When I was little Santa was all about the toys and the mall. I had no idea he even gave anything other than videos and toys, but now that I’m older I think Santa’s matured a bit to. Maybe Mrs. Claus and the elves taught him what was really important.
I was very disappointed in Santa for a while there when I wanted him to bring my dad back or make my family normal, but he came through on a lot of the Barbie stuff and the Mulan video when I was 7. These days I have stopped asking Santa for specific things since I’ve gotten a bit too tall to sit on his lap.
Santa’s had some good years and some disappointing years when it came to delivering what I asked for, but my friends and the people here in Austin have more than made up the difference.
This afternoon I get to dress up as one of the elves and help Santa bring songs and presents at the children’s hospital. (Half the kids in the youth group are going.) I think Santa is probably better at that sort of thing than fixing broken families.
This post is also at the Beach House.

One year when I was little I woke up because I heard clattering on the roof. It scared me, it was right over my head. And we didn’t have an attic…
In hindsight, I think it was squirrels on the roof or something, but then, age 4 or 5, I was very happy to think it was Santa.
