Today I’m looking forward to Kucinich’s Domestic Policy Subcommittee (of House Oversight and Government Reform) hearing with Treasury’s Kashkari (TARP czar holdover from Bushco and Paulson’s Treasury, previously of Goldman Sachs) on TARP waste and abuse. When Kashkari testified before this subcommittee in November, Kucinich and Issa (!) teamed up to expose Kashkari and the TARP generally. Still one of my favorite hearing moments:
kucinich to kashkari: no one questions that you are working hard. our question is who are you working for?
Kucinich actually comes to hearings prepared and frequently asks both good questions and good follow up questions.
Live streaming is expected at most committee websites (see links below) and CSPAN (schedule). Direct realplayer links are: CSPAN, CSPAN-2, CSPAN-3, CSPAN Radio.
Also, for most Senate hearing rooms, there is a live audio feed provided by CSPAN. Although they are not always activated, when they are it’s a great alternative link especially for dial up. Check the room number of the hearing in the list below and then click the room’s audio realplayer link on the list of links I’ve compiled.

From 1983 to 1986, Reich established and managed the inter-agency Office of Public Diplomacy for Latin America and the Caribbean. The OPD declassified Central Intelligence Agency information and disseminated it to influence public opinion and spur Congress to continue to fund the Reagan’s administration’s campaign against Nicaragua’s Sandinista government. The OPD was highly controversial and was criticized by numerous government sources, including a staff report by the House Foreign Affairs Committee, which characterized it as a domestic political and propaganda operation.[3] In 1987, an investigation by the Comptroller General determined that the OPD engaged in "prohibited, covert propaganda activities, beyond the range of acceptable agency public information activities". The OPD also violated “a restriction on the State Department’s annual appropriations prohibiting the use of federal funds for publicity or propaganda purposes not authorized by Congress.”[1]

fyi – i don’t expect to do the hearing lists next week, and possibly the week after that. if anyone is willing to lend a hand, especially during the next couple of weeks, please leave a comment (or i can be reached via email – contact link). thanks.
re the kucinich hearing with kashkari: at this time its not on the cspan schedule of events to be covered today – but i’m assured by the nice people at cspan that they are covering it and it will be broadcast later today
for live coverage, there should be a feed from the committee website, but i didn’t confirm that with them. i’ll be going to the committee website and if that’s a no-go looking for it on cspan radio later in the day.
DIGG IS OPEN
Selise ! Kucinich’s words were priceless … great question.
Damn Selise…you should be getting paid for what you do. Thanks so much for the heads up.
Hope I can get the ‘Cash/Carry’ round with Rep. Kucinich. Disgusts me no end that the Paulson clone is still in his post.
Sadly, I’m coming to some conclusions that I don’t like regarding what I thought Obama was and what he is repeatedly revealed to be. His choices for his economic team, keeping Gates on, his Chief of Staff and what that may indicate, his state secrets stand in the al Haramain case, his refusal to oppose capture and indefinite detention without charges…..not to mention more billions for the banksters’ black hole(s).
I still have hope (sorta), but it’s getting pretty dim.
Thanks again for your lists, selise. (keep after Gietner, Summers, & crew). Speaks loudly to me that not one of ‘our’ economists is on the team, (Krugman, Roubini, Stiglitz, Galbraith, etc.). Obama keeps repeating that he wants a diversity of opinions, but his actions don’t bear that out (except to appease Repubs).
re kucinich hearing w kashkari.
here is the direct link for the committee’s video webstream:
http://boss.streamos.com/wmedi…..070129.asx
i don’t see an audio only stream, but have a call into the committee’s IT person. fingers crossed.
thanks for all the kind words. i’m really glad to know you find the hearing lists useful.
Selise listening to Shensiki on Vets. Just said that there are 154,ooo homeless Vets. That several years ago there were closed to 240,ooo. Remember when O’Reilly said “there are no Vets living under bridges”
did i miss a hearing? yikes! such an important hearing too. can you give me a quick link and i’ll update the list? thanks so much!
Sheseki “timely budgets critical” 1500 WWII Vets dying everyday. Vietnam Vets largest population. Discussing the medical records issue.
I went to the VA in Dayton Ohio with my 82 year old WWII Vet dad 5 times this last year. They have an effective electronic medical records information systems going. But when you enter the outside system nursing homes, other hospitals…talk about a mess.
Selise Watching now
http://www.cspan.org/Watch/C-SPAN2_rm.aspx
hate to miss Kucinich but I think I will stay here for a while
wondering whether they will talk about Iraqi Vet suicides? Amy Goodman just did a report on Vet suicides
thanks, leen. checked it out with your link. my list is ok, that a hearing from yesterday.
How are we going to get to a “seamless transition” from our “warriors” serving to being entered into the coverage, education etc system for Vets
shensiki saying that Gates has been extremely helpful and has helped lead the way on “seamless tranistion” “going paperless by 2012″ hopefully
funding hopefully not part of duplicating systems…agree to a single electronic record system. Include doctors, nurses, health care professionals to help improve the medical record system
thanks still listening. Really like Shensiki
appreciate the shensiki liveblogging. i might also try to do a bit later once kashkari is up.
Gen Shinseki “the quality of the services we provide will not be jeopardized”
Shinseki seems like a no nonsense/no bullshit kind of man.
When my pops finally needed the VA’s services (after TEamsters cut off hundreds of thousands of their workers) we became aware from a program Tim Russert did about his WWII dad and services available. We realized that our dad could access 1900.00 dollars a month when he entered an assisted living facility. The VA sure does not advertise this.
Now they are discussing Vets access to college. Rep Filmer from ( D-CA) “heading into a real problem that we need to fix fast”
Rep Filmer “our Vietnam Vets suffering from agent orange have gone through hell for three decades” He goes onto to discuss the hogwash that Vietnam Vets have to go through to get coverage for being harmed via the use of Agent Orange
Rep Fulmer “if you were there we should care” “honor the claims”
“the system is looking for problems instead of solutions”
Fulmer “there should be a mandatory physical and mental evaluation/screening before you leave active service” “Gates can order this quickly” “this is a disservice to all who have served”
What the hell Schapiro just said that she does not think they would have been able to pick on the Madoff scam if they had had more info.
That is the only time I have heard her make a statement/contradiction that should have BEEN BLOWN OUT OF THE WATER.
WTF? How many times did that Madoff whistleblower whistle? Three times?
The SEC just was not listening
from above – Note on Mary Shapiro: from LA Times:
this statement should be found verbatim. She sure covered her ass and put her foot in her mouth
First panel Kucinich with Kashkari. Questions excellent. Kashkari better than than I expected. He seems more forthright and more direct in responses than when Paulson was Sec Trsy.
Recess now began 12:20 p.m. EST – 30 min recess. Reception good at link selise gave upstairs.
Next panel will address specific uses of the TARP used so far;
3rd panel will be with the Inspector General as witness.
Focus of Reps’ questions to Kashkari seemed to me to be:
(a) Donald Kohn’s refusal to divulge names of AIG’s counterparties who got some of TARP money received by AIG;
(b) AIG, CITI, Bank of America loaning billions to foreign entities (Dubai, China, India) after receiving TARP money when our own companies cannot get loans.
(c) lack of computer interfaces to a common site that produces a proper accounting system accessible by the public so taxpayers can know where their tax dollars are going and to whom and for what.
(d) lack of restrictions on TARP recipients regarding bonuses, compensations, airplanes, “conferences” at $$$ spas, etc., on the TARP funds already out the door – Paulson’s, “just trust them” attitude.
(e) DEMAND for more accountability and full TRANSPARENCY (anybody expect that?)
(f) AIG received ‘retention payments’ (so employees could be retained), then AIG paid out more than $400 Million in bonuses, then laid off employees they got the money to retain.
(g) Questions about whether political influence (pressure) resulted in some loans. Kashkari: “I have certified that all loans I have made were purely on a merit basis; no undue influence.”
(h) Rep Watson (CA)”….how did we get in this mess…”
Kashkari: “…banks made loans that people could not pay; buyers purchased homes they could not pay for; regulators did not do their job..”
[ They ALL refuse to address that removal of laws in place (Glass-Steagal), and the 5 CEOs meeting 03/282004 with the 5 SEC commissioners which resulted in SEC rules changes that allowed the CDOs, MBSs, derivatives, other exotic instruments, and virtually removing the ceiling on debt to capital reserve ratio caused, IMHO, a whole He..l of a lot of the meltdown. We don’t hear about that because it was primarily PAULSON’s PROGRAM ] At that meeting were Paulson CEO Goldman Sachs (main planner, force and spokesman), and CEOs for Morgan Stanley, Bear Stearns, Lehman Brothers, and Merrill Lynch (from memory,) That rule change was repealed on Sept 29, 2008 and the surviving banks involved at that meeting have all received TARP funds.
I hope this makes sense; it’s hurried.
I’d like to see Homeland Security committee invite Susan Lindauer for a Q&A. she’s a cousin of Andy Card, former Chief of Staff to Bush and she was arrested under the Patriot Act — only other American was Jose Padilla.

It’s a sin the american people never took Dennis for real because he is a little guy. The guy really should get a lot more credit because he is real and has more smarts than one thinks. They laughed at the guy because he was man enough to admit he saw a UFO. I saw one and I’m also man enough to admit it our difference is I’m big enough and mean enough to smack anyone in the mouth who has the guts to laugh at me or tell me I don’t know what I saw.
