Don’t know if this will be permitted, but I love all the links oxdown diarists find, and I thought it would be fun to have a place to share those links that we don’t have the time or interest to turn into full blown diaries. If this appeals to you, please add your links in the comments.
My recommended must read:
By Chris Floyd at Empire Burlesque, Hope Abandoned: Obama Protects and Promotes CIA Torture Mavens
But hope must be grounded in reality; and it must be invested in the right place. When reality gives it the lie, then it must be abandoned. There is no hope to be found in the Obama Administration: no hope for genuine change, no hope for a clean break (or any kind of break) from the relentless and ruthless promotion of empire, oligarchy and militarism. By his own choices — his appointments, his policies, his court actions, his rhetoric — Barack Obama has demonstrated beyond all doubt his sincere and abiding commitment to "continuity" in the most pernicious and corrosive elements of America’s lawless hyper-state. To place one’s hope in such a figure is a crippling, disastrous folly.
The only hope that can be associated with the Obama Administration is the long-shot, rapidly fading, outside chance that they could be forced — very much against their will — into at least slowing the militarist-oligarchic juggernaut by strong, sustained, massive, informed political opposition from the public. (And no, not the "tea-bag" fantasies of the fascistic Right, whose only real complaint about Obama — aside from the unspoken one about his skin color — is that he is not militarist and oligarchic enough.)

Faith Groups Increasingly Lose Gay Rights Fight
My diary would say that some fights are best lost.
And I would shed light on the reality that there are some people and groups whose faith leads to a different conclusion:
UCC leaders laud Vermont legalization of Vermont Same Gender Marriage
thanks for the good news!
Matt Taibbi’s article mentioned in Janushka’s diary above is IMHO a must read:
Emphasis added.
This article has been cited by others I think but it gives a good intro into how the current depression is playing out here and abroad and how this all relates to the Great Depression of 1929.

Thanks Selise; From your quoted article “And no, not the “tea-bag” fantasies of the fascistic Right, whose only real complaint about Obama — aside from the unspoken one about his skin color — is that he is not militarist and oligarchic enough.)”——-What concerns me is that the vast majority of American’s who are neither ‘rightwingnuts’ or ‘leftist liberals’ are not being informed of what is going on and are turned off by the hyperbole by each side. The old ‘why do Kansan’s vote against their self interest’ issue.
Somehow the facts have to be given to those who are tired of hearing the back and forth and Emmanuel’s ‘ratcheting down’ the criticism and acquiesence of MoveOn and similar orgs to Emmanuel’s edict isn’t helpful. Nor is Obama’s ‘glimmer of hope’ crap.
Wish I had an answer but I don’t. I just keep thinking about Molly Ivin’s injunction to have fun while fighting the ‘beast’.
Hi Selise, nice idea to linkshare.
My link might be slightly stale, but I only heard of this development after listening to Thom Hartmann yesterday. He interviewed Dr. Iris Mack, a quantitative analyst who worked for Larry Summers at Harvard. (!) Here’s a link to the story at TPM.
Yeah, I think my Obama honeymoon is over. Between appointing Goldman alums to the treasury dept. and claiming blanket immunity from Gitmo lawsuits, it’s over. It is no longer comforting to imagine what McCain would have done. We now have to hold Obama accountable. You all are probably way way ahead of me on that score.
PS: It seems to me that Dr. Mack is exactly the kind of person that Obama would like to spotlight over the likes of Larry Summers. sheesh.
DIGG IS OPEN - and recommended
This was kind of fun to watch. Fightin’ Irish Extravaganza on Hardball yesterday. O’Donnell v. Buchanan. Debate the Notre Dame invites of Bush the Executioner over Obama the Babykiller.
It starts off predictably with Buchanan turning the burner on and then suddenly it’s boiling over mid way through. It had me chanting “Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!” by the end. (That’s for the Irish Rudy not the Italian one>)
Happy Easter!
Your link-share is a great idea, selise.
Prior to your link I had never heard of Chris Floyd or Empire Burlesque, but I posted a comment yesterday at Scarecrow’s diary in almost the same words, i.e. that “hope must be founded in reality…”
I voted for Obama because McCain/Palin as pres/VP was just not bearable. I had grave doubts after Obama flipped on FISA after adamantly stating that he would filibuster against it on the senate floor. Well, here we are with a slicker-talking Bush 44; unbearable, yet we must bear it unless we can find a way to turn it around.
Thanks to all who share their links; so many of them reach into the sources otherwise unknown to me.
Here is the link to an article entitled,’Now Is The Time — There Is Hope’
by Michael C. Ruppert, at FromTheWilderness, bearing the cirtical date of Thursday, 09/17/2008 [ the next day Paulson went to the senate with his stick-em-up note demanding $700 Billion for the bail-out or the sky would fall]. Excerpt:

Nassim Taleb’s “Ten Principles for a Black Swan-Proof World” is also a must read.
wow – thanks for all the great links!
Here is link to an article about how JP Morgan Chase and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency together secretly stole kazillions in silver. I don’t understand it all, but I get the idea that grand robbery was pulled-off.
plunger provided this link on a different thread.
oh god, i miss molly. there used to be monthly gatherings at her house and i got to go to a few. was at a memorial ceremony for her at city hall after she passed. people loved her so much.
thanks selise. the black swan article is really good. taleb’s the man.
Here is an interesting article by Kevin Phillips: http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsme…..alization/
Also, don’t miss “Elizabeth Warren’s Report to Congress” by Mike Whitney in Counterpunch.
WOW!
One of the comments on another thread stated that the derivatives total is over $650 TRILLION now. No wonder that Krugman and the real economists are saying the 1 or 2 trillion is not enough. I agree with Ruppert, there’s not enough money in the world to throw at this mountain the banksters have dumped on us.
I haven’t heard of any mass arrests of the gangsters….have you?
Nor have I heard of any serious investigations of bankster misconduct.
The sum of all balances on U.S. mortgages is only about $12 trillion. If the federal government isured (or purchased) all of them for that amount, all real estate-backed CDOs would have a floor on their worth, and all CDSs on them would become worthless. I.e., all of that shit pile would evaporate.
Unfortunately the Bush/Obama approach the the problem is to work on the $650 trillion “derivative” end of it, rather than the $12 trillion “asset” end of it. Bin Laden wanted to bankrupt this nation, and it looks like our presidents are going to do it for him.
Hi Selise. Is it perhaps time for Hugh’s List II? I’m losing track of Obama’s about-faces from his campaign rhetoric.
i’m losing track too. and it’s only april. :(
