I remember once reading an Indian guru, who said that if the water buffalo had a god, it would probably look like a very large water buffalo. He believed that there is only one god, formless and all pervading, but that he/she/it responds to intense worship by taking on the form that most pleases his/her/its devotees depending on their temperament and station in life.
I am beginning to think that the goddess of paranoia pursues a similar strategy: she appears to the crunchy granola/ruccola crowd as global warming and to the deep fried Mars Bar set as black helicopters.
To each of her myriad of devotees she appears in the form most guaranteed to seduce and charm them, but at bottom, there is no paranoia but paranoia and the media is her witness.
I was reminded of an incident from the darkest days of the Second World War, a time with millions of human beings freshly dead, or about to die, with European civilization ground to dust or burned to ashes, when there, deep in his bomb poof bunker, Winston Churchill sent a pudding back to the kitchen, complaining that it had “no theme”.
That, I think is problem with America’s free floating paranoia: like Winnie’s dessert, the paranoia pudding that Americans are collectively pulling, has no “theme”.
Once president Obama did touch briefly on what I do believe is the goddess’s true form.
We are part of the American family. We believe that in a country where every race and faith and point of view can be found, we are still bound together as one people; that we share common hopes and a common creed; that the dreams of a little girl in Tucson are not so different than those of our own children, and that they all deserve the chance to be fulfilled. That, too, is what sets us apart as a nation. – President Barack Obama
I disagree, I think the opposite is precisely the truth and that is what “sets us apart as a nation”…. And I can prove it with a few simple graphs:
Actually this is exactly what doesn’t set us apart, here is the entire world’s estimated distribution of wealth:
So as you can see, if anything sets us apart it is that the distribution of wealth in the USA is much more unequal than the world average.
The previous illustrations are examples of what is called the “Champagne Glass Graph”, let’s look at this simple pie-chart to get a clearer idea of what is going on:
Or this graph.
So if there is one thing the American people are not is a “family” with “common goals”. One percent of the population controls thirty five percent of the net worth. Twenty percent of the population controls eighty five percent of that wealth. That leaves no less than eighty percent of the population to divide up the remaining fifteen percent of the wealth left over.
This is a reality that Americans don’t face easily. Here is the reality contrasted with what people think that realty is and with what they think that reality should be:
How does that sort of wealth distribution play out in real life? Here is a reading of America’s mood from a survey by Pew Research:
The survey finds that a majority of the public (57%) says it is very difficult or difficult to afford things they really want. About the same percentage said this two years ago (55%). And for many Americans, affording basic necessities remains a struggle – 51% say it is difficult to afford health care, 48% say the same about their home heating and electric bills, and 29% say it is difficult to afford food. – Pew Research Center
In the richest country in world nearly thirty percent of the population have trouble earning enough money to eat. Fifty one percent say it is difficult to afford health care and another forty eight percent can’t afford to heat their homes.
As James Kunstler says:
You kind of wonder here in the flash-frozen northeast if, a few days from now, scores of dead bodies will be found in unheated trailers across the county. The Weather Channel said 20-below-zero this morning in upstate New York. I know there are people so desperately poor out there because a couple of weeks ago I overheard a supermarket worker say she couldn’t afford to buy propane. And she had a job!
Now having read that you wonder how Obama could say the following with a straight face:
We are part of the American family. We believe that in a country where every race and faith and point of view can be found, we are still bound together as one people
So here is how the paranoia thing works:
The one percent of the population that controls forty three percent of the financial wealth and the next four percent that controls twenty nine percent, plus those who control the next twenty one percent are justifiably paranoiac thinking what would happen if the eighty percent of the population left with only seven percent of the financial wealth ever woke up and decided to change the percentages around, if only by democratically using income taxes to redistribute that wealth.
So the major cultural, legal and ideological industry of the USA is to keep that eighty percent, the peasantry, from actually discovering who is making them so miserable and how they do it and then getting together and changing the situation… as has so often happened throughout history. With ninety three percent of America’s money at their disposal there is no lack of funds for the one percenters to do the job.
The underlying cause of all America woes is the inequality of income distribution and such a large percentage of the population hungry and without adequate medical care etc. This is the sort of numbers and percentages (I almost forgot the percentage of incarcerated) that occur in third world countries, where people are not being told from morning to night that they live “in the greatest country in the world” day in and day out. The cognitive dissonance between reality as it is lived and the national narrative, induces a paranoia which is expressed differently by different sectors of the society. At this level the “black helicopter” and the polar bears are simply ways of “personalizing” a common malaise. I myself happen to belong to the climate warming tribe of paranoiacs, while others belong to the Tea Party tribe… different strokes for different folks…. but we are all of us (including POTUS) just whistling past the graveyard.
And that boys and girls explains why so many Americans are worried about Islam and abortion and black helicopters and climate change and transgenic food and whether Barack Obama was born in the USA and polar bears. Anything but the 800 pound gorilla in the room… identifying the fucker and the fuckee.
Paranoia is what “binds us together as one people”… the paranoia of the haves, fearing that the have nots will someday dispossess them and the have nots with whatever paranoia du jour that the media, owned by that one percent, chooses to feed them and that “suits their temperament and station in life”.

Add to that distraction pitting poor white against poor black and bourgeoisie leftist white against bourgeoisie rightist white.
As well as what the Kardashians are currently up to.
Two points: First, 40% of the population is not going hungry. Maybe only 10%. The rest may be getting various govt. transfer payments including SNAP, using food banks, etc., but they are not going hungry. In fact, many are getting fat on McDonald’s food, Domino’s pizza, etc.
There are, however, more and more falling into the very poor category. So the hunger problem is getting worse.
Second point: The upper 5% or the “best of the best” are not actually completely driven by fear. Lots of it is entitlement. After all, we have the American fantasy that people get ahead by virtue of their hard work. The “winners” really believe that it is because they are better, more virtuous, more right, that they are the ones reaping the rewards. The others are “others”. Much like we have made “Muslims” into others, aka inferiors, out of control, etc. Same feelings, but much more strongly held.
The winners also are completely out of touch with the others. This was unfortunately for Romney very obvious during the presidential campaign. He simply got out there and made it obvious he was out of touch completely with ordinary people. Of course, the media were glad to amplify this. The other out of touch guy, Obama, never even pretended to be in touch and he was somehow golden by virtue of course of his race.
BTW, I am one of the polar bear lovers. And, yes, we are destroying the planet. And, no, we won’t be able to save the human race by colonizing Mars or the moon.
Now which is more important – our disfunctional killing suppressing machine which is our government or our disfunctional distruction of our home planet? Pick your paranoia. But is it paranoia when they really are out to get you? I don’t think so.
Great write up Mr. Seaton, onto my FB. Thanks for all you.
I gotta add that one to my FB post and share of your read.
DAMN but that’s effing brilliant writing.
*G*
Most folks don’t know who’s screwing them because they don’t want to know. If they knew, they’d feel obligated to do something about it, and they think that it would be useless to try. (Which is a pity, because the more you know about your real foes, the easier it is to fight them.)
What amazing hubris to purport to know what all children in America dream. Does anyone take crap like this seriously?
I stopped paying attention to anything Obama said around March 2010, especially blatantly untrue and relatively meaningless drivel like this.
Then again, I didn’t vote for him in 2012 out of fear that, otherwise, I might help Romney get elected or try to persuade anyone else to vote for him. I voted Green and tried to persuade others to vote Green.
It’s more likely when the shit does hit the fan it will drive the country even harder to the right.
Obama’s statement is cognitive dissonance. It is designed to justify his belief that we are all part of a collective. And of course, he wants us to believe that his government is a social institution that cares about people of all creeds. Ridiculous. All children from sea to shinning sea all have the same hopes? So, while Obama’s policies of social change or social justice may be painful, it’s okay, it’s for the betterment of the collective.
Obama wants the majority of us to believe that injustice is caused by the wealthy and we are the victims. It’s a scene from Frankenstein, Obama is generating fear and the 99% are banding together with torches to go after the horrible monster, Dr. Frankencapitalist.
What Obama says is not great philosophy, it’s self-justification.
Our problem is not climate change, polar bears, big oil, Obama. Our problem is thinking. Two words that authors, politicians, propagandists and pundits always say, “I think”, are responsible for almost all suffering.
Did you read the charts in the post? The poliicies of Obama and both parties in Congress serve and protect the wealthy, and have furthered the trends shown in the charts.
I’m not defending any party. The charts themselves are cognitive dissonance. If someone believes the 1% is the source of the problem, then they will post charts to support that belief. Problem is beliefs are not truth. The word belief is attached to doubt. The words, “I think” are synonymous with “I believe”. You need to drop your beliefs they are nothing but justification for your actions. I’m not asking anyone to believe me, the problem is the belief. I simply recognize the facts in the chart and make note of them, file in the not knowledge folder.
“I”, is the invisible companion that is always with you. It convinces you of your separateness, your superiority over others, and your specialness. I allows you to get trapped in your self-importance. It wants you to feel anger when your wronged, offended when you don’t get your way. I is the ego, stop listening to it and you begin to make others more important than yourself. Leo Tolstoy wrote: “The sole purpose of life is to serve humanity.”
Imposing your beliefs on others for the good of the collective does not serve humanity. It imposes laws and penalties on peoples. When the government does it, it’s enforced at gun point. If anybody should serve humanity its a politician.
Obama likes to say that America attracts the best and brightest. Yes, and it also attracts the poor and least desirable. For every Phd. coming to America there are 10,000 poor and illiterate. That in itself is probably reflected in the charts. Oh but thats not the point of the chart.
Paranoids have enemies, too. Nice comment.
Ding ding ding ding ding! You get it! Welcome to the Light Side, Senor Seaton.
“The underlying cause of all America woes is the inequality of income distribution and such a large percentage of the population hungry and without adequate medical care etc.”
Other than you left off the “n” in “American,” or maybe you meant “America’s”(yes, I’m a spelling nazi) that about sums it up. And it’s getting worse by the day. The income distribution, not your spelling, Senor Seaton.
Our government is for sale to the highest bidder. The highest corporate bidder, that is.
At the deliberate risk of sounding like long lost and lamented Ludwig, what do your Spanish friends and neighbors have to say about this, Comrade Seaton? Inquiring barbaric minds want to know :)
Please keep those bar-graphs and pie-charts coming. They are…real. Ie, true. Well done.
BTW, my wife thinks I am too forgiving of you for advocating the Lesser, or perhaps More Effective, Evil, Sr. Seaton, in the 2012 American presidential election, in light of your recent posts, which have been spot on, IMHO. Would you perhaps be kind enough to elaborate what you, or what your Spanish friends and neighbors, think of Obama now?
Oh David has always thought Obama was a schmuck. It’s what got him kicked off of TPM and Dagblog. I don’t think he ever went to Kos though – the righteous democrap site.
He was simply saying between Obama and the repugs, Obama was marginally less of a schmuck.
The underlying cause of U.S. problems is PTB that engineered that and the other woes, austerity ghouls determined to loot every penny from those who are weak.
Yup. And also urging people to keep in mind that sometimes getting thieves to fall out amongst themselves is half the battle. This isn’t as hard as the TINA (“There Is No Alternative”) type would have us believe — there are certain institutions that every capitalist country sets aside as too important to be governed by capitalism. The main difference between Europe and the US — or between certain parts of the US — is which institutions get chosen for special status. (For instance, the farmers of North Dakota will never get rid of their socialist bank or their socialist grain elevators.)
I’m sorry I didn’t get to your post before it was front-paged, DS, but it’s very nice, with just the right mix of quantitative data and intelligent argument.
BTW, as to your guru and the water buffalo, in 6th century, B.C.E. Greece Xenophanes said the same thing about cattle and horses and lions.
Of course the biggest socialist institution is the MIC.
Nice post. Recc’d.
I know who is screwing me over. And fought them. But I’ve found fighting them although rewarding psychicly was also damaging me personally and professionally. I have and had a lot of anger at “them.”
I have watched and read some fiction about what happens to people who try to “storm the Bastille” and it’s grim. What some want is that satisfaction of the 1% getting their comeuppance. But I don’t just want them to go to jail, I want my money back, or my opportunity back.
Think about all the lost potential. Instead of creatIng new things I’m slugging it out for crappy jobs or sticking in a crappy job for health care.
Finance capitalism.
Churchill was a real jerk. Americans and Brits appear to like real jerks during war time. That bit of tasty pudding is now hard to swallow for some dessert only eaters. Cheney/Bush the Team created their own war and their own reality to satisfy what Brits and Americans like. Sold it to big majorities, too. All the second guessing and b.s. in the world doesn’t change the fact Americans will kill you for your money, and quickly, too. ( And, cheaper prices at the pump. We knew that, too. ) It’s not about the sum really but your position on the flag pole. The higher up you go the less chance you get pissed on by every stray mutt passing through.
Yep. Especially Churchill….jack ass extraordinaire.
… may be time for a few close shaves with the National Razor –
Anarcritees ? Is this the first time we’ve had a self-help troll to misguide us ? Well-cultivated beliefs are the grist on which smart people survive and thrive .Better to have no beliefs than to conform to supply-side beliefs ,but both will lead you into a FEMA residency .It’s class warfare , and it will not be resolved with flowers and candy .
Actually ” I think” anarc knows this and has already moved out of fiat holdings and banker invigilation.
Hey David , I think your dairy on the little pig and its belief in the system was the best of 2012 .I hope you put it up again .
The takeover of America’s wealth by bankers, financiers and CEO’s has come about because of their alliance with racists and religious bigots, who vote against their own material interests. There are certainly themes to the “paranoia” of the latter – they fear people of other races and religions. These fears arise from very basic instincts, not restricted to humans – there is deep hostility to and fear of those who do not belong to the tribal group, which probably was a genetic group to begin with, but which has expanded to parties and nations. The powerful and harmful “paranoias” which to a large extent rule humans are mostly perverted group instincts.
And America’s “unique” solution to the fact that the top is hoarding the wealth is to have the 80% of us argue about who deserves the remaining 15% or doesn’t deserve it because they have “entry level” possitions.
What kind of world do we have when a 19 year old working 40+ hours gets to turn over 6 months worth of savings to get an abcessed tooth removed and it’s all HER fault because she didn’t choose Mitt Romney for her parent and her job is considered “menial” by the creative classes that went to college. God forbid she ever be able to afford training without entering into indentured servitude.
Thank you D.Seaton … it is good to know how held wealth / income takings champagne glass looks.
Doubt the planets top 20% wealth holding/getting humans will abide much change being done / taking place in nice ways… it will take a big quake socially and economically and politically.
Wealth does not always lead to wisdom. It is too bad about that being so too.
