don’t will be voted out. The State Gov’s will also be working on their own single payer or other bills to correct the failings of this one. It’s only a matter of time, so have HOPE (the real kind, not the Obama kind).
Michelle,
I concur.
