I think, in light of recent developments, that we need to gird ourselves for the 2nd coming of the Great Depression. All the same actors are making all the same stupid decisions as their predecessors to ensure that outcome. I don’t think at this point we need concern ourselves with specific issues we want addressed. I think we just need to start making the full throated, unabashed case for the 2nd New Deal and to start warning people that the road Obama and the Repugs are travelling down with their debt histrionics leads to another Great Depression. As we have all seen with the Baggers, when you put forth a narrative and pound out its points every day, it slowly becomes the dominant theme. I think we need to take advantage of the fact that everyone is following their nightmarish policy prescriptions and start, like latter day Cassandras, prophecying the doom that will result. The more we do this now and going forward, the more we will control the terms of what is possible in the years ahead. People are more likely to follow you when you have a track record of being proven right. I’ve always thought the problem with this administration has been their lack of faith in the ideals of the Democratic Party, lack of a defining theme, and their penchant for wonk-centric, invisible policy solutions over life changing ones. We need to say flat out that the Repugs and Obama’s policies are just plain disastrous and prescribe the massive direct hiring that is needed to stave off a complete collapse of our standard of living. Much like Winston Churchill vis a vis WWII, we may be down now but will be vindicated in the end.
