Phil Weiss’ title for this story says the State Dep’t “says” the above, and he adds that democracy is not good for Egypt “because of Israel.” In actuality, this is Phil Weiss’ analysis. However, because the word “democracy” in Egypt is not even mentioned by the State Department representative, there is every reason to believe he is probably right.
Thanks to Pulse, (the above video) is a wonderful interview of State Dep’t spokesman P.J. Crowley by Shihab Rattansi of Al Jazeera that shows why Obama talked about Tunisian democracy in the State of the Union but said nothing about democracy in Egypt. At about 5:40 Rattansi asks Crowley why the U.S. with all its leverage over Egypt doesn’t pressure it to call off the dogs and let the society move toward democracy?
Says Crowley: “We respect what Egypt contributes to the region, it is a stabilizing force, it has made its own peace with Israel, and is pursuing normal relations with Israel, we think that’s important, we think that’s a model that the region should adopt broadly speaking. at the same time, we recognize that Egypt, Tunisia other countries do need to reform, they do need to respond to the needs of their people, and we encourage that reform and are contributing across the region to that reform.”
Rattansi: [paraphrased] but if Egypt can’t guarantee stability, what’s the point of all your financial support.
Crowley: “We rely on Egypt as an ally to be a stabilizing force in the region… that has benefits across the region.”
In fact, Joe Biden just came out even more strongly on this very theme: On the PBS News Hour Biden doesn’t appear to know what to say, except that Mubarak is not a dictator. Biden can’t seem to spit out the word “democracy,” let alone embrace it.
JOE BIDEN: Look, Mubarak has been an ally of ours in a number of things and he’s been very responsible on, relative to geopolitical interests in the region: Middle East peace efforts, the actions Egypt has taken relative to normalizing the relationship with Israel.
And I think that it would be — I would not refer to him as a dictator.
Whether the US position is taken for Israel’s sake or not, it is quite clear that we are not for democracy in Egypt. What a revoltin’ development dis’ is (as the Brooklyn actor William Bendix liked to say).

As a hint to how far Egypt is from democracy, Haaretz, the liberal Israeli newspaper reported:
ElBaradei has been put under house arrest
News seems to be getting out, photos and reports, even though the internet has been shut down. A curfew has also been instituted, 6 PM Friday to 7 AM tomorrow. It is likely that we will eventually see a repeat of the crackdown we saw in Iran several months ago, with deaths occurring.
Michael Neumann wrote the following when discussing the Israel, the Palestinian Authority, the United States, etc.:
If one wonders why the United States would refuse to endorse democratic reforms in Egypt, this is due to the fact that they created a monster in Israel, and fear, rightly, perhaps, that Israel will act irrationally if pushed too hard.

It is almost evident that if Egypt were to become democratic, it would immediately open Gaza to free commerce, which would undermine Israel’s siege against Hamas. But this move by Israel to “put the Gazans on a diet” is totally against the humanitarian outlook of any democracy, well, except perhaps Israel and the US.
You are right about an opening of Gaza. If it were to happen, it would make hash out of Israel’s “diet” tactic. That would be a good thing, of course, since Israel’s imposed diet is just another term to use for genocidal ethnic cleansing. But, only realpolitical limits would deter Israel from enforcing this strategy. And we have every reason to believe the US, the Europeans and the UN would be unwilling to create these realpolitical limits for Israel.
Recommended because this is an important issue
Another reason for the Gaza siege, one might speculate, is to restrain Palestinians from Gaza from entering and populating the West Bank, which Israel is slowly ethnically cleansing through its colonialism.
From the last poll I am aware of, only a quarter of Palestinians living in Gaza are supporters of Hamas. Since Israel, through slick propaganda, has turned Hamas into the aggressor against Israel the victim, it apparently wants to maintain this anti-democratic arch enemy of freedom contrained. That Hamas was democratically elected to head the Palestinian government seems irrelevant.
“Mubarak has been an ally of ours in a number of things and he’s been very responsible on, relative to geopolitical interests in the region: Middle East peace efforts…
WTF! Is this guy, the VP of the US, serious? Middloe East peace efforts? The US is right behind the Israeli occupation, supporting the colonization, supporting the replacement of one people by another. What the hell could he be thinking. Netanyahu just told Obama, fuck you, when he asked that Israel stop the colonization (settlement building) for just three months. Netanyahu told Obama to shove those 20 modern fighters he was to get in return, up his ass. Just who’s running this country? I have my doubts.
I think that Israel would just occupy the gate themselves. Erekat, in the palestinian papers offered this to Livni.
Israel has tried to turn Gaza over to Egypt. It makes sense demographic sense for Israel, also they use Gaza as a dumping ground for undesirables.
Mubarak doesn’t want the responsibility for Gaza, the people or the Hamas members which are aligned with the Muslim brotherhood. probably the reason that Egypt wouldn’t open the gate during cast lead is to keep from being hooked into this.
Also, Egyptians identify with all Palestinian suffering, so all borders and trade would be vulnerable, not just their mass punishment project.
Even Fox commenters who want Mubarak to stay in power are making fun of Joke Biden for saying he’s not a dictator, he’s our ally. He’s got a serious empathy problem. What a stupid asshole. He’s great for Obama though, no one would ever think of eliminating him for fear of the replacement.
oh my god. Huckabee’s on Fox… the tiny little nation of Israel surrounded by these barbaric jihadist hordes.. ….They aren’t wearing jeans or drinking pepsi so they’re not ready for democracy. They probably don’t even know who the cabinet members are, the ones Mubarak fired.. blah blah blah..
If the hordes come to Amerika to install Sharia law, I’m giving them Huckabees address in case they need some shrunken heads.
Thanks, I’ll read it.
Well, we don’t have anything to lose really.
Whadda crocka bullshit. The rush is on to make it about Israel, whatever IT is. Twas ever thus. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz……..
