There have been a disturbing number of instances in recent years when the level of political discourse coming mostly from the right has been so depressing that all you could do is weep for your country, if not the species.
Today’s example is the hate-filled debate between the GOP’s ugly faction and its cowardly faction over whether it’s okay to insult and slime any woman who has the courage to speak out on why health insurance should cover something so totally accepted and important to women as contraception. That’s right, the Republican party is actually having a debate about this.
An ordinary citizen, a young woman was asked to testify at a Congressional hearing on what should be covered by employer-provide health insurance, but House Republican Darrel Issa prevented her from speaking on the absurd grounds that in a hearing about reproductive and related health services, a woman had nothing to contribute. So Democrats held another hearing to allow her to speak.
That exchange might have ended the woman’s involvement in our story, but instead her willingness to speak publicly enraged the misogynist element of the GOP, led by Rush Limbaugh. Limbaugh has now called the brave woman who represented millions of other women a “slut,” a “prostitute” and someone who should just film and distribute sex videos for men like Rush to ogle.
Now at this point, every decent person on the planet, not just the women, should be calling for Rush’s oral castration. But while Limbaugh’s sponsors started pulling their ads, [more here] the self-styled half sensible remnants of the GOP have only weakly criticized Mr. Limbaugh, and then pulled their punches.
Carly Fiorina says Limbaugh’s remarks were “insulting”, but then she tried to distract from that by calling the whole issue a “distraction,” as though the bullying, misogyny and moral depravity of the Republican Party’s leading spokesmen is not a central issue of this era. Rick Santorum volunteered that Rush’s comments were “absurd,” but it’s okay, because Rush is an “entertainer.” Bravely spoken; does this suggest that a true conservative thinks it’s merely entertaining to call women sluts? The Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives couldn’t do much better, noting only that Rush’s atrocious comments were “inappropiate.” Gosh, that’ll sting. [Update: per MSNBC, the courageous Mitt Romney says "it's not the language I would have used."]
Having heard from the cowardly half of the GOP, we’re now getting responses from the vicious and stupid half. Today, CNN commentator and right wing blogger Erick Erickson defended Limbaugh, explaining that while Rush’s comments were indeed “insults,” they were nevertheless justified, because after all, the previously unknown woman had testified that she “wanted the tax payers to pay her to have sex.” What?
That total fabrication and vicious smear apparently started with a writer for CNS, who in addition to being either incompetent or dishonest has private insurance confused with government payments. His lie was then repeated by Michele Malkin and now today by Erick Erickson:
So of course Rush Limbaugh was being insulting. He was using it as a tool to highlight just how absurd the Democrats’ position is on this. It’s what he does and does quite well. And in the process he’s exposing a lot of media bias on the issue as people rush out (no pun intended) to make Sandra Fluke a victim of his insults and dance around precisely what is really insulting — her testimony before congress that American taxpayers should subsidize the sexual habits of Georgetown Law School students because, God forbid, they should stop having sex if they cannot afford the pills themselves.
Now we could stop here and remark on the GOP’s depravity of insulting and viciously defaming ordinary women, or any citizen, merely for testifying before Congress.
But we pause in our description of the sewer to which the GOP has descended to remind our readers that this whole issue began with whether private insurers should be required to include coverage for contraceptive and related health services in private insurance offered by private employers. And so it’s helpful to remember that employer-provided “benefits” are ultimately offered in lieu of higher wages/salaries; in that sense, whatever health coverage the insurance provides is ultimately paid for by the employees.
In other words, women who use such services ultimately pay the premiums (and co-pays, deductibles, etc.). And since the vast majority of American women use covered contraception sometime in their lives, that means that women covered by insurance are paying for a service they almost universally use.
But in the Erick Erickson’s world, that means that all these “slutty” women are asking taxpayers to pay them for having sex. [Update: Fox News Bill O'Reilly just repeated the same lie. So the memo's gone out; tell the lie about government paying for sex.]
You can’t get any dumber, meaner or dishonest than the defenders of today’s GOP. I say, build the moon colony; I’ll pay taxes to send them.

Meanwhile, Runt Limpdick mocked Obama for his phone call to Sandra Fluke today, and continued to spread his misogynistic bullshit across the airwaves. But, hey, since it entertains Sanctimonious Santorum…
So to these people, Viagra = should be covered but contraception…well maybe those sluts should just keep their legs crossed. Got it. If anybody still watches CNN AT ALL, they are approving of Erickson’s comments and CNN’s decision to hire him. I don;t care if you turn it off every time Erickson is mentioned, even in passing, you are helping pay his salary. As long as CNN doesn’t have to face any consequences for hiring this bellicose misogynist, they’ll just keep paying him to hate on people.
Erick Erickson (if that is his real name) is a great reason not to pay for a basic cable package.
good point by the author, the dumbasses are now given a national platform to proclaim a completely false idea, that taxpayers are paying, somehow for private insurance holders benefits.
and I cringe every time I read a “leading” democrat’s response. none of the responses I have read point out that Limbaugh’s statement is absolutely false. So the debate now, in the minds of Idiot America, “should the gov pay for that girl’s contraceptives?”
I’ve been all around the web, and this article on firedoglake is the first I’ve seen that calls out the LIE. How about some “leading” democrats calling out the LIE first, then throwing out their two cents worth on the fat boy right wing sewer dwellers’ comments ?
Of course CNN is pure scum like the rest of the corporate media world. Off subject, but too bad Ted Turner was fraudulently relieved of his majority ownership in CNN by AOL’s criminal leader, Steve Case. Steve Case should be in jail. It’s a banana republic, but I would say that when they finally let Homeland Security turn off the internet information flow, then a bunch of people will then head out into the streets. that looks like the likely outcome at this juncture. We’re not so different than Syria.
Fluke actually blogged here at MyFDL as regards what she said, and would have said IF she had been allowed to testify.

How about that Erick?
Thanks for the link, Kelly.
Also — regarding the Comments function: the tech magicians at FDL are currently upgrading the software for the comments at MyFDL. First they got rid of the embedded format, so all comments are sequential. Next, they should have the “reply” button working again soon (tomorrow?), and then comments will load without having to refresh. So we appreciate people’s patience while they make changes our readers have requested.
@Scarecrow #6
I got an update about that from the tech side today – and am putting that comment system update up on the Watercooler tonight so everybody knows.
W00t!
This is what bothers me. Limbaugh has been insulting females for over 40 years. Why are we now in a twist? Nobody has bothered to shut “the mouth” up for all these years. Look beyond Limbaugh and his advertisers who make big bucks off “the mouth”! Best thoughts: don’t party with his stupid lemmings. They won’t go away.
Hooray for you!
Love the image of sending the Republicans to a moon colony. Good riddance.
Blessings to all,
@ Barcode #8
I think it’s something else – like that it comes after such a public war on women.
For me, I’ve been disgusted by what’s been going on the last few weeks, with Komen, the birth control stuff, the VA forced probing bill, etc….
BUT, for some reason, Rush’s comments have caused me to just snap.
I’m fuming here. after all of this, seeing a guy who has many millions of people hanging on his every word try to use his microphone to destroy the name of a lowly student, just because she had the temerity to say that some of her friends had medical problems and needed their insurance to cover it…. the power disparity there… ugggh. I’m, so mad I can’t see straight.
It’s a “straw that broke the camel’s back” moment for me. Maybe it is for some other people as well.
A Limbaugh classic
Blogger Ace Of Spades Calls Sandra Fluke “A Shiftless Rent-A-Cooch From East Whoreville”
Nope. No way, no how am I clicking that link.
American Conservatism = Christian Fascism
The Republicans seem to be turning into a cult.
Not just insulting them. . . preying on underaged women.
Mullah Limbuagh and his cohorts have been insulting women and minorities for a long time. The question is will this finally be the impetus to remove hate radio and television from mainstream publicly owned airwaves.
Is it just me, or isn’t it obvious that this vicious rhetoric encourages violence against women?
There was a women’s shelter in my hometown. There don’t seem to be too many for men.
Well, if women shouldn’t be having sex, by extension men aren’t having sex. Or are they? Are Rush and Santorum implying that all men are gay? Inquiring minds and all that…
Thom Hartman interviewed one Nancy Cohen about her book ” Delierium ” about the crazy tenets of the Christian fundamentalist woman’s movement who own this section of the Republican Party. Cohen didn’t go far enough in calling these women what they are: suppressed, sick, wackos. Centuries of abuse at the hands of their male leaders apparently isn’t enough for these women. As she fell to the floor she screamed out, ” Give me more, Give me more “. This is the banner headlines which should backdrop the Republican Convention when Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann spin a real stemwinder about freedom and the American way. Yeehah, cowgirl!
What this outrageous reaction proves is that Sandra Fluke nailed their asses to the wall. And they know it. Rush is traditionally first in the lists, and when he comes out frothing at the mouth like this, he’s covering for some major damage. Go Sandra!
@Kilgour Trout, I knew CNN went into the ranks of the bottom feeders, I marvelled at the demise of the real CNN at the time. I just didn’t know the story. Thanks.
Erick Erickson, huh? He even looks like a dip.
Damn. Something I have to agree with.
True, the taxpayers are not involved. It’s worse. Obama wants to force a religious organization to provide something antithetical to it’s beliefs. Not good.
Meanwhile the left has hijacked that issue and keeps moving the goalposts. No wonder conservatives got it wrong.
[Note: This part of the comment was clipped because it repeats the insult to women. This is a warning: any further violations, and you're gone. Ed.]
I mentioned this in a comment PaM’S post. Erickson and O’Reiley aren’t the only ones saying this. I read her testimony and I was baffled. She wasn’t talking about gov’t doing anything other than enact the HHS reg everybody’s been talking about. That’s it. People of Erickson’s ilk do it bv/c they know damn well the lamestream (Sarah is right about that, have to say.) media won’t call him out and if someone ever does the bullshit will have gotten alot of traction
“….employer-provided “benefits” are ultimately offered in lieu of higher wages/salaries; in that sense, whatever health coverage the insurance provides is ultimately paid for by the employees.”
This is the point that democrats starting with Obama should have been making from the start of this whole mess.
Once again the democrats lose the “messaging war” without even firing a shot.
calling these creatures pond scum would be an insult to algae everywhere.
@wynota skunk: You don’t know any of these women do you? They are definitely not shrinking violets. Anal Retentive maybe, but “suppressed” (even repressed) is not even close. The ones I know have the Southern Belle routine down pat but, in fact, they brook little foolishness from their men. There must be something wrong with them. I’ll agree with that, but it’s much more complicated.
Taxpayers could be “involved” since insurance premiums and medical expenses are tax deductible.
You’re referring to Georgetown University and the law school (“a religious organization”), which provide the contraceptive insurance coverage to its faculty and staff, but doesn’t provide it for students who are covered by Georgetown’s medical insurance.
Just to remind Shooter that he’s defending Rush Limbaugh, the thrice-married guy who goes to the notorious sex-tourist locale of the Dominican Republic with bottles of unprsecribed Viagra in his luggage:
http://www.alternet.org/story/38192//
Since last night, there have been several others repeating the same fabrication, simply linking to Erick, or the CNS or to Rush’s original statements, all false. However, I see that Althouse called them on it.
link was to mediamatters
I agree with and share the outrage. I even have to admit after hearing Rush Limbaugh since he first signed on years ago I have been shocked at this depravity. His turgid emotional state brings shudders and the thought that he really might be dangerous if alone with a woman in a dark ally.
All that said; Why are so many of the Democrats, even the women so relatively mild in their responses? The most common comments I have seen and heard are to admonish the Republicans that they are hurting their cause if they aren’t stronger in renouncing the comments. (Melissa Harris Perry sees it as a “teaching moment.” ) For cripes sake! Why are we so worried about the pitiful Republicans hurting themselves? These people are out of control with primitive aggression and truly dangerous. Who is going to say so?
Ms. Fluke is a mature woman, articulate and obviously worthy of great respect and defending herself admirably. Why in the world does the father-in-chief think the greatest compliment is to tell the “sweet thing” her parents should be proud. I have always been gratified by the times my parents expressed approval. But it was long before 30 that it stopped motivating my choices and actions
We still have a long way to go Baby.
The law will require health insurance companies to provide coverage for contraception.
No law requires a Church or a Church-affiliated business to provide health insurance. So, if it offends your precious sensibilities to provide birth control or viagra or blood transfusions or pre-natal care or bone marrow transplants to your employees, you have a simple solution. Don’t. Provide. Health. Insurance.
> Obama wants to force a religious organization to
> provide something antithetical to it’s beliefs.
Taxes? Freedom? Equal rights? Science?
Democrats need to focus more on the repulsive Republican Party in the coming election and not just on the Republican candidates. They speak with a stunning and reprehensible solidarity. They ARE the party of MEAN. They ARE the party of the RICH. They ARE the ANTI-SEX and ANTIU-WOMAN party. They ARE the ANTI-TAX party. They ARE the ANTI-SCIENCE party. It is not one or two candidates out there who champion ignorance, mendacity, money, inequality, abstinence, and theocracy. They spew their disgusting 10th century screed with the same talking points. It IS a conspiracy. Senators and Representatives at all levels must be attacked for their party dogma. If the Dems cannot or will not do that at the Congressional and state level, the attack on unions, collective bargaining, voting rights, education, civil liberties, and the safety net will continue.
Have you known women who smoked Virginia Slims or Camels nonfiltered? I have and preferred the company of the Camels smokers.
I knew a woman psychiatrist nonsmoker who permitted her patients to smoke. She made notes about the secondary smoke, about the irritation of the smell. The least irritating were the Camels, the most irritating were Virginia Slims.

We need t-shirts.
Rush can hold a freedom fry between his knees.
Four times married now
When a right-wing figure like Limbaugh comes under attack for what he said, Republicans rally behind him.
When someone like Michael Moore (who, on his worst day, is less offensive than Limbaugh on his best) comes under attack for what he said, Democrats fall over one another to distance themselves from him. And if they’re in an especially cowardly mood (which is most of the time), they’ll pass resolutions condemning that person.
Compare and contrast.
I see that paragon of virtue, Bill O’Reilly, is backing Limpscum.
I hope you caught the cynicism in choosing that particular phrase Aitch.
I spent 30 years in a cloud of smoke, mine and their’s. I am certain Virginia Slims was among them. I actually was offended by their name and marketing and don’t recall that I ever smoked one of them however.
Shuddering at the use of the word “turgid” in companion with anything to do with Rust Limballs
If the Dems cannot or will not do that at the Congressional and state level, the attack on unions, collective bargaining, voting rights, education, civil liberties, and the safety net will continue.
They won’t. Some consultant who graduated from Shrum Academy will warn them, “But you can’t do THAT! Swing voters in Macomb County might be offended.”
LOL
just excise the “gi” that word and it fixes everything.
No he can’t. His knees don’t touch.
point taken!
Book Salon up with Andrew Bacevich’s The Short American Century: A Postmortem hosted by Robert Farley
OK, please excuse/skip if you must, a stupid question. Maybe someone will take pity and the time to answer.
I gave up television some time ago and get all my stuff on-line, mostly podcasts of sources I trust.
I remember CNN launching its career in ernest by grabbing the lead during the first Gulf War. Just how/when/with what did it decide it would rather be the cesspool than the foundation?
Mostly all should abjure ad hominum attacks, which speak more explicitly to the nature of the speaker than he who is being spoken of. If however you really need to mud wrestle, the mud pits are about as low as it gets.
It will be interesting to see just how far nutty misogynist Republicans take this.
They definitely are misrepresenting (i.e. lying about) Sandra Fluke, calling her a slut and prostitute, but what about all the women serving in the U.S. military, on the pill, sexually active, contraceptives and sexual activity paid for by U.S. taxpayers? (gasp) What about all the women working for private contractors or private Defense Industry companies, on the pill, sexually active, contraceptives and sexual activity subsidized by U.S. taxpayers? (shock) What about all the women working for taxpayer-funded local, state and federal government, on the pill, sexually active, contraceptives and sexual activity subsidized by U.S., state or local taxpayers? (outrageous, say outraged Republicans).
IOW, by Republicans doubling-down on their craziness by expanding on their lie about Sandra Fluke, these Republicans have essentially called all women everywhere who are receiving taxpayer funds anywhere, women on the pill, sexually active, nothing but a bunch of sluts and prostitutes, who should be filmed in their sexual activity so that taxpayers like Rush Limbaugh and Erick Erickson can get their money’s worth.
Disgusting doesn’t even begin to describe what these crackpot Republicans are doing, whether over women and contraceptives, or the Blunt amendment, or invasive procedures in Virginia (which should be Virginia’s new motto), or what misogynist arch-religious fanatic Republicans are doing in one state after another attacking women’s health care and the inherent right of all American women to decide for themselves what they, and their own conscience, decides is best for them, no religious interference, no Vatican dogmatic declarations.
So, how do all contraceptive-using American women receiving taxpayer money in one way or another feel about being called a bunch of sluts and prostitutes by Republicans? Will they still vote for Republican politicians anyway after being called sluts and prostitutes? Will they take this outrageous and un-American attack by Republicans lying down, legs forcibly spread, and enjoying it (like Texas Republican Bill Clayton once infamously said)?
Ad hominem attacks have their place. This is their place.
The religious organization is free to drop covering health care at all if it feels that it does not want to cover legitimate medical practices.
The bishop and his brood don’t get to make medical decisions for other people(and that is what they are doing when they choose to not cover certain types of medical care.)
They lost control of the debate back when they allowed a legit medical procedure to be demonized simply because they didn’t like the optics of being called a baby killer.
It isn’t surprising that the Christian Taliban would think they had this in the bag.
The gasbag pops: I was joking!
I see dipshit Limpdick issued an apology on his web site.
Yeah, I guess that means everything will be okay and he can go back to hatin’
I still want the “Nous sommes tous des ‘sluts’ maintenant” T-shirt
“Now at this point, every decent person on the planet, not just the women, should be calling for Rush’s oral castration.”
It would be better to go for his real and total castration if you can find his thing somewhere under a ton of fluffy meat.
When I see these idiots, most of who appear to be republicans, wandering and talking garbage, it makes me realize the importance of having contraceptive readily available. If it were, we would not have these fools in existence.
Thank you Scarecrow for pointing out what others seem to have missed: an employer “provided” health insurance is employee compensation. Employees can do whatever they want with their compensation. It is unimportant that employers object. It is not their money. It’s not even insurance. It’s all or a portion of an insurance premium that is sent by the employer to the insurance company as a convenience for all concerned. In fact, they get a tax break for sending it to the insurance company as a deductible business expense, just as they do their portion of retirement or SS premiums. Employees have to send in their premiums or portion of premium from after-tax paychecks. Corporations get the tax benefit of such premiums just the same as they do all other employee perks. Individuals, small businesses, and entrepreneurs generally, do not get the tax deduction nor do they get the “bulk” discount for pooling a large number of subscribers. It is a bookkeeping dodge! By “supplying” insurance payment, the employer reduces his employee compensation costs. Employees do not have that luxury. That’s the discrimination that we should be addressing. Why do you think that so many employers pay for upper management Country Club memberships? A $30,000 per year membership actually costs the company approx. $22,000. They would have to pay the exec. $40,000 for the exec to pay for it himself. Do the math.
Rush and Eric are two men that can hold the claim of being incredibly ugly both inside and out. It appears that neither of these “wild and crazy” guys have ever spoken with a woman about birth control. They are both talking about contraceptives as if they are used in the same manner these two men use the Viagra boner pills. You take at least one every time you have sex. The fact that oral contraception is regime that keeps a certain hormonal level and is taken regardless of whether the person expects to have sex or not. You don’t take a handful of contraceptives before a big date. If they had ever bothered to investigate the issue at all they would be aware of how simple minded and childish they sound. Mean definitely, but childish, uninformed and immature for sure.
Thanks Ed. Can’t happen soon enough. The statement about forcing religious..blah, blah, blah, is completely false. I know you can’t help yourself.
We should go after his advertisers also…Hate to say Birds of a Feather….but you know.
Assuming the women of birth control age and the cost of birth control pills I have to believe Big Pharma will be discussing this with the repubs soon.
As for Rush, me thinks he doth protest to much. Have you watched the way he sucks on his cigar, is it like a pacifier for a baby? Just wonderin’.
