A couple years back, President Obama was delivering his State of the Union speech. With Justices of the Supreme Court sitting in front of him, Obama criticized their decision in Citizens United for the corrupting influence it would have on democracy and American election campaigns. The cameras then caught Justice Alito seeming to say, “that’s not true!” Thoroughly offended, justifiably so Fox assured us, the good Justice has not attended a SOTU since.
And who can blame him? No one else in this town is ever held accountable.
Today on ABC’s This Week, in television’s 579th “exclusive interview” with John McCain, the man who would have been President if only the Supremes could have decided the matter as they did in 2000, essentially told Justice Alito and his buddies they shouldn’t bother coming to any SOTU if they don’t want to be called out.
Decrying the wonderfully edifying GOP negative campaign ads funded by SuperPACS, Senator McCain told Jake Tapper exclusively that the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United was “naive and ignorant.” All I wanted at that moment was a shot of Supreme Court Justice Alito screaming at his tv, “that’s not true you %&#$@!”
A missed photo op. Sigh.

Quick, to the Pho Toshop cave, Pho cried to Toshop!
I was watching when “Scalito” did this routine. I’ve always wished I knew what he said. Sure appeared to disagree, which seems strange. I figured their attitude would be pretty much typical Republican: So you don’t like it, so fucking what?
What is the exact number of people who care what John McCain thinks? Seriously, why does any Sunday booker have him on their show? Is it simply that he is available? It makes Ace looks kind of promiscuous, actually. People I know who’ve had success appearing on cable chat shows say what matters most are immediacy, access, promptness, and manners and a smile — opinion is hardly relevant.
But this obsession with McCain has reached intervention proportions. Something needs to be done, like a conversation with his loving family. Or with the loving families of the Sunday show producers.
I prescribed the same for Cheney, and you haven’t heard from him lately, have you?
I like Tapper’s intro, and McCain’s “laying a square egg” expression when he hears it; clearly the deal was ‘no politics, just national security’ for this interview, but Jake broke the agreement on-air by starting with the Romney question.
I’d bet on it.
“I prescribed the same for Cheney, and you haven’t heard from him lately, have you?”
Well I for one thank if you played any role in that particular Dick not appearing in public spouting his vile rhetoric.
What I fear though, is that he is too busy working behind the scenes to gin up a war against Iran. No time for nasty teevee talk.
This country would have been better off electing the genuinely moderate conservative John McCain rather than the stealth far rightist Barack Obama. By the way, I don’t for a moment believe that Obama genuinely opposes the Citizens United decision.
Agreed on both counts. McCain is incapable of being as deceitful as Obama; you know that every single thing Obama says publicly is a lie. Good chance that everything he says in private is a lie as well. He’s a caricature of a human being.
Cheney was recently heard in favor of same sex marriage in MD.
McCain isn’t even making an effort to hide his resentment over losing the election to a younger man of color who hadn’t served in the military. “It’s my turn, dammit!”
You oversimplify. O sometimes, but rarely, say what he thinks. Like he supports birth control. Not bc he gives a shit about women, but bc he is owned by PhRMA.
Why didn’t Cheney make a side trip to New Jersey to talk Governor Christie out of vetoing same-sex marriage legislation? Inquiring minds want to know.
World’s smallest violin playing dirge for McC.
You can hardly criticize him for his disgruntlement & whining. After all, he was anointed, being son & grandson (or something like that) of admirals. Not to be confused with with peeps you would admire.
Just bc the royal breeding wore thin in the McC line before it wore thin in the Bush line, is no reason to not feel sorry for crash-the-jet-john.
I always found Alito weird as shit, with that sour, sarcastic face and the general bearing of a petulant eleven-year-old.
Oh wait, that was probably his biggest selling point to Chimpy.
McCain is getting ready for the rematch – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzyT9-9lUyE
McCain:
The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The five senators – Alan Cranston (Democrat of California), Dennis DeConcini (Democrat of Arizona), John Glenn (Democrat of Ohio), John McCain (Republican of Arizona), and Donald W. Riegle, Jr. (Democrat of Michigan) – were accused of improperly intervening in 1987 on behalf of Charles H. Keating, Jr., Chairman of the Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which was the target of a regulatory investigation by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB). The FHLBB subsequently backed off taking action against Lincoln.
Lincoln Savings and Loan collapsed in 1989, at a cost of over $3 billion to the federal government. Some 23,000 Lincoln bondholders were defrauded and many elderly investors lost their life savings.
He is a piece of political crap raping and pillaging.
Don’t know the back story. The ‘dick’s’ daughter is lesbian, so that would be the front story.
Guessing the back story is that, with no heart, the ‘dick’ is in no physical position to lobby anywhere other than where he lives.
William Black was part of the US Federal Task Force that put 1,000 of those criminals in jail…not before I lost my home. Why is he still heard?
Hey Petro. Hoping things are looking up.
Those who are heard are those who support the policy of the land. They are the winners.
You might think of McC as an O sock puppet, as bizarre as that seems.
All of this crap with Citizens United was predicted. We have already seen this movie before which is why rules were put in place to keep the wealthy from doing exactly what they are doing. When Sam Alito was shaking his head he knew that the decision that they passed was wrong. Hopefully with the Montana Supreme Court standing up to these people, someone with common sense will prevail.
And don’t forget the drama when the Mrs ran out of the hearing room when Lindsay Graham repeated the “charges” that Alito was a racist while at Princeton, thereby changing the subject of that hearing’s media summary on the evening news.
Someday soon, they’ll have an election and no one will come.
Hey, E: What did you think of the book discussion? I was hoping you would comment if you learned anything about the way ahead…..got pretty testy at the end.
If elections mattered they wouldn’t let us vote.
Citizens United – which the Rethuglicans clamored for – is backfiring on the Rethuglicans.
School Vouchers – which the Rethuglicans clamored for – are also backfiring on them.
Poor kids (coloreds, included!) are showing up in Private Schools with Rethuglicans’ kids.
Classic!
Of course not, he promised to veto it but signed it instead.
The puke
TV news and McCain go together. They are both passe.
(how do you make that little Frenchie thing over the e in passe?)
Use a felt pen (ballpoint is too hard for your screen), and place the point of the pen just over the top center of the ‘e’. Then, stroke quickly to the upper right, at about a 45 degree angle.
